Welcome to Parenting Kids and Dogs 101, a limited series podcast for parents who live with kids and dogs, or plan to. I'm your host, Michelle Stern, the founder of Pooch Parenting. I'm not just a certified professional dog trainer and former teacher, I'm a mom too. In each episode of this series, I hope you'll feel like I'm chatting with you, one parent to another, about life with kids and dogs, answering common questions my clients ask me, and giving you simple solutions to make your life easier and safer.I hope you'll subscribe and join me for the whole series, and don't forget to grab the accompanying workbook at https://poochparenting.net/podcastworkbook/In Episode 3, I talk about some common signs that your dog is stressed or anxious around children? Most parents are not fluent in dog body language - why would you be?Some common body language in dogs may not look like communication - so it's easy to missCommon behaviors that dogs use to communicate include: yawn, paw lift, look away, lip lick. All of these indicate stress or discomfortOther signs of tension include ears that are back towards the head, a tight, closed mouth, a low tail and a stiff bodyA common misconception is that dogs often lay down and show us their belly because they want to be petted. Unfortunately, this posture often means the opposite. The dog is hoping that if they are still that we will just go away. How do you know then when your dog really wants a belly rub? She will approach you with a soft, wiggly body and offer herself for affection. Some dogs walk away or hide when they are uncomfortable around kidsOther dogs approach us, as if asking for support. They may hide behind our legs or sit behind our body.We need to teach children to respect dogs - one easy way to do this is to have the kids invite the dog over for attention instead of approaching the dog directly. This gives the dog the opportunity to give consent for the interaction or opt outParenting kids and dogs is actually very similar!Thank you for listening! It's for the parent who lies awake wondering if they did enough. For the artist, the leader, the healer, the helper… who, even in the applause, hears the whisper of inadequacy. This is not a space to strive or fix. It's a space to be. To sit in the truth that you are already whole. That you were never meant to carry the weight of saving the world alone. This meditation holds you between two truths—the longing to do more and the knowing that you've already done enough. The Heart of the Practice:From a Buddhist lens, this meditation rests in what's often called the Middle Way. It is the space between indulgence and denial, between the ego's hunger and the heart's silence. In the Zen tradition, the Middle Way is not a compromise—it's a complete letting go of the need to grasp either extreme. This practice was born from a deep personal truth. Whether you're a rock star or a school teacher, a politician or a quiet carer—if you carry any degree of authenticity and humility, there will always be a sense that more could be done. That someone, somewhere, needs more of you. That you're still not quite enough. This meditation invites you to stop chasing that shadow. It reminds you that being alive, aware, and honest is already more than enough. Why This Meditation Matters:Speaks directly to the modern ache of “never enough”Helps you hold both the striving self and the silent witness with compassionTeaches the power of not choosing sides between ego and emptinessProvides a space for deep nervous system release and emotional softeningInspired by ancient Zen teachings, yet deeply grounded in everyday lifeAccessible for those in any life situation—no background in Buddhism requiredWhat You'll Experience:A guided settling into the breath and bodyA gentle witnessing of the “small mind” that wants to prove itselfA compassionate resting in the “big mind” that wants nothing at allA powerful affirmation of enoughnessSilence that heals not by effort, but by presenceBenefits of This Practice:Reduced emotional overwhelm and performance pressureIncreased sense of inner worth and self-compassionReconnection with your quiet centre of peace and presenceA new relationship with both ambition and acceptanceLong-term inner stability, especially in high-responsibility livesYou are not here to be perfect. You are here to be whole.Sit with me in the middle. You'll find yourself again.

