Ryan Frederick and Paul Fontaine are back to talk about the week that was and is to come in the world of MMA. A story that was starting to break as the guys recorded is that there will be no fans or media members at the Apex this coming weekend for the ESPN+ show headlined by Mackenzie Dern and Xiaonan Yan in a strawweight fight. The reasons are unknown at this time but more should come out as the week progresses. Before getting into that, the guys talk about the stunning debut of Raul Rojas Jr, the 17 year old who won a UFC contract on Dana White's Contender Series this past week. They then go over a few of the non-UFC shows in a busy upcoming week in MMA including One FC's second show on Amazon Prime featuring Angela Lee in the main event. They then preview a deep UFC card from the Apex with a lot of familiar names and Ryan gives his 3 fights to watch while picks 3 fights that you should be betting on this week. They close off with a busy slate of news including Conor McGregor still not being tested by USADA for some reason, a couple of UFC fighters who were and got suspended and the return of John Hathaway who has not fought since 2014.  Join the Patreon for just $5.00 per month here: https://www.patreon.com/fightgamemedia Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/fightgamemedia Join our Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1958473677605950 Follow our Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/fightgamemedia Subscribe to our YouTube Page: https://www.youtube.com/c/FightGameMedia Follow us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/fightgamemedia Learn more about your ad choices. Write That Down! “That's so Montreal—On pro wrestling's ‘reality complex'”

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 8, 2022 62:19

Modern pro wrestling's backstage drama has become a hotter topic than the wrestling itself. Today's fans crave “reality” in their wrestling, something from the news to attach to the story that's already there, the one presented by the wrestling company. Once again, “Reality” is in, and somewhat similar to how it was 25 years ago, when the Montreal Screwjob happened, when the kayfabe curtain came down off the rails and pro wrestling changed completely, and we—both the industry and the fans—became more fixated on what was fact or fiction, what the boundaries were. “What really happened?” “What did so-and-so do for that to happen?” People were skipping the entree for more tea. Modern Society sips on gossip all day. CM Punk? The AEW media scrum? The melee? “That's so Montreal.” That's what Fumi Saito and Justin Knipper call it now; an adjective. It's shorthand for saying “this type of pro wrestling is, intentionally or not, blending objective reality with storyline fiction.” Join the Patreon for just $5.00 per month here: https://www.patreon.com/fightgamemedia Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/fightgamemedia Join our Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1958473677605950 Follow our Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/fightgamemedia Subscribe to our YouTube Page: https://www.youtube.com/c/FightGameMedia Follow us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/fightgamemedia Learn more about your ad choices. Ryan Frederick and Paul Fontaine are back to talk about the week that was an is to come in the world of MMA. Other than the shows, it was kind of a slow news week so in the "We Have to Talk About" segment, Paul updates everyone on what's going on with his son and has a special message about all the support he and his family have received over the last week. They then go over a fun UFC debut in France which featured UFC booking their hometown fighters much better than WWE did for their UK show, including Cyril Gane scoring a big KO win in the main event. They then preview a somewhat lackluster UFC 279 pay per view that may end the UFC's sellout streak as it's a rare PPV without a title fight as Nate Diaz fights for the last time under his current contract against the unbeaten Khamzat Chimaev. Former interim lightweight champion Tony Ferguson moves up to welterwight to face Li Jingliang and hopes to end a brutal losing streak he's been on the last couple of years in the co-main. Ryan had internet issues for the last portion of the show and we apologize for the technical difficulties but Paul finished off by quickly going over the news of the week. Ryan Frederick and Paul Fontaine are back to go over the week that was and is to come in the world of MMA on the latest episode of In the Clinch. There was no UFC this past week so the guys watched One FC on Prime Video 1, featuring Demetrious Johnson winning the ONE flyweight title over Adriano Moraes. The guys share their thoughts on the fight and the show in general and in our "We Have to Talk About" segment, they go over the trade from four years ago which brought Johnson to ONE and sent Ben Askren to UFC and speculate on who won it. They read some thoughts from the Twitterverse as well. Ryan came up with three questions for the month of the September and the last quarter of 2022 including which fights he and Paul are most looking forward to over the rest of the year. And then they went over UFC Paris, which is pretty much a two fight show with former champions in the main and co-main event squaring off against top contenders with Cyril Gane facing Tai Tuivasa and Robert Whittaker vs Marvin Vettori. Both fights have title implications and Ryan goes over them all as well as previewing the rest of the card. They close off the show by going over the news of the week including Nick Diaz getting back on Twitter and looking to fight again as well as some big fight announcements taking us through the end of the year.
