Israeliterna hade under lång tid varit slavar i Egypten. Text:2 mosebok, kap 4-5Musik:Abide with me med Hank Jones & Charlie Haden av William Henry MonkProducent:Susanna Némethliv@sverigesradio.se
Tonight"s Jazz Feature is a tribute to the great arranger/composer/producer and music icon Quincy Delight Jones or simply "Q". Quincy passed away peacefully at his home in Los Angeles at age 91 on November 3, 2024. He was born in Chicago on March 14,1933. Quincy's incredible history is easily accessed on the internet. So we turn to the Jazz feature album and it's a big band recording of Quincy's distinctive arrangements and really put Quincy on the Jazz map. It was done in September of 1956 and titled "This Is How I Feel About Jazz". It got rave reviews and established Jones as a top notch arranger/composer along with his production skills. The band is full o all star players from trumpeters Art farmer and Ernie Royal to saxophonists Phil Woods, Zoot Sims and Lucky Thompson and trombone masters like Jimmy Cleveland and Urbie Green and pianist Hank Jones, vibes master Milt Jackson to bassists Paul Chambers and Charles Mingus. The album is a masterpiece of arrangements and leaves room for so many great soloists too. Enjoy the earlt important music of Quincy Jones.
Text:LukasevangelietMusik:Abide with me med Hank Jones & Charlie Haden av William Henry MonkProducent:Susanna Némethliv@sverigesradio.s
He was one of the greatest musical minds of the 20th century… and he hailed from Seattle. Songwriter, composer, arranger and producer Quincy Jones, died yesterday at the age of 91. The 28-time Grammy winner moved to the Pacific Northwest at the age of 10 and eventually graduated from Garfield High School. Jones credited Seattle's musical openness with shaping his style. He met Ray Charles here. In a typical night, they would play across the city, from the tony Seattle Tennis Club to hangouts on Jackson Street, which was in the city's red light district, playing classical, jazz, marches, and pop music. Jones played jazz trumpet. Quincy Jones described his time in Seattle for PBS' “American Masters” in 2021: "We had to play everything with school. We played Sousa. And you play classical music and Debussy… on the jobs… Ray Charles, we, played Debussey on some of the jobs and we had to play Big Fat Butterfly parody, a parody on a poor butterfly. We had to play absolutely everything." That musical openness and genre defying attitude was a thread that he carried throughout his life. In the 50's, Jones played with some of the jazz greats, including Herbie Mann, Zoot Sims, Hank Jones and Charles Mingus on Evening in Paris from his 1957 LP, “This Is How I Feel About Jazz." A few years later Jones played with Ray Charles on "One Mint Julep." But soon, Jones was branching out stylistically. He left an indelible mark on the music industry through his film scores... And while Soul Bossa Nova wasn't specifically WRITTEN for Austin Powers, it certainly became known as the theme song for the "International Man of Mystery..." He arranged songs for legends like Frank Sinatra. And in the 70's, when funk was EVERYWHERE, Jones turned it into gold, including the track "The Streetbeater," which became the theme song to Sanford & Sons... In the 80's Jones famously produced Michael Jackson's meteoric rise to stardom, with tracks like "Don't Stop Til You Get Enough." He butted heads with Jackson on the opening to Billie Jean... (He thought it was too long, Jackson disagreed.) And made the notorious phone call that got Eddie Van Halen in the studio to play guitar on "Beat It..." Quincy Jones, a giant of American music, is one of few producers to have number one records in three consecutive decades, the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s... Jones passed Sunday night at his home in Los Angeles. He was 91. Thank you to the supporters of KUOW, you help make this show possible! Text:Matteusevangeliet 17:20Musik:Abide with me med Hank Jones & Charlie Haden av William Henry MonkProducent:Susanna Némethliv@sverigesradio.se

Three great sessions by the pioneering bebop drummer when he was visiting the US from his home in Europe. The first was in Hollywood and features saxophonists Frank Morgan and Walter Benton along with Milt Jackson and Gerald Wiggins. The second is in NY with the Kenny Clarke-Ernie Wilkins Septet featuring the alto and tenor of Wilkins as well as his swinging arrangements and compositions (and Cecil Payne, George Barrow, Eddie Bert and Hank Jones). In between is the last - the 1955 Savoy session that represented the debut of the Adderleys - Cannonball and Nat, along with Jerome Richardson, Donald Byrd and Horace Silver. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/john-clark49/support

