Alison Brown is a Grammy Winning banjo player, composer and producer who has made a bunch of great albums under her own name but also as a sideperson and collaborator with artists like Alison Krauss, Michelle Shocked, and Stuart Duncan. She started playing as a youngster, first on dobro and then switched over to banjo. She spent her early years cutting her teeth at bluegrass events and venues around California, before veering away from music in the 80's to get her MBA from UCLA! Alison was working full-time in finance when she realized that she just didn't want to be doing that and dove back head-first into music. She joined Union Station with Alison Krauss in the late 80's and has never looked back. That band won a grammy in 1990, and then she joined Michelle Shocked's band and became her bandleader for a few years. Alison started her own quartet and has been recording albums with them since the early 90's. Her label, Compass Records, has grown to be one of the leading labels for roots music in the world, and her and and her husband Gary West run the whole thing out of the office and studio on music row. The studio itself is an incredible piece of history, known at one time as “Hillbilly Central” it's where some of the iconic records were made for Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson. Alison's latest record “On Banjo” is a great example of her killer playing but also her composing and arranging skills. It features guests like Steve Martin, Sierra Hull, Sharon Isbin and the Kronos quartet and explores styles like Brazillian choro and bossa nova as well as bluegrass and old time. You can keep up with what she's up to, and get all her tour dates at alisonbrown.comBe sure to listen to the Accompanying Songs Playlist which contains some of the artist's work, plus many of the songs we discuss on the show:Playlist on Spotify / Playlist on Apple MusicIf you enjoyed this episode, please consider supporting the show with a donation or Patreon subscriptionThe show's website can be found at www.makersandshakerspodcast.comYour fearless host, Steve Dawson can be found at www.stevedawson.ca Become a member at https://plus.acast.com/s/mmasspodcast. Multi Platinum, Grammy-award winning producer-guitarist Pete Anderson is probably best known as Dwight Yoakam's guitarist from 1986 to 2003. During that time, the duo helped reshape the face of country music. Anderson's worked with a variety of artists, from Lucinda Williams and Michelle Shocked to the Meat Puppets and Roy Orbison. He's taken a lifetime of musical knowledge and experiences, and distilled it into a new book, How To Produce a Record: A Player's Philosophy For Making a Great Recording - out now from Jessee Lee Music.Anderson gives tips that can be applied whether you're in a large studio, or your bedroom.
“On Banjo” In sunny a San Diego high school somewhere in the 70s, while kids were listening to Aerosmith and Van Halen and Boston, Alison Brown was listening to bluegrass. She had started on guitar but gravitated to the banjo and by her teens, she was already pretty proficient on the instrument. She won first place at the Canadian National Banjo Championship, played a gig at the Grand Ole Opry and toured one summer with fiddler Stuart Duncan. After high school She headed to Harvard, knocked out an MBA at UCLA and then went to work as an Investment Banker. You know—the typical bluegrass story you hear all the time. Thinking music was a weekend thing, Brown had a nice balance going but then music decided to tip the scales. Alison Krauss flashed the bat signal for a banjo player and Brown answered the call, and gave up her Wall Street environs for a life in music. And what a life it has been. An internationally recognized virtuoso on banjo, Brown has played with Alison Krauss, Michelle Shocked, fronted her own Alison Brown Quartet, toured all over the world, from Japan to South America, along the way playing The Kennedy Center, the Newport Folk Festival, The Cambridge Folk Festival in England and the Galway Arts Festival in Ireland. With a Grammy in her trophy case along with multiple Grammy nominations, features on CBS Sunday Morning, NPRs All Things Considered and close to 15 critically lauded albums under her belt, including her fabulous new one No Banjo, Alison Brown is an artistic force. And what of On Banjo? Well, putting it simply, it's a stunner. A deftly played album filled with technical prowess, musical finesse and compositional dexterity, On Banjo is a song cycle that's celebratory, joyful and cathartic. Brown is the co-founder of Compass Records Group, she serves on the Board of the Nashville Chapter of the Recording Academy and she's the co-chair of the Steve Martin Banjo Prize. She's kind of a big deal and guess what? She's as nice as can be. www.alisonbrown.com www.bombshellradio.com www.stereoembersmagazine.com www.embersarts.com www.alexgreenonline.com Twitter: @emberseditor IG: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com
From Sparks to Light - Inspiring Stories for Challenging Times
A month ago I had the opportunity to talk to Dan Mullins, a Sydney-based singer/songwriter, broadcaster, podcaster and writer. Dan is the host of My Camino, an Australian based podcast that is heard around the world.Having walked two Caminos, with another one in the planning stages, I can honestly say that we Camino veterans are an unusual sort. The Camino family is strong. There's a kind of psychic energy that seems to draw us together, even years after we've made our journey. It's an experience that never leaves you, as the multitude of podcasts and books testify to. At the same time, the import of that journey seems to take on new meaning as we find ourselves reliving those steps when we find ourselves in the company of other pilgrims. It's a yearning we all hold, as Dan says, ~ to find what we're looking for.Dan is a veteran radio producer, having worked on the Alan Jones Show - the number one program in Sydney - for more than 16 years. As a musician, he was signed with Sony Publishing in the 1990s, toured the world and Australia with acts like Bryan Ferry, Desiree, Michelle Shocked, Stephen Cummings, Violent Femmes, Hothouse Flowers and The Church.Dan still performs 80 shows a year - he's a storyteller, a six-string troubador with soaring vocals and lilting melodies. He's played thousands of gigs, non-stop weekend after weekend, year after year, plying his trade in pubs and clubs the length and breadth of the country.Dan wrote the single, Somewhere Along the Way (the Camino Song) after walking in the footsteps of millions of pilgrims before him on the Camino de Santiago. It can be found on his album, Duende. This weekend I'll have the opportunity to share Camino stories with the audience of Occidental Center for the Arts, in Occidental California. If you're in the area, please stop by. You can find the information on my website. I am so grateful to Dan Mullins for having me. Ted Asregadoo and guest Michael McGauley go back...waaaay back to the late '80s/early '90s and revisit some mixtapes they made back in the day on cassette tape. Yeah. Cassette tape. What they find from these artifacts are lost musical gems and even some of that old radio magic when DJs used to pick their own songs to play on the air.
