The Space Show Presents Author & James Van Laak re his book “To See Far - Conflict and Cooperation on the Space Frontier” from Tuesday, April 14, 2026Quick Summary:This was a West Coast Space Show program hosted by David Livingston featuring author Jim Van Laak, who discussed his book “To See Far: Conflict and Cooperation on the Space Frontier.” Jim shared his experiences working on the International Space Station partnership with Russia during the 1990s, emphasizing the challenges of overcoming Cold War tensions and establishing cooperation between former adversaries. The discussion covered NASA's current challenges, particularly regarding the Artemis program and SpaceX's Starship development, with Jim expressing concerns about NASA's lack of complete systems understanding due to the commercial service contract approach. The conversation also touched on broader societal issues, with Jim presenting a proposal about addressing global challenges through systems thinking and suggesting humanity may face significant challenges within 50 years.Detailed SummaryOur Space Show team discussed James's current role as a senior engineering consultant on the Artemis program, where he expressed concerns about schedule pressure and safety risks. We went on to the introductions where James discussed his book about conflict and cooperation on the space frontier, particularly focusing on his work with the former USSR on the ISS program.James shared his background as a Vietnam War veteran and pilot who later became one of the original seven leaders of the International Space Station (ISS) program in 1993. He discussed the challenges and tensions involved in establishing the cooperative program with Russia, highlighting how the partnership evolved from a survival instinct into genuine respect. When asked about the upcoming de-orbiting of the ISS, James acknowledged the sadness of its retirement but explained that the orbital debris risks make it impractical to keep it operational or reposition it as a museum. David expressed concerns about commercial space stations not matching the safety and redundancy of the ISS.Jim discussed his extensive background in aviation and emphasized the importance of humility in leading the space business, noting that many entrepreneurs lack this characteristic. He shared insights from the Soviet Union era, highlighting the challenges of working with difficult partners and the necessity of cooperation for the success of the space station program. He explained that the partnership with Russia was learned through practical experience rather than formal guidance, and he noted that technical collaboration required learning on the job without diplomatic involvement. Our guest shared his experience working on the Space Station program, particularly highlighting a meaningful meeting with a Russian chief engineer in 1993 where treating the colleague with respect led to a productive collaboration. He explained that while early interactions with Russian colleagues presented challenges, the program eventually developed a collaborative culture that has become normalized across both organizations. Marshall commented on the common challenge in software engineering of developing good solutions but facing difficulty in getting them accepted by others, which James acknowledged as a familiar issue in the space program.Jim talked about his experience working on the Space Station Freedom project, where he identified significant reliability issues with the attitude control system. He found that the probability of the system functioning across a 15-month period was only 35%, with a 65% probability of failure. This concern gained attention during the 1993 redesign when Bill Shepard became the transition program manager, leading to James being brought onto the ISS team to address these issues. James also shared his background in aviation, including a personal experience with an aircraft fire at age 19, which motivated him to understand the causes of machinery failure and human decision-making errors. His experience with NASA over nearly 40 years focused on sharing insights from his book “My Wife's Creation” about the importance of space exploration. He expressed disappointment with NASA's current Artemis program, particularly criticizing the lack of historical knowledge and the decision to have humans first experience the Starship during the moon landing mission without proper flight testing protocols. James noted that while some NASA personnel excel at seeing far and considering the larger picture, others tend to be one-trick ponies focused on specific solutions without broader perspective.James discussed the challenges in NASA's decision-making process, arguing that poor leadership over the past 15 years has led to suboptimal solutions due to a lack of global perspective and systems understanding. He highlighted the issue of handling flammability in the cabin atmosphere as an example of how experts in different fields struggle to coordinate their efforts effectively. James emphasized the need for a systems engineer who can understand the interconnections between technical and human dimensions, rather than having experts who focus only on their specific areas of expertise. The group discussed leadership and management styles, particularly focusing on Elon Musk's role at SpaceX and James's experience leading a team of several thousand people during the space station era. James shared insights about his role as a coach and team captain, emphasizing how technical decisions were made collaboratively but ultimately required his final authority. The conversation concluded with David highlighting current external constraints on NASA, including congressional oversight and proposed budget cuts to the science budget, which he noted work against the vision of space exploration for all.Our guest talked about how NASA could better manage constraints and Congress's role in space programs. He explained that effective NASA leadership is crucial in articulating technical requirements to Congress, who ultimately relies on NASA experts for guidance. The conversation then shifted to analyzing Starship's compliance with the rocket equation, where James argued that using Starship for lunar missions would involve unnecessary complexity and risk due to its mass ratio requirements. John added that using Starship as a lunar lander may have been more of a political decision than a technical one, and James concluded by highlighting the importance of reliability in spacecraft design, referencing Apollo's simple ascent engine as an example of effective engineering.James expressed