Tonight's Jazz Feature is an indirect tribute to my late Mother, whose Birthday Anniversary is today: May 20. This album was one of her favorites. It is a classic by the great vibist and Modern Jazz pioneer, Milt Jackson. Jackson and his co-star here is flutist and tenor saxophonist Frank Wess. Wess of course is one of the great practitioners of Jazz flute. The rhythm section is superb and led by Hank Jones on piano and indeed he's one of the finest. Eddie Jones (no relation to Hank) is solid on bass and Kenny Clarke is his usual masterful self on drums. Trumpeter, composer/arranger Thad Jones born March 28, 1923, was the middle son in a family that also produced younger brother Elvin Jones, perhaps best known as John Coltrane's longtime drummer, and pianist Hank Jones, who performed and recorded with almost everyone in his long career, as one of the first black musicians to have a long and fruitful career in the New York studios. Thad first made his mark on the national scene as a soloist and arranger/composer for the Basie band in 1954. When he moved to New York City in the 1960's, he founded a big band he co led with drummer Mel Lewis that still plays weekly at the Village Vanguard, still playing much of the music Thad wrote. In 1979 he moved to Copenhagen, Denmark where he lead the Danish Radio Big Band, and taught at the Royal Danish Conservatory. In 1985 he took over leadership of the Basie Band, but tragically passed way in 1986 of cancer.
Born in Santa Monica, California, Debbie Poryes found herself at the piano when she was five, practicing everything from Chopin to show tunes. Playing led to fascination with musical theory and structure, then jazz standards, composing, and improvising. Hearing Monk and Miles as a teenager, she fell in love with their music and decided to become a jazz pianist. At twenty, her first regular paying gig lasted a year at a Berkeley restaurant, playing five nights a week from 5 p.m. to midnight.Debbie has always gone her own way musically, even while maintaining a constant study through transcription and analysis of her favorite players and composers, such as Bill Evans, Wayne Shorter, Keith Jarrett, Horace Silver, Hank Jones, Sonny Clark, and Clare Fischer. Drawn strongly to 20th century classical music, she has been influenced by many composers, including Aaron Copland and Norman Dello Joio. In her early years as a musician in Oakland, her passion led her to play frequently at jam sessions while continuing to study classical music and jazz with local players. She composed and arranged music, and produced her own concerts with her duos, trios and quartets in addition to freelancing with various local singers and bands. She has performed all over the San Francisco Bay Area notably, at the Stanford Jazz Festival, SFJazz, Yoshi's Jazzclub, the Berkeley Jazzschool, the Healdsburg Jazz Festival, and the Piedmont Piano Company. True to her beginnings, she still loves playing in restaurants and played twice-weekly for 6 years at the New Orleans-styled Oakland restaurant Pican, only stopping when the restaurant up and closed! A significant aspect to Debbie's musical life has been her experience with tendonitis in her wrists. In her thirties, pain forced her to stop playing for two years, during which time she explored many avenues of healing. A breakthrough came when she happened upon Dorothy Taubman's piano technique, which emphasized maintaining the natural coordination of the fingers, hand, and arm. Absorbing this new way of thinking, Debbie continues to study it with her teacher John Bloomfield in New York and pass it along to her grateful students. The injury turned out to be a blessing in disguise, as it led not only to Debbie's development of a beautiful sound without harshness but also an ease and control she didn't have before. One has only to see Debbie play to appreciate how comfortable her hands are at the keyboard.Debbie felt the call to teach early in her career and continues to adore helping students understand jazz and further their own playing. Debbie has internet students around the globe in addition to her students at her home studio. She taught at the Berkeley Jazzschool for over 20 years as well as many summers at the Stanford Summer Jazz Program and has given presentations to the California Music Teachers' Association on how to teach jazz. In the summer of 2018 Debbie moved to Philadelphia. Her husband Tony Fels retired from his teaching job at the University of San Francisco and they, along with their daughter, returned to his hometown. She continues to teach her California and global students through the internet and is enjoying her new students and gigs in Philadelphia. Please visit https://www.debbieporyes.com/ for Debbie's incredible website. The Golandsky Institute's mission is to provide cutting-edge instruction to pianists based on the groundbreaking work of Dorothy Taubman. This knowledge can help them overcome technical and musical challenges, cure and prevent playing-related injuries, and lead them to achieve their highest level of artistic excellence. Please visit our website at: www.golandskyinstitute.org.