The documentary Enemies within the Church shows that similar human sins thrive in US evangelicalism and Eastern Europe“He who is faithful in the small will also be faithful in the great, while he who is unjust on a small scale, will also be unjust on a grand scale.” So said Jesus to his disciples in the sixteenth chapter of Luke. We should count these words among the many verses that American evangelicalism has lost sight of. Believers in Jesus Christ should understand the parallels between injustices that happen within their immediate social orbit and injustices they see writ-large on the nightly news. The little things and big things have an important and enduring relationship because people's misconduct in one's sphere mirrors and compounds their misconduct in the other.Let us consider, for argument's sake, someone who has very few resources but applies the few resources he has to abuse other people. It is safe to conjecture that such a person would probably commit war crimes if he were rich, powerful, and able to command thousands of troops to follow his bidding. If he had no regard for the damage done by his nonviolent and supposedly mild cruelties, it would not be hard to numb him to the damage done by violence. Once he's numb, anything becomes possible, because he no longer heeds the voice of the Holy Spirit. So why do I bring this up? A documentary came out about abuses of power within American evangelical churches, called Enemies within the Church. If you made it this far into the present article, you really need to go to this website (www.enemieswithinthechurch.com) and see it. I realize that most people right now are consumed with news about Ukraine. But the human concerns that drive readers to follow the Russian invasion bear upon the urgent information provided in the documentary. What does the evangelical church have to do with the price of tea in Ukraine?Americans are hearing leaders like Russell Moore denounce Putin for being a “murderer and tyrant” as well as “an abuser of evangelical Christians, other religious minorities, and even his own country's orphans.” Wow, that's rich. “Rev. Dr. Moore” has engaged in his own venal tyrannies. When he was president of the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission, that organization didn't just attempt to liberalize tens of thousands of American churches toward an agenda fundamentally at odds with the Bible. The ERLC minions also destroyed people's careers, joined in campaigns of character assassination, and ruthlessly invaded institutions to get access to their resources, the most prominent example being the way the ERLC clique went savagely after Paige Patterson and his allies in order to install their friends and fellows at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. Politics is as complicated in the church as it is at NATO. Russell Moore is an easy target for outrage. But as Enemies within the Church points out, like most supervillains of church life, Moore was promoted and protected by a host of people who have yet to be held accountable for the damage done to American evangelicalism. Documentary producer Judd Saul worked carefully to bring these abuses to light. If people don't understand the stakes and scope of the problem, if they fail to defend the bride of Christ against those who are abusing her, then American churches don't stand a chance. Many people I respect have told me there's no point fighting the fight of Enemies within the Church. They tell me the camp championed by the documentary—call it “the Christian right” if you wish—has already lost the war. Since the story about Ukraine broke, I've had heart-to-heart conversations with my friends on both left and right, especially who have been ruthlessly canceled. I've called up people like Michelle Shocked and Denise McAllister to find fellowship with those who went through cancel culture as I did. Authoritarian sins caused me and so many other Christians to lose our careers, friends, family, and reputations. It is obvious that the warmongering against Russia will bring cancel culture to a whole new level. People who question the dominant warmongering narrative should expect to be labeled pro-Putin, racist, and fascist, and forced to choose between their values and their ability to survive. What seemed like our “personal” issues with censorship and institutional abuses now appears ready to bring Western civilization into World War III and thermonuclear war. My friends may be right; perhaps all is lost. For my part I have withdrawn from social media and almost all public debate because I feel I did what God asked me to. I think God has given me leave to “cultivate my own garden” (pace Voltaire's Candide) away from the toxic sparring with people like David French, Colby Adams, Jonathan Merritt, Hannah Williams, Karen Swallow Prior, Janet Mefferd, and the rest. The wisest thing my father ever told me was, “the world is full of a--holes. Avoid them so you don't smart smelling like them.”I've also realized that almost nobody in the public square believes the ideologies they wear as labels. There is no shortage of famous people embroiled in debates about LGBT and Christianity, including the pastors who answered John Macarthur's call to protest against government bans on conversion therapy on January 16. In LGBT debates, however, most commentators do not seem to care about whether self-identified gay or trans people can turn to Christ and live out the Bible's vision for sexuality. They care about winning the debate.I know many of these self-proclaimed gospel defenders from my ten years of being involved in debates. They weren't there when these battles mattered or when their advocacy could have made a difference. They let countless people get banned, shunned, and crushed. Most of them have fallen into a predictable routine and need to perform their Christian beliefs in order to pay their bills and save themselves from loneliness and embarrassment. Culture wars and conventional ground wars have something in common. They have to be fought. They require strategy. They depend on funding, morale, and courage. To win wars you have to do something. And it saddens me to see Christians wanting to do something about Ukraine, where they can't accomplish anything valuable, while they continue to do nothing about the disastrous fall of Christ's bride at home. That's the key point getting lost in the fog of war. On the whole American Christians do not know very much about Ukraine or Russia. Unless they want to