Peter Greer is the President and CEO of HOPE International, a global Christ-centered economic development organization that operates in 27 countries. Under Peter's leadership, HOPE has grown significantly in scope and influence, investing in the dreams of underserved entrepreneurs around the world. He's also a prolific author with more than 15 books to his name, including Mission Drift, Rooting for Rivals, and his latest, Lead with Prayer. A Harvard Kennedy School grad and a sought-after speaker, Peter combines nonprofit leadership with business insights to fuel a global movement of Christ-centered empowerment and economic justice. Peter joins us to discuss the importance of prayer in leadership and life—especially in light of the wisdom he's gathered in co-authoring Lead with Prayer alongside Cameron Doolittle and Ryan Skoog. In this transparent conversation, Peter reflects on how his own spiritual practices have changed over the years, the challenges of truly collaborative leadership, and why prayer isn't something to squeeze into our schedules—it should be the foundation. “Most leaders today must think they're busier than Jesus—because most are spending less time in prayer, not more.” - Peter Greer “Not organization building, but movement making—that's where the exciting work is happening right now.” - Peter Greer “I've written everything not as an expert, but as a practitioner still learning what it means to live open-handed.” - Peter Greer This Week on The Wow Factor: How Peter's journey from studying international business in Moscow led him to microenterprise and missional work The mission and growth of HOPE International, and how it supports entrepreneurs in over two dozen countries The story behind Lead with Prayer and what inspired Peter and his co-authors to dig deep into leaders' prayer lives Why prayer often decreases as leadership responsibilities increase—and how to flip that script What we can learn from Johnny Erickson Tada about suffering, gratitude, and deeper intimacy with God Terry Looper's sacred pace and how “getting to neutral” helps him make decisions grounded in spiritual discernment The ripple effect of prayer and why we should pray bigger, bolder, multi-generational prayers Practical ways to integrate prayer into your everyday life—like prayer by association and “wasting time with God” How fasting, digital detoxing, and physical posture can deepen your spiritual walk Lessons from the Moravian prayer movement and how a small community's prayers changed the world Peter Greer's Word of Wisdom: Try new things. Let go of what doesn't serve you and hold tight to the prayer rhythms that draw you closer to God. The goal isn't perfection—it's presence. Jesus, Fill My Heart is a song based on a prayer written by Ryan Skoog in the book, Lead with Prayer. It's a petition asking for God's good gifts of love and peace and wisdom among other things. I got permission from Mr. Skoog to adapt his words and put them to music and this is what came out. My prayer is that each of you will find this prayer useful in connecting with God. (The original prayer is on page 62 of the hardcover edition of Lead with Prayer.)Jesus, Fill My Heart (A Prayer)Verse:Jesus, fill my heart with Your love; fill my soul with Your peace; fill my mind with wisdom from above.Jesus, fill my ears with Your voice; fill my mouth with Your words; fill my eyes with Your compassion.Chorus:May my hands be ever serving You.May my knees bow in surrender, too.May my feet walk in obedience to You.Bridge:Empower me – heart, soul, mind, andstrength – to live for Your glory, Lord.Empower me – heart, soul, mind, andstrength – to live for You, my Friend. ©2025 Mike Neifert

Ryan Skoog is the CEO of Venture, a non-profit that serves war refugees, trafficked people, oppressed children, and the unreached in the most difficult places in the world. Being raised as a “spiritual mutt” in a mission-minded and entrepreneurial household, Ryan began a company alongside Venture, funding the administration of the ministry with the profits, and freeing up the investments of givers to fund church planting and community development projects in unreached places across the globe. Cameron Doolittle is a veteran in the generosity space. He is senior advisor to the Maclellan Foundation, executive director of Practicing the Way, co-founder of Generosity Path, and a founding CEO of Jill's House, a ministry for kids with intellectual disabilities. With a background as a political advisor, Cameron now consults with organizations his family loves, including The Bible Project, Desiring God with John Piper, and many more.  