Celtics PRIDE: Paul Pierce and Reggie Lewis with Rich Jensen

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 14, 2021 47:01

This week's episode of the Celtics Pride Podcast with Adam Motenko, Josh Motenko @coachmotenko and Mike Minkoff @mikeminkoffnba, the crew brings in special Guest Rich Jensen, who received rave internal reviews for his CelticsBlog article “Greatness, Glory and The Truth” about Paul Pierce's legacy in the wake of his recent NBA Hall Of Fame Induction. One commenter stated “this is one of the best articles I've ever read on celticsblog.” Go check it out and tune into this podcast, to hear where we think Paul Pierce ranks among his contemporaries of his era like Kobe, Lebron, Wade, Iverson, Vince Carter, Tracy McGrady, Reggie Miller and Grant Hill.   Rich Jensen wrote about the difference between generations of Celtics fans. “My dad had grown up with Russell and Cousy, Heinsohn and Havlicek. I grew up with Dee Brown and Reggie Lewis, Rick Fox and Brian Shaw.” Tune in to see where Rich (and his dad) would put Pierce in the rankings of Celtics lore. Like Rich's dad's Celtics, this podcast is somewhat slow-paced, but is overflowing with mystique.   “When he was a kid, my dad had a TV that probably weighed as much as a car, and the only thing that was on basketball wise was the Celtics. He grew up in a town of 200 people in South Dakota, similar to what it was like in the movie hoosiers. My dad was a fan of John Havelicek when he was at Ohio State before the Celtics even drafted him.”   Rich continues the conversation by remembering Reggie Lewis, so the Celtics PRIDE team asks Rich where he would rank Lewis - and Jayson Tatum - in comparison to Pierce. This podcast is dedicated to anyone who remembers the 1980s, and loves Celtics basketball.   Remember to rate, review, and subscribe to the Celticsblog podcast feed (“Celtics PRIDE”) and follow us on Twitter @celticspridepod, a @celticsblog podcast.  Hosts: Adam Motenko, Josh Motenko @coachmotenko and Mike Minkoff, @mikeminkoffnba  Email: at celticspridepodcast@gmail.com You can find regular episodes of the CelitcsPod and Celtics PRIDE podcasts on Apple, Spotify, Stitcher, or wherever else you listen to your podcasts.  Learn more about your ad choices. Celtics PRIDE: Tiering the Eastern Conference (and Juancho Trade Reactions)

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 7, 2021 89:24

Of course… We spoke too soon; just when we thought Brad and company were done making news, they swung in with an unexpected trade that shipped out Carsen Edwards and Kris Dunn to the Memphis Grizzlies for budding movie star, Juancho Hernangomez. Adam, Josh, and Mike kick things off by breaking down the trade with their initial reactions; are the Celtics better off? Did Mike or Adam literally pack Carsen's bags and drive him to the airport? Are there any benefits beyond the on-the-court product? After that, the gentlemen take a deep dive look at the Eastern Conference, ranking all 15 teams across four teams: Belles of the Ball (championship contenders); Life of the Party (playoff locks); Happy to be Invited (play-in candidates); and Ugly Stepsiblings (not in the conversation). What follows is a lengthy, thoughtful exchange trying to make sense of an offseason full of player movement and a suddenly deep and competitive Eastern Conference. Into which tier did Josh, Mike, and Adam put the Celtics? What overall seed? What teams are our locks to make the playoffs? And how do our rankings compare with yours? Check out this week's episode and let us know at @celticspridepod on Twitter or celticspridepodcast@gmail.com! “Between just my genuinely valuing the moves that have been made over the course of this offseason, and just three-plus decades of homerism seeping into my blood, I have talked myself completely into this iteration of the Celtics team being… definitely a playoff lock.” Mike Minkoff   Remember to rate, review, and subscribe to the Celticsblog podcast feed (we're “Celtics PRIDE”) and follow us on Twitter @celticspridepod, a @celticsblog podcast. Celtics PRIDE: Offseason Grades and Biggest Questions

