In this episode, I interview Jill Geysen whose bio says it all. Jillian Geysen's Bio: Jillian Geysen's journey from a small town in Connecticut, where she grew up in a lower-class family supported by her grandparents, is a testament to her resilience and determination. As the eldest of three sisters, she learned the value of hard work and perseverance from a young age. In the late summer of 2014, just over a year after graduating from Hofstra University in New York, where she studied and played Division 1 field hockey, Jillian faced a life-changing moment when she received a cancer diagnosis at the age of 22. While concurrently pursuing prerequisite courses for PA school in New Haven, CT, she worked at a restaurant and lived temporarily on a friend's basement couch to maintain some degree of independence from her parents. Enduring four months of chemotherapy (twice a week) that resulted in hair loss and a month-long radiation treatment concluding in February, Jillian faced significant medical expenses. Nevertheless, her determination never wavered. In March of 2015, Jillian embarked on a new chapter by relocating to Boston to work at Massachusetts General Hospital, aiming to fulfill pre-requisites for entry into a PA program. Over the course of five years in the healthcare industry, she gained insights from both clinical and administrative roles, ultimately realizing that it wasn't her true calling, scarred by her frequent personal visits to a multitude of healthcare centers. In early 2020, just before the COVID-19 pandemic, Jillian relocated to Tampa, driven by her commitment to her girlfriend, whom she met at Pensacola Pride in 2019. In June 2020, she took a position in exterior home remodeling sales, meticulously saving every penny and making astute financial investments. By October 2023, Jillian had made the bold decision to quit her job, now comfortably sustaining herself through her well-managed investments. Her journey is a story of perseverance, adaptability, and a commitment to shaping her own path in life, living authentically as a proud lesbian. If you'd like to learn more about Jillian, feel free to reach out, as she's always open to sharing her experiences and insights. In a lot of workplaces, compensation isn't transparent— and sometimes it's actively obscured. Leaders and managers work to implicitly and explicitly communicate that you shouldn't talk with your coworkers about money — arguing that it's demoralizing, or “private,” or unfair to share what you make with your coworkers. But that mindset only keeps compensation deeply inequitable. On today's episode, Maya Lau, host and creator of Other People's Pockets, joins Anne Helen Petersen to advise listeners on all things salary-related. When should you ask for a raise, and how? Are you want to make decisions based on emotions and not think it through? This takes me back to my mid-20s when I was working for a call center and I was encountering challenges. My boss would always tell me, “remember think with your head and not with your heart.” I always wondered why but now I know. If you are driven by emotion you might not be making the best decisions and that's where your heart leads to. But if you're driven by the logical and analytical thought process then you're more likely to make thought out decisions. When it comes to making moves regarding money it's always best to run the numbers. Remember numbers don't lie. If you want to know that decision you're about to make is the right one, it's all a matter of going through the numbers and finding that out for yourself. A lot of times we make decisions based on emotion, we're excited, we can see what the future can look like and therefore forget to run the numbers. When this happens there's feelings of let down, disappointment, and you start thinking you will never be able to get to your dreams and goals. That's not necessarily true. Running trough the numbers will set you up for success. That's only if you stay the course. This will help you get from point A to point B, with very little room for error. I encourage you to listen to this episode as it will help you position yourself for success in the future. Remember anything is possible as long as you set your mind to it and you're realistic about achieving those goals and dreams. As long as you run the numbers you should get to where you want go. Once a company goes public, all ownership of the company will be represented by stock.   What is a penny stock? Companies that have stocks that trade at $5.00 per share and below.   What is the stock market? The stock market is a place where you can go to buy and sell stock.   What are the DOW and the S&P 500 and what is the difference between the two? The DOW Jones is an index that tracks the health of the 30 largest public companies. The S&P 500 is also an index, but it tracks the health of the largest 500 public companies. They are only indexes. You cannot buy or sell stock with the DOW or the S&P 500. You can buy and sell stock using stocking exchanges. The two biggest exchanges are the New York Stock Exchange and the Nasdaq.   