Hello! Thanks for listening, and welcome back. Today's episode is one that's a lot more in-depth than the title suggests.I chat about why it's good to learn new skills... which can also be construed as why it is good to suck at something new. The episode is inspired by my acquisition of a 360 camera--the Insta360 X4--and the adventures of trying to document my outdoor adventures. It's been a steep learning curve for me between learning new camera programming, editing software, export settings and filming angles. It has in no way be as easy as I thought it would be, but it has been a fun challenge. Knowledge from a photography course in high school, learning a digital camera a decade ago, and having ideas in my brain have combined so that I'm mediocre at bringing my vision to life... but I'm getting better.I wanted to share my experiences to diminish the stigma around learning new things, particularly as one is over 30. There's a lot of naysayers out there, but it turns out that learning new skills is a wonderful way to work your brain, mitigate against dementia and Alzheimers ,and to increase confidence. The episode also details some benefits of learning new skills, and addresses common fears that can prevent individuals from trying something new. From fear of looking stupid to fear of wasting time and money, the conscious and subconscious programming we received can limit our potential. Overcoming these fears and being okay with being a beginner can lead to greater happiness, build confidence, grow your social circle, expand your comfort zone and improve resilience. Take a listen today to learn how my journey with the camera is going, plus some ways to move through any resistance you have to trying a new things. Our life experience can be enhanced by moving beyond our limits and learning new skills.Resources for this episode include my personal experience and thoughts, a GrowthHackers post, Alicia Clark article entitled "Why it's okay to suck at something new" and a Central Connecticut State University article. Ep.232 Will Maxen (b. Waterbury, CT) is a multi-disciplinary artist living in Houston, Texas, who works primarily in the language of painting. His work blends personal and historical imagery into partially abstracted scenes that explore themes of memory and belonging, navigating both literal and metaphorical spaces. The work delves into the dislocation of identity within these spaces, representing existence as something that teeters on the edge of legibility. This juxtaposition breaks the boundaries between the tangible and the intangible while the painted figures evoke vulnerability, adding a human element to the dialogue. Maxen received his BA in Illustration from Central Connecticut State University, and an MFA in Art Studio at the University of California, Davis. He has had solo exhibitions at Residency Art Gallery, Los Angeles (Felix Art Fair); and UTA Art Space, New York. His work has been featured in group shows at Fridman Gallery, New York; Canepa Selling Gallery, Los Angeles, Marrow Gallery, San Francisco; Chili Art Projects, London. Maxens work is included in the permanent collections of the Jan Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem Museum of Art, Davis, CA; The Art Galleries at Black Studies, Austin, TX; and the Beth Rudin DeWoody Collection. The Barkhamsted Lighthouse Village has an exceptionally unusual backstory. The village of around 100 residents was occupied for about 100 years in the 1700s and 1800s in a very remote section of CT's northwest hills. It was abandoned and virtually forgotten until an archeological team stumbled across it and put the pieces together. The story includes a Romeo and Juliet type of love story, coupled with a fascinating twist explaining how a village 70 miles from Long Island Sound got the name lighthouse. The story is told by Ken Feder, Professor Emeritus of Archeology at Central Connecticut State University, who led the archeological digs.