Today's episode is covering a couple of different topics that are important to me, especially as I'm currently navigating perimenopause!I feel like I'm in the ‘thick of it' with perimenopause, and am really struggling with certain changes. Lately, I just don't recognize my body. Sure, my body *looks* fine, and it could all just be in my head. But..I feel like my muscle is leaving my body, deteriorating, and things are changing in ways I wasn't quite prepared for.I've learned that being proactive with my health is incredibly important - I'm not going to sit around and wait for a medical provider to tell me when they *think* I'm in perimenopause! As always, I'm adjusting and pivoting where I need to on this journey. There are a few things I have been doing, BUT, I wish I would have prioritized even more before perimenopause.I'll be sharing more about why prioritizing protein and building muscle matters (regardless of whether you're in perimenopause or not), why energy balance is crucial and can vary SO much per person, how macronutrient storage, gut health, and metabolism play a significant role in the body's ability to utilize energy, and more. The truth of the matter is, if nothing changes, we ARE going to change - whether we like it or not.My goal is to be as transparent as possible with what I'm sharing here; I hope this episode gives you a glimpse into what my perimenopause journey has been like so far, and what I plan to do going forward. I've learned that the more you know what to focus on + put into practice when it comes to your health, the better!!In today's episode, we cover:My experience with perimenopause so far + things I wish I would have focused on soonerThe benefits of protein during perimenopause (and beyond)What the energy balance process looks likeHow macronutrients (aka macros) are stored in the bodyA breakdown of energy expenditure What happens to your skeletal muscle + adipose tissue as you ageThings I'm implementing NOW to support me in perimenopauseLinks/Resources:Check out Winona1st Phorm Clear ProteinJoin FIT CLUB, my monthly membership with workouts you can do at home or the gymPRIVATE COACHING is my 1:1 program (choose 3 or 6 month option)Connect with me on Instagram @kristycastillofit and @unfuckyourfitnesspodcast so we can keep this conversation going-be sure to tag me in your posts and stories!Join my FREE Facebook group, Unf*ck Your FitnessClick HERE for my favorite fitness & life things!

In today's episode, I discuss the emotional experiences that are magnified during the holidays and the extremes of navigating the healing process. I invite you to sit with me for a few moments while I lead a meditation to soothe emotional triggers and provide a pillow of support. It's a potent time of the year and I want to stick with you on this journey back to yourself.  First, I guide you through how to find a comfortable position and begin to connect with your body. What does your breath feel like? Allow physical touch as you bring attention to all parts of yourself. From there, start to notice the sensations and vibrations throughout your electric body. Where do you feel tingling? When you bring attention to a part of your body, you can understand what's happening in that part of the body. This light body is your vital life force. As you are present in your light body, I share a visualization technique to encapsulate your earth body with a golden light. Then, slowly acknowledge an emotional trigger as you release it from the heart. Can your golden light flow into the heart, clearing energy with warmth and ease? You have the power to be present with your feelings and care for them.I'm thinking about you, the Vitally You community, with gratitude, respect, and compassion. No matter what you are going through, I hope you feel supported and held. Listen to this episode for a meditation that will guide you into a container of compassion. In 1 Corinthians 11:3 Paul reminds his Jewish readers, who are monotheists, of the importance of unity. Three times he points to independent elements that together make up one unit. The image he uses is that of the parts of the body that, united, make up one whole body:Believers-and-Christ are united in one spiritual bodyA wife-and-husband are united in one fleshSon-and-Father are united in the Godhead. He states his main idea in the first line of verse 3, and then adds two subordinate parallel images to illustrate it. In his reference to the parts that make up the body Paul challenges the reader to answer the question, Just who is “every man”?“Every man” is every believer – every man and every woman who is a Christian. This image is parallel to the one Paul uses in Ephesians 5:23: “Christ is the head of the church.”1 Corinthians 11:3:  Christ is the head of every manEphesians 5:23b:     Christ is the head of the churchAn extraordinary responsePaul begins his response to those who did not hold to the tradition he had taught the Corinthians with some word play. Usually a “play on words” has an extra  element in it that draws attention to the fact that something extraordinary is being said, even though ordinary words may be used.In 1 Corinthians 11:3, Paul uses “every man” in Greek to stand for “every person – male or female.” Writing “every man” he makes a gentle play on words to make a point: Do some of you want to focus only on what a man is free to do in Christ? Not I. I will focus on every man in Christ because I want you to focus on what every person – male or female – is free to do in Christ!GO DEEPER