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 31, 2021 65:19

Now that the dust has finally settled on the offseason (we think), Adam Motenko, Josh Motenko and Mike Minkoff break out the red pen and start handing out grades. In doing so, we touch on our favorite and least favorite moves of the offseason during which we answered the following questions: Was the Kemba Walker trade anybody's favorite... or did it rank at the bottom? Who rated the Marcus Smart extension as their favorite move of the off season? Did Adam double down on his concern over the Robert Williams extension and rate is his least favorite offseason move? And did former hard feelings about losing Evan Fournier linger? We also touched on key questions stemming from the offseason including whether Josh Richardson can shoot 3s, whether Al's still got game, and if Timelord can stay on the court now that he's been paid. And, finally, we give out our overall grades for the off-season. How did our grades compare to yours?  We wrap things up by shifting gears and taking a look at the Celtics roster and how our logjam of quality (if not always spectacular) players will present Ime Udoka with some interesting rotation decisions. How many minutes per game should each of our top 10-12 players get? Does the Dennis Schroeder signing mean Payton Pritchard won't even see the floor? Should Aaron Nesmith be considered for a spot in the starting lineup? And why, exactly, is Jabari Parker still on the roster? All that, and more, on this week's Celtics Pride! “I think the moves that they made were a lot of lateral moves. I'm actually not as excited about this team as I was before last year… or the year before that, or the year before that. This is kind of the lowest I've been about this team in the last 4 years!” Josh Motenko on the Celtics' offseason.  Remember to rate, review, and subscribe to the Celticsblog podcast feed (we're “Celtics PRIDE”) and follow us on Twitter @celticspridepod, a @celticsblog podcast.  Hosts: Adam Motenko, Josh Motenko @coachmotenko and Mike Minkoff, @mikeminkoffnba  Email: at celticspridepodcast@gmail.com Learn more about your ad choices. Celtics PRIDE: Why The Rob Williams Extension?