Together with Peter Greer, Ryan and Cameron co-authored the newly released book, “Lead with Prayer” after years of studying how Christian leaders pray. They will share more about their personal stories, what God is doing in the nations through Venture, how “Lead with Prayer” came about, and many insightful keys to prayer and generosity as a great adventure with Christ. Major topics include: The difference between investing in the Kingdom and giving to the Kingdom How prayer is fueling the explosion of the global church Investing financially in prayer as an asset A look into the prayer lives of many church leaders around the world More leadership calls for more prayer time Friendship-first prayer Building prayer “bells” or triggers throughout your day How generosity and prayer work together QUOTES TO REMEMBER “The global church is exploding and it is a sight to behold! We get to live in some incredible times.” Ryan Skoog “What if we just said, this is enough!” Cameron Doolittle “There's something about the number 51. Once You've crossed that rubicon, you're giving more than you're keeping.” Ryan Skoog “There's three reasons people give – to look good, to feel good, or to actually do good, even when it doesn't look good or feel good.” Ryan Skoog quoting Jay Yacov, Economist “You give to feel good or look good, but you invest because you want to see a return on your investment. You want to do good, even if it doesn't look good or feel good.” Ryan Skoog “What if we stood at the feet of the global church and asked them to teach us how to pray?” Ryan Skoog “If prayer is the thing that's fueling what God's doing around the world, then how come we're not talking about it more?” Ryan Skoog “You can't create a culture of prayer without being a person of prayer.” Cameron Doolittle “When Jesus's ministry was the busiest, the scriptures say he withdrew more often, not less.” Ryan Skoog “Whenever you're being generous, you're going to say a lot of noes in order to say some big yeses.” Cameron Doolittle “Prayer develops gratitude. And gratitude is the foundation of generosity.” Ryan Skoog “Prayer is a key to having an adventure of generosity versus just an experience of giving.” Ryan Skoog “Learning to obey the Holy Spirit in your giving opens the opportunity to have an adventure with your Friend Jesus on giving.” Ryan Skoog LINKS FROM THE SHOW Lead with Prayer Hope International (see our interview with founder, Jeff Rutt or CEO, Peter Greer) Venture MacLellan Foundation (see our interview with Director of Generosity, John Cortines) Jill's House Praxis Generosity Path Practicing the Way Generous Church (see our interview with founder Patrick Johnson) International Justice Mission (IJM) Echo (prayer app, Echo+ for ministries) The Finish Line Community Facebook Group The Finish Line Community LinkedIn Group BIBLE REFERENCES FROM THE SHOW Matthew 6:21 | Treasure of the Heart For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.   2 Corinthians 10:4 | Spiritual Warfare For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds.   Acts 3:1 | The Hour of Prayer Now Peter and John were going up to the temple at the hour of prayer, the ninth hour.   John 15:5 | Abide in the Vine I am the vine; you are the branches. Can we just be honest with ourselves and admit that, for most of us, our prayer lives stink? We all know we're supposed to pray. We've read where Paul tells us to pray without ceasing. Maybe we've even tried instilling new habits, only to have them fall apart shortly after we test them out.  It might even feel defeating at this point–as if prayer is just another task we can't work into our chaotic schedules and the regular ups and downs of entrepreneurship. Is it even possible for entrepreneurs to develop a healthy prayer life? And… is it even worth it?Today on the show, Peter Greer is going to help give us some clear guidance around these questions based on the findings of his new book Lead with Prayer that he co wrote with Cameron Doolittle and Ryan Skoog. Peter is a longtime friend of the movement who has been featured on the podcast, the conference, and video series in the past, but over the last three years, he has been researching the spiritual habits of world-changing leaders. And in this episode, he's going to share some of his findings with us so that we can develop prayer rhythms that fit our lives.

