Sponsorships and tickets for the AI Engineer Summit are selling fast! See the new website with speakers and schedules live! If you are building AI agents or leading teams of AI Engineers, this will be the single highest-signal conference of the year for you, this Feb 20-22nd in NYC.We're pleased to share that Karina will be presenting OpenAI's closing keynote at the AI Engineer Summit. We were fortunate to get some time with her today to introduce some of her work, and hope this serves as nice background for her talk! There are very few early AI careers that have been as impactful as Karina Nguyen's. After stints at Notion, Square, Dropbox, Primer, the New York Times, and UC Berkeley, She joined Anthropic as employee ~60 and worked on a wide range of research/product roles for Claude 1, 2, and 3. We'll just let her LinkedIn speak for itself:Now, as Research manager and Post-training lead in Model Behavior at OpenAI, she creates new interaction paradigms for reasoning interfaces and capabilities, like ChatGPT Canvas, Tasks, SimpleQA, streaming chain-of-thought for o1 models, and more via novel synthetic model training. Ideal AI Research+Product ProcessIn the podcast we got a sense of what Karina has found works for her and her team to be as productive as they have been:* Write PRD (Define what you want)* Funding (Get resources)* Prototype Prompted Baseline (See what's possible)* Write and Run Evals (Get failures to hillclimb)* Model training (Exceed baseline without overfitting)* Bugbash (Find bugs and solve them)* Ship (Get users!)We could turn this into a snazzy viral graphic but really this is all it is. Simple to say, difficult to do well. Hopefully it helps you define your process if you do similar product-research work. The model knows when to open a canvas, make targeted edits, and fully rewrite. It also understands broader context to provide precise feedback and suggestions. To support this, our research team developed the following core behaviors:* Triggering the canvas for writing and coding* Generating diverse content types* Making targeted edits* Rewriting documents* Providing inline critiqueWe measured progress with over 20 automated internal evaluations. We used novel synthetic data generation techniques, such as distilling outputs from OpenAI o1-preview, to post-train the model for its core behaviors. This approach allowed us to rapidly address writing quality and new user interactions, all without relying on human-generated data.* Tasks: https://www.theverge.com/2025/1/14/24343528/openai-chatgpt-repeating-tasks-agent-ai* * Agents and Operator* What are agents? “Agents are a gradual progression of tasks: starting with one-off actions, moving to collaboration, and ultimately fully trustworthy long-horizon delegation in complex envs like multi-player/multiagents.” (tweet)* tasks and canvas fall within the first two, and we are def. marching towards the third—though the form factor for 3 will take time to develop * Operator/Computer Use Agents* https://openai.com/index/introducing-operator/* Misc:* Andrew Ng* Prediction: Personal AI Consumer playbook* ChatGPT as generative OSTimestamps* 00:00 Welcome to the Latent Space Podcast* 00:11 Introducing Karina Nguyen* 02:21 Karina's Journey to OpenAI* 04:45 Early Prototypes and Projects* 05:25 Joining Anthropic and Early Work* 07:16 Challenges and Innovations at Anthropic* 11:30 Launching Claude 3* 21:57 Behavioral Design and Model Personality* 27:37 The Making of ChatGPT Canvas* 34:34 Canvas Update and Initial Impressions* 34:46 Differences Between Canvas and API Outputs* 35:50 Core Use Cases of Canvas* 36:35 Canvas as a Writing Partner* 36:55 Canvas vs. Google Docs and Future Improvements* 37:35 Canvas for Coding and Executing Code* 38:50 Challenges in Developing Canvas* 41:45 Introduction to Tasks* 41:53 Developing and Iterating on Tasks* 46:27 Future Vision for Tasks and Proactive Models* 52:23 Computer Use Agents and Their Potential* 01:00:21 Cultural Differences Between OpenAI and Anthropic* 01:03:46 Call to Action and Final Thoughts Get full access to Latent Space at www.latent.space/subscribe

Join 6AMRun.com Ambassador and Host, Marc Paisant, as we welcome Model, Mental Health Advocate, Trainer, and Athlete, Jonathan Niziol. Jonathan's journey began on a tranquil Canadian farm, but it took a heart-wrenching turn when his mother passed away just before his 21st birthday. Despite facing years of addiction and personal demons, a wake-up call at the age of 25 ignited a transformative fire within him. This drove him to rebuild his body and mind while navigating the profound loss of his mother. In tribute to his mother's legacy, Jonathan ventured into the world of modeling, confronting his inner demons. The pursuit of perfection led to body image issues and a challenging relationship with food. Amidst these struggles, he faced the nightmare of sexual assault and the heartbreaking