In this podcast episode, James Maskell interviews Dr. Navaz Habib about the importance of the vagus nerve in healing and overall health. Dr. Habib explains that the vagus nerve plays a critical role in shifting the body from a sympathetic (fight or flight) state to a parasympathetic (rest and digest) state, which is necessary for healing. He emphasizes the importance of creating a safe and supportive environment for patients to feel connected and reduce stress. Dr. Habib also discusses the role of physical trauma, such as head injuries or spinal misalignments, in affecting vagus nerve function. He recommends various strategies to improve vagus nerve tone, including diaphragmatic breathing, gargling, humming and physical exercise. Dr. Habib's new book, Upgrade Your Vagus Nerve, provides further information on these strategies and their impact on overall health. Listen to the full conversation to learn how: The vagus nerve is the organ of unity, connecting all organs and systems in the body. Chronic diseases are diseases of disconnection, both internally and externally. Breathing exercises, such as slow, nasal and diaphragmatic breathing, can help regulate the breath and shift the body into a parasympathetic state. Gargling, humming and vocalization can stimulate the vagus nerve and activate the parasympathetic system. The vagus nerve is a unifying topic for health professionals and can be beneficial for patients of all ages and conditions.

Episode 33 Managing Anxiety and Rediscovering Control in Mind, Body, and Energy Through Simple, Effective Outlets Podcast Relaunch Celebration: Rediscovering Control In a heartfelt relaunch celebration in January 2024, Megan Holly expressed gratitude for the loyal listeners of their podcast, "Taking Flight." With a commitment to providing inspiration and a safe space twice a week, Megan outlined the podcast's mission as a platform for recalibration during life's challenges. The anticipation of exploring new directions in the upcoming season was also teased. Managing Anxiety: Megan's Personal Strategies Opening up about their ongoing battle with anxiety, Megan shared personal insights into managing this pervasive challenge. Stressing that anxiety manifests in various forms, from excitement to overwhelm, Megan, while not a therapist, offered five unconventional yet effective strategies for maintaining calmness and confidence. Gargling and Humming for Stress Relief Megan delved into the benefits of gargling and humming, practices believed to stimulate the vagus nerve and induce relaxation. Detailing their routine, Megan explained how incorporating deep breathing, gargling, and humming in the shower can serve as a preventative measure or countermeasure against stress, tension, and brain fog, emphasizing that no specific tune or sound is required. Humming and Singing for Stress Relief The podcast explored the therapeutic potential of humming and singing in the shower to release stress and energize the body. While acknowledging a learning curve, Megan encouraged listeners to embrace this practice during moments of anxiety or stress, highlighting its long-term benefits once mastered. Brain Dump Technique for Mind Clearing and Anxiety Management Megan underscored the importance of a daily brain dump to clear mental clutter. By jotting down tasks and reminders, Megan outlined how this practice aids in clearer thinking and better sleep. Additionally, they shared their use of a notebook for more extended brain dumps and setting alarms for crucial meetings, attributing these methods to enhanced anxiety management. Movement for Mental Health: Strategies and Reminders Recognizing the pivotal role of physical movement in energy release and anxiety prevention, Megan shared personal strategies such as vigorous hand shaking, hourly stretching, and impromptu dance parties. The ongoing effort to incorporate intentional movement into their routine was highlighted as a key aspect of mental health maintenance. Stress-Relief Techniques: Acrylic Markers and Coloring Books Megan advocated for diverse stress-relief techniques, including stress balls, doodling, and coloring. Encouraging individuals to find what works best for them, Megan specifically endorsed the therapeutic benefits of acrylic paint markers for relaxation and mindfulness. Reframing Anxiety: A Positive Perspective The podcast engaged in a thoughtful discussion on the nature of anxiety, viewing it as a natural response to excitement or stress. Megan challenged the conventional negative perception of anxiety, proposing that it could signify deep caring or excitement about certain aspects of life. Emphasizing the importance of changing our relationship with anxiety, Megan encouraged listeners to identify it as distinct and not inherently threatening. Come be a part of my communities! Perfect Practice

