What does it really take to stay strong into your 70s — physically, mentally, and emotionally? In this episode, I sit down with Steve Swenson, one of America's most respected alpinists, to talk about endurance, aging, and the habits that have kept him moving for decades.Steve has climbed Everest and K2, completed first ascents in the Karakoram, and summited Everest without supplemental oxygen — an experience that strips away ego and rewards preparation, judgment, and restraint. But this conversation isn't about chasing summits. It's about what Steve has learned over a lifetime of extreme environments: why endurance matters more than talent as you age, why strength training becomes non-negotiable in your later years, and why staying uninjured is often the biggest win of all.We talk about:What climbing Everest without oxygen actually feels likeHow Steve trains to stay strong and capable into his 70sWhy consistency beats intensity over the long runStrength training, sarcopenia, and aging wellPartnership, judgment, and making smart decisions under stressThis is a grounded, experience-driven conversation for anyone thinking seriously about longevity — not just in sport, but in life.---

They reveal the hidden blind spots that cause even the best parents to rationalize smartphones and gaming systems as “good gifts,” especially during the emotional pressure of the holidays.Together, they explain why teaching teens to “use social media wisely” isn't the solution, why willpower can't beat persuasive tech, and how guilt drives parents to hope their kids can handle technology they're not developmentally ready for. Melanie and Dr. Stacey offer simple, practical alternatives: what to give instead of screens, how to plan a healthier holiday, and how to lead with confidence rather than emotion.A timely, encouraging conversation to help families avoid Christmas regret and give their kids the gift of a healthier, screen-strong childhood.Support the showDon't forget to subscribe, rate, and leave a review if you enjoy the episode. Today's episode is with someone who is regarded as one of the best ski coaches on the planet, yet this is not a conversation about skiing. The things my guest has experienced over the years through teaching, coaching, and working in the mountains in unpredictable conditions hold valuable lessons for us all. Warren Smith is one of Britain's leading professional free skiers, an Internationally Qualified Performance Coach, creator of the Warren Smith Ski Academy and someone who has spent several decades helping people understand their bodies better to help them move and ski with more freedom. Warren has been a sponsored Volkl athlete for over 10 years and is one of the most innovative instructors working in the Alps and is held in high regard for the research and development he carries out combining Ski Technique, Ski Biomechanics and Ski Physiology. As well as coaching tens of thousands of recreational skiers, he is also well known for being the ski instructor that many high profile individuals seek out when wanting to improve their skills, including Prince Harry, Heston Blumenthal, Laurence Dallaglio and Bradley Wiggins. I myself have known Warren for around two decades having sought him out in my mid 20s when I first started getting into skiing because I was deeply fascinated by his philosophy, which made a lot of intuitive sense to me.  In our conversation, we discuss: Why so many of us feel limited by our bodies and how simple, five-minute functional exercises can help Why differences in strength or mobility between the two sides of the body are incredibly common, and how they affect everything from skiing to running to daily movement. What Warren's injuries have taught him about resilience, patience and rehabilitation. Why fear on the mountain mirrors fear in life, and how breaking challenges into smaller steps can help us stay calm and move forward. The mental and emotional benefits of elevation and nature, and why gaining perspective from a higher vantage point can help us reset and unwind. The life lessons Warren learned from surviving an avalanche and losing friends in the mountains Warren's incredible life story from growing up in a council state to living in one of the most prestigious ski resorts in the world. This is not just a conversation about skiing, but one that reminds us that when we prepare well, stay curious and look after ourselves , we can keep doing the things we love for longer. Like California's towering redwoods that survive through interconnected root systems, our spiritual growth depends on community rather than isolation. God designed us to grow through relationships that provide accountability, encouragement, and spiritual sharpening. When we isolate ourselves, especially during difficult times, we become vulnerable to spiritual attack and stagnation. The early church model shows us the importance of gathering not just for teaching, but for fellowship, meals, and prayer. True spiritual community breaks us out of echo chambers that only validate our feelings, instead providing voices that challenge us toward growth. Faith is contagious - when we surround ourselves with wise, spiritually mature believers, we burn brighter and stand stronger together. (Yes, this is the one with the ping pong balls)

