[2:06] A plant—based diet (aka vegan diet) is eating all foods except animal products. That means no meat, dairy, eggs or anything that comes from an animals. There are also vegetarians that don’t eat meat but eat eggs and milk. Lacto-vegetarians which don’t eat meat or eggs but consume dairy and then ovo-vegetarians which don’t eat meat or dairy but eat eggs. I know that is a lot of information but all you have to know is that you can have a balanced diet with a plant-based diet and cutting out animal products and we will go over some basics in today’s episodes. My Story of how I went vegan [2:44]Benefits of A Plant-Based Diet [5:32] There are many reasons why someone might choose a plant-based diet. However, we are going to break it down into three of the most popular reasons. One could choose a plant-based lifestyle for their own health, the environment or because of they don’t want to support an industry that tortures animals. There are many reasons to go plant based and health reasons is a huge one. Many studies showing a decreased risk of cardiovascular disease, obesity, many cancers, type 2 diabetes and hypertension. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4073139/ Animal Products such as red meat and dairy are inflammatory5 Ways to Better Your Plant-Based Nutrition and things to pay attention to [7:16]Now as I said in my story, you are going to have to relearn what you know about food. If you are like me, you were raised eating meat so it will take some learning time to transition to a more plant-based diet. Protein [7:42]Protein is just amino acids.Non-essential Amino Acids are proteins that your body makes on its own. You do not have to get these from your diet. Essential Amino acids are proteins that your body cannot make on its own and you need to get them from your diet. There are 9 of them.Complete proteins vs. Incomplete proteinsComplete Proteins are foods that contain all your essential amino acidsFor example, quinoa, Ezekiel bread, hemp seeds, chia seeds, spirulina, nutritional yeast, and soy productsThere are a lot of misconceptions about soy being bad for you but it is not as bad as the media portrays it. Enjoy it in moderation and there are studies that show the benefits.A study about Soy: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5793271/Incomplete Proteins are foods that contain some of the essential amino acids, however you can combine different foods, within the same meal or throughout the day, to get all your essential amino acidsBeans and riceHummus and pitaNut butter and whole wheat breadIron [11:53]Iron deficiency affects 25% of peopleCook with cast iron pots and pans to increase iron intakeIron-rich foods include leafy greens, kale, spinach, swiss chard, lentils and beansTo increase absorption:pair your iron-rich foods with vitamin C rich foods such as strawberries or bell peppersAvoid eating your iron-rich foods in the same meal as your Calcium rich foods such as broccoli or soy products, as it will decrease iron absorptionAvoid drinking tea and coffees during meals with iron rich food as it will decrease iron absorptionB12 [14:52]B12 was once prevalent in produce and natural water supplies. Due to modern sanitation, we no longer gain B12 from these sources. Therefore, we must supplement with fortified foods, such as nutritional yeast, or with B12 supplementsWhen supplementing, most people get the most B12 out of methylated, high-quality brandsOmega-3’s [16:36]Omega-3’s are essential fatty acids that are necessary for your bodyA great source of Omega-3’s is flax seeds or flax seed oil. Also, you can add foods into your diet such as hemp seeds, chia seeds, walnuts and avocadoesThere are supplements available as well that come from an algae sourcesReading Nutrition Labels [18:10]Get used to reading the ingredients, however it becomes easier the more you do itIn America, if you look at the end of the ingredients list, it will list common allergens in bold letters such as dairy and eggs, however it will not show if there is meat in itChallenge of the Week [20:03]Non-Vegans: 28 day vegan Challenge! Reduce or completely eliminate animal products for 28 days! It takes 3 weeks to create a habit as well as detox off of dairy. Make the change and see how good you feel!Already Vegan: This week, try to focus on one area of nutrition that we talked about, whether that be focusing on getting all your amino acids or implementing B12 into your diet. Today we dive deep into the biggest fundamental in health, that is often overlooked: Mindset! Mindset affects your health in massive ways and once we optimize this, everything else will be easier. Find out some common beliefs about health that might be affecting you without even realizing it. It can affect our thoughts, actions and decisions. [1:30] Quote of the week: “Better light a candle than curse the darkness” -Confucius [2:02]This quote is a great lead in to our topic. It describes how we should think about health. Are you cursing the so-called darkness or something you want to change/get rid of in your own body? What is your language around this? Or do you light a candle and look at what you want more of? Main Points:What is health? [2:36]Is it the lack of disease? What is true health?! The Oxford English Dictionary defines health as the absence of diseaseThe World Health Organization (WHO) defines health as “a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.True health is feeling outstanding every day with an ample amount of energy, physically and emotionally!This means that you feel so good that you are able to do the things that you want to do whether that means having enough energy to play with your kids, travel, have success in your business, foster great relationships or whatever you want to do.Health is fundamental and will overflow into all other areas of your lifeAre you looking at your health in terms of what you want to get rid of or at what you want more of? [4:00]Most people look at their health and immediately think about what they want to get rid of. For example: “I want to lose these extra few pounds,” “I want to get rid of my headache,” “I want to stop being so tired all the time,” or maybe you have another health issue that you are trying to get rid ofStart thinking about what you want more of… It is the same as having personal goals.If you had a financial goal, you wouldn’t focus on getting rid of your current income, you would create a goal and create a plan about how to achieve that goal.What do you want more of in your health and