Discussion Running September 13 through September 28th at the Pumphouse Theatre in Calgary, Front Row Centre Players presents Nunsense, directed by Joey Sayer, choreographed by Karen Iwanski with musical direction from Donna Pearson. Kyle sits down with Joey Sayer to discuss the good sense it took to bring Nunsense to stage. Tickets: https://www.artscommons.ca/whats-on/frc-save-my-seat About the show: A zany, wholesome, hilarious musical revue presented by the Little Sisters of Hoboken, Nunsense is a hilarious spoof about the misadventures of five nuns trying to manage a fundraiser. Sadly, the rest of the sisterhood died from botulism after eating vichyssoise prepared by Sister Julia Child of God. Thus, the remaining nuns – ballet-loving Sister Leo, street-wise Sister Robert Anne, befuddled Sister Mary Amnesia, the Mother Superior Sister Regina, and mistress of the novices Sister Mary Hubert – stage a talent show in order to raise the money to bury their dearly departed. With catchy songs and irreverent comedy, Nunsense is sure to keep audiences rolling with laughter.

This week hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, and Andrew Gillum share the results of our NLP Election Poll. Y'all responded in FORCE! 336 people took part in our poll, which is more than some national polls. Thank  you, NLP Fam!! Our poll shows slightly different results on the attitudes of Black voters, maybe because we actually polled Black people…   You can check out an overview of our poll at this link.    In Politics Are Everywhere, Nunsense (Tiff's word) Addition–a Texas Democrat running for County Commissioner has been caught acting a FOOL! Taral Patel was arrested for sending himself fake racist messages on social media, messages that he put together in a collage and shared with his supporters. You can't make up this NUNSENSE.   Speaking of nunsense, the Biden campaign just spent $50 million on a new ad that Angela thinks may have missed the mark. She'll offer some free advice on how to make an effective ad while Tiffany and Andrew debate if the ads matter at all.    And in more important news, Tiffany catches us up on the most severe war-related humanitarian crisis in the world. No, it's not Gaza. It's Sudan, where millions of Sudanese people have been displaced and are at risk of famine. Surprised? Well, we're not surprised that you're surprised, because news from the continent is so under-covered!!    Help support the people of Sudan by checking out these links.   And of course we'll hear from you, our #NLPFan listeners. We are 138 days away from the election. Welcome home y'all!    —--------- We want to hear from you! Barry Creyton began his career at the age of 17 in theatre and in radio in Australia and by age 20, was playing leads on stage, and in national radio productions.  He also hosted his own weekly radio program devoted to theatre news and interviews. At 21, he made his Australian television debut as Lorenzo in a national television production of The Merchant of Venice.   For three seasons, he starred in the TV series The Mavis Bramston Show.  This ground  breaking show, the highest rated in the history of Australian television, dealt with topical and political satire.Creyton relocated to England for twelve years playing comedy and dramatic roles in London's West End - including Don's Party (Royal Court), Roger's Last Stand (Duke of York's), Ten Years Hard (Mayfair), Urban Guerilla  (Soho Poly), a revival of the musical Salad Days, and Liz, a musical based on Aristophanes' Lysistrata as well as several revues and the National Tour of Abelard and Heloise. On his return to Australia, Creyton starred in many theatre productions - Ayckbourn's Bedroom Farce, Season's Greetings and Absurd Person Singular, Frayn's Noises Off, and in Pack Of Lies, Side By Side By Sondheim, The Owl And The Pussycat, Suddenly At Home, The Philanthropist, and played twins in the comedy-thriller Corpse.He guest starred on many popular TV episodics. These roles were generally amorous cads or big-business villains - characters at odds with the comedies he played on the stage.  They included The Restless Years, The Young Doctors, Skyways, Cop Shop, The Sullivans, I Married a Bachelor, Cuckoo in the Nest, as well as guest star roles in TV movies, Image of Death, All at Sea, the Michael Powell feature, They're a Weird Mob and the BBC's Robert Louis Stevenson in Australia. He turned to directing, with the musical Nunsense which broke box office records all over Australia, and employed two companies playing simultaneously. A motorcycle accident during the run of Corpse resulted in a badly broken leg.  The long recuperation period enabled him to write a stage comedy, Double Act.  