Rufus Reid is an extremely important but under-recognized figure in modern jazz. He's always been someone who's had one foot in the mainstream and one in the avant-garde — he did a lot of work with soul jazz and jazz-funk saxophonist Eddie Harris in the early 1970s, before joining Dexter Gordon's band when Gordon made his famous US comeback after years in Europe. He was also part of Andrew Hill's band in the late '80s, and has done a ton of straightahead records. But he was also a member of Jack DeJohnette's Special Edition in the early '80s, and he was one of the four bassists on Henry Threadgill's X-75 album, and he played on Muhal Richard Abrams' Things To Come From Those Now Gone, and he played with Anthony Braxton on the two Seven Standards 1985 albums with Hank Jones on piano and Victor Lewis on drums. He was also a member of the World Bass Violin Ensemble, which was a group of six bassists that made an album for Black Saint in 1984. Reid has also done a lot of work as a leader. He's made a string of albums in collaboration with drummer Akira Tana and various other musicians; he's done bass duo albums with Michael Moore; and he's led the Out Front trio with pianist Steve Allee and drummer Duduka Da Fonseca. In 2014, he released Quiet Pride: the Elizabeth Catlett Project, an album that featured a total of 19 instrumentalists and a singer all paying tribute to a sculptor whose work focused on the Black female experience in America. Reid is also an educator and the author of The Evolving Bassist, a book originally published in 1974 that's still a standard text for bassists. In this interview, we talk about Reid's work with Eddie Harris, with Dexter Gordon, with Henry Threadgill, and with his own ensembles. We talk about a six-CD set he made with Frank Kimbrough a few years ago, recording all of Thelonious Monk's compositions. We talk about his approach to the instrument, his influences, and about his new album, which is a duo collaboration with pianist Sullivan Fortner. This was a really enjoyable and informative conversation, and I think you'll come away from it with a new or perhaps a renewed appreciation for someone who's been a major figure in jazz for 50 years and isn't stopping yet.

Extreme Genes - America's Family History and Genealogy Radio Show & Podcast
Host Scott Fisher opens the show with David Allen Lambert, Chief Genealogist of the New England Historic Genealogical Society and AmericanAncestors.org. David begins Family Histoire News talking about his recent experience as a first time indexer for the National Archives for Revolutionary War pensions. Find out how you can do the same. Then, there's a new cemetery website that has a completely different take on how to do it. David explains. The Montpelier Foundation is creating a memorial for the enslaved and is holding a fundraiser for it. Get the details. Then, not many digs turn up 19th century ships. Under a road! But it has happened in Florida. David will tell you more. Next, drawing from the vast archives of Extreme Genes, Fisher shares two segments that fit the Halloween “Spooky Season.” The first guest is Hank Jones, long time author of books on “serendipity” in family history research. You won't believe some of the stories Hank has uncovered… and experienced… in our world. (Or is it our world and theirs?!) Then Sue Wynne, a New Jersey listener, shares her story about the ancestor that was buried, dug up four years later, found to be in great shape, and viewed by family and friends again! David then returns for Ask Us Anything. That's all this week on Extreme Genes, America's Family History Show!
What do two podcasters/scientists do when they have nothing to say? Well here at Not for Everyone industries, we take that as a sign to dive into one of the most highly debated and contentious topics on the internet: cancel culture. We know, we know... Right after offending all parents by giving air time to Caillou last week. This is just the edgy stuff you can expect from us. After a hypothetical takedown of Beyoncé that Jess wishes had been targeted at Taylor Swift instead, we pivot to lighter subjects. The lightest, actually; welcome to the rejected thoughts we've had written down for weeks but decidedly never brought to the show. Hank Jones enters the chat, and Caroline gets her daily dose of compliments. Plus responding to your DMs.__ This episode was edited by none other than our prince, Abi Newhouse.