Today, Sachin discusses the vagus nerve with Dr. Navaz Habib. Dr. Habib has written the book, Activate Your Vagus Nerve. He continues to learn about the vagus nerve and its role in supporting the parasympathetic nervous system that leads to healing inflammation and associated ills. Sachin and Navaz cover the differences between the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems and how to optimize the parasympathetic nervous system by stimulating the vagus nerve. Listen in to learn of some great tools for activating the vagus nerve in your patients or yourself.   Key Takeaways: [1:03] Sachin welcomes listeners to Perfect Practice. Today, Sachin is speaking with Dr. Navaz Habib. Sachin introduces Navaz and thanks him for joining the podcast.   [2:08] Navaz credits Sachin for bringing him into the realm of functional medicine.   [2:44] In 2019, Navas released his book, Activate Your Vagus Nerve. He received a lot of supportive feedback. Since that time, Navaz has learned that he knows very little about the vagus nerve. The more you think you know, the more you realize you don't. Navaz has been learning more every day.   [3:33] Navaz has learned that the vagus nerve … controls things in the same way that other nerves do. But it is … bridging the gap … in … understanding how the body functions … and how the brain has a way to control and support how the immune system and inflammation function within the body.   [5:01] Our lifestyles have changed over the last 50 years. We've gone from being outdoors taking care of our land to sitting indoors, eating processed food. Our bodies haven't had the ability to adapt to these changes of being indoors, less active, and constantly comfortable. That has created an opportunity for our bodies to be primed for an inflammatory response.   [6:45] The autonomic nervous system sends signals from the brain to the body and from the body to the brain. The brain sends signals to areas of the body that need attention and shifts our state in either a sympathetic or parasympathetic direction. The sympathetic side of the nervous system is “fight or flight.” The parasympathetic side is the “rest and digest (& recovery)” system.   [8:44] The parasympathetic nervous system, mediated by the vagus nerve, is in control when we are not under direct threat. The vagus nerve is the only nerve that goes to essentially every organ within the thorax and abdomen. It dictates where the blood will flow and what state our body is in. That drives inflammation.   [9:59] Eighty-one percent of the information on the vagus nerve is afferent (sensory) information from the body to the brain. The sensory information is not the same as the traditional five senses.   [11:01] Sachin compares stimulating the vagus nerve to pushing a button that heals every cell, organ, tissue, and system in your body simultaneously. It's too good to believe because it's simple.   [11:42] Navaz explains why we need to shift our state to parasympathetic. We are in a state of sympathetic overdrive all the time, stimulated by our screens for hours on end. We need our gaze to be wider, as it would be out in nature if we were farming or walking. One way to shift your state is to go outside and shift your gaze. Get off your computer.   [12:42] Your breath also influences your state. Are you breathing effectively or ineffectively? Put one hand on your belly and one on your chest. Take a deep breath. Which hand moves first? They should both move, but the hand on your belly should move first. That's a sign that you're breathing using your diaphragm and you are likely not in a state of stress.   [13:34] If you're stressed out and you're in an emotional situation, somebody will say, ‘Take a deep breath,' and that will help you get into a calmer zone where you start to think a little bit more clearly and that's shifting you to parasympathetic. Rest, digest, recover and think more clearly during that state. Breath is the key to all of this.   [15:45] Research shows that you shouldn't be either sitting or standing too long. Postural dysfunction will occur whether you are sitting for six hours or standing for six hours. Postural dysfunction creates local inflammation. The vagus nerve alerts the brain of that inflammation. Navaz gives his hypothesis that it's best to shift between sitting and standing.   [17:27] Navaz offers ideas for stimulating the vagus nerve. Make breathing a little more challenging and teach yourself to breathe through your diaphragm even when you're under stress. Gargling, humming, deep breathing exercises, anything that helps activate the vocal cords.   [17:54] Nineteen percent of the information flowing through the vagus nerve consists of motor signals flowing from the brain stem to muscles, such as the pharyngeal and laryngeal muscles that maintain a patent open airway in the back of the throat and tensioning and lengthening the vocal cords to create pitch and tone.   [19:03] Navaz explains why you might shed tears when you gargle, and how that demonstrates a parasympathetic state! He tells of the benefits of gargling. It creates hormetic stress and resilience.   [21:03] Laughing helps the function of the vagus nerve like gargling and it has a social aspect, as well. Social connection supports health.   [22:13] Texting and email have interfered with meeting people. Being in the room with people builds connection.   [24:04] Some people with health challenges need an extra push to stimulate their vagus nerve. Navaz uses tools such as the gammaCore Sapphire from ElectroCore to stimulate the vagus nerve electrically and significantly improve the pain from migraine and cluster headaches. Vagus nerve stimulation is often the missing piece to get inflammation down and under control.   [29:57] Navaz says the vagus nerve stimulation via the gammaCore SapphireTM is entirely pain-free. It's very high-frequency and very low-voltage. It doesn't create muscle contraction. However, if you have an implanted metal device such as a pacemaker or cervical spine implant, above the shoulders, this device is not recommended.   [31:49] The gammaCore SapphireTM has not been studied on children in research. The inventor of the device used it on his eight-year-old daughter for eczema with good results but it has not been studied.   [33:12] Navaz had an elite skater patient. She had had many falls, some resulting in concussions. She had suffered from eating disorders when young and came to Dr. Navaz with digestive issues, mild depression, and Hashimoto's. Dr. Navaz tried the functional medicine approach and there were some small changes. The patient suffered another concussion.   [34:11] Dr. Navaz had her use the gammaCore SapphireTM during recovery. She noticed that this was the quickest she had ever rebounded from a head injury. She started noticing improvements in her digestion. Her pain was better. Her mood and her sleep shifted. She also came out of her depression. She credits all these changes to the healing of her inflammation.   [37:54] Dr. Navaz shares links for more information.   [38:39] Sachin thanks his friend Dr. Navaz Habib for joining the podcast today. "Guess What I'm Gargling" is a game AJ pitched to play on the air, less than 24 hours after the boss emailed the air staff about being more responsible with liquids in the studios. Either the game is very hard, or AJ didn't do it correctly, because no one was able to guess the song he was trying to sing. (0:00)  Ashley has been keeping a sharp eye on the weather forecast for Saturday, since that's the date of her wedding. Chaz and AJ asked how she's been handling the week, and her answer sounded a little like word vomit, mixed with all her anxiety. (14:50) Bruce Springsteen's Mohegan Sun show is sold out, and tickets on secondary sites are going for insane prices. Chaz and AJ were graciously offered a single pair of tickets to the show by Tom Cantone, the ONLY pair of tickets being given away for this show, anywhere. Tom and Mohegan Sun agreed to do this once they heard it would help local veterans, at the Stand Up for Vets event this Friday. (38:09)

The answer very well might make you gargle inordinately high water levels in an abandoned camp cabin outhouse or don one of the worst Freddy or Jason costumes ever seen on screen...but was it worth watching? Let's face it – it seems inevitable to get COVID at this point, especially with the Omicron variant. Although COVID became a reality in the United States in March 2020, it actually took two years for me and my family to get it. Still, I'm thankful it was the Omicron variant and not the previous variants that seemed a lot harsher.   In this episode, I'm sharing with you my journey through COVID as well as the protocol I followed to manage and help alleviate our symptoms. Overall, I'm thankful that my family and I just had mild symptoms and that we have the tools to get over it.   I just would like to say, too, that 98% of the protocol I'm sharing with you today was from my functional nutritionist Katie Braswell, who was here on the podcast back in Episode 04 talking all about thyroid health. Whatever I'm sharing here is in no way medical advice but just a personal protocol that I chose to follow. These are things I noticed were very beneficial, and that worked for me. Old Mole Reading List
The Pull of the Stars by Emma Donoghue

Old Mole Reading List

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 19, 2020