Since 1990, Creyton has worked almost exclusively in the United States, principally as writer and director. He relocated from New York to Los Angeles when commissioned to write a movie of the week for Hearst Television, while his off Broadway revue Secrets Every Smart Traveler Should Know ran for two and a half years in New York. His critically acclaimed adaptation of Noël Coward's Peace in Our Time for the Antaeus Theatre Company in L.A. received the Ovation Award and the L.A. Weekly Annual Theatre Award; the L. A. Times voted the production among the best world theatre of the year.He has appeared on stage at the Antaeus Theatre in Balzac's Cousin Bette, Shaw's The Doctors Dilemma and Moliere's School For Wives  and as Apollo in The Curse of Oedipus.Creyton returns to Australia periodically for theatre engagements, starring in Noël Coward's Blithe Spirit, directing and starring in his own plays, Later Than Spring and Valentine's Day (since produced in several languages and, along with his Double Act, in constant repertoire in Europe), and in 2007 he returned to Sydney's Ensemble Theatre to star in Peter Quilter's play Glorious, and again in 2010 in Quilter's Duets, in which he played four diverse characters. His young adult novels, The Dogs of Pompeii and Nero Goes to Rome, co-authored with American writer Vaughan Edwards, are published by Random House, and his novel Murder is Fatal, an affectionate parody of noir movies, was published in 2017.His novel The View from Olympus Mons, was published in 2022 by NineStar Press. The STAGES podcast is available to access and subscribe from Spotify and Apple podcasts. Sheila Bradley is one of the country's most experienced and best-loved music theatre stars, with a career that has spanned 70 years working all over the world. Born in Essex, U.K., Sheila was brought to Australia in the 1950s by J.C. Williamson's to play the lead in Grab Me a Gondola. She had an established career as a lead singer with the George Mitchell Singers and playing Lalume in Kismet opposite Alfred Drake in the West End. Sheila quickly decided on Australia as home, and so begun a litany of leading roles in plays and musical theatre around the country. Sheila was the nation's original Nancy in Oliver, playing opposite Johnny Lockwood as Fagin. Celebrated turns include Princess Winnifred in Once Upon a Mattress, Anna Leonowens in The King and I, Sharon Mclonegran in Finian's Rainbow, Vera Charles in Mame, and Mrs Peachum in The Threepenny Opera. Performances in revue at the Phillip Street theatre, alongside colleagues Gordon Chater, Johnny Ladd and June Salter, confirmed her position as a fine comedienne with a dynamic voice. Her indelible presence made it's mark in productions right up to the early 2000s with performances of The Wizard of Oz, Nunsense 2, Crazy For You, Jolson, Hello Dolly!, Follies in Concert, Me and My Girl, My Fair Lady, The Pirates of Penzance, and in pantomime and theatre restaurant. Sheila is one of Australia's much loved and enduring performers. She recently celebrated her 90th birthday and retains the energy, humour and passion that made her a star several decades ago. It was indeed a tremendous privilege to share a couple of hours with the wonderful Sheila Bradley. The STAGES podcast is available to access and subscribe from Spotify and Apple podcasts. Like the Sondheim song says, this trooper is, at age 90, "still here." She was born in Canada in 1933 and grew up with a marvelous knack for making faces and getting laughs. The then-19-year-old met the much older Phil Ford in Alaska while both were playing different clubs in 1952. She was a quick fill-in after his female partner accidentally broke her ankle. They married two years later and continued performing together in night clubs with Phil serving as the straight man. The plain-Jane, rubber-faced singer/comedienne with the prominent dimples and toothy grin had her customers alternately rolling in the aisles with her "chipmunk" routines and sobbing in their beers with heart-wrenching versions of torch songs.  From then on Ford and Hines became a hot commodity in niteries, Las Vegas showrooms and on TV variety shows hosted by the likes of Ed Sullivan, Merv Griffin, Mike Douglas, Jimmy Dean and Johnny Carson. In 1965 it all culminated in the role of a lifetime for Mimi when she replaced Barbra Streisand in "Funny Girl" on Broadway in the role of entertainer Fanny Brice. The part of the famed Jewish torch singer/comedienne fit like a glove and Mimi stayed with the show for a healthy 18 months, putting her own indelible stamp on the role.  She also recorded albums during this peak and went on to appear in acting parts on TV, including "Love, American Style" and, more recently, "Frasier."  Surviving several personal and professional roadblocks over the past few decades, the indefatigable Mimi continues to headline in nightclubs, music halls and the touring stage, both here and abroad, reuniting on several occasions with Ford (who died in 2005 at age 85). More recent musicals have included "Sugar Babies," "Nite Club Confidential," "Sugar," "Pippin" and "Nunsense."