life? Do you want more energy? Vibrancy? Happiness? Success? More peaceful sleep? To feel great? These are the goals that you should work towards when thinking about health!Windshield example: When you are driving, where is your focus? There is a reason that 90% of your view is your front windshield and only about 10% of your view is the rearview mirror! Because, in order to get to your destination, you have to be looking forward to what you want. It is the same with health.Your body is an incredibly smart healing machine!! [6:09]I have studied the human body intensely and I am constantly in awe at how the body works.Right now, in this very moment, you have millions of neurons firing, each cell is functioning, your heart is beating, hormones are being released, blood is flowing, your lungs are breathing and if you ate recently, your body is digesting food. We don’t even have to think about all of these things happening, they just do! Your body is incredibly smart and was made perfectly! Have you ever gotten a cut on your hand? What happens? Within a matter of days, it heals and goes back to normal. Do you have to even think about it? No! It just happens. Your body has this incredible ability to heal. So, if your body is that intelligent, why do things go wrong or ‘haywire’? These symptoms are like signs on the road. Your body is telling you to make a change. That something needs to happen. They are pointing you in the right direction to heal! You are your most important healer! Restorative Healing vs. Reorganizational Model [8:04] Now there are two strategies for health. Restorative model is the most common model in healthcare today. It is looking at the symptom as something to get rid of and the main goal is to restore you to the place you were before that event happened. The second model is a reorganizational healing model which is less common. It views symptoms as a means toward change and focuses on optimizing health and connection to one’s body. CEO example—Imagine if you had a company that had steady income for some time and was doing okay. Then one day you come into work and look at your numbers and your company has completely crashed! Numbers have gone way down and at this rate your company won’t be able to sustain itself. You are left with two options. First, you could do whatever you could to get your company to the way it was the previous week when you were doing okay or, your second option, you could strategize and choose a different direction. Which path would you choose? The second option sounds like a better idea, doesn’t it? Why? Because the company crashing is a sign that whatever you were doing before wasn’t working correctly and something needs to change. Why would you want to get to that prior state when the way you were doing things then was what most likely led to that crash. It is the same with health. You can look at your symptoms as a means towards change and make those changes in order to have a more sustainable health in the future. Reactive versus proactive mindset [11:11] Reactive Mindset is reacting to a situation that is already occurring. This is more the model of the current medical system. The current medical model is great in many ways, don’t get me wrong. It is especially great at emergency situations and acute issues. Proactive mindset is taking care of your health before anything else occurs and helps you thrive. A few years back when I was still in chiropractic school, I woke up to a text that no one wants to receive. My sister texted me saying that our mother was having a stroke and was taken to the hospital. I was shocked! It felt like it came out of nowhere and when I went to the hospital, she was not herself. She was talking but you could tell that she wasn’t there. If you talked to her today, she says that she doesn’t remember that time at all. It is very scary to see your mother in that condition. Thankfully, she is fully recovered and thanks to modern medicine, she survived that tragic event. After the stroke, my sister and I kept asking the doctors what caused it and how we can prevent a future stroke. The doctors were unsure of what caused the stroke and because of that, they weren’t sure what to tell us to prevent it. What happened after she left the hospital? They did some follow up scans and told her she is in the clear. Did they teach her how to thrive afterwards? Did they teach her what she needs to be doing differently? In this case, no they didn’t. My sister and I took it into our own hands. We realized that she was drinking diet soda everyday for the last 20 years and made her replace it with a healthier alternative, she changed her workout routine, we changed many things in her life to ensure that she could be in the best health possible and nothing like this would ever happen again! I share this story because our current medical model is incredibly great at reactive care when something goes wrong. And that is how most of us look at health. We don’t really listen to our body until something goes wrong. Instead, being proactive about health can prevent our body from ever having to go to these places. We can maintain and increase our health before something happens so that we can feel great and be there for our family, relationships, business, travel, and all the things you want in your life! How are you going to thrive? What are you going to do and what changes do you want to have? What do you want more of? Do you want to just have an absence of disease until all of a sudden something pops up? Reactive thinking? Or do you want to be proactive and take charge of your health, nourish your body and have more energy and vibrancy than ever? I don’t know about you, but I will take the latter! Challenge of the Week [15:04] This week, you can journal or just say to yourself what you want more of in your life. Create a vision of all the things that you will enjoy more or get to enjoy when your health is in top state Create alarms on your phone or put sticky notes in your bathroom mirror making positive health statements of what you want more of. It is important when doing this to also add because after that statement. For example, “I am healthy and happy because this allows me to be the best parent I can be” or “I function at the highest level of health because then I can enjoy my trip.” Or “I deserve maximum health because it allows me to give to others when I am taken care of” Post your participation of these challenges on social media and use #EYHchallenge so that we can see your great work!
