Hamilton de Holanda is the world's foremost player of the Brazilian bandolim, a 10-stringed instrument that he developed by adding an extra two strings to the traditional mandolin. He's defined his own style of Brazilian jazz, blending a contemporary jazz sound with the regional folk style choro, which centers around the bandolim. De Holanda was a featured performer this past weekend at the University of Rhode Island's annual Guitar and Mandolin Festival.

Possessing a voice as cool and crystalline as an Alpine stream, Natalie Cressman draws inspiration from a vast array of musical currents. A prodigiously talented trombonist, she's spent the last 14 years touring as a horn player and vocalist with Phish's Trey Anastasio, while also performing around NYC with jazz greats Wycliffe Gordon, Nicholas Payton, Anat Cohen, Dave Douglas, and Peter Apfelbaum. Deeply versed in Latin jazz, post-bop, pop, and Brazilian music, Cressman has released three albums under her own name as well as three acclaimed duo albums with Brazilian-born guitarist Ian Faquini, her primary musical partner for the past decade. Together they've honed a singularly expansive creative communion encompassing their love of the Brazilian songbook, jazz, Impressionism and sophisticated pop songcraft. Focusing on their original songs, the duo's recordings include 2019's Setting Rays of Summer, 2022's Auburn Whisper, and the soon-to-be-released GUINGA, a tribute to the revered Brazilian composer and guitarist. Cressman's trombone prowess has earned her widespread recognition. In both 2019 and 2023 Downbeat awarded her “Rising Star Trombone” honors in the magazine's annual critics' poll.Drawing on her love of groove, cool R&B and jazz, Cressman released the solo albums, Unfolding (2012) and Turn the Sea (2014), followed by Etchings in Amber (2016), a gorgeous duo album with guitarist Mike Bono that introduced Cressman as a formidable musical force without her horn. She released The Traces EP in 2017, which expanded her creative reach into post-production with meticulously crafted soundscaped tracks inspired by R&B and indie pop.To see if Natalie Cressman &Ian Faquini are playing near you click on the link!https://www.nataliecressman.com/shows

Colleen 'Cosmo' Murphy is joined by the 80-year-old Queen of Brazilian Jazz, Flora Purim, from her home in Brazil to discuss her iconic 1973 LP 'Butterfly Dreams'. Influenced by both traditional Brazilian singers and the improvisations of American jazz divas like Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan, Flora Purim was one of the most adventurous singers of the 1970s. After meeting and marrying her husband, percussionist Airto Moreira, in their native Brazil, Purim moved with him to the U.S. in the late '60s. Though she worked with Stan Getz and pianist Duke Pearson before the decade ended, it wasn't until joining Chick Corea, Joe Farrell, Stanley Clarke, and Moreira in the original Return To Forever in 1972 that she became well known in the States. Purim showed considerable promise on Forever classics like '500 Miles High' and 'Light As a Feather' and lived up to it when she went solo with 1973's 'Butterfly Dreams'. In this episode, we sit down with the Meat Man himself, Trevor Vaughan. Trevor is a multitalented musician/recording artist that is constantly creating. Some of his current more active projects include Wound Man, Brother, Warstone, Wolf Whistle, Internal, among MANY others. A lot of people appreciate different genres of music, but Trevor is on a whole different level. Producing tracks ranging from gurgling goregrind to pummeling power violence is just the tip of the iceberg. You will find Trevor working on a dungeon synth under the name Papas Cherry Pipe, Cafuné - a Brazilian Jazz acoustic project, multiple solo indie-rock releases, and even an LP by ‘H1N1666', where the pigs from Simmons farm provide shredding grind vocals. After attempting to cover a small portion of his musical background, we round out the episode discussing his recent career change as a commercial scalloper and what it was like growing up around the New Bedford Waterfront. Brazilian jazz guitarist Bola Sete is considered one of the greatest – but also underappreciated – musical talents of his era. A new three-disc compilation, “Samba in Seattle: Live at the Penthouse, 1966-1968,” captures live recordings of Sete, who lived and performed in the Bay Area for decades, at a storied jazz club. Critics say the new album highlights Sete, who died in Marin County in 1987, at the prime of his career and brings much deserved appreciation to his artistry. The recordings, however, could have been lost forever if not for a few strokes of fate. We talk about the life and music of Bola Sete.