With episodes nearing 350 in the STAGES archive, it's time to revisit conversations featured in our previous seasons. STAGES spotlights such episodes, in case you missed them the first time ‘round - or so you can simply savour, a second listen. Either way, you'll be accessing precious oral histories from the people who were there, on and around our stages. Dolores Dunbar possesses an energy that has equalled that of her teenage students. In her role as Head of Musical Theatre at the McDonald College of Performing Arts she has contributed to the development of the next generation of performers with a knowledge garnered from extensive industry experience in a variety of roles. After several decades as nurturer, guide and mentor, Dolores is stepping down from her teaching role; but is certainly not stepping away from the industry she adores. She made her professional stage debut in the Australian company of Funny Girl for J.C. Williamson's. A stack of shows followed for Dolores, including My Fair Lady, Fiddler on the Roof, Chicago, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, Les Miserables and Shout. Other creative roles have seen her choreograph the immensely successful production of Nunsense, serve as Company Management and direct productions of Eurovision, Copacabana and Grease. Always ready with an amusing anecdote that serves as a brilliant history lesson, Dolores is a walking encyclopaedia of our musical theatre past and the many characters who have inhabited its stage. We should all maintain the optimism, energy and passion of Dolores. She is a great champion for all of us to aspire toward. It is a joy and honour to revisit this conversation with Dolores and celebrate her immense contributions as Performer and Teacher. Bravo Dord!

THE FANTASTICKS COMPOSER: Harvey Schmidt LYRICIST: Tom Jones BOOK: Tom Jones SOURCE: Edmond Rostand's play Les Romanesques (1894) DIRECTOR: Word Baker PRINCIPLE CAST: Rita Gardner (Luisa), Kenneth Nelson (Matt), Jerry Orbach (El Gallo) OPENING DATE: May 3, 1960 CLOSING DATE: January 13, 2002 PERFORMANCES: 17,162 SYNOPSIS: Matt and Luisa are two star struck lovers separated by a wall their feuding fathers erected. They escape the confines of their homes and struggle to form a relationship based on trust and understanding.   David Arthur examines the socio-political climate which allowed the intimate, off-Broadway musical The Fantasticks to become the longest-running show in American history. Abandoning a desire to adapt Les Romanesques as a cowboy-infused musical hoedown, Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt delivered producer Lore Noto a lyrical folktale that took Greenwich Village by storm and was lauded by notable celebrities, if greeted stoically by major critics. The small cast musical with experimental subject matter paved the way for more commercially successful musicals to incubate in off-Broadway theatres, such as Little Shop of Horrors, Nunsense, and Hedwig and the Angry Inch. As a long-standing member of the Lehman Engel BMI workshop, he is the recipient of the Jerry Harrington Award. In addition to writing the book and lyrics for the NYMF award winning, ABOUT FACE with music by Jeffrey Lodin, David along with Brian Lasser, contributed material to the MAC award winning revue, HERE'S TO OUR FRIENDS. For the concert stage he has written for Randy Graff, Judy Kuhn, Karen Mason, Marin Mazzie, Donna Murphy, and Barbara Walsh. Along with the music, lyrics and book for SARATOGA TRUNK SONGS, current projects include the book and lyrics for NOBODY SLEEPS WELL IN CASABLANCA with music by Douglas J. Cohen, and the book and lyrics for ODDLY ENOUGH with music by Mary Feinsinger, along with a new piece, SPEAK OF THE DEVIL with book, music and lyrics by David Arthur.   SOURCES The Fantasticks, Original Cast Recording, MGM (1960) The Fantasticks by Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt, published by Applause Libretto Library (2000) The Fantasticks starring John Davison and Susan Watson, directed by George Schaefer, NBC (1964) The Fantasticks starring Jean Louisa Kelly and Joey MacIntyre, directed by Michael Ritchie, United Artists (2000) Try To Remember: The Fantasticks starring Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt, directed by Eli Kabillio, Zeitgeist Films (2003) The Amazing Story of The Fantasticks: America's Longest Running Play by Donald C Farber and Robert Viagas, published by Citadel Press (1991) Learn more about your ad choices.