But prayer isn't just for the people on the front lines in hard places. It's for us all. We learn from the global church what an intentional prayer life looks like. We talk about wasting our time with Jesus in friendship, tithing our time to the Lord, the allure of chasing influence rather than obedience, the importance of intentionality and creating our own personal liturgy. And we really hit what it looks like to pray through tough times. So join us as we learn from the global church what leading with prayer looks like. Ryan is cofounder and president of VENTURE, a nonprofit that works in the toughest places of the world, serving war refugees, trafficked people, oppressed children, and the unreached. VENTURE has planted thousands of churches that serve in their own communities to rescue girls from trafficking, start farms, and train in microenterprise and feminine hygiene, leading to generational transformation. Ryan co-authored the books Chosen: A 30 Day Devotional and the forthcoming Lead with Prayer. He and his wife Rachel enjoy adventuring with their two ginger headed kids and the newest addition to their family Kyea Sin Thant. Ryan's Book:Lead with PrayerRyan's Recommendations:E.M. After studying the prayer lives of extraordinary leaders around the world, Ryan Skoogs began to identify patterns. These patterns shifted not only the heart and mind of the leader but also the culture around them—in their home, organization, and beyond. As the leader of your home, you must create a culture of prayer that starts with you. In this episode, Ryan shares the practical steps to do just that.      Key Takeaways   Be willing to “waste time” with God.  To start an intentional prayer life, just walk and talk with the Lord.  Twenty minutes of prayer to Jesus each day for eight weeks will change your brain chemistry in ways that are visible on a brain scan.  Where is prayer a line item in your organization's (or family's) budget?  Don't discount the little opportunities where you can be quick to pray.   Ryan Skoog   Ryan Skoog is an entrepreneur, ministry leader, author, world traveler, and adventure dad. He is co-founder and president of VENTURE, a church-planting and community development nonprofit that works in the toughest places of the world, serving war refugees, trafficked people, oppressed children, and the unreached.    Key Quotes   30:06 - "20 minutes of prayer a day, for eight weeks, will change your brain neurons and chemistry so much that you can tell on a brain scan. There's an agnostic neuroscientist that started just measuring prayer and it had to be prayer to Jesus. It wasn't just meditation and mindfulness, sand is soft, no, it is God is love. God is gracious, that kind of focus and prayer. It can change your brain scan so it fires all the parts that are amazing." 39:26 - "Don't discount the little moments throughout the day of stopping and acknowledging God. A kid has a test, let's stop and pray. We have a phrase around here, we want to be quick to pray. I think in creating a culture in your family, being quick to pray about little things quickly, oh, hey, let's pray about that. And then taking 20 seconds to pray about it and making that normal in your family, making that normal that we just talked to God throughout the day has just been a really, really helpful culture."   Links from Today's Conversation   Lead with Prayer: The Spiritual Habits of World-Changing Leaders by Ryan Skoog and others   Connect with dadAWESOME   Make a Donation to dadAWESOME Join the dadAWESOME Prayer Team Receive weekly encouragement by texting "dad" to 651-370-8618

“An intentional prayer life is the nonnegotiable constant of lasting, fruitful Christian life and ministry,” write Ryan Skoog, Peter Greer and Cameron Doolittle in Lead with Prayer. Unfortunately, most Christian leaders report having lackluster prayer lives. A 2005 study by Lifeway Resources found that just 16% of pastors are “very satisfied” with their prayer lives. A 2021 Lifeway study found that 72% percent struggle with consistent personal prayer. Lead with Prayer aims to help Christian leaders narrow the gap between what they aspire to do and what they actually do by showing them how to prioritize prayer, grow in prayerfulness, and build a culture of prayer in their organizations. Those are also the topics I'm talking to Ryan Skoog about in this episode of the Influence Podcast. I'm George P. Wood, executive editor of Influence magazine and your host. Ryan Skoog is cofounder and president of Venture, a Christian ministry to “the least reached and least resourced” parts of the world that partners with “local leaders in those communities to end some of the world's greatest injustices.” ————— This episode of the Influence podcast is brought to you by My Healthy Church, distributors of MEGA Sports Camp. What prayer practices are fueling your impact? That’s the question that was asked of leaders around the world and on this podcast we find out common threads that surfaced that will help us grow deep and go deep in prayer. Ryan Skoog joins us to talk about a new book he’s co-authored with Peter Greer and Cameron Doolittle, Lead with Prayer. Ryan is an entrepreneur