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 24, 2021 57:26

Adam Motenko, Josh Motenko and Mike Minkoff discuss why the Celtics might have been better off waiting to give Robert Williams his contract extension that now kicks in after this season. Adam gives his top 4 reasons why he thinks it was a poor choice by Brad Stevens. Along the way they bring you up to date on what this means for the likelihood of Bradley Beal wearing Celtics Green in the future, how little the Timelord has actually been on the court, and where Williams ranks in the league at his position based on his rate of pay. We'll be honest, Adam get's pretty fired up about this, and Mike makes several key points to contest Adam's sentiment. When the Celtics Front Office gives us lemons, the Celtics Pride Guys will sometimes make angry lemonade. On the eve of Josh Richardson signing a 1 year extension with the Celtics for 12.4 million, Josh shares his feelings on the Celtics spacing issues with their new identity being tied to their three veteran guards who are good defenders, but poor shooters. Smart, Richardson and Shroder are shooting a combined 33.8% from 3 for their careers. Coach Josh explains what this could mean for Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, and the Celtics pick and roll options in 2021-2022. “Will the Celtics need to finish top 5 in the league in defense to make up for their lack of guard shooting?” Remember to rate, review, and subscribe to the Celticsblog podcast feed (we're “Celtics PRIDE”) and follow us on Twitter @celticspridepod, a @celticsblog podcast. Smart signed a reported 4 year, $77.1 million contract extension that would kick in after this season. We like the deal but discuss how it impacts the salary cap going into the year Bradley Beal becomes a free agent.   “The Celtics are NOT going to have max cap space going into next season.” - Mike Minkoff Josh suggests Smart's 77 number is lucky and Adam walks back his comments on the Celtics ownership group's willingness to spend into the luxury tax as some of the least wealthy owners in the league. The guys move on to discussing Dennis Schroeder's signing and role on this team including current preferences for starting lineups. Is Schroeder coming off the bench? Conversation moves to reactions to summer league at this point including looking ahead to the summer league championship game. Could Juhann Begarin or Yam Madar accept a 2-way contract with the Celtics? Finally, the Pride guys discuss their hopes for the rest of the offseason with a focus on a desired consolidation trade with the end of the bench. Lastly, congratulations to listener @ChrisCKerr for correctly guessing Josh's trivia question about the last player to wear Celtics green with the name Bruno. Listen to the end for the answer. @ChrisCKerr now deserves the adoration of all Celtics fans for his Celtics PRIDE level knowledge of the Celtics.   Remember to rate, review, and subscribe to the Celticsblog podcast feed (we're “Celtics PRIDE”) and follow us on Twitter @celticspridepod, a @celticsblog podcast. Adam, Josh and Mike start by overreacting to game one of the summer league. They give their takes on Yam Madar, Carsen Edwards, Romeo Langford, Aaron Nesmith, Payton Pritchard Juhann Begarin and Sam Hauser. Is Yam already better than Carsen Edwards? Does Josh still think Romeo Langford can be an all star? Should we be happy with Aaron Nesmith? Should Pritchard be running the offense more effectively? Is Juhann Begarin a future NBA player? Can Sam Hauser defend anybody? Then the guys vent about the offseason. Mike is happy because the team did what he thought they should but Josh and Adam have gripes about ownership's willingness to spend into the luxury tax and a strategy that has led this team to get worse each of the last 2-3 offseasons. Discussion shifts to Marcus Smart's rumored extension offer and what that means for the proposed cap flexibility for 2022-23 that the front office is using as justification for not re-signing Evan Fournier. Josh poses the problematic question, "who do you want to be the team's third leading scorer next year" which is deeply concerning no matter the answer. On this episode of the The Celtics PRIDE podcast the guys react to the Celtics trading Kemba Walker and the 16th pick in this year's draft for Al Horford and Moses Brown. Was this a good deal for the Celtics? Did they make the trade too early in the not-even-the-offseason? Was it too much to give up the 1st round pick in addition to Kemba? The guys talk through the way the trade will impact the Celtics' ability to make additional moves this offseason, and begin discussing what those moves may look like: Which positions will (or should) the Celtics target? Are there specific players they should pursue in trade or free agency? Will the team prioritize signing Evan Fournier?  “And that ultimately boils down to exactly what this trade was about which is creating flexibility and pathways to get to and increasing the overall talent level -- and high level talent -- on this team, and before that trade of Kemba, we had no pathways for the next couple of years.” - Mike Minkoff Next up the crew explores how this trade impacts the team on the floor. Are the Celtics better, today, than they were before the trade? At least one of the Celtics Pride hosts thinks so! Do you? The team then starts to look at what this decision may signal about Brad Stevens as the President of Basketball Operations. Is he following the often problematic pattern that many former coaches turned front office personnel fall into -- overvaluing veterans and undervaluing draft picks at the expense of long-term planning? And should anything be read into Brad Stevens mentioning Jaylen and Jayson -- but not Marcus -- during his Monday afternoon press conference?  All these thoughts, and more, on this episode of Celtics Pride! On this episode of the The Celtics PRIDE podcast the guys briefly ponder whether Marcus Smart has lost a step, in light of the news he failed to make an All-Defense team. Then, they take a deep look at the “Kemba Walker Conundrum” and explore whether team building oriented around small point guards is simply doomed to fail. Adam shares his small point guard hypothesis and asks Mike and Josh to weigh-in, before revealing what he found when he dug into existing research on this very question. Josh and Mike share their perspectives, understanding of the research, and core basketball beliefs, as the crew ultimately looks at the implications for Adam's question on the Celtics' -- and Brad Stevens' -- upcoming decisions heading into the offseason. Will Stevens move away from Ainge's affinity for small point guards? And is there really better value to the Celtics in trading Kemba or keeping a potential 20 ppg scorer? “What I wanted to ask you guys is, I've had this hypothesis that small point guards, once they start to age -- once they get into their early 30s -- they regress really quickly and faster, more dramatically than other sized players; So, I first want to ask you guys… what are your thoughts on that hypothesis?” - Adam Motenko. Finally, the team briefly reflects on the ongoing coaching search, whether the Celtics' preferred choice is currently on the bench for a team in the playoffs, and how and when Celtics fans are likely to hear the news about the team's new coach. Or do the Celtics take the risk of letting Rob his restricted free-agency next summer? Of course, there's always the option of trading the high-flying big, too. On this episode of the The Celtics PRIDE podcast the guys give secondary thoughts on Brad Stevens in the President of Basketball Operations role after having a few days to digest the news. How will Stevens differ from Ainge in the way he runs the front office, the type of culture he creates and the way he caters to the modern player?   “I'm really curious about what Stevens is going to look like, what his values are going to look like as an executive and what kind of player talent evaluation he is going to care about… we don't know what Brad Stevens cares about and we will find out as he starts making moves. I don't know what else to do but wait and see and evaluate once we see what he does.” - Adam Motenko The guys then look ahead to the offseason. They compare this team to the one Danny Ainge took over in 2003 and argue about the ceiling of this Celtics roster. The answer determines the types of moves they may need to make this offseason. How limited is this team's future because of the salary cap picture. They look at trading Kemba Walker and discuss some possible deals. They also discuss re-signing Evan Fournier, trading Tristan Thompson, trading Marcus Smart and extending Robert Williams. Is Dame Lillard a realistic option and would we even want that contract? Finally, Adam updates a couple of bets the guys made this season.   Remember to rate, review, and subscribe to the Celticsblog podcast feed (we're “Celtics PRIDE”) and follow us on Twitter @celticspridepod, a @celticsblog podcast.  Hosts: Adam Motenko, Josh Motenko @coachmotenko and Mike Minkoff @mikeminkoffnba.   Email: at celticspridepodcast@gmail.com You can find regular episodes of the CelitcsPod and Celtics PRIDE podcasts on Apple, Spotify, Stitcher, or wherever else you listen to your podcasts. Celtics PRIDE: Ainge Retires & Stevens Promoted

