We are taking a break from our season on Kingdom Innovation bc it's election week in the US, and we think this word from our teammate David Legge is one that is worth hearing, no matter what country you are listening from. As our house churches were gathering here in Little Rock this week, David Legge was in town with us, and we asked him to share a message with us, that he titled, “An Other Worldly Kingdom.” David had given a similar message in Ireland recently at the New Wine Conference, but it was interesting how much of the perspective he gave to the crowd there applies to us in the United States as well, as other countries, when it comes to the ways we can accidentally start finding our hope in a political Kingdom, a Kingdom that is less than the spiritual Kingdom God has invited us into.
JR Woodward, author and national director of V3 church planting movement, shares how freedom and innovation enables movement. He tells us how a story of an ordinary woman innovating for the Kingdom in a retirement home, and he challenges us to all create more room for gifts of innovation to flourish in our communities, even in small ways. --- www.Dwellings.info
Rob Wegner, Director of the Kansas City Underground movement of microchurches, shares with us the surprises he has had in his journey of doing ministry differently over the past seven years. While innovation is a key value in business and education, the church has been hesitant to innovate. As Christian leaders, we often feel dissatisfied with the status quo or overwhelmed by rapid cultural shifts. We need to pursue Him passionately to experience more of the presence of God. King David reflects this in Psalm 63, and others like Moses and Isaiah show us what it is like to hunger after and interact with God's presence. In this message, you'll hear how God is calling us to turn away from other distractions and sins to gain a greater passion for friendship with him. -- If you would like to become a Dwellings Partner through a one-time or monthly gift, you can sign up today here: https://www.dwellings.info/give Want to meet friends on this journey? Ezekiel tells us how the presence of God reluctantly withdrew from the Temple in stages and eventually from the whole nation. The sins of the people had driven him from them. The primary way the presence of God rested among God's people in the Old Testament was in the Tabernacle and the Temple, particularly over the Ark of the Covenant. Unfortunately, the people of God came to the point in their history of taking God's presence for granted, and consequently, they lost it. Listen along as David shares some principles around reverencing the presence of God and how God's work must be done God's way to experience the power of His presence. -- If you would like to become a Dwellings Partner through a one-time or monthly gift, you can sign up today here: https://www.dwellings.info/give Want to meet friends on this journey? In this episode, Christy Nockels tells us how, after years in the Passion Band and as the band Watermark, she has learned to experience his presence in the ordinary moments just as she has on the largest of stages. This episode gives you a glance behind the scenes to our one of our online gatherings of the Dwellings Cohort. Francis Chan is the bestselling author of Crazy Love, Forgotten God, and Letters to the Church, and leads a house church movement in San Francisco. He inspires us all with his recent growing appetite to devour the Scriptures, reminding us that a reading of the Word of God from an unskilled orator might just change us more than any carefully crafted sermon that didn't center on Scripture. He goes on to answer some questions from cohort participants such as: How should we invite the participation of people that are more reserved? Kathryn opens up a conversation around the third shift we are making in our discipleship: from spectators to participants. In an era where our discipleship forms have often centered around a stage or a video, it's interesting to look back at Jesus's way with his disciples. He was the ultimate Rabbi, (teacher) but his teaching was different because it invited participation. He invited his disciples into conversation, asking over 300 questions, and he invited them into practicing their faith... involving them in active miracles, a life of prayer, and more. How could we begin to go back to not only his way, but the way of the early church, and invite participation in new ways?
When Mary and Joseph arrived at the inn some 2000 years ago, there wasn't room for them at the inn. So many of us can find ourselves in the same place this week- so consumed with tasks that we miss Jesus himself. The places we inhabit can also become too full for him, even this week. What type of things can we cut to make room for him? What would it look like for our homes to be more like the manger bed- open and ready to receive him?
In a world that has more accessible information than ever before, we can move beyond information transfer to transformational discipleship. While having knowledge about the Bible and God is very important, it is not enough... we were called to relationship with him. God is meant to be experientially known, not just mentally known. Job had second hand knowledge of God but desired a first hand experience of him... reminding us that there is always more for us as well. One of the world's leading missiologists, Alan Hirsch, comes to us from Australia, explaining how we should question titles but embrace giftings in the church. Learn about the gifting that Christ has given his church, outlined in Eph 4, and a test we can take to help us understand the roles of: apostle, prophet, evangelist, shepherd, teacher. Kathryn and Alan discuss how these giftings have a scope way beyond church and ministry staff positions. This episode introduces the shifts we will talk about during this season: isolation to family, information to transformation, and spectators to participants. We will be reminded that many of these aren't just a shift toward the future, but an echo of the past, as they are informed by the ways of the early church. When it comes to making decisions, sometimes we isolate, making pros and cons lists or ruminating in our beds at 3am. Other times, we seek the counsel of others, hoping their advice can bring clarity to the situation at hand. While we can make decisions on our own, and we do need advice from others, we can often forget that God has ways of speaking into our situation with wisdom that is above the wisdom of man. Learn about a practical tool to use when it comes to making decisions in your life that are informed by God. And then pass it on when others come to you seeking advice. There's no better discipleship tool we can give people than how to listen to God's voice. The Dwellings Podcast is only possible because of the generous partnership of people like you. Despite it being a country where a conversion to Christianity can mean execution, Iran has the fastest growing Christian church in the world. Large numbers of Muslims have first been introduced to Jesus through a dream or vision. Why would God use dreams to reach the Muslim world? And what happens after these dreams or visions occur? In this eye-opening episode, Kathryn invites to Tom to help us know whether dreams and visions can be trusted as a way to hear God's voice. Some of us have a life with God that is characterized by being with him. We might have a lot of practice hearing God's voice. Others of us have a more active life with God, one characterized by doing. We might struggle to sit around listening for God when there is so much to do on the earth. Inspired by the book Aaron and Kathryn wrote, Whole, this conversation focuses on how hearing God's voice relates to taking action.
