Season 4 is officially underway, and we're kicking things off with a guest who has poured her entire heart into Richmond's brunch scene. This week, we sit down with the one and only Sarabeth — aka SB — the owner and creative force behind SB's Lakeside Loveshack. From unicorn pancakes and glitter-covered coffee drinks to handwritten menus, fairy hair nights, and a whole lot of community love, SB has built more than a restaurant — she's built a true RVA institution. In this episode, SB opens up about growing up between New York and Virginia Beach, working since she was 11 years old, becoming a single mom, and teaching herself how to cook on a line while opening her dream restaurant with only $5K, food stamps, and pure determination. We talk about restaurant chaos, brunch culture, confidence, mental health, building community, and why “Love Shack” became the perfect name for the colorful little spot that now feels like home to so many Richmonders. We also dive into:The story behind SB's iconic menu names inspired by the B-52sWhy brunch is an experience, not just a mealThe realities of surviving COVID as a restaurant ownerRichmond's food scene and some of SB's favorite local spotsFairy hair, drag bingo, Pride collabs, and Halloween in the HubRaising her son while building a business from the ground upWhy confidence and authenticity are true superpowersPlus:Big Daddy drops it on us with a deep dive into the raw milk trend and whether the “unpasteurized movement” is worth the riskUpcoming RVA events including Dominion Energy Riverrock, Hello Summer Festival, line dancing at River City Roll, and moreBusiness of the Week: K-Bop at Väsen Brewing CompanyLOTS of Richmond restaurant love and local shoutoutsThis episode is funny, heartfelt, chaotic in the best way, and full of reminders to lead with kindness, authenticity, and love. It was two and a half years ago, but I can still taste it—that mix of confusion, grief, fear, and exasperation from the job hunt after a layoff.I kept hearing the same things:“You're overqualified.”“You don't quite fit this role.”“Your resume doesn't really make sense.”Externally, I wanted to push back. But internally, I ingested a more dangerous thought: Maybe I don't make sense. After months of searching, I wasn't just frustrated. I was starting to question whether I had ever even had the value I thought I did.And I don't think this is just my story. We are living in a deeply strange moment in the world of work. And understatement, I know.We have more ways than ever to describe ourselves, and somehow, we're becoming harder to see. The systems we're operating in were never designed to hold the full complexity of a human being. So they flatten us. They reward what can be easily categorized. And they pass over what can't fit neatly into boxes. Over time, that oversimplification shapes who gets seen, who gets valued, and who gets to access power.Today's guest has been working on this exact problem for years. Dr. Sarabeth Berk Bickerton is a professional identity researcher and the leading expert on what she calls hybrid professionals—people whose careers don't fit neatly into a single box.In this conversation, we explore a radical and deeply hopeful idea: That your power doesn't come from fitting into the system. It comes from naming yourself. We talk about professional identity, belonging, the hidden cost of trying to “fit,” and what it means to be seen, known, and valued in a world that keeps trying to simplify you.Listen to the full episode to hear:How her personal pain point with feeling stuck in a box evolved into over a decade of research and a unique way of solving the problemWhy naming our unique professional identity is essential for owning your power and standing out against AIWhy we need to get clear on the language for the intersection of our skills, abilities, talentsThe three levels of belonging and how they impact how we feel seen and valued at workUnderstanding the three core identities and how they help us name who we are and how we can excel at workWhy it's essential to have a real, embodied connection with the words you choose to describe your professional identityLearn more about Dr. Sarabeth Berk Bickerton:More Than My TitleConnect on LinkedInInstagram: @morethanmytitleSubstack: @sarabethberkbickertonLearn more about Valerie Black:The Change AgencyBecoming Power NewsletterCoachingResources:More Than My Title: The Power of Hybrid Professionals in a Workforce of Experts and GeneralistsSeen, Known, Valued: How to Achieve Career Belonging in a Workforce Obsessed with Fit

In this episode we're talking to Sara-Beth Reuter about her inspiring journey to home birth. Sara-Beth is a great example of courage and determination. After her doctor told her that she would not be able to deliver naturally and would need a c-section because of the size of her baby, she and her husband Matthew decided to get another opinion on the matter. They reached out to Matthew's grandmother, an experienced midwife, and explored their options. Already not too keen on hospitals and clear that she wanted a natural birth, at 19 years old and 31 weeks pregnant, Sara-Beth switched over to the midwifery model of care and planned for a home birth with the help of Matthew's grandmother. Sara-Beth has a solid sense of confidence in her body's ability to do what it's meant to do, and it comes across when she talks about the rest of her pregnancy and her birth. Sarah-Beth believes that “labor is not a sickness,” and is all about putting empowering information out there to support women in having a home birth if that's what they want for themselves and their families. We're so grateful to her for sharing her time with us, especially with 2-month old baby Silas in the picture. We understand how valuable time is for a new mama! For the entire month of May, in honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, Joanna is bringing you a special parent series, where she interviews parents whose children have overcome a variety of mental health challenges. When the oldest of four children is struggling with their mental health, it can cause tremendous disruption in the home, especially for younger siblings. That was the case in the home of Sara Beth and her family when her oldest son's struggles from childhood came forth with vengeance in the teen years. What started as a moderately disruptive tourettes diagnosis at age six, evolved into rage, destruction of property and difficulty in school. Desperate to help her son, Sara Beth left no stone unturned. On today's episode of Success is Subjective, she openly shares the challenges their family has faced, along with her greatest resources that have brought them hope and healing.
