Join us for Part 2 of our conversation with Steve Sonderman and Matt Millar as we dive deeper into the importance of apprentices in ministry. Jesus intentionally chose His disciples, He set clear expectations, and prepared them for their mission—so how can we follow His model today? In this episode, we continue to explore: - Preparation – Teaching apprentices what they need to know before sending them out. - Empowerment – Encouraging leaders and helping men overcome fear of failure. - Giving Away Responsibility – Developing leaders by providing clear roles and expectations. - A Holistic Apprenticeship Process – Investing in people at every level of your organization. A structured apprenticeship involves a four-step process: modeling, assisting, empowering, and fully releasing the apprentice into leadership while offering continued guidance. When it comes to graduation apprentices, it's about setting clear expectations, equipping them with what they need, and providing ongoing encouragement and support as they step into their role. Matt Millar also shares key questions to ask apprentices and practical ways to make apprenticeship a core part of your ministry's culture. HCP - Ep. 112 - Status QuoIt's easy in the church to just do what we've always done. We get into our traditions and habits and roll for a long time, but just like an old road that you drive on, at some point it will become some deep ruts.In this episode of the HCP, Larry and Drew discuss looking at all that we do in the church and objectively asking ourselves this question - Are we settling for Status Quo? Are we just going through the motions? Are we slaves to our tradition or obedient servants to our master? Jesus said to go and make disciples, so we ask - is that taking place? Not just is God's Word being read, preached and valued, but are we loving, obeying, serving Him more as a result of becoming more like Him through discipleship and sanctification?Discipleship should be more relational than programatic and in this episode we discuss some ways to rethink some of our traditions. We also discuss spiritual gifts, APEST gifts and Eph. 1 and 4, and how the body of Christ is responsible to build up itself through those giftings, not just a few “professional Christians called staff”.The book mentioned on the program is “Find Your Place” by Rob Wegner and Brian PhippsYou can email us at info@healthychurchpodcast.com orTo find more information about The Healthy Church Podcast go to:http://www.healthychurchpodcast.comor find us on FaceBook!

In 2019, about 80 followers of Jesus left the prevailing church structures to be the seeds for a grassroots movement in Kansas City. They believe God's people are made for more. It is the birthright of every child of God to be a loving missionary and disciple-maker where they live, work, learn and play. Their aim was to plant the gospel in networks of relationships across the city, see disciples made and witness the church emerge in new contexts. At KC Underground, they function with a two-entity structure, a mission agency and a network of microchurches. The mission agency equips everyday people to be loving missionaries and effective disciple-makers in new contexts. As new disciples are made in a new context, a microchurch emerges. Microchurches are extended spiritual families, that live in everyday gospel community, they're led by ordinary people, not paid professionals, and they own the mission of Jesus in their network. For some, this is a very specific pocket of people or corner of culture. For other, this is a geographic network of relationships often defined as a neighborhood. Listen to Episode 15 of the podcast and access the show notes below. Future Church Insights: 1. Rob explains “microchurch” Rob says that a microchurch is a spiritual family led by “ordinary people who live in everyday gospel community and own the mission of Jesus in a network of relationships.” 2. Rob talks about the way they structure KC Underground: Rob talks about “Hubs” – an equipping team – and how those team then include teams of people. For example, he mentions the “Personal Discovery” team that help others to discover their personal calling. He also talks about Startup Coaching, the seven week pathway, financial services and the ongoing coaching they provide micro churches. 3. Rob speaks to the differences in a traditional model and what KC Underground is doing First, he talks about planting the gospel where people currently are, not extracting them out for a professional sermon or service. Then he talks about discipleship and evangelism coming out of relationships that have already been built and established. Finally, he speaks about seeing every person as a disciple maker. Goals and Desired Outcomes of KC Underground The activation of a new Hub in north Kansas City Kansas that is focused on gospel saturation among all the ethnic groups in our city (90+). This particular part of the city has great diversity in ethnicity in a relatively small geographic region of the city. A Kingdom breakthrough here would be a microcosm of the coming Kingdom, where every tribe, tongue and nation is gathered into the global family of God. The activation of a new Hub in the heart of Kansas City Missouri, a few blocks from Troost Avenue. Historically, Troost Avenue has been a racial dividing line in Kansas City. A Kingdom breakthrough here would speak a story of Hope to our whole city. The activation of new missionaries, new Discovery Bible Studies, new disciples, and new microchurches in those two regions of the city. We are intentionally pursuing a full embodiment of all of Expo's key frameworks. The Kansas City Underground is pioneering a sustainable and multiplicative approach to Gospel Saturation in a city via mobilizing all of God's people God's way as missionary disciple-makers in every sector of society who are living out their Masterpiece Mission. Therefore, we are likely a particularly interesting case study for the Expo community, as we are boots on the ground. Links: www.kcunderground.org More of a reader? Download the transcription here. Key Quotes from the episode from Rob Wegner: “Jesus said Go, but most churches are built around Come.” (21:06) “I think the other main thing is instead of seeing people as volunteers, attenders, inviters, members, you need to look at every single person and go, they're a disciple maker.” (24:02) “It's not actually less meetings, it's life together.