Send us a textJoin me, Elias, as we embark on a profound historical exploration with Matthew Warshower, a distinguished history professor at Central Connecticut State University. We tackle the intense subject of 9/11, contrasting it with another monumental event in American history, Pearl Harbor. What have we learned from these transformative moments, and how have they shaped the generations that followed? Matthew shares his unique insights into the "9/11 Generation," offering a fresh perspective on how this event is perceived by those who lack a personal memory of it. We discuss the fading emphasis on 9/11 in educational curricula and debate whether it has truly eclipsed Pearl Harbor in historical significance. The episode takes a critical turn as we scrutinize the implications of the Patriot Act, passed in the chaotic aftermath of 9/11. Matthew and I confront the uneasy balance between national security and civil liberties, as we question the necessity of such sweeping surveillance powers. Through a thoughtful exchange, we reflect on the strategic intelligence of Osama bin Laden, the unpreparedness of U.S. leadership, and the economic and security consequences that followed. We also delve into the root causes of terrorism, examining the geopolitical motives behind bin Laden's actions and the complex narrative of retaliation against perceived injustices. We round out our conversation with a deep dive into the global ramifications of U.S. foreign policy post-9/11. From the aggressive stance of President George W. Bush's "Axis of Evil" speech to the lasting impact on international relations, we explore how these policies have shaped modern conflicts in Iraq, Afghanistan, and beyond. Matthew and I advocate for a critical, analytical approach to understanding American history and foreign policy, urging listeners to engage thoughtfully with the nuanced narratives that define our world. As we conclude, we underscore the importance of educating future generations on these pivotal events and encourage listeners to explore further content from our insightful guest.Follow Matthew Warshauer atWebsitehttps://themindfulprofessor.org/Facebookhttps://www.facebook.com/TheMindfulProfessor/If you want to be a guest on my podcast, please join PodMatch on the clicking on the link providedhttps://www.joinpodmatch.com/politically-high-techSupport the showFollow your host atYouTube and Rumble for video contenthttps://www.youtube.com/channel/UCUxk1oJBVw-IAZTqChH70aghttps://rumble.com/c/c-4236474Facebook to receive updateshttps://www.facebook.com/EliasEllusion/Twitter (yes, I refuse to call it X)https://x.com/politicallyht

Most people know something about Mark Twain, the pen name of Samuel Clemens. After all, he wrote his most famous books while living in Hartford, Connecticut. His 25-room house on Farmington Avenue cost over $40,000 in 1874 dollars. Raised as a child in Missouri, he became world famous for his wit and humor both in print and on stage. But what if the man who served as Twain's butler for 17 years had a story that was just as powerful and gripping as Twain's? In today's episode we are going to meet that man, George Griffin.   Twain scholar and collector Kevin MacDonnell's biographical sketch George Griffin: Meeting Mark Twain's Butler which provides the most comprehensive look into Griffin's life to date, and brings us face to face with the man who is said to have inspired Jim in Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. George Griffin came to wash the windows in Mark Twain's new house in 1874 and stayed for seventeen years, taking on the position of butler, the highest-ranking employee in the household.   A photograph of Griffin was discovered recently. It is the only known picture of the man who was also a prominent leader in Hartford's Black community, serving as deacon of Hartford's Metropolitan African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church.   The guests in this episode are Dr. Camesha Scruggs, professor of history at Central Connecticut State University and Twain scholar Kevin MacDonnell.    Dr. Scruggs received her PhD in history from the University of Massachusetts Amherst.  Her current manuscript project is a further examination of how interventions from social, civic, government, secondary and higher education institutions impact the occupation of domestic service during the New Deal Era. She may be contacted at cscruggs@ccsu.edu   Kevin MacDonnell earned his MLS at the University of Texas and serves on the editorial board of the Mark Twain Journal.  He has contributed articles to the Mark Twain Encyclopedia (1993), co-edited Mark Twain and Youth, and has reviewed over fifty books for the Mark Twain Forum. His collection of more than 11,000 Mark Twain items--first editions, letters, photographs, archives, manuscripts, and artifacts--is the largest in private hands and is frequently shared with other scholars and museums. He gives frequent lectures on Twain and may be reached at info@macdonnellrarebooks.com   Copies of The Mark Twain Journal featuring Kevin MacDonnell's biographical sketch George Griffin: Meeting Mark Twain's Butler Face-to-Face may be purchased from the Mark Twain House Museum Store for $12.00. The premise of the tour is that the Clemens family are looking to hire a new cook, and Mr. Griffin has been tasked with conducting the first round of interviews—after all, as the head of the domestic staff, he knows exactly the kind of temperament and skills needed to keep the house running. He leads visitors through each restored room of the house, and gives them his own experience of not only the domestic labor done in that space, but also the emotional labor that he must navigate daily as a formerly enslaved black man working in the house of a wealthy white family. And who is “G. G., Chief of Ordnance?” Find out for yourself when you take a Living History tour with George Griffin.   ------------------------------------------------------- Can you spare $10 a month to help support Grating the Nutmeg? The phenomenon of contagious fire, where police officers are influenced to discharge their firearms upon hearing gunfire from their peers, has been a subject of concern and speculation in law enforcement circles. Recent research spearheaded by a coalition of law enforcement professionals and academics has provided empirical evidence supporting the existence of this phenomenon. The study, titled "An Experimental Test of the Contagious Fire Thesis in Policing," delves into the mechanics and implications of contagious fire, offering valuable insights that could reshape training and operational strategies in policing. In this week's episode of the Policing Matters podcast, host Jim Dudley speaks with the experts who contributed to this groundbreaking research, including John DeCarlo, retired police chief and professor of Criminal Justice at the Henry C. The real story about September 11, 2001, he argues in his provocative new book Creating and Failing the 9/11 Generation, is its impact on Gen Z who he believes should be renamed the 9/11 Generation. 9/11 and its disastrous wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, he argues, have created a lost generation of young Americans without faith in the country's institutions or elected officials. They've been “cast out of the Disneyland” of a unipolar world, he warns, and their cynicism and distrust is only compounding the seemingly never-ending political, economic and cultural crises of the United States over the last quarter century. Rather than the internet and social media, he believes, 9/11 is the root cause of America's current age of anxiety. Matt Warshauer is a professor of history at Central Connecticut State University, his under-graduate alma mater, where he learned that passionate, devoted professors can change lives. Originally bored and uninterested in school, he bounced around the country with his family, attending three different high schools in four years – from California to Illinois and then ultimately to Connecticut. He didn't even want to attend college, but compromised with his parents by going to Norwalk Community College for a few semesters and then transferring to Central.  Even upon his initial arrival at Central Connecticut State University (CCSU), Warshauer's focus was not particularly academic. He studied marketing, but majored in partying. It wasn't until he met professors like Norton Mezvinsky (History) and Barry Leeds (English) that Warshauer's mind was turned on. He has been fascinated with American culture ever since and, basically, trying to figure out how the United States got to where it is today. One of his key interests is the paradox – a core dispute about the meaning of the nation – that has always existed in American society and which is so apparent today with the election of Donald Trump and the extreme divisions that cut to the core of who we are as a people.  Warshauer's study of “the paradox” first focused on early American political and constitutional history, particularly from the nation's founding to the Civil War. Books and articles on Andrew Jackson, slavery, and the political divisions that led to the Civil War were the result. Most recently, Warshauer has turned his focus on 9/11 and memory. June is PRIDE month and we're celebrating by bringing you an episode about efforts to bring LGBTQ+ history to light. As one guest, historian William Mann writes, “Throughout its history, Connecticut's LGBTQ population has moved from leading hidden, solitary lives to claiming visible, powerful, valuable, and contributing places in society.”  In this episode, we talk about what historians have found in Connecticut's Colonial records, some surprising connections to famous individuals and landmarks and at the end of the episode, there's a recommendation for  three places to visit to celebrate LGBTQ+ history.   In order to prepare for this episode, two digital resources created by our guests were used. Both of these are available on the web and the links are below.   The first is the Historic Timeline of Connecticut's LGBTQ Community online exhibition directed by William Mann for the Connecticut Museum of Culture and History. Mann is an author and historian whose books include Kate: The Woman Who Was Hepburn, named a Notable Book of the Year by the New York Times; The Wars of the Roosevelts: The Ruthless Rise of America's Greatest Political Family; Behind the Screen: How Gays and Lesbians Shaped Hollywood; and Tinseltown: Murder, Morphine and Madness at the Dawn of Hollywood.  