It tells the story of Ed Farhat aka The Sheik and how this veteran, family-man, and businessman became wrestling's most feared villain! Brian explains how he pieced together The Sheik's story given his whole life was a complete mystery shrouded in kayfabe until his dying days. Brian chronicles the Sheik's wrestling start, his early matches, how and when he morphed into his character, his feud with Bruno Sammartino, what inspired him to start and run his own territory in Detroit, and how he was able to go years without losing! He talks about The Sheik's promotional war against Dick The Bruiser in Detroit, his impact in Japan during the 70s with Giant Baba's All Japan, his resurgence in the 90s at FMW, the fire match that nearly killed him, his time working for Vince McMahon Sr., and his last matches tagging with his nephew and protégé Sabu. Fumi and Justin began their profile series on “Mr. Puroresu” himself, Genichiro Tenryu. In Part One, they went over Tenryu starting sumo at 14, then transitioning to Giant Baba's AJPW a decade later. They also detailed Tenryu's early career in the US, teaming with Billy Robinson and Jumbo Tsuruta, Tenryu's legendary rivalry with Riki Choshu and the importance of their 2/21/85 Osaka-Jo Hall match which Tenryu's huge spike rise in popularity from this. They finished the show discussing his Tenryu's UN Heavyweight title and the eventual formation of AJPW's Triple Crown and his big-time singles matches vs. Jumbo and Stan Hansen before covering the rise and fall of SWS and later Tenryu's WAR promotion. Additionally, at 16:00 into the show, Fumi and Justin spent about ten minutes talking about about Terry Funk's recent health condition and how overblown it had gotten in the media. In Part 2, Fumi & Justin first talked about Tenryu's involvement in the short-lived “straight and strong” SWS run by Megane Super executives and Tenryu taking after Baba and Inoki and becoming a wrestling promoter with WAR. They went over his return to AJPW in the late '90s after the death of Giant Baba and his classics with Keiji Muto in All Japan, his work in the critically maligned HUSTLE and his retirement match in 2015 against NJPW's Kazuchika Okada. Kris & David are back as we talk about the week-plus that was November 21-28, 1990.We start the show with the World Wrestling Federation and their fourth annual Survivor Series pay-per-view show, which was a doozy, as we had the debuts of The Undertaker and THE GOBBLEDY GOOKER, as well as and the ULTIMATE SURVIVAL match, among all the news and views from that show. This is a special classic edition of Write That Down! With an original airdate of April 6, 2021, Fumi & Justin went over Stan Hansen's storied career in this special archive edition of Write That Down! The two went over Hansen vs. Bruno Sammartino at Shea Stadium & MSG before diving into his early years as a pro wrestler in 1973, when Hansen debuted in El Paso, Texas, and then his first tour of Japan in 1975 for Giant Baba's AJPW, and later his background and relationship with Jumbo Tsuruta and Brusier Brody, among others. In part two, Fumi & Justin discussed Hansen winning the Triple Crown in 1989 in an unification match vs. Jumbo Tsuruta, plus his classic 1990s run with AJPW and giving the proverbial rub to younger legends like Mitsuharu Misawa, Toshiaki Kawada and Kenta Kobashi until his retirement in 2001. On a special edition of the Eastern Lariat podcast, Dylan welcomes Japanese wrestling translator & historian Cameren Lee on to discuss the life and career of Antonio Inoki. From an unbelievably harsh childhood and improbable upbringing in the wrestling industry we discuss his early days as Rikidozan's trainee and his ascent and attempts to ascend to leading the company which turns into the formation of New Japan Pro Wrestling. From there we go into the deep political waters Inoki was forced to wade through with other wrestlers and especially TV Networks, his rivalry with his former tag team partner Giant Baba as they engage in constant attempts to one up each other as AJPW & NJPW owners. We talk about some of his biggest triumphs and matches in the ring and how he was even more than his reputation hails him as, which leads to scandals as time goes along with questionable decisions being made personally and professionally. We also discuss the underrated hand Inoki's wife at the time, the actress Mitsuko Baisho played in keeping NJPW afloat and all the mayhem surrounding Inoki through the decade. Finally we (relatively) briefly cover his political career which involved more scandal, his 4 year long retirement tour and his post-in-ring career including some talk about the Inoki-ism era of NJPW and his fade into IGF, closing into our thoughts in the overall legacy of this one of a kind complex & influential figure in life, letalone wrestling. Rest in Peace Antonio Inoki. February 20th, 1943 - October 1st, 2022. Follow the Eastern Lariat on Twitter: @EasternLariat Follow Cameren @KinchStalker & check out his blog centered around classic Japanese wrestling translation: frommilotomisawa.wordpress.com Also very soon STRIGGA will return and join Dylan for a more in-ring focused look at Inoki and his career when we do a Week of: Antonio Inoki. The first episode will be free for all on this feed and the later matches will be on patreon.com/easternlariat so subscribe to hear that along with much great pro wrestling content. Also feel free to follow @STRIGGA for more into him and make sure to subscribe to the Eastern Lariat wherever podcasts are heard and any 5 star reviews are truly appreciated. Most of all, thank you so much for listening! Thank you Antonio Inoki!
We are replaying a previous podcast by Justin Knipper and Fumi Saito on Antonio Inoki. This is part three of a five part series on Inoki that was recorded early in 2022. There is a link to all five episodes after Justin's original summary. In the next installment of their profile series on Antonio Inoki, Fumi Saito and Justin Knipper continued covering Inoki's full in-ring career, this time focusing on years 1974–1980. After Inoki's (and Seiji Sakaguchi's) NJPW and Giant Baba's AJPW established deals with television channels, the rivalry between the two companies began heating up. Fumi and Justin talked about the hot time it was for pro wrestling Japan during the mid-'70s, the influence of television and print media at the time. The two also went over Inoki's inventive and bloody December 1974 vs. IWA champion Strong Kobayashi, Inoki's year-long feud with Tiger Jeet Singh, his famous hour-long bout with Karl Gotch-trainee Billy Robinson, and his series of matches with Andre the Giant. They also talked about Vince McMahon Sr.'s involvement with and appearances for NJPW at around this time, which subsequently led to NJPW and the WWWF's 11-year working relationship. The partnership would also lead to Inoki's international breakout bout against Muhammed Ali in what many would call the world's first MMA fight, which Fumi and Justin also covered in detail towards the end of the show. Kris & David are joined this week by our old friend and BTS Patron, Mark Coale (@black_bile), who donated the required $100 to be the guest on the whole show that he requested. Mark requested the week of March 16-22, 1984, and it's a doozy. We open with the WWF, as they are taking over TV slots around the country from other promotions, with our week focusing on the San Francisco Bay Area. We also talk about Andre the Giant entering Piper's Pit for the first time, Akira Maeda's jobbing tour, and other early WWF expansion things. We then move on to the international scene, where we talk about NTV wanting Satoru Sayama to join AJPW but Giant Baba wouldn't stand for it, Riki Choshu running wild in New Japan, Ric Flair & Harley Race trading the NWA Title in/around New Zealand, Ricky Steamboat returning from his 2 month retirement in JCP, Tim Horner scoring a major upset over Road Warrior Hawk on WTBS, and Hacksaw Duggan heeling in Florida en route to returning as a babyface hero in Mid-South that same week. It's also in Mid-South that we have the reason why Mark requested this week: We have Mr. Wrestling II completing his heel turn plus Jim Cornette throwing a big party for the Midnight Express, setting up The Last Stampede in the process.
