fWotD Episode 3313: Bicentennial Capitol Mall State Park Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia's finest articles. The featured article for Sunday, 31 May 2026, is Bicentennial Capitol Mall State Park.Bicentennial Capitol Mall State Park, commonly known as Bicentennial Mall, is an urban linear park in downtown Nashville, Tennessee, United States. The park is located on 19 acres (77,000 m2) north-northwest of the Tennessee State Capitol, and is considered an extension of the capitol grounds. It is modeled on the National Mall in Washington, D. C., and incorporates Classical Greek, Baroque, and Beaux-Arts architecture. It functions as an outdoor museum that uses symbolism to showcase the history, geography, culture, and musical heritage of Tennessee through a series of monuments, walkways, and interpretive displays. It is also landscaped with plants that are native to Tennessee. Receiving more than 2.5 million visitors annually, it is the most visited of the 61 state parks in Tennessee, and one of the most visited public spaces in Nashville.French Lick Creek passes through the site of the mall, which contained springs that attracted game wildlife and was an important hunting ground for Native Americans. These springs were later utilized by the first European explorers and settlers to the area in the 18th century. The site was prone to flooding from the nearby Cumberland River, and was not permanently settled until the arrival of German immigrants in the 1830s. When Nashville became the permanent state capital, the capitol building was constructed on the hill south of the site. French Lick Creek became contaminated with garbage and raw sewage, and was later channelized and buried in a brick sewer tunnel. The area fell into disrepair in the early 20th century, and many structures on and around the site were subsequently demolished as part of a large-scale urban renewal project funded by the Housing Act of 1949.Beginning in the mid-20th century, several tall buildings were constructed around the capitol, and some people began advocating for preserving the view from the capitol to the north. A large office complex was initially planned for the site to accommodate the enlarged Tennessee government. Plans subsequently shifted to construct a linear park for the state of Tennessee's bicentennial commemoration, although initially this plan faced skepticism from state planners. The park was designed by Tuck Hinton Architects in 1992 and 1993, and required coordination with several state agencies. Groundbreaking occurred on June 27, 1994, and the park was dedicated on June 1, 1996, the 200th anniversary of Tennessee's statehood. Additional features planned for the park, including a carillon and a walkway recognizing donors, were initially delayed due to funding constraints, but were added in succeeding years. The park struggled with maintenance difficulties and underuse in its early years. Since then, it has been recognized as a cultural and historical landmark. In 2018, the Tennessee State Museum moved to the northwest corner of the park, followed in 2021 by the Tennessee State Library and Archives, which moved to the northeast corner of the park. The incorporation of these entities into the mall complex fulfilled design concepts that were first envisioned during the initial planning of the park. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:02 UTC on Sunday, 31 May 2026.For the full current version of the article, see Bicentennial Capitol Mall State Park on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Aria.

It started as a kitchen garden. Nine acres. A favor from her husband. Today, Green Door Gourmet is 350 acres of certified organic farmland on the Cumberland River — one of the largest organic operations in Tennessee — growing 80 kinds of fruits and vegetables, 80 flower varieties, and 25 specialty herbs, including Southern heirloom varieties that most event menus have never seen. Sylvia Harrelson Ganier is its President, and Chief Farm Operator (CFO). She is also the former chef and owner of CIBO, a Nashville restaurant she built before she ever picked up a trowel. She knows both sides of the table. On this episode of Eating at a Meeting LIVE, Sylvia talks about what it takes to feed a city — and what the meetings and events industry gets wrong about food sourcing. She is a past President of Les Dames d'Escoffier International's Nashville Chapter, a member of the James Beard Foundation, Chair of the Davidson County Agricultural Extension Board, and a speaker at the USDA Women in Agriculture convening. Her farm welcomes 85,000 visitors a year, including 5,000 school children who pick strawberries for the first time. The food on your event menu has a story. This episode is where it starts.