He is an Assistant Professor of History at Central Connecticut State University, where he teaches LGBTQ History. See the timeline here: https://www.connecticutmuseum.org/lgbtqtimeline/   Mann is available for lectures and book talks. She is an advisor to an inspiring new project, the Ridgefield LGBTQ Oral History Project. The Ridgefield Oral History project is a partnership between the Ridgefield Historical Society and Ridgefield Pride that will train high school students to conduct oral interviews with members of Ridgefield's gay community. Ferentinos is a public history researcher, writer, and consultant helping cultural organizations share untold stories about women and LGBTQ people.   Although Connecticut sometimes seems like such a small, isolated place on the map, it was connected to the far-flung, complex, cosmopolitan British empire even in the 17th century.  This year on Grating the Nutmeg, we're going to explore Connecticut's maritime history with episodes on Colonial Connecticut's trade with the British colonies of the Caribbean, privateering during the American Revolution and the whaling ships sent around the globe in the nineteenth century. Connecticut's maritime entrepreneurs made fortunes by sending ships to sea and employed sailors, shipbuilders, traders, drovers, provisioners, and more.   In this episode, we talk about sugar. Sugar production in the tropical climate of the British islands of the West Indies made men tremendous fortunes. But to cultivate and process sugar cane into sugar required vast amounts of labor. As my guest Dr. Matt Warshaurer wrote in the Summer 2023 issue of Connecticut Explored “The fields and mills of the Caribbean were worked by African peoples stolen from their homes, placed in shackles and delivered to British colonies in North American and the Caribbean.” Connecticut's ships delivered food and building materials to the islands and returned with sugar, rum and molasses. These were then traded for finished goods from England-furniture, china, glass, textiles. We'll hear today about how the trade route known as the “Triangle Trade” moved people, products, and goods across the  Atlantic Ocean, helping to make British plantation owners as well as some Colonial Connecticut families rich.   My guests today are Dr. Matt Warshauer, professor of history at Central Connecticut State University.  The author of five books and countless articles and reviews, Warshauer has written extensively on Andrew Jackson, slavery and the Civil War. Dr. Warshauer serves on the editorial board for Connecticut Exploredmagazine and in the Summer 2023 issue authored the feature story “Connecticut's Sweet Tooth: The Sugar Trade and Slavery in the West Indies”.   To read this story, please go to https://www.ctexplored.org/connecticuts-sweet-tooth-the-sugar-trade-and-slavery-in-the-west-indies/   Dr. Katherine Hermes, the publisher of Connecticut Explored, has published extensive research on the Atlantic world and Colonial Connecticut.  She is the director and historian for the award-winning public history  project  “Uncovering their History: African, African-American, and Native-American Burials in Hartford's Ancient Burying Ground, 1640-1815”. Every once in a while inspiring stories come across my desk and I'm so excited to share this episode. Author, Lauren Hurst - who calls herself not an author - wrote a book about older athletes sharing their path and performance.. Some of which will blow you away.  I'll link in this episode to a previous episode with the hosts of the Huntington World Games in St George Utah. We've had some amazing examples of athleticism in our lifetime. Yet, too little. We hear of 103 year old runners because there are so few. Yet, we don't think we'll be doing that at 103. Many 52 year olds think they are too old to run any more. It's not necessarily age. And maybe running isn't or wasn't even your sport. But something might be.  This episode is for anyone who needs to hear it's never too late.  Lauren Hurst is the author of North of Forty: Inspiring Stories of Older Athletes. Lauren is a lifelong competitive athlete and independent personal trainer. She has trained clients of all shapes and ability levels from ages 7 to 96, and currently specializes in clients over 60. She holds a BS in Corporate Fitness from Central Connecticut State University. Throughout her athletic career, Lauren has been a competitive tennis player, swimmer, bodybuilder, martial artist, runner, duathlete and triathlete. Questions We Answer in This Episode: You describe yourself as “not an author”, what made you decide to take on this kind of project? Can you share a few of your favorite stories from the book? Having spoken with so many incredible athletes and hearing about their struggles and how they have adapted as they've grown older, has this experience changed the way you think about your own competitive and athletic goals? What did you learn that surprised you? What advice would you give someone reading the book (maybe someone who is older and doesn't think of themselves as athletic!) who's inspired to get more fit? How can they make that happen for themselves? In the late 1970s, Hollywood producers took the published biography of Crystal Lee Sutton, a white southern textile worker, and transformed it into a blockbuster 1979 film, Norma Rae, featuring Sally Field in the title role. This fascinating book reveals how the film and the popular icon it created each worked to efface the labor history that formed the foundation of the film's story. Drawing on an impressive range of sources--union records, industry reports, film scripts, and oral histories--Aimee Loiselle's cutting-edge scholarship shows how gender, race, culture, film, and mythology have reconfigured and often undermined the history of the American working class and their labor activism.  