What you just heard is our guest setting an intention for this interview, by singing this little song in Haitian Kreyol. I’m happy to announce that we have our first drummer and percussionist on the show! I’ve seen him perform many times over the years and have always enjoyed something about his playing that is hard to describe. I guess I could say that it is as much about his Presence as his playing. He was born in Bronxville, New York, grew up in Western Connecticut, and made his way to California in 1974. He performs in and around the Bay Area playing with a large pool of musicians and plays in a variety of styles and genres. That said, he has a special passion for Haitian drumming, has studied seriously for many years, and performs regularly with two Bay Area Haitian dance companies. He has also been a member of the Brazilian Jazz guitarist/composer Ricardo Peixoto’s quintet for five years. Our guest is also a teacher, teaching both privately and at Sonoma State University, where he leads an ensemble in the Jazz Program. He is one of the first people I thought of having on the show when Daniel and I first started this project, so I’m thrilled that we finally got to sit down with him, and get to share our conversation with you! We are so pleased to welcome, Kendrick Freeman! kendrickfreeman.comRara Tou Limen with Daniel BrevilBlanche Brown leader of Hatian Dance Company, Group Petit La CroixJohn Salz
Our guest this week grew up in the Bronx, New York, currently lives in Sonoma Valley, California. She is a professional pianist who composes, performs and teaches a variety of genres, and has a passion for Brazilian Jazz. She started studying classical piano as a young girl and began attending the children’s program at Manhattan School of Music/Juilliard at age 11. Our guest has a BA in Piano Performance from University of Michigan School of Music, and she also wrote for, acted in and directed a feminist theater group at the University. She has been playing and performing since childhood, and since moving to California, has performed at many of the major Bay Area venues, The San Jose Jazz Festival, and has headlined The Healdsburg Jazz Festival with Grammy-winning Brazilian Jazz Icon, Leny Andrade. Our hard-working guest is also the music director for both a synagogue and a Christian church- and she happens to be a great story-teller. Her effervescent, joyful personality infuses her music and all that she does. We are thrilled to welcome our guest, Stephanie Ozer!Stephanieozer.com

Atlanta-based Alexandra Jackson is a classically trained pianist, whose heart and talent has turned to bossa nova, jazz and the Latin beats. She comes by her talent and her heart honestly: her grand aunt was Mattiwilda Dobbs, the African American coloratura soprano who was one of the first black singers to enjoy a major international career in opera and as the daughter of Atlanta’s first Black major, her household was filled with the music of Miles Davis, Earth, Wind & Fire, and Michael Jackson, as well as that of Johnny Hartman, Luciano Pavarotti, and Antonio Carlos Jobim. Alexandra studied Jazz at the University of Miami, where she was exposed to Brazilian Jazz and performed with Latin bands and Brazilian ensembles and later in Jazz festivals in the U.S. and in Europe. Her debut project: Alexandra Jackson: Legacy & Alchemy channels her musical loves and experiences: Brazilian Music, American Jazz & Soul, NeoSoul, and London Soul Jazz for contemporary audiences worldwide. This unity can be formed only among those who respect one another and cherish each other’s unique attributes and abilities, while working in harmony to compensate for one another’s weaknesses. In essence, many people having the same feeling, thought or aim toward a goal. This has been a major theme for Eyedentity over the years and through many transformations since its inception in 1997. Searching for their own voices in a family of giants, it can be witnessed in the desire of its founding members to individuate themselves from their legendary forefathers, all the while preserving, sharing and honoring their history as they forge ahead together into the musical unknown.Diana Purim began her musical career in 1972, touring with Chick Corea’s Original Return to Forever in the belly of her mother. She grew up on the road traveling like a gypsy from country to country with her parents, Brazilian Jazz pioneers, singer Flora Purim and percussionist Airto Moreira. Krishna Booker is the son of renowned Jazz bassist, Walter Booker, nephew of Wayne Shorter and godson of Herbie Hancock. Credited by Herbie in his book for introducing him to Hip Hop and the idea for “Rock It”, Krishna began his musical career beat-boxing for Herbie. He later went on to making original music with Diana, his wife and childhood friend. The two share a deep love of music and a background in Jazz, Funk, Brazilian and Latin Fusion. Their passion for all kinds of music fueled the fire of their creativity and together, they stretched the boundaries of Hip Hop by fusing it with all their multicultural musical influences. “For the purists, we remind them that even Jazz is an art form born of Blues and Classical music. In fact,” explains Diana, “all of the world’s music has evolved from its most primitive