The influenza pandemic of 1918 killed more people than the First World War—an estimated 3 to 6 percent of the human race. This quote from the author’s note about her novel The Pull of the Stars set the scene for this gripping and beautiful  book. Many of you will know about Emma Donoghue because of her novel, Room, which was made into a movie. I was very impressed with that novel, but honestly have found other of her novels even more impressive. Donoghue is a writer of immense talent and a huge heart. There are three main characters in this novel: a young nurse, Julia Powers, who works in a severely understaffed hospital in Dublin, where for three days she finds herself in charge of a unit for pregnant women who have come down with the dreaded flu, and thus have to be isolated from the other pregnant women. Bridie Sweeny, who is an even younger volunteer helper, and who finds herself quite suddenly in the middle of a rather chaotic scene with no training, but a deep need to be of service. And, finally, a rarity for the times, a woman Dr. Kathleen Lynn who is rumored to be a Sinn Fein rebel on the run from the police.Nurse Powers can serve in the ward because she has already had the flu and is therefore immune.  The novel begins with her on her way to work, part way by bike and then by tram.Children carrying suitcases were filing into the train station as we swung past, being sent down the country in hopes they’d be safe. But from what I could gather, the plague was general all over Ireland. The spectre had a dozen names: the great flu, khaki flu, blue flu, black flu, the grippe, or the grip…(That word always made me think of a heavy hand landing on one’s shoulder  and gripping it hard). The malady, some called it euphemistically. Or the war sickness, on the assumption that it must somehow be a side effect of four years of slaughter, a poison brewed in the trenches or spread by all this hurly-burly and milling about across the globe. The chapters of the book are related to the course of the disease, Red, Brown, Blue, Black.Well, I said, it starts with a light red you might mistake for a healthy flush. If the patient gets worse, her cheeks go rather mahogany. (I thought of the turning of the leaves in autumn.) In a more severe case, the brown might be followed by lavender in the lips. Cheeks and ears and even fingertips can become quite blue as the patient’s starved of air….Bridie Sweeny asked, Is blue as far as it goes?I shook my head. I’ve seen it darken to violet, purple, until they’re quite black in the face. Most of the book is taken up with the particular stories of the three or four pregnant women who are isolated together in the small makeshift ward. While the nurses deal immediately with the pain and suffering of the patients, they have very little power, unable to administer  pain medications without the direct order of a physician, and not even allowed to use the medical equipment at hand. Dr. Lyon is a rare exception in that she tells Nurse Powers that she can use her own judgment in administering aspirin  and even opiates.Although this is not a political novel, the asides on  the Sinn Feiners are perceptive and clearly show Donoghue’s  sympathies.  Dr. Kathleen Lynn’s character is based on a real life doctor, described by one of the the cynical orderlies as  “a vicar’s daughter from Mayo gone astray—a socialist, suffragette, anarchist firebrand.” In spite of the severe shortage of doctors in the hospital, during one of the times of greatest need and chaos, she is summarily arrested and taken in chains from the hospital.I learned a lot about maternity from this superbly crafted work and a lot about the sexism in the medical profession which, while somewhat improved  these days, is still very much with us..Nurse Powers notes the ridiculous methods of prevention and alleged cures by the ignorant, not so unlike certain idiot’s responses to today’s covid. One young patient finds it hard to believe she has contracted the flu since she has been so careful. “Gargling with cider vinegar and drinking it to.”Some placed their trust in treacle to ward off the flu, others in rhubarb, as if there had to be one household substance that could save us all. I’d even met fools who credited their safety to the wearing of red. Next we’ll be hearing of drinking bleach as a cure. The compassion and wisdom of Emma Donoghue shines forth in this novel, and while much of it is sad, there are also many moments of joy and bravery.  One of the pregnant women had been living in a Catholic home for unwed mothers, and Bridie also has been raised in a Catholic orphanage. Nurse Powers learns that a woman who is cared for in one of these homes is expected to stay and work for a year after the birth of her child as payback for being allowed to be in the home during her pregnancy. I puzzled it through. So for the crime of falling pregnant, Honor White was lodging in a charitable institution where tending her baby and those of other women was the punishment; she owed the nuns a full year of her life to repay what they were spending for imprisoning her for that year. It had a bizarre, circular logic. And at the end of that year, the women were not allowed to take their babies with them when they left. Emma Donoghue is a giant among writers. I have read three other of her novels since reading The Pull of the Stars; each is utterly different from the other except for the power of her prose and the acuity of her mind. This is a novel you really need to read.

