On this episode I'm joined by Sedrick Chisom as we discuss his latest exhibition at C L E A R I N G gallery, And 108 Prayers of Evil. Sedrick Chisom (b. 1989, Philadelphia) lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. He received a full scholarship to study at Cooper Union, where he completed his BFA in 2016 and was awarded the Jacques and Natasha Gelman Foundation Award for Exceptional Ability. In 2018, he received his MFA from the Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University. Chisom was awarded the 2018–2019 VCU Fountainhead Fellowship in Painting and Drawing at the Macedonia Institute and was a 2019 resident at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. At the center of Sedrick Chisom's practice is a commitment to confounding racial origin myths and pseudosciences toward creating apocalyptic fantasies in writing and painting. Appropriating imagery from Black Lives Matter demonstrations, medieval Christian iconography, and Greek mythology, Chisom questions who has the power to construct natural and social worlds, upending the authority of those worlds in the process. Chisom appoints himself a new mythmaker, one whose motivation is fundamentally pro-Black and who is committed to the acceleration of new imaginative possibilities. - Pilar Corrias gallery

In this episode, I'm joined by contemporary painter and printmaker Didier William. Didier's incredible work explores the diasporan experience, as well as what it was like to grow up gay in a conservative Haitian community. Over the past five years, Didier has had massive success in the contemporary art world. In this interview, we discuss his personal parameters for success, how he protects the sanctity of his creative work in the face of needing to make a living, and how he balances the ecosystem of his home and work life (especially since he and his husband welcomed a new baby!). We also discuss the pressure that comes from belonging to an underrepresented community in the context of marketing and production. Plus, why it's important to be mindful of “what the work can do, and what the work can't do” when it comes to social activism. More from the episode... Didier on defining success: “I spent a long time trying to sort of approach something that feels balanced, where the studio life, and the life outside of the studio, are in conversation.” How did finishing grad school at the start of the Great Recession affect Didier's outlook on success? We discuss market forces, and the importance of protecting the sanctity of your creative practice, even as you earn a living. How becoming a teacher set his creative practice free. How and why Didier tries “to make sure that whatever I do during the day reserves the best of me for the people I go home to in the evening, my husband and my daughter.” Why, despite all of the cultural romanticizing, creating art is a type of labor (and why that fact demands that we prioritize self care) The importance of building thoughtful relationships with other creators out of a desire for connection and collaboration, rather than just “networking.” Didier describes how his artistic practice evolved to include printmaking, and how it underpins the message he wants to convey in his work. Didier shares the advice that helps him get started every day in the studio: “Always have something in progress.” More from Didier William: Didier William is a painter/printmaker, originally from Port-au-Prince Haiti, whose epic collage/print/painting works, among many things, explore aspects of the Haitian diasporan experience, as well as attempting “to get closer to a truth that makes sense for black and brown people.” I met Didier within weeks of arriving in Pennsylvania when we both began work at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. He was the chair of the MFA program at the time and I was the chair of the new illustration program. Didier earned his BFA in painting from The Maryland Institute College of Art, an MFA in Painting and Printmaking from Yale University, School of Art, and is currently Assistant Professor of Expanded Print at Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University. A double creative in the arts community, Terrell is both a respected classically-trained actor of stage & television and a social advocate for visual artists, having now opened his third commercial exhibition space. While he has been collecting art since the age of 16, Terrell debuted his first gallery as Tilford Art Group in New York City in 1999, on an evening that also honored the late Dr. David C. Driskell. In 2002, in a move to Los Angeles, he began hosting art shows in his home before opening his first brick and mortar in 2003. Twelve years later, Terrell would rebrand his gallery at Band of Vices, but with a more intentional, collective mission to disrupt the art world and to seek more collaborations between creatives. Terrell Tilford received his Master of Fine Arts degree from Rutgers University's Mason Gross School of the Arts and his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California at Berkeley. While he still continues to make frequent appearances in television and on the stage, Terrell is approaching his 20th year representing artists and