Key Takeaways:IThe PSC Metals property owned by Carl Icahn is a significant urban redevelopment opportunity in Nashville, located on the Cumberland River near downtown. The property has been a scrapyard for decades and is heavily contaminated, potentially requiring hundreds of millions of dollars to clean up.Redeveloping the site will be complex, requiring collaboration with the city, state, and federal government, as well as community engagement. The redevelopment is expected to include vertical, mixed-use development with residential, commercial, and hospitality components, as well as public spaces and infrastructure improvements.Integrating public transportation, such as a trolley system or water taxis, is seen as an important aspect of the redevelopment. The community and local politicians will play a key role in shaping the redevelopment, and constructive engagement will be crucial to the project's success. The redevelopment is viewed as a legacy project that could transform Nashville's riverfront and serve as a model for urban revitalization.

Police in Nashville praised singer Jon Bon Jovi for helping prevent a tragedy by speaking to a woman who was on the ledge of a bridge. He and his team were at the John Seigenthaler Pedestrian Bridge as a woman stood precariously over the Cumberland River. Security video shows Bon Jovi and another member of his crew, who were there for a video shoot, slowly approach before arriving at the young woman's side. He leans over the railing and speaks with the woman, while his colleague steps behind her and begins to touch her shoulder. The potential disaster appears to conclude with the young woman turning around and hugging Bon Jovi, before they help her back over the edge. A few minutes later, she is seen leaving the bridge with the rock star. The event took place on Sept. 10, Suicide Prevention Day.PICKING UP MORE THAN GROCERIES:With the recent trend toward traditional in-person matchmaking, rather than using dating apps, singles in Spain are finding love with the help of their local supermarket. First popularized on TikTok, of course, those who are looking to meet a special someone have been putting a pineapple upside down in their shopping cart between 7pm and 8pm at stores in the popular supermarket chain Mercadona. Doing so lets other singles know that you're available — and invites them to bump their cart into yours. Then, later, if both meet in the wine section, it's a match. The grocery store operators aren't big fans of the trend, and claim their staff is starting to hide the pineapples for that one-hour period each day. But it's catching on: Once, police had to be called due to an unruly crowd, and a German supermarket chain has now put the word out to its customers in Spain, inviting them to put a watermelon in their cart, to show they're available.STRANGE THINGS YOU DIDN'T KNOW ARE CONSIDERED BAD LUCK:⇒ Wishing someone ‘Happy Birthday' before their birthday:Many Germans believe doing so will cause misfortune to everyone involved. Instead, they sometimes gather the night before a birthday and begin celebrating exactly at midnight. ⇒ Changing your bed on a Friday: An old...

I have been hiking the Sheltowee Trace Trail in Kentucky over the past 8 years. The 300 mile trail from Morehead, KY to Rugby, TN goes through the heart of beautiful rolling woods- hugging Cave Run Lake, meandering through the epoch Red River Gorge, and then tightly winding around the perimeter of Laurel Lake. After hiking across the dam at Laurel Lake, the Sheltowee follows the Laurel River 2 miles where the trickle of a tributary empties into the majestic Cumberland River. From there, the trail heads south to Cumberland Falls, the premiere tourist destination of southeastern Kentucky. The trail goes west to the South Fork of the Cumberland River and then south until it reaches its final destination in northeastern Tennessee. Three hundred miles is a long way and so I hike it in increments. I have led 8 unique trips with 17 friends and family members since starting the hike in November 2016. I am most proud of going with my son, Isaac, on three of those journeys. He has joined me for 57 of the 191 miles that I have completed thus far.It was in the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area of the trail where I found myself in May 2024 with my friends Slater, Jason, and Clyde. We were prepared for the most ambitious hike that I have ever planned - 43 miles over 4 days. As we neared our drop off point, we saw a black bear scrambling into the forest as our van rambled along the gravel road that terminated at our trailhead, Peter's Mountain. None of us had seen a bear before in the wild. It was relatively small, but I am sure bigger than my 200 lbs frame. We were thankful that it was about five miles from our starting point AND we would be walking in the opposite direction. Clyde