Andrea's advocacy has won her national recognition over the years, including being named “New Mobility's Person of the Year” in 2021. Getting comfortable talking with patients or other healthcare professionals about disabilities can be challenging. It's not something that is typically covered in school, and if you don't have personal experience with the subject, you may find yourself floundering trying to find the right thing to say – or to avoid saying the wrong thing. And when you don't feel comfortable, how can you expect your patient to feel comfortable? We asked our Real World NP community their questions for working collaboratively with disabled patients. In this week's episode, we got answers from Andrea Dalzell, Disability Rights Influencer to those questions and more. · What is person-first language, and why it is so important· Things that you may not have considered about accessibility· What workplace accommodations are – and are not· How to advocate for people with disabilitiesWords matter. The way that we, as clinicians, receive and interact with our patients with disabilities translates to how they (and their disability) are perceived in so many other aspects of their life. Working to develop an understanding, in a deep way, of how a patient's disability impacts their overall life is a vital part of this. Likewise, improving understanding of how the language we use can positively or negatively impact patients, along with the ways that we interact with those same patients, is an important part of our roles as clinicians. Finding our voice is one of the challenges that we sometimes fail to pass. Whenever we try to speak up, something gets in our way. And sometimes, we listen more to what others tell us rather than what we truly want to say or do. We are so caught up with the opinions of others that we end up losing sight of what we want. But we must stop listening to the noise and find our own voice. Only then can we be happy and contented with our lives. In this episode, we welcome our guest, Andrea Dalzell. She is a nurse with degrees in Neuroscience and Biology. She was diagnosed with transverse myelitis and began using the wheelchair at the age of 12. Given her diagnosed disability, this did not stopped her from achieving many things. Let us learn how she did it as she shares her experiences and thoughts on how we can find our voice. Getting through nursing school and passing the NCLEX is already hard on its own. Now imagine doing it with a disability and experiencing discrimination every step of the way from nursing faculty, clinical sites, and potential employers. More than 1 billion people in the world openly have disabilities, and still, so many more don't publicly acknowledge them. In this episode Nurse Alice talks with Andrea Dalzell aka The Seated Nurse, a registered nurse, healthcare advocate, disability rights influencer, speaker, and most importantly, a survivor. Andrea candidly shares some of the many obstacles she encountered in nursing school, how she got through them, and the 76 interviews she had after graduation before her first clinical position as a registered nurse and wheelchair user. Fast forward to today, Andrea is still on a mission and is now the founder of an organization, The Seated Position, focused on helping those with disabilities have access to education and courses to enter the professional workspace. While life as we know it has changed drastically in the last few years, some things will always stay the same. For the past 30 years religiously, John Dalzell has spent the weeks preceding Christmas camped out on Hill Street collecting funds for the Souther Area Hospice. There was no exception this year on his eightieth birthday as John stood in his trailer and chatted to the passers by who threw money into his bucket, or those who came down specifically to show their support and wish him a happy birthday. Over £1.85 million has been raised through the sit-out over the years and John, who has weathered every storm to become a local Christmas legend in the town, tells his story to Armagh I. Meanwhile, in Rostrevor on Christmas Day the crowds were out as usual for the annual Christmas Swim that has been on the go for 50 years. One of the founders Gerry Sloan tells how it all began in 1972 during a 24-hour anti-internment hunger strike, when Down GAA legend, the late Leo Murphy, popped his head into the protestors' tent and asked if anyone fancied a swim. The organisers raised £100 when they made it an official event a couple of years later and since then the swim has raised over £100,000 for local charities. Kevin Cole who runs local Rostrevor watering hole Henry's ran into the tide for his thirtieth consecutive Christmas dip this year and he, along with some others, chatted with Armagh I for this week's podcast.

Emily Dalzell speaks to Toria about life 'on the other side' of teaching, where, after 11 years as a Head of Music in secondary schools, left the profession after a serious mental health breakdown and Bipolar Disorder diagnosis. She speaks about the vital need to open the conversation about how schools (in particular, school leaders) can do more to support teachers with a mental health condition and discusses the 'other side' of teaching that doesn't often get spoken about; the struggle teachers face to manage living with mental health issues, the lack of understanding and differentiation between 'wellbeing' and understanding mental health and how schools should empower teachers to thrive, not just about survive. Your angels Getting to know your angels What is angel healing? What are angels? The ideas behind what angels are may be informed by your religious background. For some people, angels are guardians or loved ones who have passed on. For others, angels are messengers from God. The word “angel” is Greek, and it means messenger … “el” at the end of the word, as well as [at the end of] a lot of angel names such as Michael, Raphael, Gabriel … comes from the Hebrew word “Elohim” which means the divine. So really … angels are messengers of the divine. (Heidi Dalzell)Across the board, angels are believed to be energetic beings that want to help and guide people. People project human forms onto them in a way to empathize and connect more easily with the concept of angels. What angels look like, if you believe in them, is quite dependent on you. Your angelsEach person has angels. You have guardian angels who have been with you for many lifetimes. Our guardian angels are divine intelligence that expresses itself to us in an individual way so that we can develop a personal relationship with them. (Heidi Dalzell) The relationship that you form with your angels is unique to you and them. They may come to you in a vision, or as a physical touch, or energetic sensation. Each of your angels will feel different to you: your guardian angel will feel different from an archangel. Your angels want to connect with you. They want to help people, but they cannot connect to and guide them if the person is not open to receiving their messages and opening that channel of connection. Getting to know your angelsThere are different ways for you to begin meeting your angels: Enter a meditative state Say “guardian angel, thank you for allowing me to know you”. Talk with them in a way where you thank them for what you are hoping for them to do Then, ask them what you would like to know Listen for the answer and be in stillness. What is angel healing? It is a part of the energetic world. Therefore, angel healing is a form of energy healing. It connects to what the client is struggling with and encourages them to deepen their connection to themselves and their spirituality. As a therapist, it is possible to form energetic attachments to your clients, especially when you are treating them through difficult issues of their own. Sometimes you may need to perform a chord-cutting ceremony to separate yourself from their energy to protect your own and to maintain the therapeutic process. Connect With MeInstagram...
