EPISODE DESCRIPTIONIn the winter of 1671, 20 years before the trials at Salem, a 16-year-old servant girl in the frontier town of Groton, Massachusetts, fell into violent fits, accused two neighbors of witchcraft, confessed to signing her name in the devil's book, and then took most of it back. Her employer, a 31-year-old minister named Samuel Willard, wrote it all down as it happened, day by day, suspecting a fraud the whole time. Then a voice spoke out of her while her lips never moved. Mary Ann Poll tells the story of Elizabeth Knapp, the minister who refused to decide what he had seen, and how his refusal saved lives.EPISODE NOTES● Built almost entirely from a single primary source: Samuel Willard's own manuscript account, kept among Cotton Mather's papers. Willard never published it under his name, and it remains the only firsthand record of the case.● The episode's central image, and the source of the subtitle, is Willard's test on December 17, 1671: when a low, rough voice spoke out of Elizabeth, he brought a light to her face, watched for the letters that require the lips (B, M, and P), and recorded that the voice used them freely while her lips never moved and her tongue stayed against the roof of her mouth.● Documented phenomena covered: fits that took three to six people to hold; her tongue drawn up so hard it could not be pried loose; barking and bleating; a black dog with eyes in its back; a mark in the chimney clay where she said a witch went up; the voice calling Willard a rogue, claiming to be stronger than God, and returning during prayer to crow like a rooster.● Elizabeth accused two neighbor women, and a touch test on the first came back positive. Groton did not act on it. Both women were cleared and never accused again. Twenty years later at Salem, the same kind of evidence hanged 19 people. Willard, by then a prominent Boston minister, argued that the devil could wear an innocent person's face, and was himself named by an accuser during the trials.● Willard checked Elizabeth's confession against his own memory: the wood chips that appeared by the hearth, the strange look on the stairs when she said the devil had sent her to kill him with a billhook. A newly surfaced June 15, 2009 letter from then-acting U.S. Attorney Jeffrey Sloman showed that Jeffrey Epstein had repeatedly violated the terms of his extraordinarily favorable 2007 non-prosecution agreement, yet federal prosecutors in South Florida never exercised their explicit authority to tear up the deal and prosecute him. Sloman told Epstein's attorneys that there had been “several instances” in which Epstein breached both the letter and spirit of the agreement, with prosecutors ultimately issuing five warnings over roughly two years. The violations included Epstein's failure to make his promised state guilty plea within the agreed timetable, his lawyers submitting a proposed state plea agreement containing language that conflicted with the federal deal, interference with prosecutors' efforts to notify victims, delays in securing legal representation for victims, efforts to resist a subpoena for computer equipment that could help identify additional victims, and false or threatening representations concerning his eligibility for work release. The precise basis for the fifth warning was not spelled out in the letter. Sloman complained that whenever prosecutors confronted Epstein, his lawyers would claim that Epstein had merely relied on their advice, provide a superficial fix and then continue benefiting from the agreement until another violation occurred.What made the revelations especially significant was that Epstein's non-prosecution agreement explicitly stated that the breach of even one condition gave the United States the option to terminate the deal and investigate and prosecute Epstein and others for federal crimes. Despite documenting repeated violations, prosecutors did not do that. Sloman acknowledged in the letter that Epstein continued receiving the central benefit of the bargain, freedom from federal prosecution, while the government was not receiving the finality, conservation of resources, punishment and victim restitution that the agreement was supposed to produce. Asked in 2026 why the government had done little more than issue warnings, Sloman said he could not remember the specific reasoning, although he maintained that prosecutors had ultimately treated the matter as a state case and called approval of the deal a “bad call” rather than something nefarious. Fourteen telehealth sessions. Two hundred hospital visits. Neither person who spent the most time with Lindsay Clancy before or after her three children died in their Duxbury home ever documented the thing her defense now says explains everything. Her psychiatrist testified Clancy never looked psychotic across all fourteen sessions. Her hospital chaplain, who has sat with her roughly two hundred times over three years at Tewksbury Hospital, testified that Clancy described a male voice ordering her to kill her children and then herself. Then the prosecutor asked for the chaplain's notes — and that voice wasn't in a single one of them. This is where the Lindsay Clancy trial actually turns. Massachusetts law puts the burden on prosecutors once an insanity defense is on the table: they have to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Clancy was criminally responsible when she killed her children with exercise bands. That means the state needs the jury to believe the chaplain missed the most consequential disclosure of her career, or that Clancy constructed the voice sometime after she survived her own fall. Phone records don't help settle it — Clancy had searched "symptoms of postpartum psychosis," mapped her husband's errand, and ordered the takeout that got him out of the house before it happened. The defense argues a medical system kept switching her medications without ever really listening. The prosecution argues the searches and the timing tell you everything you need to know about intent. Will Harvey got into real estate the way a lot of people do. He dropped out of college after a double hip surgery ended football, landed on a mortgage desk in 2015, and figured out fast how leverage worked. Judge Ralph Wilson Jr.'s nineteen-page order dismissing the murder charge against Aaron Spencer catalogued eleven specific failures by the lead detective and applied the most consequential legal characterization available: intentional conduct, bad faith, and a due process violation under both the federal and Arkansas state constitutions. The court specifically rejected the state's characterization of the evidence handling as negligent.The evidentiary chain at issue involves a dashcam and SD card recovered from Michael Fosler's truck — the sole potential objective record of the final encounter between Spencer and Fosler. Detective Robbie McCain removed the camera from the windshield without photographic documentation. He extracted the SD card and viewed it on his personal computer, in violation of departmental protocol — confirmed by his commanding officer — requiring that electronic evidence be submitted to the Attorney General's forensics unit without alteration. He stored the camera in an unsealed envelope in his office rather than the evidence room. The camera was not entered into evidence for over a year. No documentation accompanied any step of the process.The SD card was not present when the AG's special agent opened the submitted package. Twelve additional SD cards were recovered from Fosler's residence and vehicle during separate searches. None was identified as the dashcam card. No duplicate or record of the card's contents was ever created. The court found a "reasonable possibility" that the detective did not observe what he testified to having observed.The court identified the dashcam footage as the only potential neutral evidentiary record — given Spencer's Fifth Amendment protections and the potential impact of trauma on his daughter's testimonial capacity. Wilson also flagged a one-month discrepancy between the sheriff's office's claimed shipping date and the AG's confirmed receipt date. The state characterized this as administrative error. The court did not accept that characterization.Spencer killed Fosler after finding him with his thirteen-year-old daughter. Fosler faced 43 felony charges involving the child and was released on bond with a no-contact order in effect. The day following the dismissal, Sheriff John Staley — the thirteen-year incumbent whom Spencer defeated in the Republican primary — terminated Detective McCain, citing policy violations. Know what you're actually building. A midyear review should go beyond sales numbers and goals. It's important to understand whether you're creating a business that can operate independently or whether the business relies entirely on YOU physically being in the shop to do all of the things. 2. If you are not profitable, if your cash flow is struggling, if you have no idea where your money is going; revenue doesn't mean much at all.  3. Systems create freedom. Many retailers wait until they are tired, ready to retire, or facing unexpected life circumstances before thinking about selling their business.