dropped us off and we confirmed our plan to meet up at Yamacraw Bridge - 42 hours and 29 miles later.Three miles into the Sheltowee, we encountered another black bear, about the same size as the first, that ran uphill and behind a large boulder as we unsheathed a hatchet and prepared for the worst. We neither saw nor heard any more of the bear after we passed the bend where it emerged. Quickly, we descended to Desperation Creek and on towards the Cumberland River. The wildness represented in an animal like a bear is distinctly different from the wildness of a unique ecosystem, far from civilization. A beautiful, remote landscape elicits the joy of being the audience of a rare spectacle, while an animal strikes the fear of being part of the spectacle, where actions have real consequences in a unique and unpredictable situation. Wilderness is the setting where our historic relationship to nature can be experienced. In a controlled environment, a zoo for example, the wildness of a bear is obscured by the domestic surroundings. With the trappings of safety, it is impossible to truly feel the nature of the animal. Hiking brings you into the liminal space of wildness and unforeseen scenarios. We all stepped to that threshold before the bear - and the feeling it elicited - passed and was not seen again. At sunset, we found a beautiful beach camp location along the Cumberland. We woke to rain. And it rained, with a few hours of reprieve, for the next 24 hours. We were prepared for the weather, but it was nonetheless painstaking. When attempting to hike 18 miles in a day, there are many decisions to be made around conserving energy, pushing through pain, finding ideal rest sites, and understanding the needs of fellow travelers. Even very practical decisions like following a map are not always straightforward. The rain abated early on day three, but within 2 miles, we had to cross a creek carrying the previous day's rain - waist deep. Despite the challenge, we made it to our rendezvous point at Yamacraw Bridge on time with Slater departing and Clyde joining us for the remaining 14 miles of the trip. We had hopes of potentially, with good weather, finishing the trail a day early and heading back home to appreciate the luxury of dry clothes.

The case of Riley Strain, a University of Missouri student, has captured widespread attention following his mysterious disappearance and subsequent death. Riley Strain was reported missing after a night out with friends in Nashville on March 8, 2024. His disappearance led to an extensive search that ended tragically when his body was discovered in the Cumberland River two weeks later.  The initial autopsy suggested that Strain's death was accidental, with no signs of trauma from weapons. However, the Strain family, seeking further clarity, ordered a second private autopsy. This decision came amid puzzling circumstances surrounding the discovery of Riley's body, which was found without pants, boots, and wallet. The absence of water in his lungs, a common indicator of drowning, further complicated the narrative and prompted the family to seek additional tests. Today, they're here to spill the secrets on not just elevating your fly fishing game to new heights but also on how their innovative platform can streamline your journey to finding the ideal guide. So, tune in, as we dive into the essentials of matching with the right guide and making every trip to the water count! Episode Chapters with Ben Roberson and Stuart Jordan on Finding a Great Fly Fishing Guide 2:17 - With roots deeply embedded in the outdoor traditions of Kentucky, Stuart shares how his love for nature was ignited during a childhood hunting trip with his father, under the spectacular display of one of the century's biggest meteor showers. 4:31 - Growing up in Kentucky as well, Ben's early experiences with deer hunting and fishing in local lakes and ponds laid the foundation for his lifelong passion. Ben's journey from exploring fishing as a hobby to guiding others and eventually co-founding the Guide Book Co. app reflects his deep-seated love for fishing and his desire to connect others with the beauty and thrill of the sport. 6:12 - Ben shares how Kentucky's central location is a goldmine for anglers, offering easy road trips to a dozen or more states packed with top-notch fly fishing spots. Ben also highlights the Cumberland River's lesser-known trout fishery as a gem, with its trophy-sized catches just waiting to be discovered. 7:42 - Ben, a guide himself, shares some real talk about the struggles he faced—like missing bookings while out on the river, dealing with payment hassles, and the final straw, not having a place for a client to leave a review. These bumps led him and Stuart to brainstorm a fix for these common guide woes. 11:44 - Ben and Stuart tell us what sets Guide Book Co. apart. One of which is they're not about hefty fees or underhanded tactics; instead, they reinvest a portion of their earnings into marketing to help guides gain visibility. This approach not only supports guides in managing the nitty-gritty of business but also connects them with clients eager for their next outdoor adventure, ensuring a win-win for everyone involved. 