indigenous origins, being shaped and molded by geographical, political, social and cultural influence to become what it is today.”Using their Hip Hop experience to carry them through their first Trip Hop venture, they found some success with a single called “Heavy Interference” from their first release. “It was a struggle for us to find our true sound,” says band leader / composer / percussionist / producer, Krishna. “We’ve been influenced and inspired by so many styles of music and were using the Eyedentity platform to experiment with them all. Although we had some brilliant moments, we hadn’t achieved a homogenous and unified sound until now. I feel like we have finally found Eyedentity’s identity with this new album.”During the search for their unique Urban/Brazilian sound, they began to notice commonalities in the art and music of varying countries, especially within the slaveculture, music, spirituality and art of oppressed peoples. In Brazil, slaves were allowed to bring their culture from their countries of origin. We clearly see this reflected in their spirituality, dance, art, food and music. The slaves in America were more restricted and forced to abandon their culture for the customs of their oppressors or risk being beaten or killed for not complying. Yet somehow, they found other ways of expressing their authenticity without risking life and limb through the musical mediums of Jazz, Blues, Rock, Hip Hop, etc…
This hour: two musicians, two nations, one unifying sound. We sit down with Brazilian jazz artists Joe Carter and Isabella Mendes. We learn about their unique backgrounds and influences, and we listen to the music that brought them together. In this episode of PoPolitickin, we poltick with producer Off Balance of the Digital Martyrs crew. Bio- The sound of Northern California’s hip-hop trio, the Digital Martyrs, is both newfangled and distinguishable, which had always left a breathless impression on fans at attendance. Their objective in the industry mirrors the intent of hip-hop acts of yesteryear, to provoke and to stimulate. From the antagonistic but affirmative undertones in the lyrics, to the soulful and gritty instrumentals behind them, the Digital Martyrs have stayed successfully relevant despite there obvious movement away from pop-ish, shiny-swag-filled, bubble gum raps. Their efforts are to diverse the hip-hop brand in their sound fusions with old American funk and soul, Brazilian Jazz, and, at times, reggae, and utilizing the rhyme schemes which is only over-shadowed by its abrupt, political nuance. It is the hip-hop that is “all honest,” and “against the grain.” – KUMSFM Geek Thug Radio’s DJ and Live Manikins’ MC, Justin Rubio aka Mr. Lingo. With the anticipation of their new self-entitled album, the soundscape they have created will sure to deliver consistent work to their growing following. The Digital Martyrs distinct sound stems from a lifetime of musical influence, owning residual characteristics of artists they look to for inspiration, ranging from Immortal Technique to Brother Ali, Mos Def, to Sage Francis. Endeavoring to bring you something new and outside of the usual guitar spectrum, please allow me to introduce you to Latin jazz pianist Danny Green. We spent some time discussing his latest album, A Thousand Ways Home, a collection of tunes that shows Danny's special synthesis of jazz, classical, and various Latin styles of piano playing. In talking about some of my favorites on the album, we ended up talking about Danny's compositional process, which is fascinating blend of inspiration and reason. You will also hear the amazingly varied path his piece “Quintal da Solidão” took on its way to becoming a fully realized work, a path that spanned several studios and several countries! It is always interesting to hear musicians speak about creating a career in music, especially in times when that environment is not particularly benevolent towards us, and Danny had some interesting views on that subject. We also get to learn a bit about some Brazilian styles you might not have heard of and about one of the most prevalent structures in pop music. And for you diehard plucked stringers out there, you'll also hear some excellent playing on mandolin from Eva Scow, and guitar from Chico Pinheiro and Dusty Brough.
Traditionally, the great composers like Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven have also been virtuosos on their instruments- Bach on the organ, Mozart, Beethoven, Liszt, and Brahms on the piano, Paganini on the violin. In the classical guitar world this connection between performer and composer is even stronger, almost to the point of requirement. The list includes almost every guitar/lute composer we know, from Dowland, Sanz, Da Milano, Mudarra, and de Murcia to Tárrega, Barrios, Giuliani, Sor, and the list goes on… In today's classical guitar world, among the most prolific and successful participants in this tradition of performer/composer is Roland Dyens. His compositions and arrangements have become an integral part of today's classical guitar repertoire. The maestro was kind enough to give me an hour of his time between concerts and flights to discuss his composition and arranging, his love for the music of Fernando Sor, his improvisations, and lots more.