What is the difference between the Nasdaq and the New York Stock Exchange? There isn't much functional difference between the two. They are both stock exchanges but tech companies traditionally are listed on the Nasdaq and the New York Stock Exchange lists all other companies.   Is bitcoin a stock? Bitcoin is not a stock; it is a form of currency or payment.   If bitcoin is not a stock, how can you invest in bitcoin? The price/value of bitcoin fluctuates and because it goes up and down, people will exchange dollars into bitcoin with the hope that the value of bitcoin will increase to more than what you paid for it.   How do you pick a good stock? Step 1 Know the History : Look at how well (i.e. has increased in value 7-10%) a company has performed within the last 6-12 months. You don't want to invest in a company that hasn't been performing well over a long period of time (6-12months) Step 2 Do Your Research: Do some research on the company to determine how it makes money, how much money it's making and whether the company's money is growing. You can look at the public report the company provides on its website or check out the news section of a finance app or website to find information on a company. Some good finance websites to check out are CNBC or Yahoo Finance. Step 3 Make a Decision: If the company has a solid performance history and your research shows that the company will likely continue to perform well, consider purchasing it. If the company hasn't been performing well and/or your research suggests that it likely will continue to perform poorly, continue passing on that stock.

It is a plan that sets forth your intentions for how you wish to protect yourself, your stuff and your loved ones in the event that you die or become incapacitated.   Do I need an estate plan if I don't own real estate? Yes, you don't need to own any real estate in order to have an estate plan. When it comes to estate planning, an estate consists of all money, property or other assets that a person may own in life or at the time of their death.   Does my estate have to be valued at a certain dollar amount to need an estate plan? No, there is no minimum asset or dollar amount threshold for having an estate plan. Even if you don't own anything, you should still have an estate plan to determine what happens to you in the event you become incapacitated.   What documents do you need to include in your estate plan for the purposes of incapacity planning? Healthcare Power of Attorney HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) Release Advanced Healthcare Directive (aka living will)  General Power of Attorney  What documents do you need to include in your estate plan to dispose of your assets when you die? Will—a written instrument that provides instructions on how to divide your assets upon your death.  Trust –a legal agreement that allows a third party, a trustee, to hold and direct assets on behalf of a beneficiary.  If I have limited resources or funds, what documents are most important for me to have drafted first? If you can afford to at least sit down with an attorney, you should first invest in a consultation with a lawyer in your state who can provide you with state-specific advice based on your individual situation. If you can't afford to sit down with an attorney: Start documenting and organizing all of your assets.  Designate beneficiaries on all of your accounts (bank, investment, retirement…etc).   ADVERTISEMENTS: Shop with The Sugar Free Podcast advertisers: Building Bread—Want to start investing in the stock market? That's why, for S2 Ep7 Making Money Moves Part II: How to Create a Financial Plan that works, we are sitting down with financial planner and professional securer of bags, Ms. Tremaine Wills.   Tremaine is the is the owner of Mind Over Money, LLC, a registered investment advisory firm, where she focuses on helping ambitious black women create and execute financial plans. She is also owner of Mind Over Money Education, a financial literacy resource hub that creates financial literacy content for the culture. A financial plan is a roadmap for your finances that brings your dreams to life.    How do I develop a financial plan? Set goals. Make sure you set clear, plain and attainable goals for your money.    What are some good goals to have for your money if you don't have any? Determine how much money you need to have in the bank to make you feel comfortable and let that number be your first goal. Identify what's important to you and put those things in your spending plan. Determine ways that you can generate more income   What elements comprise a comprehensive financial plan? A budget for day-to-day expenses Annual Budget Debt repayment plan Education Financing Plan Retirement Financing Plan Estate plan (including insurance) Tax Strategy   What is a good strategy for debt repayment? Avoid incurring large amounts of debt that don't provide a return.  Don't rush to pay down low interest debt because you can use that money to invest in higher yielding interest accounts. Prioritize paying off higher interest debt like credit card debt (any debt with greater than 6% interest).   