push American politicians to become entangled in yet another conflict far removed from us, full of ambiguities and devoid of clear-cut good and bad guys, we can't do anything about Ukraine from here other than pray. We should pray. But when it comes to the same timeless sins of hubris, domination, callousness to suffering, deceit, greed, vainglory, ambition, and aggression, take note—there is more than enough of that in our own church world, and evangelicals can do something about it close to home. The culture war plays a major role in the Russia-Ukraine War. The term “clash of civilizations,” coined by Samuel P. Huntington, could apply to Russia's friction with the west as much as scholars applied it to the collision of Christianity and Islam. Within the supposedly Christian west, one worldview anchored in timeless moral standards wrestles mightily against another worldview, which is not anchored anywhere but floats on the whims of postmodern, posthuman, relativist thinking. The United States has been exporting its sexual decadence, reckless consumerism, and general hedonism all over the globe. In the last fifteen years, Russia has played the counterbalance to the US in cultural terms, because Putin and other Russians have refused to go along with the west's redefinition of gender, sexuality, family, history, and morality. A lot of Christians who agree more with Putin than with Biden on morality find themselves in a difficult dilemma if they embrace the anti-Putin propaganda which boosts the anti-morality of America's political hedonism. They also find themselves in an awkward position if the situation tempts them to defend everything Putin does.Saul and Gordon came out with their film in November 2021. It is no surprise that all the platforms that need to be airing it are working hard to erase the truths the film exposed. The movie documents how people with unchristian agendas have grossly distorted scripture, even turned it against itself, in order to capitalize on the social capital that comes with America's pastorate. No matter how little talent one has, no matter whether someone believes in Christ or not, he who controls the pews has access. My own history with the documentary, and evangelical corruptionI was interviewed and appeared in the documentary because I had firsthand experience with the subject matter. I have learned the painful truth that there is nothing Christian, right, or conservative about what people perceive as the Reagan-legacy Christian right.
Dusty Wakeman has worn a lot of hats – producer, engineer, musician, and owner/manager of Los Angeles based Mad Dog Studios. His work with Dwight Yoakam, Lucinda Williams, Roy Orbison, Michelle Shocked, Buck Owens and many other artists has helped generate a number of multi-platinum and Grammy-winning records. Growing up in Texas, Dusty developed a love of the whole process of making music, from touring in groups to engineering records and designing his own studios. After moving to Los Angeles in 1977 to pursue a career as a bass player, he took a “temporary” gig at West L.A. Music, where he became store manager and stayed for three years. In 1980 he founded Mad Dog Studios, which he owned and operated for 28 years. Dusty discovered Royer mics in 2000, caught ribbon fever, and picked up a number of Royers for Mad Dog Studios, leading to a close relationship with Royer Labs. Looking for a ‘lifestyle change' after 25 years of constant engineering, producing records and touring, Dusty came across the prototype for the MA-200. His enthusiasm for the new brand led to Dusty joining Mojave Audio in September of 2005. His in-depth knowledge of recording, understanding of the importance of choosing the right microphone for the job, and his ability to share his experience make Dusty an invaluable asset to Mojave Audio. Rory Mcleod joins me on episode 49.Rory is a modern day wandering minstrel . A multi-instrumentalist ‘folk singing' troubadour, Rory has travelled far and wide, his trusty harmonica (plus an assortment of other instruments) has been with him every step of the way, including working as a musical clown in Mexico. His first band was ‘Have Mercy', formed jamming in the markets of London alongside Steve Baker and another harmonica player. Rory has jammed and gone onto collaborate with a wide range of different performers around the world, including Michelle Shocked from the US and Australian Aboriginal Kev Carmody. From his travels he has picked up tunes which have armed his harmonica repertoire with complex rhythms and unique angles.Rory won the Edinburgh Festival Street Busker of the Year and was the Texas Harmonica Champion of 1981.Links:Rory's website:http://www.rorymcleod.com/Bandcamp page:https://rorymcleod.bandcamp.com/musicBuy a Sheng Chinese Harmonica:https://harmonicas-direct.com/product/sheng/Road Diaries: http://www.rorymcleod.com/diaries/list.htmVideos:Have Mercy ‘Boodlam' album:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WOkOZUD9GNgNHL Festival 2011 with glass and telephone call:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zqDqHkA-e2wLoves Like A Rock:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B4gFDlm4oe0Short interview on YouTube: Bluesman don't really sing about their Grandmas:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_XPXxQDukBgDonations: If you want to make a voluntary donation to help support the running costs of the podcast then please use this link:https://paypal.me/harmonicahappyhour?locale.x=en_GBAlso check out the Spotify Playlist, which contains many of the songs discussed in the podcast:https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5QC6RF2VTfs4iPuasJBqwT?si=M-j3IkiISeefhR7ybm9qIQSome of the harmonica songs on Rory's albums (including the ones played in the podcast):Album: Angry LoveFarewell welfare Album: Kicking the sawdustBaksheeshHarmonicas dream Album: Footsteps and HeartbeatsLove like a RockMoments sharedTake me homeAlbum: Travelling HomeIndia matea Black Brown and WhiteAlbum: Lullabies for big babiesCome with me when I goLong lost friend Album: Mouth to mouth Miners Picket danceSandpaper blues One track mind (with have mercy)Album: Brave FacesKlezmer tune: The Disciple of the Rabbi from Trisk.Cut in PayEmperor's new clothesAlbum: Swings and RoundaboutsLassoing the beesAlbum: Songs for big little people TrainDeep breath waltzWinds March (played on Sheng Zheng)Balloon dance Direction songFeather raceAlbum: GustoDisturbing The comfortableGalloway girlWrong side of the wallSingle:Didn't he ramble.

