Fortune's Wheel is a narrative history podcast focusing on the Late Middle Ages, approximately the mid-900s to 1492. This largely overlooked time period would see the formation of modern national borders as well as tell the intricate story of a land opening its eyes from the intellectual Dark Ages and into the most pivotal movements that will re-structure the world we know today: the Age of Exploration, the Reformation, the Renaissance, and the Enlightenment. PHILOSOPHY SERIES 1: Foundations of Western ThoughtEPISODE 003: Socrates: Ideas Worth Dying ForAfter taking a look at the world of Socrates on the last episode — the Athenian Golden Age, Pericles, the Plague of Athens, the Peloponnesian War — we dive into Socrates' philosophy! Using a handful of Plato's Dialogues — Euthyphro, Meno, Gorgias, Theaetetus, Symposium, and Phaedo — we will find some of the foundational concepts in Western philosophy, foundations that will directly impact not only the Classical Age, but also the beginnings of Christianity, medieval philosophy, and onto today!Members-Only Series on Patreon:For only a dollar per month, you can hear multiple varying stories and storylines so far through the 11th century, including but not limited to the creation of the Kingdom of Poland, what's happening on the Continent while Duke William is conquering England, and, currently, our series called “The Book of Alexios” detailing all those details of the monumental medieval emperor, Alexios Komnenos, that didn't make it into the public podcast. PHILOSOPHY SERIES 1: Foundations of Western ThoughtEPISODE 001: Socrates In ContextOn this episode, we take a few minutes to outline why Socrates was the way he was and why his life ended the way it did. Philosophy, to some degree, is a reflection on one's world, one's circumstances, and if I try to preach anything it's context matters. We won't always do a “history episode” in this philosophy series, but I just strongly feel that one cannot truly understand the monumental thinking of Socrates without understanding his monumentally important world. ClosingSEASON 7: All Roads Lead to ClermontMiniseries: Iberia on the Eve of CrusadeEPISODE 156: Beginning of the ReconquistaKing Alfonso VI of Leon-Castile, leading up to the pivotal year of 1095, needed to change the face of the Almoravid Conquest happening in Iberia. The Almoravid War Machine was formidable, but that wouldn't draw people to Iberia to help fight against it. He needed to get people to invest in what was happening. But what he did, coupled with outside events at the same time, actually helped inspire something completely different than what he was hoping for. This is an addendum episode. I realized that in the course of narrating some pretty exciting and fast-paced events in 1081, I regretfully felt that there were a few crucial explanations I failed to fully explain. These are very important to understand the entire context, and I felt it necessary to fill in the gaps before moving forward. But this is the process of understanding history, isn't it? If you get something wrong or fail to include something, it's better to take the time and fix the oversight rather than ignore it. Thanks for understanding, everyone. Schemes, preparations, and solidifications…oh my! Here is another chapter in our tale of a pope and his vassals, which, after a three-episode peek into Eastern Roman history, will directly set up something huge that's about to happen. We're turning another corner here as the narratives begin to take a wider view of European politics, but keep an eye on Duke Robert, the Old Fox, as he prepares for his most ambitious conquest to date! NOTE: During this Patreon series called The Book of Alexios, please note that there will be overlap in the episodes between the public podcast and the Patreon Supporting Members podcast. This is intended to help facilitate the merging of these two crucial storylines in (what I hope is) a seamless transition. So, this episode will serve as both public Episode 130 as well as Patreon Episode 23 in the series The Book of Alexios. Emperor Nikephoros III Botanieates is watching his beloved empire continue to collapse all around him. Two major revolts and a breakaway Norman state in his first two years were put down by his trusty young general, Alexios Komnenos, but things didn't die off; on the contrary, the collapse seemingly sped up. On this episode, Nikephoros III begins to see the writing on the wall. That's a curious phrase: “the writing on the wall.” We start off with a little history of where we get so many of our modern day phrases. But after that, when I said things sped up for the old emperor, well…we will end this episode at a breakneck speed, let's just leave it at that. NOTE: This episode will also serve as Patreon Supporting Listeners Episode 21 (entitled "The Book of Alexios: Chapter 2: Bryennios's Rebellion"), helping to bridge the public series and the Patreon Supporting Listeners series. On this episode, we see Nikephoros III Botanieates make his first moves as emperor in the wake of the devastating Bread Riots of 1078, as well as his response to the first coup (yes, first coup) against his brief reign, a coup that his most trusted general, young Alexios Komnenos, would be called upon to put down swiftly and decisively. If he thought Roussel de Balliol was a formidable enemy, then Alexios was in for a very rude awakening. The title of this episode is actually an old German phrase. To take a walk to Canossa means to humble oneself to the point of even begging for forgiveness. In American parlance, we say “eating crow.” Where did this come from, this phrase about humbling oneself? Listen and find out. If there was a list of the top five most definitive moments of the entire Middle Ages, what happens on this episode would certainly make it. The Siege of Bari begins and ends in this episode, but it's not a simple, open-and-shut story. There's intrigue and emperors and naval battles and trash-talk. This one has it all! This is one of those episodes that creates a benchmark for all the military leaders to come after it. And Roger sets a high benchmark in what amounts to the Thermopylae of the Norman Conquest of Sicily. However, we remember such battles not only for their brilliant military acumen or displays of courage and daring, but for their enduring impacts on the places they occur in, as well as — and arguably most importantly — the people and events they leave in their wake. The Battle of Cerami is one of those battles that show that battles are about far more than merely the fighting.