Potentially, what can separate a Physical Church from a Digital-Only Church? The ability to disciple people to the point of getting them on-mission… to help them discover their personal mission? This is why I see a similarity between Microchurch Movements and Digital-Only Churches… because we have the opportunity to relationally scale digital to the place of helping find their personal mission. But how do we do that in the Microchurch space? Enter Rob Wegner, one of the leaders of Kansas City Underground and co-author of The Starfish and The Spirit, Rob has experience discipling, equipping and releasing people on Personal Mission across Kansas City. Let's lean in and learn what it looks like in Micro, and figure out how to apply this digitally. This is one of the most productive podcast interviews in my short history of these attempts. Rob Wegner is a good friend and a super intellect. Better yet, he understands the way forward after the pandemic taught us all the fragility of church as we've known it since Constantine, and certainly the way it looked so long ago back in 2019.You'll laugh, and perhaps cry, through this interview.Cut the head off a spider and it dies - same result if you cut off a couple of legs.Cut two legs off a starfish and you get three starfish. Sever all five legs and you'll have six starfish. Every cell of the starfish has the ability to regenerate the entire animal. Cut the head off of the typical U.S. church and it dies or at least goes into a slump. We too often look more like spiders than the church Jesus planted. When the head of the church ascended to heaven he sent the Holy Spirit to live in each believer and every cluster where they gathered. When persecution dismembered the church it multiplied like parts of a starfish.Rob Wegner, Lance Ford and Alan Hirsch partnered, with the help of Ori Brafman who wrote the original Starfish and the Spider, to write this amazing challenge to us all to be more than we've imagined.Crucially appearing on the backside of COVID, even the timing of its release was God ordained--the book held up for two years with production delays. This book is perfect for leaders attempting to discern the way forward after the pandemic. For more, check the Kansas City Underground or scope out the book. Hosted on Acast. The Church was originally a decentralized movement. Before everything became housed in church buildings with hierarchical leadership, the priesthood of all believers was equipped and sent to make disciples. In this episode of the Everyday Disciple Podcast, Caesar talks with Rob Wegner and Lance Ford about why the distributed structures of 'starfish' organizations uniquely fit the church today. Just like a starfish can reproduce itself fully from only one of its legs, churches with this type of regenerative ability are much more nimble in reacting to external change and outside forces. In This Episode You'll Learn: The difference between "spider" and "starfish" organizations. How embracing the starfish's reproductive ability changes the way we lead the church. Why equipping is job #1 for pastors and leaders in the church today. Remember, equipping is different from teaching. Equipping is a relational transaction that is personal and requires time and gives people the freedom to grow as they learn, and learn as they go." In This Episode You'll Learn: Ways that many churches have experienced GROWTH during the pandemic. Will your church continue to live stream their Sunday services? How the traditional sermon is being reimagined for our times. https://everydaydisciple.com/subscribe (Get started here…) https://everydaydisciple.com/subscribe () From this episode: “Yeah we are meeting, we met last week for the first time. And this person of peace in our neighborhood says, “how many people showed up? 6 families?... I wasn't there!” And this lady shows up the next week with six more families, so they had like 13 families doing a discovery type Bible study together. When things started to loosen up with the social distancing in the summer, it emerged into this full micro-church life together. Mostly non-believers!” Each week the Big 3 will give you immediate action steps to get you started.https://everydaydisciple.com/big3 ()Download today's https://everydaydisciple.com/big3 (BIG 3 right now). In this episode of The Church Planting Podcast, Rob Wegner talks to Greg about practical ways to build a high-functioning team that can help shape the culture and future of a new church.
I (Jeff) believe this to be true: In the future, bigger churches will continue to get bigger; but smaller churches will continue to get smaller. And that may not be a bad thing. The mega churches will find a way to succeed. Despite recent attendance trends, the church-growth formulas will continue to succeed. There are people who will continue to connect with these larger, physical expressions of church. To reach different people, however, maybe we should be thinking about a different model. This is where Micro-church comes in. Micro is a discipleship-oriented movement where the church empowers people to be the shepherd, the campus pastor, to lead smaller movements of church. Rather than paying a pastor to be the spiritual overseer for hundreds or thousands of people, the Micro-movement empowers “normal people” to be the volunteer pastor over dozens of people. A model far easier to scale, and most would say the Micro model is closer to the Biblical account of what the church is. There's different flavors of the micro model. Through this podcast we talk with churches who are having success with the micro model. So how does Micro complete the ministry of Church Online? How is Micro an effective model for evangelism and discipleship? What are some steps you can take at your church to start a micro movement? Do you wish you could have more enjoyment in serving the Kingdom? Authors Rob Wegner and Brian Phipps discuss how to discover and use your gifts, passions, and personal story for Christ. Their book is Find Your Place: Locating Your Calling Through Your Gifts, Passions, and Story.
The local church is on the verge of a massive, category shifting change. For 1700 years, the primary identity of the local church in the West has been "church as institution." Over the last 50 years, the church growth movement has brought much needed reformation within this expression. Although God continues to transform many lives through these prevailing models, it has not stemmed the decline of Western Christianity. We can't settle for winning a battle via contemporary church and multi-site, while losing the larger war. Simply producing more of the same will not be enough. Our times require a different expression of the local church - church as apostolic movement, where every person is living a mission-sent life, where every person is a reproducing Christian, and every church a reproducing church. In this work, Mark Beeson, Tim Stevens, and Rob Wegner will share the story of Granger Community Church as they are making the leap to church as movement. Granger is seeking to keep the best of what church growth has taught us, while simultaneously leveraging megachurch and multi-site as a launch pad for missional movements of their people.
Exponential 2011 workshop with Rob Wegner and Jack Magruder. Rob and Jack share the missional DNA and the new leadership model that unleashed redemptive movements from inside a successful "attractional" church (Granger Community Church).
