The Lakers finally made their long-awaited return to the basketball court on Sunday afternoon in their preseason opener against the Brooklyn Nets. While the players who did not play -- LeBron James, Russell Westbrook, Carmelo Anthony, Kyrie Irving, James Harden, Kevin Durant -- were far more notable than the ones that did, the excitement was still all the same in the purple and gold's return to action after exactly four months off over the summer. Today's edition of "Can U Dig It?" features Jacob and Christian sharing their thoughts on what was ultimately a blowout win for the Nets, 123-97. They discuss the big performance from Malik Monk, the host of young backcourt players the Lakers have including Kendrick Nunn and Talen Horton-Tucker and whether Sunday's performance could factor into the Lakers starting Anthony Davis at center. With so much talent in the backcourt, does it make more sense for the Lakers to play small more this season? They also discuss the frontcourt, including Davis' one quarter of action on the night. After a frustrating 2020-21 season, Davis looks refocused and re-energized, albeit through just one quarter of one game. The two also give their first impressions of the two centers on the Lakers roster and how they fared in their first performances of the season. The pair also touch on the likes of Wayne Ellington, Kent Bazemore and Rajon Rondo, all who made returns to the Lakers this summer. Learn more about your ad choices. BJ Armstrong and Tate Frazier discuss Rajon Rondo's return to the Lakers and what that means for their team's push for a title. Then, BJ explains why we still haven't seen the best basketball player because we didn't see MJ in practice.
The Lakers re-introduced Rajon Rondo to the local media on Tuesday, and his comments about playing time (which he seems to acknowledge could be spotty at times), the hyper-veteranness of the team (which he believes won't be a problem) and his role as an important, needed voice in the locker room together revealed a great deal about how this team could operate, and what its fundamental character will look like. Meanwhile, for all the talk of the older guys on the team, it's young ones like Kendrick Nunn and especially Talen Horton-Tucker that will ultimately dictate how Frank Vogel's rotations play out. There are realistic scenarios where THT plays 15 minutes a night, and others where he's on the floor for 25-plus. The space between those endpoints will significantly impact how much other players on the roster actually see the floor. So what are the factors that will determine THT's fate? Finally, Jake Fisher of Bleacher Report noted the Lakers are a potential destination for DeAndre Jordan should he be bought out in Brooklyn. That, of course, seems to assume that Marc Gasol isn't actually around, anymore. Conversations around Gasol not sticking around for the second year of his deal - whether because he chooses to walk away or the Lakers make that choice for him - have been a running theme of the offseason. Hard to know exactly what's going on here and why, but it sure feels like something is off. Is Jordan a good fit? What happens if Gasol goes? HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Rondo Returns, Rondo Speaks! What he had to say about his role, and how other comments reflect important aspects of this team's architecture. SEGMENT 2: A word on the Westbrook vs. Rondo's Brother rivalry. Is this going to be a problem? Then, why THT (and to a smaller extent, Kendrick Nunn) could be the big x-factor for the Lakers this year. SEGMENT 3: What's the deal with the Lakers and Marc Gasol? Milwaukee Bucks head coach Mike Budenholzer has been a lightning rod for criticism for most of his tenure in Milwaukee, but he led the Bucks to a championship and was rewarded with a three-year contract extension last week. Adam McGee and Ti Windisch broke down Bud's tenure, the narratives around him, and why keeping him was a no-brainer -- and also why three years made the most sense for Budenholzer in particular. Then they examined the Bucks roster, especially the differences between this group and the one that just won a championship, and shared thoughts on what, if any, needs Milwaukee still has heading into the season. They added a bit about the Los Angeles Lakers and the Western Conference at the end as Rajon Rondo reportedly decided to sign with the Lakers during the pod. The Lakers continue filling out their collection of former players on the 2021-22 roster, with multiple reports saying they'll sign point guard Rajon Rondo as soon as he clears waivers after being released by the Memphis Grizzlies. That he'll land with L.A. isn't a big surprise - he was a common "future buyout candidate" cited as the type of player (figuratively and literally) they'd keep a roster spot open for. But it happened a little faster than expected, which is a good deal for the Lakers. Now, they have a point guard rotation pretty well set. Russell Westbrook, Kendrick Nunn, then Rondo. So how much is he actually going to play? And when he does, what exactly is he expected to contribute? Trying to figure out where he'll have the most impact isn't all that easy. That said, was he the best point guard option out there? Meanwhile, how much of the Jared Dudley Leadership Void is filled by getting Rondo back? He's not the same personality as Dudley (meaning much, much less media friendly... and perhaps just regular friendly, too) but is deeply respected by guys like LeBron James and Anthony Davis. Finally, does he give the Lakers another Hall of Fame player? We open the mailbag to answer the question. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Welcome back, Rajon! What impact will Rondo have on the floor this season? SEGMENT 2: Is the team somehow incentivized to keep signing its former players? How much of Rondo's job will be centered around leadership? SEGMENT 3: Is Rajon Rondo a Hall of Fame player? The Locked On Lakers mailbag asks. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Summer League for the Lakers might be a relatively sleepy time - if anyone playing for the sort of Lakers right now ends up playing a role with the big team this season, things have likely gone off the rails in indescribably horrible fashion - but that doesn't mean there's no intrigue. LeBron James and Russell Westbrook appeared courtside together in Vegas, and then LeBron put out a (now seemingly mandatory?) Insta workout post/message-to-the-haters that got a bunch of people's attention. Now, pretty much everyone thinks the Lakers are going to be really good, and it's just a question of whether the ultimate result is a championship. But that's neither here nor there. What matters are the fictions athletes construct for themselves. So what is LeBron doing? Next, Seth Partnow at The Athletic has a great breakdown of why predicting results this year is so tricky. Russ is a statistical anomaly of his own (good and bad), and there's really no template for any of what we're about to witness, given how singular Westbrook and James are. We discuss. Finally, L.A.'s other squad made a move Sunday, one that raised an eyebrow not just because it sent Pat Beverley and Rajon Rondo to Memphis for Eric Bledsoe, but because it saved Steve Ballmer tens of millions in luxury tax payments. Was it a cost savings move? A basketball move? Both? What does it say not only about Ballmer, but how all NBA owners operate, including Jeanie Buss? Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!