starting Fly for Good, Volunteer Card, Yonder Travel Insurance, and the nonprofit Venture.org which helps people do tough things to help people in tough places around the world. Ryan shares that across the board the powerful prayer life of leaders internationally begins with friendship first; wasting time with Jesus like you waste time with a good friend. Being together. Also, praying through hard times, then being intentional about every day prayer, next asking God what’s on His heart, and last the power of praying generational prayers – prayers that we may not see answered in our lifetime but that bless those who will come after us. Prayer works! Prayer changes things. How one choice, of going to church to serve, turned into a legacy of leading people to Jesus. The impact that Tim left his kids as he modeled Kingdom prayer and adventure. The five principles/practices that the global church implements.   Conversation Notes   2:04- Tim explaining the impact of his mother in law passing away and why they decided to continue with their trip to China. 5:45 - Tim and Ryan talking about the times they were apprehended by the police and chased by dogs for putting Christian tracks on locals doorsteps.. "those are some of the adventures that you get to, you know, like, I'll always cherish that with my dad." 8:39 - "the enemy doesn't want dads taking courageous adventures, instilling values in their kids." 08:55 - "the takeaway is or recognize that when you're heading out like this, expect that there's going to be some resistance, that we have an enemy, and if the enemy can stop you before you get started, he's going to do it." 10:17 - "it didn't start he didn't start the gambit by taking us to Mozambique or, you know, a war zone. It started with just let's go serve a church together or let's go. You know, there's a service opportunity, you know, in our church or in our community." 11:14 - Ryan talking about having a good role model when it came to his prayer life and the adventures they went on as a family. 13:39 - "The quick origin is that it came out of asking a question what if what if the global church had something to teach the American church on how to follow Jesus? And instead of us just going and sending, you know, teaching and leadership and all that stuff, what if we sat at their feet and said, Could you teach us?" 14:21 - Explaining "The Five Principles/Practices" that the global church implements. 16:55 - "And that's part of the the idea on the prayer side is what like every believer in the global church that's practicing this, they're almost every day praying for people that don't know Jesus to come to come to Jesus." 19:46 - "And we try to go for the complex and easy and God wants us to do simple and tough and they can't do it." 20:43 - "the concept that you're capable of passing things on. Capable of having a rich history. Capable of having. The next. And the next. And the next." 22:18 - "But that first started with I made his decision that I want to be like my dad, and that was huge. And so I've really tried to take that and say, okay, in all this, I really want my son to want to be like me first." 23:50 - "And it wasn't just one thing that he did, but his consistency over and over and over that that was so impacting and then peppered with adventures. Right. And made it really powerful.... there's a moment there's a season in life for us as dads that the call is one of faithfulness. And it's like hard because you're like, I want to do great things and this and that. Tim 13:07 - Tim talks about his house burning down and leaving Alaska 14:21 - Ryan explaining the legacy his dad imprinted, not only on their family, but to many people their family has encountered after getting saved "...that day was famous in our family.." 16:14 - Ryan taking Tim, his son, and father in law back to the chapel Tim was saved in and writing and praying blessings over each of them. 17:34 - "And the the idea that you, you know, this is really, really important for your kids to get is that they something happened before them and something will happen after them. Generational and that generational thought is so distant from our current generation. It's it's actually a very unique thing because for thousands of years, children grew up realizing that there's a tradition before them and a legacy to give and and to to combat the current crazy narcissism of the day."  18:43 - "whenever I want to instill a value in our kids, we like to travel somewhere and then have a moment but also have an adventure to seal it in." 20:29 - Tim's wife taking their grand daughters to where she was saved in Louisiana. 23:07 - "One of the greatest gifts that my parents and then my dad was able to give me was he wanted to expose me early on to the world, to the needs of the world, to the challenges of the world." "....he did that by taking us to some of the most difficult places in the world." 23:40 - "He never took us to Disneyland, but but he did take us to a refugee camp in Mozambique and, you know, to different slums around the world and difficult areas." 25:11 - One of the coolest things Tim did as a father was he was willing to do what his kids wanted to do.