It's the question parents everywhere are asking—and today, we're finally going to answer it.In this episode, Melanie is joined by special guest and fellow mom, Hayley, who recently went on the journey of deciding what kind of phone her son should have. When Hayley casually mentioned that she uses a flip phone, Melanie knew she needed to get her on the show to unpack the whole story—and the bigger dilemma every parent is facing in today's digital world.Together, they walk through The Grand Smartphone Experiment—how we all went from simple flip phones to handing miniature supercomputers to 12-year-olds, and why the cultural pendulum is finally swinging back toward sanity.Melanie and Hayley revisit the flip-phone era, the arrival of the smartphone, the “let's give these to our kids” panic years, the rise of “safe phones,” and the slow slide back into danger as kid-phones become more like adult smartphones. Most importantly, they answer the real question:What do kids actually need—developmentally, emotionally, and socially—when it comes to tech? This conversation offers parents clarity, confidence, courage, and a fresh perspective on what independence really looks like. In today's episode, Gina shares with listeners the Serenity Prayer (popularized by Alcoholics Anonymous) and how it can help those of us suffering from anxiety. Though the prayer is thought to have been written by Protestant theologian Reinhold Niebuhr, the prayer is non-denominational and even applicable for those of us who are not religious at all. The messages contained in this prayer are both personal and universal. Please visit our Sponsor Page to find all the links and codes for our awesome sponsors!https://www.theanxietycoachespodcast.com/sponsors/ Thank you for supporting The Anxiety Coaches Podcast. While we have touched on the prayer previously, today's episode aims to explore it in depth, offering five key reminders to help individuals summon its wisdom in challenging times. We begin by revisiting the essence of the Serenity Prayer, originally penned by Reinhold Niebuhr. Most people recognize its familiar lines, “God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference.” Despite its Christian roots, the prayer has transcended religious boundaries, allowing anyone grappling with life's uncertainties to find solace within its message. The universality and simplicity of the language are what make it stick, serving as a mantra for countless individuals seeking peace amidst the chaos of their thoughts and feelings.Through my discussion, I emphasize the importance of acceptance as a foundational element in achieving serenity. Acceptance, often misconstrued as complacency or passivity, is an active engagement with reality. It requires recognizing the limits of our control and redirecting our energy toward aspects of life that we can influence. I encourage listeners to reflect on the areas of their lives where acceptance is essential, underscoring that embracing this concept can lead to a more peaceful existence without equating it to surrendering to defeat.#SerenityPrayer, #AnxietyCoachesPodcast, #MentalHealth, #Acceptance, #Courage, #Wisdom, #Surrender, #PersonalGrowth, #AnxietyRelief, #InnerPeace, #FaithAndTrust, #KnowTheDifference, #ChangeWhatYouCan, #LifeJourney, #PanicAttackRecovery, #CalmTheStorm, #SelfCare, #NervousSystem, #InspirationalQuotes, #WiseWords, #TimberHawkeye, #Niebuhr, #AAWisdom, #Humility, #UniversalTruth, #FindYourSerenity, #DailyPractice, #HabitChange, #SelfImprovement, #MakeAShift, #BeBrave, #StayStrong, #SelfReflection, #ConsciousLiving, #GinaRyan, #ACPSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

In this powerful and eye-opening episode, host Melanie Hempe sits down with Amy Eytchison, a mother of four grown children, to have an honest conversation about one of the most overlooked issues in parenting today: video game addiction among boys. While the nation is finally waking up to the dangers of smartphones and social media for our daughters, many parents are missing the other half of the digital crisis—our sons, who are quietly slipping away behind glowing screens. Together, Melanie and Amy uncover why gaming is not “just a game,” how it preys on boys' developmental needs, and why so many young men are struggling to launch in life. They discuss the cultural blind spots keeping parents in denial—like “he's safe at home,” “he's smart, so I'm not worried,” or “it's just how boys socialize”—and reveal the neuroscience behind why gaming can rewire a child's brain and fuel depression, loneliness, and loss of purpose.Whether you're a parent, educator, or friend, this is an essential listen for anyone who cares about helping today's boys grow into strong, healthy, and purpose-driven young men.Resources Mentioned:Start your family's 7-Day or 30-Day Digital Detox through the ScreenStrong Connect community.Explore the Kids' Brains & Screens Home Edition for science-based tools and family conversation guides.Visit ScreenStrong.org for more information, resources, and upcoming events.Articles Referenced:"Tyler Robinson and America's Lost Boys”'Failing at life': Psychiatrists reveal what made Tyler Robinson ideal lone wolf in Charlie Kirk caseThe Psychology of Charlie Kirk Killer Tyler Robinson Predicted by PsychiatristSupport the showDon't forget to subscribe, rate, and leave a review if you enjoy the episode. In today's episode, Melanie sits down with Beth, a high school teacher, to hear her firsthand experience with the new phone-free classroom policy this school year.Beth shares the contrast between last year's inconsistent approach—where teachers set their own phone rules, leading to confusion and frustration—and this year's unified, zero-tolerance policy: no phones, headphones, smartwatches, or personal devices from bell to bell. The results have been remarkable. Students are talking and connecting with each other, engaging more with their teachers, and showing up to class happier, less stressed, and better rested. Teachers are noticing fewer distractions, better focus, and improved productivity in class.Of course, there are challenges to keep an eye on, like students attempting to sneak in earbuds or use smartwatches, and some adjusting to moments of boredom without their devices. But overall, the shift has been transformative—for both students and teachers. This episode offers an inspiring look at what really happens when schools go phone-free.Support the showDon't forget to subscribe, rate, and leave a review if you enjoy the episode.
