In this soft-spoken bedtime story, I tell you about the History of the Norsemen in the Middle Ages. At the end of the Eighth Century, they embarked on raids, explorations, and conquests farther and farther from their homelands in Scandinavia. This took them as far east as the Volga River in Russia and Byzantium, and as far west as America, even though they did not stay there for long. They founded colonies such as Iceland or Vineland in Newfoundland, Canada, created new states such as the Kievan Rus', and settled in regions like Yorkshire or Normandy. We explore the reasons why they suddenly became outward-looking, what their societies were like, and how things unfolded until Christianization and the formation of larger kingdoms in Scandinavia (in Norway, Sweden, and Denmark), that put an end to the Viking Age. Hey, Hi, Hello, this is the History Wizard and welcome back for Day 19 of Have a Day w/ The History Wizard. Thank you to everyone who tuned in for Day 18 last week, and especially thank you to everyone who rated and/or reviewed the podcast. I hope you all learned something last week and I hope the same for this week as well. Originally this week was going to cover the currently ongoing genocide in Ukraine, but I need to do some more research before I'm ready to record that episode so instead today's episode is going to be an interlude and we're going to be talking aboutone of my favorite women in history. Olga of Kiev, a woman who is the very definition of fuck around and find out. But first! The Alchemist's Table! Today's libation is called Kissed by Summer. It's 2 oz of bourbon, 1 oz each of amaretto and francelico. .75 oz of vanilla simple syrup, 3 dashes of angostura bitters. Shake well and pour over ice. Top with equal parts lemonade and ginger beer and enjoy! So, now onto Ola of Kiev, the Saint of Slaughter. Olga's exact year of birth is unknown, but we know she was born somewhere between 890 and 925 CE in Pleskov. She was of Varangian origin, which was an ethnic group descended from Swedish vikingr invaders that eventually settled in the area of the Kievan Rus. She was 15 years old when she was married to Prince Igor I of the Rurik Dynasty. Igor was the son of Rurik, making him only the second ruler of this particular dynasty. During Igor's reign and owing to a great deal of military aid from his guardian Oleg the Wise the Kievan Rus, and the many tribes of people living in it all came under Rurik control. Tragedy would strike the Rurik Dynasty in the form of a neighboring tribe known as the Drevelians, a tribe of Eastern Slavic peoples. The Drevelians were not part of the Kievan Rus, though they had joined them in military campaigns against the Byzantine Empire previously and paid a yearly tribute to Igor's predecessors in the Rurik Dynasty. After Oleg the Wise died in 912 CE the Drevelians stopped paying their tribute to Igor, instead paying it to a local warlord. In 945 CE Igor set out with his army to bring the Drevelians into line. No longer would he allow them to deny him what he saw as his rightful tribute. He marched his army to the traditional Drevelian capital, Iskorosten, today known as Korosten in the Zhytomyr Oblast in northern Ukraine. Now, Igor's army was much larger than any the Drevelians could field, so they backed down and agreed to resume their payments to Igor. However, Igor became greedy and after leaving to return home he turned around and went back to Iskorosten to demand even MORE tribute, at which point he Drevelians captured him alone and killed him. According to the Byzantine chronicler Leo the Deacon, Igor's death was caused by a gruesome act of torture in which he was "captured by them, tied to tree trunks, and torn in two." They allegedly tied one leg each to two bent over birch trees and then let them catapult up in opposing directions, tearing him in half. Though it is possible that this exact story is apocryphal, the fact that Igor was killed by the Drevelians cannot be denied. Upon learning of the death of her husband Olga ascended to the throne to rule as regent in the name of her son Sviatoslav. Olga was the first woman to rule over the Kievan Rus. Now, there isn't a great deal of information in the historical record regarding what Olga's reign was like. But there is A LOT of information detailing the bloody revenge she got on those who stole her love from her. The Drevelians, now firmly in the Fuck Around stage and emboldened by their successful murder of Igor sent a missive to Olga. They proposed that Olga should marry the Drevelian prince Mal. The man directly responsible for killing her husband. According to the Russian Primary Chronicle, a document formerly thought to have been written by Nestor the Chronicler, although now it is considered to be of unknown authorship, Olga responded to their bold pronouncement thusly: “Your proposal is pleasing to me, indeed, my husband cannot rise again from the dead. But I desire to honor you tomorrow in the presence of my people. Return now to your boat, and remain there with an aspect of arrogance. I shall send for you on the morrow, and you shall say, "We will not ride on horses nor go on foot, carry us in our boat." And you shall be carried in your boat.” When they returned the next day the Drevelians repeated the words Olga had bade them and the people of the Kievan Rus lifted their boat upon their shoulders and carried them into the