While Norma Rae constructed a powerful image of individual defiance by a white working-class woman, Loiselle's Beyond Norma Rae: How Puerto Rican and Southern White Women Fought for a Place in the American Working Class (University of North Carolina Press, 2023) demonstrates that female industrial workers across the country and from diverse racial backgrounds understood the significance of cultural representation and fought to tell their own stories. Loiselle painstakingly reconstructs the underlying histories of working women in this era and makes clear that cultural depictions must be understood as the complicated creations they are. Witchcraft accusations began in Connecticut in May, 1647, with the trial and execution of Alice Young of Windsor, 45 years before the better-known witch trials in Salem, Massachusetts.  Connecticut had witchcraft accusation outbreaks in the early 1660s in Hartford and again in Fairfield in 1692, with criminal trials ending in 1697.  In colonial Connecticut, dozens of women, and some men associated with them, were accused of witchcraft. The colony hanged eleven people.   In May, 2023, Connecticut's General Assembly moved to clear the names of all those accused of witchcraft in the state and issue an apology. State lawmakers, descendants of the accused, and local historians organized to present testimony and pass a resolution declaring the accused innocent. House Joint Resolution 34, "Resolution Concerning Certain Witchcraft Convictions In Colonial Connecticut," passed 376 years after the state put Alice Young to death.   Today, Dr. Kathy Hermes talks with Beth Caruso about the history of witchcraft and the exoneration project, and with Sarah Morin about newly discovered evidence that accusations of witchcraft continued well into the 1700s in Connecticut.   Beth Caruso is a Windsor author who writes historical novels, including her novel One of Windsor about Alice Young, and has published original research about the Connecticut witch trials. She and Katherine Hermes are the authors of “Between God and Satan: Thomas Thornton, Witch-Hunting, and Religious Mission in the English Atlantic World, 1647–1693.” Connecticut History Review 61, no. 2 (2022): 42-82.   Sarah J. The title essay of his first book won a 2006 Pushcart Prize. His work has appeared in The New York Times and the Washington Post, among dozens of publications. He has been a guest on the Today Show, the Morning Show, CNN, BBC, and NPR's Fresh Air. He was educated at Harvard and Columbia universities, and lives in Connecticut with his family.  Bart Gullong grew up in Old Saybrook and Wethersfield, Connecticut, attending local schools before graduating from Tabor Academy in Massachusetts. He earned a degree in English from Marietta College in Ohio, and later received a master's degree in Counseling from Central Connecticut State University. In high school and college, he was a top-level rower and directly after college became a high school and college rowing coach, at Simsbury High School and then Connecticut College. He recruited future Olympians at Conn College, and in his second year as a coach, his crew finished second in the country. By age 25, he was a US Women's crew national coach, and athletes he recruited formed a nucleus of the medal-winning 1976 Olympic team.  He changed careers in his late twenties to become an entrepreneur. Moving to Long Island, he variously worked for NASA as a consultant on the Space Shuttle, developed an early video game company, and co-invented and marketed a speedometer for rowing teams.  At age 50, he met his future business partner Frank Hursey, and Gullong's career took on a new course, although his earlier experiences as an elite coach and inventor/entrepreneur fueled the next stage of his career. Working with Hursey, he brought to the attention of the military a miraculous blood clotting product, QuikClot, that Hursey had discovered two decades before. QuikClot was immediately adopted by all branches of the military but the Army and was credited with saving many lives in Iraq and Afghanistan. Now QuikClot (also known as Combat Gauze) is in all American military first aid kits, and is used by first responders worldwide. The small company that Gullong and Hursey created in 2002 out of a workshop recently sold for more than half a billion dollars.   Topics covered in this episode: QuikClot Introduction  QuikClot User Surviving a Tragic AccidentMilitary Medicine  Advancements in Battlefield Injury TreatmentScience and Innovation in Protecting Soldiers' LivesApplication in Civilian Settings  Natural DisastersSafety and Efficacy of ZeoliteIntroducing QuikClot to the MarketReducing Mortality RatesEmergency Kits and First Responder GearPerseverance and Grit  Achieving SuccessNobel Prize in Medicine  Contributions of InnovatorsControversies and Politics  Global Reach  Humanitarian Mission To learn more about Charles Barber and Bart Gullong and their work, head over to https://www.charlesbarberwriting.com/__________________________________________________________ After my conversation today, I am 100% sold on QuikClot.