Best advice for creating a solid financial plan? Consolidate and Get Organized. If you have a ton of bank accounts, credit cards, bills…etc. eliminate the accounts that do not serve a purpose. T Have the Right Resources in place For banking, check out Ally because it has no overdraft fees and provides high yield savings accounts. For credit cards, go to your current bank first. Credit unions tend to provide better rates and are more lenient in their lending requirements.  For help with budgeting, check out the “You Need a Budget” and “Mint” apps to help you get your finances in order. Know When to Ask for Help. If you're not good with managing money, consider consulting with a financial adviser who can help you get a plan together.   ADVERTISEMENTS: Shop with The Sugar Free Podcast advertisers: Building Bread—Want to start investing in the stock market? Are you tired of giving away your hard-earned money to Uncle Sam? Are you tired of tax professionals telling you to “start an LLC” to save on taxes? Are you in search of some tax savings advice that's applicable for your station in life? Me too! Starting a business, having children and/or getting married aren't the ONLY ways to leverage the tax code for your benefit.   We just need a seasoned tax professional to give us the blueprint on how to save on our taxes as single, childless, business-less renters. I know, I know sounds like a tall order but that's exactly what we are going to discuss in this week's episode, Making Money Moves Part I: Income Tax Strategies for Regular People featuring tax strategist, CPA and owner of The Savvy Accountant, Ms. Atiya Brown.     Atiya, aka The Savvy Accountant, is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA),  a Certified Financial Education Instructor and owner of The Savvy Accountant. She is dually licensed in both Canada and the USA as a CPA and has over 16 years' experience in the accounting/finance world.     Want to work with Atiya? Purchase her  Accounting Toolkit. Taxes are the revenue that the government collects in order to fund public goods and services like government operations, public schools and city infrastructure.   What are income taxes? The tax that's imposed against the earned money that you make.   How are income taxes calculated? Income taxes are calculated by adding together all sources of income (W-2 Wages, Rental Income, Wages you pay yourself from your business…etc.) and then applying or subtracting all deductions against all earned income.   How do you reduce your taxable income? You can reduce your taxable income through deductions or credits. Deductions are amounts that you can reduce your taxable income by to reduce your overall tax liability (i.e. the total amount you owe to the government in taxes). You can either apply the standardized deduction or the itemized deduction Standard deduction is $12,950 applied to all individual taxpayers who have less than $12,950 in itemized deduction Itemized Deductions are individual deductions that can be applied against earned income and can include the following types of deductions Property taxes ◦ State taxes ◦ Mortgage Interest Charitable Donations ◦ Medical Expenses (up to a certain percentage) Marginalized Deductions serve to reduce your earned income to decrease your overall tax liability. For example, if you earn $100 in income for the year and have $80 in itemized deductions, your taxable income will become $20. If your applicable tax rate is ten percent (10%), you multiply the ten percent by your taxable income of $20 to get your tax liability which will be $2 Tax Credits serve as another tool to reduce your tax liability by reducing your net tax liability directly, dollar for dollar. For example, if your net tax liability is $2 as in the example above, and you have a $1 tax credit, your new tax liability will be $1. Tax credits are very difficult to come by.    Tax rates are the rates at which your income will be taxed and ranges from 10%-37%.   Pandemic Updates to the Tax Code:  Charitable Donations—This year you can apply up to $600 in charitable donation deductions to your overall deductions even if you take the standard deductions  Stimulus Check Payments – Stimulus check payments will be applied as a tax credit to your 2021 tax return   What are some strategies you can implement to reduce your tax liability? Leveraging retirement accounts Put money into a Health Savings Account (HAS)  If you have a hobby or set of specialized skills that you can monetize, consider starting a business.   When is it time to seek help with your taxes? When your tax situation has undergone significant change (i.e. you've purchased a home, had a child, gotten married…etc.), consider consulting a tax professional to ensure that you are properly accounting your potential change in tax liability When the tax code changes   Check us out and subscribe to us on YouTube: YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC0cHoUmESN8CF3uGZ7IyeDA Website: www.sugarfreepodcast.com