courtyard of Olga's castle. The Drevelians were thrilled by this, feeling as though they were carried in great honor upon a palanquin. Once they were brought into the courtyard their porters dropped them, boat and all, into a trench that Olga had ordered dug the day before and were buried alive. It is written that Olga bent down to watch them as they were buried and "inquired whether they found the honor to their taste." The Drevelins were now squarely in the middle of the Find Out stage, although they didn't know it yet as all 20 of the men from the initial retinue they had sent were now buried in the courtyard of Olga's home. So Olga wrote to the Drevelians and asked them to send “their distinguished men to her in Kiev, so that she might go to their Prince with due honor.” The Drevelian, completely unaware of the fate of the previous retinue sent others to Olga, who ordered a bath be drawn so that they might wash off the dust of the road. Once the bath was drawn and the Drevelians were comfortably in the bathhouse, Olga set the damnthing on fire. No one escaped alive. But Olga's revenge was not complete. The Drevelians, still unaware that Olga was engaged in acts of genocidal revenge over the death of her husband, received another missive from her. She was on her way to Iskotorsten and asked that they prepare great quantities of mead so that she might mourn and feast her husband as is proper. And the Drevelians compiled and a funeral feast was held by Igor's tomb. When the Drevelians were good and drunk on mead, Olga ordered her followers to fall upon them and slaughter them all. According to the Primary Chronicle some 5000 Drevelians were killed in a single night. Olga would then return to Kiev, her capital city, and prepare her armies to march back to Iskotorsten. She swept across Drevelian land like an avenging angel until she reached, once again, their capital. Here is where things stalled and Olga entered into a year long siege. Eventually she sent another missive to the Drevelians asking them why their capital refused to surrender. “All of your other cities have surrendered and now pay tribute to me, why would you rather die of hunger than pay tribute.” The Drevelians, as you might expect, responded that they were worried that Olga ws still dead set on revenge, but Olga told them that the boat, bathhouse, and feast massacres had satisfied her. She instead asked them for 3 pigeons and three sparrows from each house and the Drevelians rejoiced that the price they were asked to pay was so low. Oh those poor fools. Olga then instructed her army to attach a piece of sulphur bound with small pieces of cloth to each bird. At nightfall, Olga told her soldiers to set the pieces aflame and release the birds. They returned to their nests within the city, which subsequently set the city ablaze. As the Primary Chronicle tells it: "There was not a house that was not consumed, and it was impossible to extinguish the flames, because all the houses caught fire at once." As the people fled the burning city, Olga ordered her soldiers to catch them, killing some of them and giving the others as slaves to her followers. Olga would go on to become a saint in the Eastern Orthodox Church. Not because of the genocide she committed. Mostly because of her efforts to Christianize the Kievan Rus, a mission that she did not succeed in, but that was carried to fruition by her grandson Vladimir. Well… that's it for this week folks. Historically Thinking: Conversations about historical knowledge and how we achieve it
In late July 2013, Vladimir Putin visited Kiev. There he celebrated the 1,025th anniversary of Christianity coming to the Kievan Rus. There he and Ukrainian President Victor Yanukovych stood shoulder to shoulder and celebrated the unity of Russia and Ukraine. At that moment–my guest Michael Kimmage writes– Putin and Yanukovych, Russia and Ukraine, seemed to be “twin protagonists of the same story.” Seven months later things were very different indeed. This was because of what my guest Michael Kimmage describes as a series of collisions which resulted in the war that began in 2014, and which accelerated in 2022. The first collision was between Russia and Ukraine; the second between Russia and Europe; and the third between Russia and the United States. Michael Kimmage is Professor of History at the Catholic University of America where is chair of the department. From 2014 to 2016, he served on the Secretary's Policy Planning Staff at the US Department of State, where he held the Russia/Ukraine portfolio. He was last on Historically Thinking in Episode 165 to discuss his book The Abandonment of the West: The History of an Idea in American Foreign Policy. His most recent book is Collisions: The Origins of the War in Ukraine and the New Global Instability, and it is the subject of our conversation today. For Further Investigation The list of Historically Thinking conversations either directly connection or tangentially related to this conversation with Michael Kimmage is vast. Here are just a few... Today, I am going to recount to you several appearances of the Blessed Mother Mary. It's interesting because I first decided to do this when I heard about a shocking rosary miracle in Ukraine that happened about a year ago. I researched some other amazing things yesterday, and then today, when I was about to start recording, I found an article that