Meet L.A. guitarist, singer-songwriter, Janet Robin...or as Cheryl likes to call her, Cousin Janet. When one of your first guitar teachers is Randy Rhoades who played with Quiet Riot and Ozzy Osborne, you're already off to, shall we say, an unusual start. Playing in Precious Metal before she was old enough to drink, Janet was only allowed in for sound checks and shows at some of the hottest clubs on the L.A. scene. She moved on to tour with Lindsey Buckingham, Meredith Brooks, Michelle Shocked, and Air Supply, and had a solo album “Everything Has Changed,” produced by John Carter Cash. Janet talks to Cheryl about all she's done, and the one gig she turned down that taught her never to say “no.” Plus find out who was her toughest boss, what IS The String Revolution, and what on Earth has Janet done to the Blues???
Marilyn Monroe. Runing Wild Os Mutantes. Baby Fun Lovin' Criminals. I'm Not In Love Marilyn Monroe. Do it again Smoke City. Underwater love The Magnetic Fields. I have the moon Michelle Shocked. Desafinado VAST. Flames Peor Impossible. Susurrando Ray Davis.
A few different tangents this week. 80's and 90's alt ladies like tanya Donnely and Michelle Shocked. Some cartoonish hillbilly vibes like Eastbound Jesus, literally a song about a dude 'wrastlin' a bear' English lads playing the blues, Stevie Ray too, calssic Ribert Earle keen and a doozy from James McMurtry. As well as a decent chunk of awesome NZ tunes including a couple that are brand new from Miles Calder and Adam Hattaway and the Haunters.
From 1968 to 1973, the public television variety show SOUL!, guided by the enigmatic producer and host Ellis Haizlip, offered an unfiltered, uncompromising celebration of Black literature, poetry, music, and politics—voices that had few other options for national exposure, and, as a result, found the program an improbable place to call home. The series was among the first to provide expanded images of African Americans on television, shifting the gaze from inner-city poverty and violence to the vibrancy of the Black Arts Movement. Banjoist and record label head Alison Brown speaks with host Tom Power from her studio at Compass Records headquarters in Nashville, Tennessee. They begin with her early records made with Stuart Duncan, "finding her people," and winning the Canadian National Banjo Championship (as an American). Brown then headed to Harvard, and playing banjo became "something you'd talk about at cocktail parties." She describes the moment she decided to leave investment banking and commit to music full time, her cocktail napkin dream, and playing with Alison Krauss, Indigo Girls, and Michelle Shocked. Power and Brown talk women in bluegrass, women in banjo, and the First Ladies of Bluegrass. The story they dive into together is ultimately about figuring out what makes you happy, and pursuing it bravely, against all odds.

It's been a wild ride for Michelle Shocked. Her career as a protest singer began in the mid-80s by accident and has expanded to touch on every genre you can think of. She doesn't want to be pigeonholed and she does what she wants. Which makes the "Yoshi Incident" even more confusing. In March of 2013 during a concert in San Francisco, Michelle, believing rightly that there were bootleggers in the room, said some pretty despicable things about homosexuals and gay marriage. Her career's never been the same. Was she kidding? Did she mean what she said? Was it on purpose? Did she know she was being recorded? Why would someone who has devoted her life to fighting for artists rights and many other causes say these things? We try to get to the bottom of it, you decide if we were successful. www.michelleshocked.com

Rory McLeod in conversation with David Eastaugh Rory McLeod (born 1957) is a British folk singer-songwriter from London. He grew up in Camberwell before moving to Northolt and later West Kilburn. His career has included being a fire eater and circus clown[3] and his performances include storytelling in the tradition of the traveling minstrel or troubadour, and playing a wide range of instrumentsincluding guitar, harmonica, trombone and his personally-made stomp box. WoMAD have said: "With Rory McLeod, you get the music of the world in one suitcase.[...] You can hear flamenco, calypso, blues and Celtic influences in his music, all wrapped together in an inimitable style". He has recorded and toured with (then) fellow Cooking Vinyl artist Michelle Shocked. He also performed on Puddle Dive, the 1993 album by fellow singer-songwriter, Ani DiFranco. In 1996, McLeod's song Invoking the Spirits, which was inspired by time he spent in Zimbabwe, was a BBC Radio 4 "pick of the week". McLeod played the theme tune for the TV animation series, Creature Comforts.Martin Newell has described McLeod as "a feral folk musician of enormous talent", and writing in The Guardian Robin Denselow called him a "rousing harmonica player and guitarist". In 2002, McLeod was the winner of the Best Live Act title at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards. McLeod played harmonica on Nizlopi's 2008 album, Make It Happen.