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 3, 2021 47:25

The Celtics PRIDE guys react to the news of Danny Ainge retiring, and the promotion of Brad Stevens to the President of Basketball Operations. Josh waxes maybe a little too poetic about his theories of how this transition was in the works for a couple years since Danny Ainge’s heart attack in 2019, and gives a heart-felt “Thank You” to Danny Ainge with some words of gratitude for his 18 years at the helm of the Basketball Operations and personnel decisions. “The main thing is that Celtics pride continuity is maintained with the homegrown guys staying within the franchise to keep tradition alive. That's the bridge that Danny Ainge made from red Auerbach, and if Brad stays a while and can handle the job, that's the best way to continue having good people and maintaining tradition at the same time. It creates hopefully continued continuity of institutional legacy.”   Mike and Adam ask “is this a good thing?” and offer implications of this move on the team going forward. Then Josh provides some names of candidates out of his list of 25 that should be on the short list due to three criteria: 1.) Ties to franchise legacy and history, 2.) Age/relatability to the new generation, and 3.) Respect from the players. The Celtics PRIDE guys discuss the play-in game matchup with the Wizards including some interesting takes about Russell Westbrook’s passing and decision-making, and whether the injury to Bradley Beal’s leg will hamstring his game when the ball tips up. Can the Celtics beat the Wizards without Jaylen Brown if they have a full-strength Beal? Do they even want to and then face the Brooklyn Nets in the first round? Tune in for every scenario and how we could be seeing not just the Wizards in the near future, but potentially the Hornets, the Pacers, the Sixers, and who we’d rather see. Find out who the Celtics play if they win, if they lose, and how to weigh the pros and cons of the next 72 hours of Play-In Mania.   The Pride Guys then discuss the somewhat skewed opinions shared by some Celtics fans about the benefits of missing the playoffs, and whether getting past the play-in games and making the playoffs is good development or potentially bad development. Mike reminds us of how getting demolished in a playoff series was not the best thing for Paul Pierce’s career back in 2005 when they lost to Indiana, and the backlash that Paul Pierce took for that all summer. Coach Josh vehemently disagrees and recounts all the benefits of playoff experience, especially when the team is young, like this year’s Celtics. Then the former coach “goes-in” on how this is a potentially huge postseason form Jayson Tatum as he tries to prove his doubters, detractors and haters who say he’s soft wrong about his ability to lead a team without Jaylen Brown next to him.   “If Tatum can get to the FT line 14 or 16 times, and do things that say 'follow me because I can be tough too' that will go a long way towards the offseason and (teammates) being able to say, ‘look at our leader who got tougher in the playoffs - that’s the mark on Tatum's career, 'you’re kinda soft.” - Josh Motenko Remember to rate, review, and subscribe to the Celticsblog podcast feed (we're “Celtics PRIDE”) and follow us on Twitter @celticspridepod, a @celticsblog podcast. Learn more about your ad choices. Jaylen’s injury is the same as Bojan Bogdanovic and Romeo Langoford, although with Jaylen Brown, his injury was sustained to his left (non-shooting) wrist. Bojan has been playing great after his come-back from the injury. There is a 3-6 month recovery time, so the Celtics are hopeful Brown will be ready by the start of training camp 5 months from now. Brown played 58 total games, and ironically has incentives tied to making the All-Star team and playing exactly 58 games, which increases his earnings $1.339 million, according to Bobby Marks.   Where do we go from here? Mad Mike thinks we should rest Tatum, Walker, and Smart “Put them in bubble wrap…” oh, and Timelord too. Coach Josh tries to explain why this is the stupidest unrealistic decision ever conjured by a human brain, and is evidence that Mike just doesn’t get it.   “You’d be fired… so I guess it’s lucky for us you were never hired.” Josh Motenko “You think I’m a Negative Nancy and I think you’re an irrational optimist, so there you go” - Mike Minkoff Can you tell we’re upset about such a depressing culmination of the season, given the news regarding Jaylen Brown? It’s a good thing Adam is there to eulogize the season with words of wisdom. Tune in for some much needed Celtics Therapy.