concerns about NASA's limited understanding of SpaceX's Starship system due to proprietary information restrictions in the commercial service agreement. He highlighted that NASA's current level of access and technical mastery is significantly lower compared to previous generations of vehicles, raising questions about the reliability and performance claims. James emphasized that while he supports SpaceX's efforts, the decision to rely on commercial contractors represents an untested approach in this domain, making the outcome uncertain. The group discussed space technology and engineering approaches, with James sharing his perspective on traditional systems engineering versus newer approaches like SpaceX's Starship. James agreed to write a review for the Evidence Ledger regarding Starship claims. The conversation shifted to broader societal questions about space exploration's purpose and value, with James expressing doubt about human society surviving 50 years due to current trends in technology and behavior. The conversation ended with plans for an upcoming radio appearance where Philip and Joe would be guests discussing Artemis and lessons learned.Special thanks to our sponsors:American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Helix Space in Luxembourg, Celestis Memorial Spaceflights, Astrox Corporation, Dr. Haym Benaroya of Rutgers University, The Space Settlement Progress Blog by John Jossy, The Atlantis Project, and Artless EntertainmentOur Toll Free Line for Live Broadcasts: 1-866-687-7223 (Not in service at this time)For real time program participation, email Dr. Space at: drspace@thespaceshow.com for instructions and access. The Space Show is a non-profit 501C3 through its parent, One Giant Leap Foundation, Inc. Talking with James Van Lanen, anthropologist, re-wilding advocate, and author of Human Rewilding in the 21st Century, mapping the intersections of species-level fitness, ecological embeddedness, and the long arc of civilizational collapse…On species-level fitness versus civilizational fitness, on Herbert Spencer and the colonial roots of survival of the fittest, on aggrandizing agents and the alpha-hoarding pattern, on the Radical Anthropology Group and the female coalition theory of human speciation, on Pierre Clastres and secondary primitivism, the people who ran back into the jungle, on five hundred years of Amazonian oral history as the most successful anti-civilizational politic in human history, on the Hadza and the smartphone controversy, on his rebuttal to Graeber and Wengrow's The Dawn of Everything, on Joseph Tainter and continually diminishing returns, on the gathering that would fall apart at thirty days, on nodal community versus rigid communes, on finding your gifts rather than peddling hope, on daughters and the stone knives,Thirteen years traveling by small aircraft to remote Alaskan communities, fieldwork across four continents, Siberia, the Amazon, Africa, and now independent, outside the bureaucracy of both the academy and the state. His work challenges both the right-wing bunker prepper and the techno-progressive urban left, arguing instead for rural dropout-ism: not ideology, but as a true measure of human fitness.ExcerptsOn Amazonian Isolated TribesThere's some sort of oral history passed down for generations that says: those progressive complex societies — don't go in. They're very dangerous. And they've maintained that politic for at least several hundred years, if not thousands.Channeling Derek JensenYou are just a puny little human. You cannot change this situation as an individual. But figure out what your gifts are: what's really in your heart, and apply them to bettering the situation even in the smallest way you can.On Species Fitness And I came to the conclusion that real species level fitness is intimately connected to the natural world without all this technological mediation that's the why I've just never stopped this path because to me on a personal level, pursuing that wildlife provides me this really strong feeling of living optimally.Connect with James @https://www.jamesvanlanen.com/https://www.humanrewilding.earth/ Get full access to Leafbox at leafbox.substack.com/subscribe

In this episode, Stephan Livera chats with James Van Straten, senior analyst at CoinDesk, to explore the current state of Bitcoin and macro markets. They discuss the nature of bear markets, cycle theories, technical indicators, institutional behavior, and macroeconomic influences affecting Bitcoin's price and sentiment. Takeaways:
In a business world awash with endless content, few voices cut through the noise like Christopher Lochhead: Follow Your Different. In this episode, we sit down with the co-founders of Military Creator Con, James Van Prooyen and Marah Lago, for a candid conversation about the untapped entrepreneurial potential of America's military veterans and their families. The three dive into the values, mindset, and experiences that position veterans as pioneering creator capitalists, explore the origin and purpose of Military Creator Con, and unpack the unique blend of community, grit, and creativity shaping this movement. You're listening to Christopher Lochhead: Follow Your Different. We are the real dialogue podcast for people with a different mind. So get your mind in a different place, and hey ho, let's go. Veterans as America's Untapped Entrepreneurial Force One of the central themes in this conversation is the notion that military veterans embody many of the qualities that make great entrepreneurs. All three agree that the ability to problem-solve under pressure, think outside the box, and adopt a daring, “pirate mentality” are forged through military service as much as through business challenges. James shares firsthand how being tasked with mission-critical communication and IT projects in remote environments taught him to adapt quickly, improvise, and persist; skills invaluable to starting and growing any venture. Marah, coming from a creative civilian background, adds that seeing military spouses and families approach challenges with ingenuity and resilience gave her new appreciation for the community-oriented nature of military life. Both agree that, contrary to common stereotypes, the military is not merely an environment of rigid order-following. Instead, it is a crucible for innovation and resourcefulness, making veterans natural candidates for building businesses or leading creative projects. Building a Community of Military Creators Military Creator Con was born out of a desire to unite veterans, active duty, and military-connected families who were blazing trails in art, digital