This week, Ozark old time duo “Old Ties” performs live at the Ozark Folk Center State Park. Also, interviews with the members of this eclectic duo, Allison Williams & Willi Carlisle. Mark Jones offers an archival recording of Ozark original Walter Gosser playing the traditional tune “Cripple Creek.” Author, folklorist, and songwriter Charley Sandage presents a piece on the uniquely American art form of shape note singing. Allison Williams and Willi Carlisle were brought together by a passion for old-time music. The duo is best known around these parts as the leaders of monthly square dances at various hotspots throughout Northwest Arkansas. When they aren’t calling dances, Williams and Carlisle gig as “Old Ties.” A native of the Arkansas Ozarks, Allison Williams got her start as a punk rock musician before rediscovering her musical roots. Several years in the mountains of North Carolina educated her in Appalachian banjo techniques, especially the fast distinctive styles of Hobart Smith and Wade Ward. Allison has toured internationally, sharing stages with Rhonda Vincent, Donna the Buffalo, and many other giants of the new roots music scene. Her solo CD ”Give Me the Roses” came out in the autumn of 2008, featuring driving arrangements of traditional old-time songs as well as eclectic originals, woven together by a talented backing band of rising stars: alumni of the Carolina Chocolate Drops, Old Crow Medicine Show, and the Wiyos, among others. Since then, Allison has toured internationally, playing to a sold-out Barbican Hall in London as part of the BBC’s “Folk America” special, and backing folk legend Michelle Shocked on her 2010 East Coast tour. Willi Carlisle has, according to one reviewer, "an authenticity it takes some songwriters years to achieve." After years of collecting folklore, playing or calling square dances, and working in the avant-garde, Willi Carlisle is a multi-faceted writer, performer and instrumentalist. With a style forged in the fire of Ozark oldtime and an ever-growing collection of antique musics, Carlisle’s multi-instrumental stories hoot, stomp, and saunter through joys and troubles uniquely Southern and timelessly true. Equally comfortable on banjo, fiddle and guitar, Carlisle has earned accolades for his versatility with performances at the Ozark Folk Center, the Fayetteville Roots Festival, Thacker Mountain Radio, and Fringe Festivals across the country. In this week’s “From the Vault” segment, musician, educator, and country music legacy Mark Jones offers an archival recording of Ozark original Walter Gosser playing the traditional tune “Cripple Creek,” from the Ozark Folk Center State Park archives. Author, folklorist, and songwriter Charley Sandage presents an historical portrait of the people, events, and indomitable spirit of Ozark culture that resulted in the creation of the Ozark Folk Center State Park and its enduring legacy of music and craft. This episode presents a piece on the uniquely American art form of shape note singing.
Janet Robin Biography “Working with Janet was an unforgettable experience. She followed her spirit – no limits. Janet’s love for her art is evident in her impassioned musicianship and inspired songwriting. The music we created together, vibrant and full of energy, encapsulates all that she is.”-John Carter Cash (Producer, owner Cash Cabin Studios) “From Randy Rhoads to Precious Metal, Lindsey Buckingham to John Carter Cash and all points in between – like a stint working with Meredith Brooks, opening for Midge Ure or appearing with Monte Montgomery – the ongoing tale of singer/guitarist/songwriter Janet Robin is a fascinating journey.” – Pollstar Janet Robin can be defined in a single word: musician. Many people attempt to make music, but few earn that illustrious title. Those in this business reserve that label for the rare individuals who consistently demonstrate a high level of talent, perseverance, taste and sensitivity over a period of time. To these people making music is not simply a pastime; it is a matter of blood and guts. That a serious addiction to making music runs through Robin’s veins is made clear from a quick review of her career. A Southern California native, Robin’s musical education began the moment she met her guitar teacher, Randy Rhoads (Quiet Riot, Ozzy Osbourne). Under Rhoads’ tutelage, Robin became an ace six-string player and, while still in high school, parlayed this education into a position as the lead guitarist for the all-female rock band Precious Metal. Discovered by Rodney Bingenheimer of the legendary L.A. rock radio station KROQ, Precious Metal was soon signed to Polygram Records. Later moving to Chameleon/Capitol Records, Precious Metal released several albums, wrote with Heart, Poison and Cheap Trick, toured extensively and gained accolades from both fans and critics alike. Following the demise of Precious Metal, Robin joined Fleetwood Mac guitarist Lindsey Buckingham’s band in support of his 1992 solo album, Out of the Cradle (Reprise Records). A consummate pro, working with Buckingham profoundly influenced Robin’s guitar playing, singing and songwriting, as well as her general approach to the music business. This new direction led to Robin’s 1998 debut solo album, Open the Door. Released on her own label, Little Sister Records, Buzz Weekly described the CD as “smart, savvy, fuzzy, hooky pop.” She has seen songs from this album featured in film and television; most notably on the then popular T.V. show Felicity. Ever the road warrior, she supported the disc by opening for such acts as Heart, Colin Hay, Loudon Wainwright III and the Smithereens, steadily building a wide fan base. Robin has since continued to tour heavily and averages as many as 150 dates per year. Encouraged by the warm reception of her debut, Robin released three more albums on Little Sister including the acoustic After the Flood which was recorded in Laurel Canyon and features “Beautiful Freak” which has since become a fan favorite and one of Robin’s defining songs. Also among these records is 2007’s Days of Summer. Recorded with producers David Bianco (Tom Petty, Teenage Fanclub, Mick Jagger) and Steve Baughman (Eminem, 50 Cent), this acoustic based EP is the work of an artist willing and able to explore the poignant emotional states of adulthood while avoiding the stereotypes brought on by most acoustic singer-songwriters. Working on the album was an experience that greatly affected her style and led Robin to many new and exciting opportunities including multiple tours in Europe. 