Chris is joined by Eric Geddes and author Jonathan Geltner to discuss Chapters 1 and 2 of the fourth book in the Narniad (is that what we're calling that now?), The Silver Chair. Among other things, we discuss: How we're all graduates of Experiment House now The school Experiment House was maybe sort of kind of based on The real means of getting into Narnia this time (is it the door or Aslan's breath?) Aslan's Country as Eden/The Terrestrial Paradise, and Pole and Scrubb's very literal Fall The role of the four signs and memory Knowledge, experience, and recognition The name of the book Silverchair (who were, as it turns out, fans of Narnia) Things we didn't discuss but I'd planned to: The Door in the Wall, a beautiful fairy-story by H.G. Phil Scrubb, the Canada Basketball warrior, pulls up on Canada Hoops! Phil sits down with your boy Matty to share his basketball story thus far. Taking time out of his busy schedule to join us PScrubb lets us know how his season is going in Turkey; especially coming off of the FIBA WC tournament with the SMNT for Canada Basketball. Phil takes us back to when he was growing up in Richmond, British Columbia and learning basketball from his parents and alongside his brother and SMNT teammate Tommy. Phil tells us how he kept basketball fun and didn't take it too seriously in an effort to enjoy the game and spend time with friends through basketball. Phil talks about playing at Vancouver College in high school before taking his game to Carelton University where he would cement himself as arguably the greatest CIS/USports basketball player of all time. As a Raven Phil became a 5 time National Champion and a MVP multiple times. Phil talks about the influence of Head Coach Dave Smart and what Coach Smart did for Phil along the way. Phil tells us about turning pro; with NBA Summer League stints in Memphis and Toronto. Phil then headed to Europe to start his career overseas; playing in multiple countries. Phil tells us what he has enjoyed the most so far in his career in Europe; and his special season in Spain in 2022 alongside his brother Tommy. And you know we get into the Canada Basketball stuff with Phil! PScrubb talks about how special it is to play for Canada, playing in all 12 Qualifiers for the FIBA WC, making the roster for the World Cup, winning bronze and helping the SMNT qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympics. Phil tells us why Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is the ultimate leader for the SMNT, how Dillon Brooks was the x-factor for the team at the WC and why Kelly Olynyk was the easy, obvious choice to be the Captain for the SMNT at the WC. Phil tells us who he is close with from his time on the SMNT and then Phil gives us his great Top 5 of all time for Canada Basketball. This is an episode you don't wanna miss. Fuad and Elias are back for another edition of 3 in the Key! The fellas discuss some recent news in the NBA including the massive deal between the Celtics and Jaylen Brown. The Celtics beat the Magic in their final Summer League Game 94-77. At this point, Banton and Jordan Walsh are both on standard contracts and Scrubb and Davison are both signed to 2-Way deals. With that being said, all 4 of them either didn't play or played limited minutes in this one. There is still one more 2-Way contract to be given out so this game was more of a tryout for that final spot. I would expect there to be a decision made on that in the next couple days but this was a fun game to watch the rest of the guys get their shots. Champagnie and Bean seem like the natural fits for the final 2-Way deal as they are both tall wings that can shoot which seems to be the biggest need for the Celtics at this point but we also saw good minutes from some bigs as well. Either way, I don't think any of these 2-Way guys are going to mean much for the actual Celtics but it is always good to keep talent in system and try to develop them. Jordan Walsh bounced back after a tough game 2 and led the Celtics to a 95-90 win over the Lakers. The Celtics found themselves down double digits and Walsh came out with a 17pt second half. Overall, fun game for the C's as it's always fun beating the Lakers. Outside of Walsh, Scrubb and Banton also played excellent in this one. Scrubb continues to be my pick for a 2way spot atfer 3 straight impressive performances. Banton, despite a horrible shooting night, played really well. He's a long athletic guard that can handle the ball well and is not afraid to shoot. Tonight was his first game back from injury so it was understandable that the shot was off but the rest of his game looked great. This page is also brought to you by George Dimis at PD Properties. Andre Scrubb On His Early Experiences With The Astors
Pole and Scrubb begin their adventures in Narnia, and we examine four key themes in the chapter: (1)There is no other stream (the living water Aslan offers is clearly a symbol for the living water Jesus describes in John's Gospel that He longs to give us, the only water which leads to life); (2) Sin and its consequences (Jill's sin leads to unimaginable consequences for Eustace, and she models taking responsibility rather than a victim mentality); (3) Aslan's Call and Task (Aslan gives Jill an important and world-changing task that is FAR beyond her own gifts and capabilities); and (4) The Signs (Aslan tells Jill that there are Four Signs that will enable her to complete her task, which she must memorize and repeat day and night, lest she forget [strong echos of Deuteronomy 6).
We meet Pole and Scrubb in this episode, and address five themes from the chapter: (1) Experiment House and education ("Progressive" education was anathema to Lewis, not only because of its disdain for the classics and the Christian foundation of Western civilization, but more importantly because he believed the relativism it cultivates would destroy our society); (2) Outcasts as protagonists (in the 1940s, it was a bold statement to begin a story with a crying, bullied junior high girl as the protagonist); (3) Eustace: Changed by Aslan (The formerly odious Eustace develops qualities like compassion and leadership as encountering Aslan transforms him); (4) Vulnerability leading to Fellowship: (Eustace takes the incredibly risky and vulnerable step of sharing the deep secrets of his heart with Jill); and (5) Calling Aslan OR Aslan calling?(Did Eustace and Jill decide to flee into Narnia, or did Aslan call them?)
