Survival Jobs: Is it a a phrase from multi-hyphenate jargon, career pivot or even a problematic term? Culturally, young people have shifted from gaining work experience (and paying for cars, college or just supporting the family) to gaining the "right" kind of work experience. Even as the pandemic displaced so many workers, there are stigmas around what's a “worthy” job and the "right" way a career should progress. According to backstage.com a “survival job is a job someone takes to pay the bills while pursuing a career they love.” Co-hosts Mallory, Austin and Katherine circle up to discuss a listener suggested topic (thanks Kristen!). We parse this definition and more by exploring the complexities, hang ups and privilege tied to the concept. Send your thoughts and questions to BloodSweatCareersPod@gmail.com

This week we find the special ingredient that makes Rory Leahy such a great guest! Rory started his career in the army leading him to a eye-rolling stint as a quality control lab technician (read: taste tester). He loved his role as an EMT while waiting for a position to open up to be a firefighter. An eye injury meant that dream would never come true, so he ditched the low-paying gig (Yes, most people working in healthcare make minimum wage). Today, he's found success as a chef running his own kitchen at Swill Inn in Chicago. Co-hosts Austin, Mallory and Katherine talk with Rory about finding Buddhism, finding your place in a role, and how what we're "meant" to do is sometimes the skill we take for granted. Denver-based Kelsey Sanders is a Neuro Physical Therapist who specializes in dizziness by day. She's also a weekend warrior and micro-influencer who explores the Rocky Mountains with her pup Oliver for @fourpaws.twofeet on Instagram. Her dual roles offer the chance to pursue both passions and impact people both online or IRL (in real life). Co-hosts Katherine, Mallory and Austin speak with Kelsey about the pressure to perform, the good/bad/ugly of social media, and the power of not falling prey to expectations. She also talks about how to explore in your own backyard and when to know your limits. A great episode for anyone wondering how to balance a passion with a profession.
We're back! After major moves (we're almost bi-coastal?) and literal surgery (on the throat, no less) your three hosts gather for a quick and loose catch up to talk what's new in their lives and chat about what's to come in the second half of the inaugural season. Mallory, Austin and Katherine also share highlights from past episodes (spoiler alert: Austin and the rest are calling favorites between these digital creations) and what to look forward to in upcoming episodes with financial experts, cosmic bosses and HR powerhouses who share their insights to how to make it as a multihyphenate.
In the before times, Adam Koch was an incredibly busy set designer living in New York and working all over the US. His time was consumed by running his own business and constant rotation of projects as a designer - miniaturist - puppeteer. All of that came to an unexpected and swift halt when NYC/the world were "sleeping beauty-ed" (our new, better term for shutdown at the beginning of the pandemic). With his days no longer consumed by work, Adam was finally able to come "out of the closet" as a multi-hyphenate. Since childhood, Adam has loved tiny spaces and during quarantine he has been able to build (we are talking from scratch-to-latch, people!) his own dollhouses. He runs a very successful miniature account @dollhousetherapy - where host Austin Mark first fell for this theater snack - which is simultaneously a love letter to tiny settings and a status report on his most recent creations. Adam offers insights and wisdom! He keeps it real, making points to only later argue against himself (his wording), which we think is the magic of a wonderful, reflective and thoughtful conversation. Adam not only has the looks and the talent, he's got the smarts too. You're in for a treat! You can find Adam' on Instagram at: @dollhousetherapyand @instadamkoch Check out his website: adamkochassociates.com And follow along on Facebook: www.facebook.com/adambkochand www.facebook.com/dollhousetherapypage
This week on the pod we speak with Maker Eric Angus. Eric opened our eyes to the maker universe and showed us how the term is certainly in conversation with multi-hyphenate. Eric makes sustainable skateboards, works with cement (have you ever seen a cement lake?), is on the install team at an art museum AND is starting his own collaborative studio (phew
This week on the pod we speak with bud tender - artist - & hotel management specialist Miles Gordon Miles made the leap to the cannabis industry filled with a “whole lotta hope.” After nearly a decade into a career in hospitality and hotel management he realized that he wanted to make a BIG career shift (spliff?)... He left his big time job in management at a luxury hotel on the Las Vegas strip without a sure thing, just the hope & belief he'd make it in the newly legalized weed industry. It's relatable listening to his journey of highs (OK, done with the puns...promise!) and inevitable lows...the time he decided to be a self sufficient artist during a pandemic felt especially resonate to our hosts... Miles describes the dance of whether to make your passion your profession or to leave it as a hobby and take on a career...who doesn't dream of making the thing they love to do the thing that makes them big bucks? From art to hotels to cannabis to art back to cannabis Miles' career story has been anything but basic. You can find Miles' art at: chacochip.com @chacochip_art Or connect with him directly at: @chacochacochip Reach out with inquires about his amazing abstract paintings!
Lyla Weinstein is a kindergarten / first grade teacher who infuses her life with creativity and passion so that she can bring vibrancy, dimension and joy to the children in her class room. Her professional journey is rooted in teaching, but her wide array of interests also sustain her outside of the classroom. Passionate about art, Lyla uses oil pastels, knitting and writing to keep her inspired both personally and professionally. A gardening hobby discovered by her neighbors is beginning to blossom into a part-time business. Although she's been teaching since she was 18, young Lyla dreamed of being a scuba diving instructor. As it has for so many, the pandemic has forced Lyla to question her professional path. It is possible that the effects of the pandemic have been most acutely felt in our classrooms. Teaching during 2020 (and sigh, 2021) has been a challenge, calling into question so much about the way we educate our young people. We are grateful to Lyla for coming on the pod to share candidly the difficulties of teaching virtually as well as emanate her positivity. After speaking with Lyla we have decided that teachers are definitely multi-hyphenates and are (newly) big proponents of Zoom dance breaks!