2012 here in the USA, saw Robin release her album Everything Has Changed that bridges the gap between passionate acoustic music and gutsy rock n’ roll. With the help of her dedicated fan base, Robin was able to raise the funds ($20,000) for that studio effort. The loyal support enabled her to team up with producer John Carter Cash (Johnny Cash, June Carter Cash, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band) at Cash Cabin Studios outside of Nashville. The son of Johnny and June, Carter Cash was a producer on the Johnny Cash biopic Walk The Line and produced several records with his father as well as a Grammy Award winning record for June. Built by Johnny in 1979, this studio is where the country legend recorded much of his later work including his final recording, American V: A Hundred Highways, which was released posthumously and co-produced by Rick Rubin and John Carter. Robin had previously released “Everything Has Changed,” in Europe, with Hypertension Music based in Hamburg, Germany. Coupled with the strength of her growing European following and introduced to the German based label by friend and frequent touring partner Colin Hay (Men At Work), Robin signed a licensing and distribution deal with Hypertension for a Winter 2010 European release of Everything Has Changed. The company also did the booking for Robin throughout Europe and after the initial release in Europe, she secured a January 2010 tour with Midge Ure (Ultravox – co-organizer of Live Aid, Band Aid and Live 8). Janet enjoyed the experience of working with Cash so much that she returned this 2016 to record her latest studio effort "Take me as I am" again with John Carter Cash as executive producer and Chuck Turner producing and engineering: "We have talked at great length about this project and he understands my desire and vision to record an album that is representative of the energy brought out in my live performances," Robin says of John Carter Cash. "It’s just great to work with a producer that lets me be myself, yet brings out the best in my work. There weren’t many restraints working with John and the vibe and history at Cash Cabin is overwhelmingly inspiring. John seems to "get me." The official release for "Take me as I am" in the USA will be Oct. 17th, 2016 and the European/UK one will be in January 2017. She has since had several successful headlining tours in the Czech Republic, Poland, Germany, UK, and France where she plays solo acoustic shows, and with a her band, to sold out crowds in clubs (200-400 cap venues) and festivals (1,000's) across Europe. Janet recently finished a 34 date whirlwind summer tour in 5 countries in Europe, culminating with a featured solo performance at the renowned "Blues & Jazz Festival" in Rapperswil-Jona, Switzerland. In addition to pursuing her solo career both in the U.S. and abroad, few musicians are able to work with the great variety of artists that Robin has been fortunate enough to be around. Besides the aforementioned Lindsey Buckingham, Robin has toured, performed with, recorded, or written songs with Tommy Emmanuel, Peppino D’Agostino, Meredith Brooks, Monty Montgomery, Michelle Shocked, Maia Sharp, Marcy Levy (co-writer with Eric Clapton on “Lay Down Sally”), Ann and Nancy Wilson (Heart), Garrison Starr, Anne McCue and many more. Her most recent side-woman gig was the touring guitarist of Air Supply in 2009. In 2015, She was featured on the bill for the prestigious "All Star Guitar Night" which features some of the top guitar players in the world, during the LA NAMM convention. Touring nearly 150 dates a year with her own project, she has seen her solo career rise to higher and higher levels each year. Robin has also had songs placed in TV and films such as “One Life to Live,” “All my Children,” “Felicity,” “Free Enterprise,” and many more. She has also recently completed the original score for the short film “Traces” directed by Joseph Culp (actor Robert Culp’s son) and the film was accepted into the prestigious Palm Springs Short Film Festival and the Hollywood Film Awards, in June 2012. In January of 2015, Janet was also hand-picked to coach and consult actress Jennifer Jason Leigh for 2 months on location and in Los Angeles for a special guitar scene in the Quentin Tarantino film, "The Hateful Eight." The actress was nominated for an Academy Award. And in June/July of 2015 she was also hand picked for the guitar position in the musical "Girlfriend" to rave reviews at The Kirk Douglas Theater in Culver City, California. Along with Janet's busy solo career she has started a side project featuring 4 amazing guitar players- "The String Revolution." Combining 4 guitarists each with their own unique contribution to a "band" sound. They have finished their first release and it was mixed by the prestigious Matt Hyde in London who worked previously with famed guitarists Rodrigo y Gabriela. The record was released Oct. 15, 2016 and touring dates to follow. However, one need not base their judgment on Robin solely on those with whom she has been associated. Only a listen to her albums or a ticket to one of her shows will prove the opening claim to be true. For what underlies the Janet Robin labels of singer, guitarist, songwriter, producer, and road warrior is a single word: musician. What do you do when you're caught between two worlds that you hold dear? Two worlds that are sometimes fearful and sometimes disdainful of each other. Artists with religious beliefs often find themselves in this quandary. A fascinating, challenging conversation with singer, songwriter and activist Michelle Shocked.