16:15 - They share their approach to selecting guides for their platform. Their selection process is personal and thorough, ensuring each guide's profile is a true reflection of their expertise and passion. This hands-on approach guarantees that Guide Book's community of guides is top-notch, providing anglers with unforgettable fishing experiences. 28:15 - We dove into how they tackle online reviews and guide selection. Unlike the typical star-rating system, Guide Book opts for a more nuanced approach, asking clients to answer specific questions about their experience. They emphasize the importance of good guides rising to the top based on merit, not payment for better visibility. 36:55 - Ben highlights some of Kentucky's prime fishing spots, emphasizing the Cumberland River and notable lakes like Green River Lake and Lake Cumberland, famous for bass, striper, catfish, and the prized bluegill. For those seeking more information on these waters, Ben recommends the Bluegrass Trout Unlimited chapter, the Department of Fish and Wildlife website, and Kentucky Afield's YouTube channel. Additionally, he suggests the On Water app for exploring waterways, public lands, and access points, making it easier for anglers to discover new fishing spots in Kentucky. 40:18 - Stuart and Ben share some must-do Kentucky experiences, blending the state's renowned bourbon culture with its rich fly fishing opportunities. Ben adds that Kentucky is home to all the big names in bourbon, like Woodford Reserve and Buffalo Trace, emphasizing that true bourbon comes from Kentucky. 42:15 - They discuss their vision for expanding their guide service across the United States, highlighting current hotspots in Florida, the Pacific Northwest, and the Southeast, thanks to a partnership with Southern Culture on the Fly. They're keen on offering nationwide coverage and welcome feedback from fly anglers everywhere. 44:20 - We talk about the etiquette of tipping fishing guides, and Ben shares his insights, emphasizing the significance of gratuities in the guiding industry. Guide Book has integrated a feature for tipping in its trip completion process, offering suggested amounts and the convenience of tipping directly through the platform. 47:00 - Stuart reveals his current favorite for smallmouth bass fishing in Kentucky: the crawfish pattern, which he recommends for its effectiveness. Ben, on the other hand, leans towards trout fishing on the Cumberland River, praising the frenchie as his go-to fly due to its versatility and appeal to rainbow trout. 49:30 - We go into a candid discussion on personal vices and overcoming them. 53:02 - On their road trips, Ben and Stuart have unique preferences for keeping themselves engaged. Ben, a literature major with a master's degree in the field, prefers to immerse himself in audiobooks, making the most of his travel time by listening to literature through apps like Audible. Stuart, on the other hand, leans towards podcasts, specifically highlighting "Hardcore History" with Dan Carlin as his favorite, especially for long drives. Show Notes: https://wetflyswing.com/574

In this episode we welcome author Steve Causey to chat about his book "The LBL Massacre" and he recounts many witness reports of Dogmen in The Land Between The Lakes (LBL) National Recreation Area that spans between Northern Middle Tennessee and Southeastern Kentucky. Land Between The Lakes is a large strip of land inbetween two valleys that were dammed and flooded by the TVA to provide hydroelectric power. The dammed up Tennessee River created Kentucky Lake and the dammed up Cumberland River created Lake Barkley. By the early 1960's all residence were forced off of this land and it became a National Recreation Area. Hiking, camping, watersports, with many more outdoors activities are offered throughout the area.Grab a copy of "The LBL Massacre" and connect with Steve Causey at the links belowhttps://www.facebook.com/steve.causey.399https://www.amazon.com/LBL-Massacre-Steve-Causey-ebook/dp/B0C3YCHWYC/ref=sr_1_1?crid=UWNI7MQD4Y6F&keywords=steve+causey&qid=1707777929&sprefix=steve+causey%2Caps%2C191&sr=8-1Host Eric and the show on the interwebs https://www.facebook.com/eric.freeman.1048https://www.instagram.com/theunseenparanormalpodcast/https://twitter.com/TheUnseenParahttps://www.youtube.com/channel/UC7Nm2o2t_a1TlqDgqlpxxUghttps://www.facebook.com/groups/1048687775648517https://www.facebook.com/UnseenParanormalPodcastBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-unseen-paranormal-podcast--5862293/support.