curating exhibitions and his dedication has never been more focused. Forever an innovator, he continues to use both of his platforms to bring the art collecting and entertainment communities together.ABOUT BAND OF VICESFounded in 2015, Band of Vices is an art and culture company committed to providing a platform to often overlooked creative communities and a narrative through ever-evolving initiatives, including a highly curated exhibition program, culturally-relevant strategic partnerships, mission-driven community programming, and more.Headquartered in the burgeoning West Adams Arts District of Los Angeles, Band of Vices believes in disrupting the limited business model for artists and creatives. The platform most recently launched its BoV collaboration laboratory, (coLAB), a new discovery space for creatives to express themselves through curation, exhibition, performance and merchandising. With two spaces, the Sacred House and now coLAB, BoV is further expanding its commitment to provide a platform for those historically undervalued, overlooked or cast aside. You can find The Way of Miracles film at https://thewayofmiracles.com The Way of Miracles First off, I highly recommend that you find the time to watch The Way of Miracles! It is a stunning depiction of the power of love and healing that exists in all of us. Here are some of the beautiful take-aways from this enlightened conversation: All healing starts with compassion and listening to your heart. It's about letting your heart talk to other hearts. There are actually two of you: your mortal self (the ego) and your immortal self (your soul). You can focus on the material world and self (your ego), or you can focus on developing your inner world and identifying with your higher self (our soul). Know your soul self and reorient your life to come from your soul self. Miracles are a natural part of life. You are a miracle. Give yourself the gift of 10 minutes of staring in the mirror, gazing at the center of your eye until you can feel your being. Become what you see! Start where you are. Start small, focus on daily gratitude and witness your thoughts, don't become them. There's nothing more important than miracles, and remember, you are most definitely a miracle. Final Thoughts In The Way of Miracles, Christina Vircillo Bresson and Mark Mincolla, Ph.D., show us that healing truly does come from a place of love. There's not one way to eat sustainably. If you dig into your own culture, you'll probably find traditional foods that are naturally in tune with the land - whether they make use of all parts of the animal, or indigenous varieties of corn or rice, or preservation techniques that don't require a fridge. What traditional foods did you grow up with? Today, Jane Z. sits down with award-winning poet and art critic John Yau, who curated the exhibit “Home Cooking,” now live at the LaiSun Keane Gallery in Boston until December 5. John Yau has published over 50 books of poetry, fiction, and art criticism. Born in Lynn, Massachusetts in 1950 to Chinese emigrants, Yau attended Bard College and earned an MFA from Brooklyn College in 1978. His first book of poetry, Crossing Canal Street, was published in 1976. Since then, he has won acclaim for his poetry's attentiveness to visual culture and linguistic surface. John Gellings found his love for photography with the purchase of his first film SLR camera when he was a teenager. From there, he became a student of the art form who performed at the top of his class as he earned his BFA from Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University. For the past two decades, he has continued to create from his roots in the darkroom, to a jaunt into creating music, to the moment where his move into New York City timed up with the purchase of his first digital SLR camera. This return to his first love came, this time, with a community of other photographers who John would meet up with to create together. This introduced him to a commitment and discipline to create throughout the Five Boroughs where walking ten or more miles and dedicating a full day to making images became his norm with or without his photographer friends. John's collections of photos range from sense of place images that forge a path of modern street photography, portraits of friends or strangers, and what he calls "random" (still life images that scream pop culture, nostalgia, interesting documents of reality.) His relationship with his wife and the start of his family life has led him to now live in Santiago, Chile. There, he has found a new location to photograph, with a whole new sense of light, culture, and humanity. All the lessons of his life- from his passion for skateboarding when he was coming of age, his love of music, his time working and living in NYC, and now his life in Chile as a husband and father inform his work, whether it be documentary in style or conceptual at heart. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/thestolenhourspodcast/message

Fran and Layqa discuss his work as an artist, his history as an immigrant, and what it means to him to have both his birth name, and his chosen created name. Most striking is how he sees his mural work as a bridge between the spiritual and the corporeal.