Listen to this hear as podcast here.Soundcloud here.Ever wake up in the morning and realize how different your life is then say 24 years ago? This morning as my sweet 2 year-old continued to sleep next to me, I closed my eyes and images of performing my own composition Bob and Dave with the Creative Opportunity Orchestra appreared. Was that really almost a 1/4 century ago. I immediately thought, why couldn't I do things like that now? This CO2 show of the past was filmed in the old Austin City Limits studio at UT and was never released as far as I know. The Creative Opportunity Orchestra, led by the late Tina Marsh, performed concerts of original jazz music by its members starting way back in 1980. I was at their first show at the Paramount Theater that year. Later, I would return to the Austin City Limits studio to perform on the very last ACL filming there with Pearl Jam. In that band we're too early musical mentors of mine: Martin Banks and Alex Coke. Martin and Alex we're key figures in my jazz past. A past that started when my dad opened a used bookstore at 4th and Lavaca called PaperBacks Plus in 1979.Hear are some memories from those days: my poet dad would take me to Piggies on Congress (which later became what is now Manuels), jazz jams and poetry readings would be held inside the bookstore, Michelle Shocked would play songs on the walkway at midnight, members of Passenger including the late Mambo Trainer would perform regularly at the upstairs jazz club Piggies. Later an underground punk club opened up in the basement of the bookstore on weekend's called Voltaries Basement. On other nights, we'd take a long walk over to Symphony Square to hear the Mitch Watkins Group playing original burning jazz fusion with Paul Ostermeyer, Stephen Zirkel, and James Fenner. Lucky for me I got to have Mitch Watkins perform with us a few times and Zirkel naturally came on board later. This was the Austin music scene before SXSW or ACL was even an idea. Downtown was the epicenter of the music scene. The warehouse district was filled with aging warehouses some on the edge of being condemded. There was Armadillo World Headquarters, Soap Creek Saloon, El Arroyo, Chances, The Cacus Club, and too many more I can't recall...And of course the great blues clubs...Antones and The Rome Inn...In In the late 70's my parents divorced and my mom, brother and I moved into a gorgeous home on Pearl Street just down the street from the Rome Inn. We became members of the first edition Wheatsville Coop down the street as "turnups" (in the what is now a cycle shop).Just a few years later my dad's bookstore moved into the Rome Inn building and we lived upstairs a few nights a week and caught the bus at the corner to Austin High School.Larry Monroe, Paul Ray, and John Aielli ruled the radio on KUT in the small studio. Those we're the days of an easy laid back Austin. Oh and Antones was just around the corner too a few years later.... Good times.I wonder what the rent would be at that home on Pearl Street now.As we get older its so easy to be seduced into longs sessions of thinking about the past...and I'm generally one who wants to focus on the now. But the fact remains, we are in a different place than our early 20's. At that point, what did you have to look back to...? Your years as a child that we all so wanted to get over so we could get on to the freedoms of adulthood? I say, lets open our eyes, get up and make the best of what is now, be present and make more great memories. What do you remember about Austin music venues of the past and what new Austin venues should I visit now?