media, entrepreneurship, and beyond. James and Marah recognized a gap for military creators and entrepreneurs: while the discipline and camaraderie of military service fostered community, transitioning out of uniform often led to a sense of isolation in the civilian creative or business worlds. They envisioned MCC as a gathering to break down those silos, offering a space to learn, share ideas, and collaborate freely. The event's spirit is deliberately inclusive, welcoming not only veterans but also their spouses, families, and anyone connected to military life. Attendees range from podcasters and artists to business founders and technologists. Workshops and keynote talks are designed to equip participants with practical skills in storytelling, marketing, AI, and social impact — delivering on the promise to empower military-connected visionaries to realize their entrepreneurial dreams while staying true to their roots. Lessons in Grit, Creativity, and Community Throughout the episode, the trio reflects on what sets this community apart. There is an acknowledgment that veterans, and the military world in general, are often filled with what Lochhead calls “misfits”: people who don't always fit into conventional molds and are thus drawn to forging new paths. This trait, they argue, is the beating heart of entrepreneurship and creator culture. MCC aims to harness this shared sense of adventure, service, and innovation, nurturing it through mentorship, new technology, and peer support. Stories about overcoming challenges, learning on the fly, and even embracing some chaos, like a good laugh about rationed whiskey or unscheduled road trips, underscore the theme that creativity thrives on adaptability and boldness. By tapping into these lived experiences, Military Creator Con is more than just an event; it's a movement rallying a diverse community to shape the narrative of what it means to create, lead, and make an impact after service. To hear more from James and Marah about the MCC, download and listen to this episode. Bio James Van Prooyen and Marah Lago are the founders of Military Creator Con (MCC). James Van Prooyen, a U.S. Air Force veteran, launched MCC in 2020 as a way to bring military-connected creators, such as podcasters, filmmakers, and entrepreneurs, together to share their experiences and grow their impact. Marah Lago, his wife and co-founder, serves as the CEO of MCC and has been instrumental in expanding the event into a national gathering focused on community, mentorship, and creative empowerment. The conference has grown significantly since its inception, with the 2026 edition scheduled for April 16–18, 2026, in Arlington, Texas. According to a book I just snagged from the libarry, Ronnie Van Skynryd once opened for Black Sabbath and tried to kill his own guitarist while Sabbath guitarist ZAKK WYLDE looked on in horror. Yes you read that correctly. Also I found out today that Mojo Nixon died on a day not far from the day the drummer he portrayed in "Great Balls of Fire" also died. Sounds like a good reason to go back to the earliest episodes of this podcast and relive my "Great Balls of Fire" review with copious amounts of Nick Toshces history of Jerry Lee, eh? What ELSE you got going on, anyway? CHRIST! Anyone who listens to this episode tacitly endorses my purchase of a $60 3-channel mixer pedal I used to record some music with over the weekend. In Episode 408 of Hidden Forces, Demetri Kofinas speaks with James van Geelen, the founder of Citrini Research, which specializes in illuminating and demystifying the transformative “megatrends” poised to shape societies, economies, and the market's distribution of returns for years to come. James and Demetri spend the first hour of their conversation exploring a series of narratives and investment themes—including Trump's recent tariff announcement—that have captivated markets and that are likely to be highly determinative of investor returns in the years to come. They discuss the investment implications of a fundamental reorganization of the global economy, along with its supply chains, energy systems, and underlying technological foundations, to say nothing about the changing relationship of government and fiscal policy to the economy and asset markets. In the second hour, Citrini and Kofinas dig deeper into some of the more consequential themes that they identify in the first hour, including: The wealth-driven white-collar recession that could accelerate the adoption of AI and rapidly reshape the workforce. The rotation out of U.S. equities as America turns to fiscal austerity and as countries in Europe and Asia engage in massive fiscal stimulus. It’s our last episode of Summer School, and today we welcome back clinical psychologist (and “clinical cousin” of Hugh and Josh), James van Cuylenburg. In this episode, James tells us EVERYTHING we need to know about our relationships… well almost everything…there’s a lot to cover. From attachment styles, to breaking trust, to learning how to own your feelings and navigating coupledom through life’s changing seasons. Getting into the nitty gritty, Hugh asks James about intimacy and what happens when you’re not…. having any. And how to start a conversation with your kids about pornography. Relationships make life worth living and whether they’re with an intimate partner, a friend, or yourself, they should be cherished and treated with care. James, we thank you for your guidance. If you liked this episode, and wanted to do some further reflection on it, each week our Vulnerabilitea-mail newsletter shares a question to get you thinking deeper. We’d love to hear from you, so please send your reflections in to the link provided. Subscribe here! If you would like to watch this full episode on YouTube, click here - https://bit.ly/3WwDguJ

James Van Der Walt is a health and life coach specifically helping others with transitions. His career was in ICU nursing in Britain before coming to the US. He found that after a diagnosis of sarcoidosis in his heart and lungs, he was much more accustomed to the nursing role rather than the patient role. Through this part of his life journey, he shared that it took him a couple of years to get to a point where his chronic illness wasn't stopping him from doing what he needed to do and was actually encouraging him to live. James took ownership of his health and through focusing on mental health, he overcame and took back his power to transition in his life. He was able to connect to himself and his purpose. As a life coach now, he supports others as they go through life and all of its challenges and transitions.
