This week we dig into the daily struggle of being a multi-hyphenate, which can be both liberating and totally overwhelming. Co-hosts Katherine, Austin and Mallory explore the feeling that at any moment you can reinvent yourself through new knowledge and skills (this is the first day of the rest of your life…). At the same time, juggling multiple roles and passion projects is a constant need to know more/learn more/stay at the cutting edge of multiple fields. Not sure what a trap versus a trick means? Neither did Austin or Katherine, but the whole crew dove into what this push and pull can look like for today's overworked, over-scheduled and overexcitable multi-hyphenates. This episode is NOT about what you think when you hear “politics.” It's not about views, or sides, or candidates. This is politics through the lens of what you've come to expect and love from me and Self-Made Mastery, which is learning how to take control of one more aspect of your life in a way that is exciting and empowering. We're looking at how enthusiastic and consistent participation in our electoral system (here, in the United States) is going to affect us mentally, and what strategies and mindsets we can adopt in order to both stay engaged politically and also protect our mental health. Then we are going to shift away from how voting affects us personally and look at how voting actually does have an impact on our political system, even though we may sometimes feel like it doesn't matter. Air Date 10/21/2020 Today we take a look at some of the many zany foreign misadventures the United States has had over the past 100 years. And by "zany misadventures" I mean the naked pursuit of capitalism at any cost, the support of military coups and other undemocratic overthrows of foreign governments and wars for oil and resources in an unabashed attempt to keep America wealthy and the rest of the world less so - all while maintaining an anti-imperial, pro-democracy, pro-freedom, live-and-let-live poker face. Today is Indigenous Peoples' Day, and today is a good day to talk about how we can protect and uplift our communities. One way we can do that is by voting. That is a complicated suggestion for Native America, and on this episode, we discuss why. Vote to make Indigenous voices heard. Vote because informed voting is activism. Vote for our ancestors that died for the right to do it. Vote because even though this isn’t our system, it is the system we live within. Vote for land back. Vote for Missing and Murdered Women. Vote to protect our right to choose. Vote for our bodies. Vote for critical race theory. Vote for family. Vote to take down the wall. Vote because we live in a settler colonial state, but it’s still Turtle Island.++++Special Thanks to @maxlevin for the music on this episode. Huge thanks to @teoelisio. Amazing artwork by @ciarasana. The upcoming election in the United States is the most important of our lifetimes. I thought it would be interesting to have a conversation on this topic, but through a slightly different lens than you might be used to in these polarizing times, and I hope this conversation is thoughtful in that respect. Rev. Yolanda is a singer/songwriter/trans-femme genderqueer performance artist and interfaith minister, originally from Muscle Shoals, Alabama -- the hit recording capital of the world. Rev. Yolanda has been honored with induction into the GLBT Hall of Fame, the Blues Hall of Fame, and also with two MAC Awards from the Manhattan Association of Cabarets and Clubs. A brand new recording, YolandaNanda, is based on her love for mantras of the Buddhist, Hindu, and Sikh traditions. She shares her story of journeying from a Christian background to growing to understand her sexuality and gender to life and spirituality through The Radical Faeries and an interfaith seminary to the music ministry she has today. Don't miss her excellent anecdotes and memorable music! The Episode starts off with 3 Random Facts: Wendy Sheridan teaches us that octopi can change in more ways than most of us may have heard, Mary McGinley tells us about a company's attempt to make broccoli more appealing to kids (epic fail), and Robin Renée speaks of mysterious appearances by a flute-playing André 3000. The News turns to the heart-wrenching loss of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the new Bob Woodward book, Rage, cannabis legalization on the ballot, and a "UFO" over New Jersey. At the end of the show, Wendy, Mary, and Robin enter The Blanket Fort to process grief, think about creativity during the COVID-19 pandemic, and to offer congrats to recently newlywed friends and family. On this week's episode, Cindy and Adam discuss guilty pleasures. They touch on the various reasons why some people are so reluctant to reveal their guilty pleasures and why they regard them as guilty in the first place. They also take the time to reveal some of their own personal ones; even some that they as a married couple didn't know about each other. They then take to the InstaGram polls they conducted regarding some of the more common guilty pleasures (boy bands, reality television, etc.). Here are the links we mentioned: Step 1: Go to www.vote.org to check/update your own registration status, request an absentee ballot, find polling places, and become a poll worker. Get all of your options for voting and deadlines for your state. Step 2: Visit www.VoteSaveAmerica.com to Adopt a State and make phone calls/send texts to voters in swing states. In a lot of these states, the margins in 2016 were razor thin, and likely will be again. This program reaches out to undecided, first-time, and infrequent voters to make sure they have the information and motivation to vote in this election. Step 3: Volunteer to write letters to voters through www.SwingLeft.org or www.VoteFwd.org. Your only cost is postage and envelopes. Help engage other voters AND support the USPS!

With this episode, I talk about how the election will most likely come down to what a few "battleground" states' voters, and therefore their electors, do on November 3rd. Just because you don't live there (or better yet, if you do), you can have a huge impact on helping these voters make their decision and getting them to the polls on Election Day. All from the comfort of your own home. Adopt a state. Save America. How it works: you can directly support the work of organizers, volunteers, and candidates in the six key battleground states that will be most important to delivering a progressive majority in 2020. Just pick a state at https://votesaveamerica.com/states/, sign up, and they'll get you everything you need to make a big difference this November. Comment down below with any questions or thoughts that you may have. Hit me up on social media @PhilSvitek if it's easier. I'd love to hear from you. For some of us, voting season is like the best of the holidays. Elections are full of possibility. They are full of promise. They are full of hope. While we are in a dark time nationally right now, in this mini-episode Oly Talks addresses why voting is crucial, what is great about it, and where you can get the information you need to be an informed voter. In Washington you can register in person until the end of the day on October 29 (at your county courthouse), and your ballot needs to be in by November 6. Voting is how we show who we are as a nation. This is our chance to speak up. Celebrate that with us!