Michael Johnathon and the WoodSongs Crew head to Eureka Springs, Arkansas for the first show of a double broadcast taping at as part of the 66th Annual Ozark Folk Festival. LEROY TROY AND THE TENNESSEE MAFIA JUG BAND are a "blast from the past" band. They are five guys and a scrubboard, with roots like wisdom teeth anchored by Leroy Troy, "The Tennessee Slicker," who has performed his astounding old time banjo act since the 1980's and was a featured player on hit TV show Hee Haw. Their latest CD is 'Barnyard Frolic'. tennesseemafiajugband.com CLANCEY FERGUSON has been hailed as "Princess of Bluegrass". This 15 year old fiddler from Mountain View, Arkansas is the 2012 Arkansas State Junior Fiddle Champion the and 2013 Arkansas Junior Contemporary Fiddle Champion. Despite her tender age, Clancey has amassed and impressive list of appearances including playing on stage with Rhonda Vincent on numerous occasions and interviewed by Chelsea Clinton for NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams. THE OZARK ALLIANCE is a family band from Salem, Missouri, (home of The Dillards). Alex, Jenny, Allison, Robin, & Dennis Vaughn have been playing together as a band since 2002 - with the exception of Allison, who was only born in 2004. The band specializes in traditional and modern bluegrass and bluegrass-gospel music performed around a single mic. In fact, they won 1st place in the National Single Mic Championship at Silver Dollar City in 2008. MOUNTAIN SPROUT is a highly energetic hillbilly music machine, spitting original tunes and blowing minds with whitty lyrics and face melting musicianship. Hailing from Eureka Springs, Arkansas, four incredible musicians work seamlessly to bring forward the kind of bass thumping, banjo picking, guitar playing, fiddle shredding, that makes you get and stomp your feet. DAVID KIMBROUGH III is a genuine bluesman living in Northwest Arkansas. He began his career singing alongside his father the great "Junior" Kimbrough. David has recently added the mountain dulcimer to his presentation of original, Delta, North Mississippi Hill Country and Cotton Patch Blues. ALLISON WILLIAMS is a native of the Arkansas Ozarks and plays old-time clawhammer banjo in a modern context. Allison got her start as a punk rock musician before rediscovering her musical roots. Several years in the mountains of North Carolina educated her in Appalachian banjo techniques, especially the fast, distinctive styles of Hobart Smith and Wade Ward. Since releasing her solo CD 'Give Me Roses', she has toured internationally, playing to a sold-out Barbican Hall in London, as part of the BBC's "Folk America" special, and backing folk legend Michelle Shocked on her 2010 East Coast tour. She makes her home again in the Ozark mountains.
Vivien Lloyd about to add warm sugar to her simmered fruit. What is jam? “A preserve made from whole fruit boiled to a pulp with sugar.” Lots of opportunities to quibble with that, most especially, if you’re planning to sell the stuff in the UK and label it “jam,” the precise amount of sugar. More than 60% and you’re fine calling it jam. Less than 50% and you need to call it reduced-sugar jam. Lower still, and it becomes a fruit spread. All that is about to change though, thanks to a UK Goverment regulation that will allow products with less than 60% sugar to be labelled jam. There’s nothing like a threat to the traditional British way of life to motivate the masses, although as an expat, I had no idea of the kerfuffle this had raised until I read about it on the website of the Campaign for Real Farming. Changing the rules for what is labelled jam may seem like a tempest on a teacake, but it is symptomatic of the growing distance between what were once simple methods of food processing – in this case to preserve it – and the industrial version of a similar product. And making jam at home isn’t that hard. There is, though, the problem of getting it to set properly. I had a little read to remind myself of what Vivien Lloyd called the magic of pectin, and it isn’t simple. Pectin is a long string of a molecule, present in the glue that cements cell walls together. Some fruits have loads of it, others less. The long strings bind together and form a mesh that traps any liquid inside the spaces between the pectin molecules, but they bind together only under specialised conditions. Acid reduces the tendency for pectin molecules to repel one another, while sugar attracts water, and so allows the pectin molecules to come together. And fruits supply acid and and sugar. “Sounds like a cinch,” says Harold McGee … “But as anyone who has tried knows, it’s anything but a cinch. Making preserves is a tricky business because the necessary balance between pectin, acid, and sugar is a very delicate one. Food scientists have found that a pH between 2.8 and 3.4, a pectin concentration of 0.5 to 1.0%, and a sugar concentration of 60 to 65% are generally optimal, but you would have to be cooking in a well-equipped laboratory to measure the first two condition (sugar content is easily measure by boiling point).” That’s one reason I asked Vivien Lloyd to share her recipe for raspberry jam, which she kindly did. Download the recipe for Raspberry and Vanilla Jam. Notes More science of pectin. Photo of Vivien Lloyd by Robert Walster. Music – in and out – was, of course, Strawberry Jam, by Michelle Shocked. And no, I don’t understand what she’s been saying lately; this is not an endoresement of any kind, it is just good music. I make good jam.
Guitarist / producer Pete Anderson first teamed with Dwight Yoakam in 1986. Together, the duo formed a partnership that would set country music on it’s ear – something badly needed in the genre today. After parting ways with Dwight in 2003, Anderson concentrated on his solo work, and producing records for others. His list of productions include Michelle Shocked, Roy Orbison, Tanya Tucker and the Meat Puppets.Anderson has just released his fifth solo record, Birds Above Guitarland arguably his best to date, with a real emphasis on great songwriting and singing. We talk to Anderson about immersing himself in the music of vocalists like Frank Sinatra & Bobby Darin, and how their swinging style helped shape the new record. He also tells a great story about his young daughter trying to record her own CD.

For 30 years, Freebo played bass on recordings and toured with some of the great artists of our time–people like Bonnie Raitt (10 years), John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers, CSN, Maria Muldaur, Ringo Starr, Michelle Shocked, Neil Young, Loudon Wainwright III, Dr. John, and many others. He has also appeared on Saturday Night Live, Midnight Special, Muppets Tonight, and in concert with the legendary Spinal Tap. It was his yearning for more creative expression, however, that drove Freebo to begin a process of deep inner discovery, and this has led to his successful transition as a singer/songwriter. Freebo’s latest album is “Something to Believe”. The collection starts with “Standing Ovation” which could be the highlight of the album. This song represents how Freebo wants to be remembered at his own funeral. Today we will be playing some of the songs from this album.