loss of close friends to suicide and car accidents. Depression and anxiety added to the weight of his burdens, pushing him down a path of drug addiction. However, in 2017, Jonathan took a courageous step by embracing therapy, ultimately breaking free from the grip of addiction that had held him for 15 long years. We all deserve that at any age! Finding appropriate dresses that are still fun and exciting for teen girls to wear are so hard to come by these days. Even if you only have sons, you have to be aware of the messaging and expectations being served to young girls. It takes a really long time for women to get to a place where they stop dressing or changing their bodies for others and start exclusively living for themselves, unapologetically. What happens when we can't reproduce our work- or someone else's? What does it mean about the science- and ourselves?Today on the podcast, we're talking to Nicole C. Nelson, an associate professor in the Department of Medical History and Bioethics at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and an affiliate of the Holtz Center of Sciences and Technology Studies. Her work has been applied to clinical practice in oncology, working with researchers as they applied novel genomic technologies to chemotherapy resistant cancers. She's currently studying the scientific reproducibility crisis. Here's a link to one of the studies on graduate students and their responses to irreproducibility that she describes in our conversation. Do you feel stuck? Are you struggling to know and walk out your purpose? Maybe you can't even see the next steps in your life? Today's guest, Amy Joob, shares her personal story of overcoming barriers to shift into new callings and fulfill her God-given purpose. Amy Joob is an award-winning author, speaker, and model turned advocate. We discuss how the seasons of uncertainty and failure can become opportunities to discover a new, God-given direction. Amy shares her journey of life-changing moments when injury nudged her from competing as a tri-athlete into modeling, yet later faced recent shutdowns in her industries in modeling and trade shows. She then describes dental pain occurring during God's call to speaking and writing. Joob quotes her father-in-law, who told her, "If you fail, it's on God because he told you to do it." We discuss the need to depend upon God's strength to follow his calling. Amy shares how she needed to let go of perfectionism and self-reliance in order to fulfill her God-given purpose. Amy and I explore the difference between the world's concept of success and God's definition of fulfilling our calling. We point to Biblical figures who exemplify serving their divine purpose, like David, Paul, and Moses. Amy emphasizes seeking the next right step rather than expecting to continue on one path of singular purpose throughout life. She describes seasons, noting her own time of caring for her son when he faced a serious medical diagnosis. Among the steps to move into fulfilling divine calling and purpose, Joob lists prayer, fellowship, holding onto hope in seasons of waiting or caregiving, obedient movement forward, letting go of perfectionism and shame, and forgiveness. We discuss how God doesn't always reveal a long-term vision. Amy recommends fasting and prayer for key strategies to help discern God's will. We also discuss putting God first and seeking his direction at the onset of each day. We also discuss the blessing we can offer by inviting others to help us through delegating. Degrassi is a Canadian teen drama known for serving authentic and boundary-pushing realness and for giving the world Drake (yes, that Drake). TV's longest running TV series also gave us the incredible Christina Schmidt — an actress, turned body-positive model, turned influencer for fashion, wellness, & lifestyle. Schmidtt nearly broke the internet with her appearance in Drake's "I'm Upset" Degrassi reunion video. But, she isn't defined by her early success, far from it. We are joined by the Canadian model/actress/influencer to talk behind-the-scenes tea of model life, being an influencer during quarantine, and how our co-host Austin Mark slipped into her DM's, resulting in a lasting friendship. To get where you are going you should follow a GPS (in the old days, we'd follow a map). When looking to achieve your goals there is a map as well. That map is the behavior of others. Who else has done what you want to do?How did they do it?Seek out others who have been successful and interview them. Get as much information as you can to benefit from their experience.Do secondary research: Read everything you can. Take courses and watch videos. Emulate the behavior (the actions) of those who are successful. Avoid the mistakes they've made. Follow their guide.
In this episode, we reconnect with Mary Jackson and her family, who take to applying her engineering talents outside of work.