Have you ever been curious of what a vegan plant-based diet is?  Or maybe you already live that way but want to optimize your nutrition!  We are going to go over the main obstacles many people have and misconceptions! [1:21] Quote of the week: “People eat meat and think they will become as strong  as an ox forgetting that the ox eats grass.” -Pino CarusoMany people think you cannot become strong and healthy on a plant-based diet, but today we are going to show you 5 ways that you can! Receive your complementary Plant-Based Nutrition Guide by Dr. Michelle Green DC at https://www.enhanceyourhealth.net/plantbasedguide Main Points:What is a plant-based diet? [2:06] A plant—based diet (aka vegan diet) is eating all foods except animal products. That means no meat, dairy, eggs or anything that comes from an animals.  There are also vegetarians that don’t eat meat but eat eggs and milk.  Lacto-vegetarians which don’t eat meat or eggs but consume dairy and then ovo-vegetarians which don’t eat meat or dairy but eat eggs.  I know that is a lot of information but all you have to know is that you can have a balanced diet with a plant-based diet and cutting out animal products and we will go over some basics in today’s episodes. My Story of how I went vegan [2:44]Benefits of A Plant-Based Diet [5:32] There are many reasons why someone might choose a plant-based diet. However, we are going to break it down into three of the most popular reasons.  One could choose a plant-based lifestyle for their own health, the environment or because of they don’t want to support an industry that tortures animals.  There are many reasons to go plant based and health reasons is a huge one. Many studies showing a decreased risk of cardiovascular disease, obesity, many cancers, type 2 diabetes and hypertension. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4073139/ Animal Products such as red meat and dairy are inflammatory5 Ways to Better Your Plant-Based Nutrition and things to pay attention to [7:16]Now as I said in my story, you are going to have to relearn what you know about food. If you are like me, you were raised eating meat so it will take some learning time to transition to a more plant-based diet.  Protein [7:42]Protein is just amino acids.Non-essential Amino Acids are proteins that your body makes on its own. In this episode, two stories highlight significant work to build supportive environments for Native people to heal and thrive. Kwe Pack is a spectacular group of Native women supporting each other to run long-distance trail races. Kwe Pack has been featured on Good Morning America, ESPN, Sports Illustrated, and Oprah Winfrey’s World Vision Tour.  This group encourages each other to draw on their inner strength; to heal and flourish in all areas of their lives. We also talk with hosts Leah and Cole’s brother Bryce Premo (Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe) about how facing his own struggles with depression and anxiety brought him tools that he now shares with others in his work in mental health advocacy and suicide prevention.  As a youth leader at the Division of Indian Work, a Safe Talk presenter, and Sober House manager, Bryce explains how helping create supportive environments for others is the best medicine for himself. Sermon NotesIt is so easy to forget how temporary this life is. We tend to live as if nothing will ever change, as if life will keep going as it always has. We think we will always have tomorrow. But every now and then, reality breaks through and we see our lives for what they are: a fleeting moment. The Christian gospel tells us that this fleeting life on earth is not our final end. If we are in Christ, we have a glorious destiny. Our descendants may forget us in this life, but God will not forget us in the world to come. Followers of Christ receive the hope of eternal life. This future hope gives us perspective on this life and its frailties and suffering. This future hope gives us a destiny beyond imagination that empowers us to move forward in the service of Christ. As Christians we should balance a realistic assessment of our human frailties with the honor that Christ gives us now and after death. When we do this, we will hold fast to faith in Christ and receive the salvation that God has offered in Him.I. In verse 1 The present earthly body is contrasted with the resurrection bodyA. The apostle began with a statement of confidence. We know that certain things are true.1. 2 Cor 5:1 briefly summarizes what Paul had earlier written in 1 Corinthians 15 about the nature of the resurrection body. The confident assertion, we know, was based on the argument set forth in 1 Cor 15.B. We know that the temporary physical body is being destroyed.1. Paul had referred to his mortal body (4:10-11) as “wasting away” (4:16). Now he compared his body to a warn-out on the earth tent soon to be destroyed. 2. In Christ’s incarnate body He tabernacled or tented among us John 1:14. This is why the eternal perspective (2 Cor 4:17) should be maintained.C. We know that the physical body will be replaced by a permanent resurrected body. 1. The picture is living in a temporary tent while waiting for house to be built. The physical body is the temporary tent. The resurrected body is the permanent house.2. An earthly body is temporary, a heavenly body is eternal.D. Paul described the building from God as an eternal house in heaven.1. Paul is referring to the future resurrected bodies of believers, 2. The reference to the heavenly body as a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands is reminiscent of Jesus’ description of His own resurrection body as a temple not made by man’s hands (Mark 14:58).3. Paul is not addressing the intermediate state. In fact Scripture teaches very little about the intermediate state. “Absent with the body is to be present with the Lord.” V, 8II. For indeed 2-3A. In this house we groan1. In this earthly body we groan because of the burdens of life.2. Groan usually referred to pain and agony. Paul had in mind the longing that believers experience when they compare their present existence with their condition when Christ returns. 3. In verses 3-5 Paul explained why we groan for the heavenly dwelling.B. In this house we long to be clothed with our dwelling from heaven1. Our dwelling from heaven is dwelling place which is from heaven2. The suffering and pain of life in this world causes tho