What is the vagus nerve and what are some simple strategies that we can do to activate it? Get a load of some really amazing information from Activate Your Vagus Nerve author, Dr. Navaz Habib. Enjoy! You can find all the info and links about this episode at https://holisticwellness.ca/episode51. Topics Discussed in this Episode: The vagus nerve Some common signs of vagus nerve dysfunction. The effect of stress on the vagus nerve The four major functions of the vagus nerve Strategies and tips to activate the vagus nerve Where sleep and digestion come into play Autoimmune conditions Key Takeaways: If you have poor vagus nerve function, you will experience poor digestion, inflammation, IBS, issues of liver detoxification, even autoimmunity. 12 to 24 hours after you eat a meal, you should be eventually releasing the waste of that meal. Optimally, around 16 hours is the best amount of time. When you don’t have a gallbladder, what’s actually going on is you’re living is going to be extra stressed in being able to push out bile and get toxins out of the body but help to absorb the fats. The four major functions of the vagus nerve: Afferent function Parasympathetic function Motor functions Sensory function to a portion of the ear One of the tools that you can use to see if the vagus nerve isn’t working well is the tone of voice. If you know somebody that has a very monotonous voice and they aren’t able to raise pitch or go up and down with their voice, then that is a sign that the signaling in the vagus nerve is actually quite poor because the muscles aren’t being used correctly. We can actually use auricular acupuncture to treat vagus nerve dysfunction. Gargling is a great tool for activating the vagus nerve. But you have to gargle the right way, up to the point that you tear up. If you’re not able to tear out of our eyes, you’re probably not activating the nuclei inside the brain stem of vagus enough. Heart rate variability is actually a direct sign of vagus nerve function. People that sleep on their right side tend to have higher heart rate variability and tend to be better nose breathers. Action Steps: Monitor your bowel transit time. If it’s too fast or too slow, that’s a sign that the vagus nerve is not doing its job correctly. Get auricular acupuncture treatment to stimulate vagus nerve activity. Practice gargling every morning and evening, in the right way. Make sure that you breathe through your nose, not through your mouth. Try using Breathe Right strips or a mouth tape. Make sure that you chew your food very well and that you’re not eating under stressed circumstances. Go away from the stressful environment of your desk or your work station and get out and do something a little bit different. Be in a calm, relaxed environment. Before you eat, do some humming or chanting or some deep breathing exercises to help activate the vagus nerve.   Navaz said: “What the vagus nerve really is, is the major connection between the gut and all of the organs inside our body directly to our brain. It is the gut-brain axis… It is essentially the controlling pathway by which our body is able to recover, rest, digest, and actually function optimally.” “You are what you eat, digest, absorb, and don’t eliminate… If you’re not absorbing it, it’s not going to get into your body, it’s going to get into your cells, and then it’s not doing the job that it needs to do.”   Thanks for listening!   Important Announcements:   SIGN UP by tonight (March 5th, 2019) to Access the Exclusive Hormone Masterclass.   If you have any questions, connect with me over on Instagram, @holisticwellnessfoodie.