Degrassi is a Canadian teen drama known for serving authentic and boundary-pushing realness and for giving the world Drake (yes, that Drake). TV's longest running TV series also gave us the incredible Christina Schmidt — an actress, turned body-positive model, turned influencer for fashion, wellness, & lifestyle. Schmidtt nearly broke the internet with her appearance in Drake's "I'm Upset" Degrassi reunion video. But, she isn't defined by her early success, far from it. We are joined by the Canadian model/actress/influencer to talk behind-the-scenes tea of model life, being an influencer during quarantine, and how our co-host Austin Mark slipped into her DM's, resulting in a lasting friendship. What happens if you feel bad about being a multi-hyphenate? Ditching the dreams of law school Lauren Ford took on a range of positions at Vogue, the state of New York, financial planning and Target. After she decided to not beat herself up about an unexpected career path, Lauren learned how to embrace self care. She also shares how she let go when jobs didn't turn out quite like she expected. Austin, Mallory and Katherine speak with Lauren this week about how to define what success means to you! We can't wait for you to meet Lauren, a new mom, fellow grad student and a good friend of the pod.
Millennials (and Gen Z) have been blamed for upending decades-long industries like pricy engagement rings, buying homes, purchasing new cars, and working with the same company until retirement. Through all this blame (oh no, there goes JC Penny!), have any of these naysayers stoped to wonder why? It might not be what you think. Did you know minimum wage peaked in 1968 at $8.68 (adjusted for inflation)? Since it was last raised in 2009, it has lost about 10% of its purchasing power? That gig work has grown from 8% to 24% according to a recent survey — and for those polled is essential to meeting basic income? That in nine states, more than 4,000 Amazon employees are on food stamps? Welcome to the unluckiest generation. This week is all about why we're 'Shining Bright Like a Dimond,' but not buying any. Surviving An Unlivable Wage documentary- https://youtu.be/GbvNhQ4lYLE Coming of age during an economic downturn- https://youtu.be/ikp0Qfgxmkc Gig work has grown exponentially with 24% of respondents saying they do gig work and the reason is essential or important to meeting basic income needs- https://www.dataforprogress.org/blog/2020/3/30/insecure-gig-work-america
This week we talk about the balancing act that is being a multi-hyphenate. Framed through the lens of a career in the hospitality industry we discuss how self-care can be put on the back burner. Sometimes it takes big life moments (read: getting fired, a divorce, or a family illness) to force a renewed look at how you are taking care of yourself, not just your pocketbook. Entrepreneur, hospitality expert and writer Kate McKiernan brings her wisdom and perspective to the pod. Through insights from her past and present she speaks to how a career as a multi-hyphenate can be taxing, exciting and if nothing else winding. This week we talk about advocacy in its many forms. Political and social advocacy, advocating for your self at work, and advocating for your passions as a multi-hyphenate. We're joined by communications specialist Brittany Crocket, who fills her days as a Director of Partnerships & Licensing for a nonprofit and as a Senior Account Executive for a communications company. A former broadcast journalist, Brittney discovered her ability to shed a light on the voiceless. She also shares how she learned to embrace her confidence, fight for equity in the cannabis space, and set up as a leader, even when it felt like she wasn't ready. We're also trying to channel Brittney's confidence: "If I love my work, I'm unstoppable."
So, do you feel like an imposter? Maybe you feel like a fraud at at work. What about devaluing your worth, aka charging less than pays the bills or acting like your accomplishments don't matter? Well, you might be suffering from imposter syndrome. This episode we explore the term coined in 1978 by two American psychologists, Pauline Clance and Suzanne Imes. Turns out the more successful you are, you might be feeling even more like you don't “deserve” it. We unpack how major multi-hyphenates like Michelle Obama and Maya Angelou suffered from this insidious mindset. Plus, we talk about financial imposter syndrome — perhaps, you're just anticipating the rug being pulled out from under you? — and offer tips for how to shake the anxiety once and for all. This week we dig into the daily struggle of being a multi-hyphenate, which can be both liberating and totally overwhelming. Co-hosts Katherine, Austin and Mallory explore the feeling that at any moment you can reinvent yourself through new knowledge and skills (this is the first day of the rest of your life…). At the same time, juggling multiple roles and passion projects is a constant need to know more/learn more/stay at the cutting edge of multiple fields. Not sure what a trap versus a trick means? Neither did Austin or Katherine, but the whole crew dove into what this push and pull can look like for today's overworked, over-scheduled and overexcitable multi-hyphenates. Interested in learning more about multi-hyphenate Stacey Abrams and her latest crusade to end systematic voter suppression? Head to FairFight.com to find out why advocating for fair elections is so. very. important. VoteSaveAmerica.com is also an excellent resource for how to register, get involved in local elections, and ‘adopt' states that you want to support.
What is a multi-hyphenate anyway? We're exploring how this buzz word jumped ship from Hollywood to apply to today's multi-passionate entrepreneurs. Join cohosts Austin, Mallory and Katherine who share their wandering career stories, including what led them to start their own businesses, head into the nonprofit world, and how they pivoted when career paths hit a dead end. Whether you're a sometimes yoga instructor, barista, Lyft driver or child care provider, we explore how multi-hyphenates have become the norm thanks in part to the rise gig economy and what it means to thrive (or not) in the modern workforce. Let's reclaim the term and find out how to work smarter, not harder. No seriously, how does it work?