discusses previous Marian apparitions in Ukraine. It appears our blessed Mother has visited them a few times over the years. So, today I will read the article from Desmond Miller,(CLICK HERE for first article) and then I will read the information from CNA on Facebook about the recent miracle Mary provided some people in Ukraine. (CLICK HERE for second article) My hope in sharing this with you is so that you can see how important the rosary can be and also so that you can see miracles are still going on today.Ukraine as a country has suffered very much and yet has been blessed by apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary.Kievan Rus – the land of Rus (862-1242 CE), a federation of peoples located in the region of modern-day Belarus, Ukraine, and part of Russia, was the first European state to be dedicated to the Mother of God. This was done by Prince Yaroslav the Wise in 1037.It is believed that in about 1505, the Blessed Virgin appeared in Hrushiv and that the local people had planted a willow tree at the site. Sometime later, a spring of water appeared beneath the tree.During a severe cholera epidemic in that area in 1855, a local person dreamed that the Virgin had instructed the residents to clear and reclaim the ancient spring and celebrate Mass. This was done, and not one cholera death was reported thereafter. The first apparition in modern times occurred two weeks before World War I, on May 12, 1914, in the village of Hrushiv. Twenty-two people, who were mowing fields near the local church of the Holy Trinity, all witnessed an apparition of the Virgin Mary. She said to them,“There will be a war. Russia will become a godless country. Ukraine, as a nation, will suffer terribly for eighty years – and will have to live through the world wars, but it will be free afterward.”People gathered from the whole area to see the apparition, which lasted into the next day. Then, on April 26, 1987, seventy-three years later and exactly one year after the Chernobyl nuclear reactor disaster, a bright light covered the church of the Holy Trinity and the surrounding area. From within this, the Virgin Mary appeared and floated above the cupola of the church. Marina Kizyn, a twelve-year-old girl, was the first to see this apparition. She immediately called her mother and some neighbors; all came and witnessed the apparition. Soon, hundreds and then thousands came from all over Russia to see the apparition, which continued daily until August 15, 1987. It is estimated that a total of 500,000 people had seen her by the time these apparitions ended. The Virgin Mary was even seen by the KGB agents! Many priests (from underground Catholic churches) came and provided as many as ten Holy Masses each day in front of the church. Many messages were documented:“I have come on purpose to thank the Ukrainian people because you have suffered most for the church of Christ in the last 70 years. I have come to comfort you and to tell you that your suffering will soon come to an end. Ukraine will become an independent state.”“Teach the children to pray. Teach them to live in truth and live yourselves in truth. Say the Rosary. It is the weapon against Satan. He fears the Rosary. Recite the Rosary at any gathering of people.”“I have come to comfort you and to tell you that your suffering will end soon. I shall protect you for the glory and the future of God's kingdom on earth, which will last for a thousand years. The Kingdom of Heaven and Earth is close at hand. It will come only through penance and the repentance of sins.”“The Eternal God is calling you. This is why I have been sent to you. You in the Ukraine were the first [European] nation to be entrusted to me. Throughout your long persecution you have not lost faith, hope, or love. I always pray for you, my dear children, wherever you are.”“Oppression and wars continue to occupy the minds and hearts of many people. Russia, despite everything, continues to deny my Son. Russia rejects real life and continues to live in darkness. If there is not a return to Christianity in Russia, there will be a Third World War; the whole world will face ruin.”Ukraine had its declaration of independence ratified in Kiev on August 24, 1991 – some 77 years after Blessed Mary's prediction in 1914!Now we are witnessing the Russian invasion of the Ukraine beginning on 24 Feb. 2022 with yet more suffering and the potential for the start of a third world war.I believe that God allows this to happen as a form of chastisement, a purification, a call to turn again to God. We are to repent, to praise and thank Him in every situation. LATEST SHOCKING ROSARY MIRACLE IN UKRAINE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY MANIFESTED HER GREAT POWER IN UKRAINE | RUSSIA WAR"For 18 Days, 45 of us trapped Underground By Russian Missile Strikes came out safe through a Diamond Lady that Kept Us Alive and Nourished Us." Beloved Souls and great Lovers of the Most Holy Rosary of our Lady, I wish to bring this edifying Rosary MIRACLE to strengthen your faith and love towards It. As the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, remains under bombardment with missile strikes and rockets crashing into a residential building, Cathedrals, Churches, etc.The Ukrainian aid workers rescued 45 civilians, mostly women, children, and the aged. We were trapped in the debris of about 2,000 feet underground for 18 days! The rescue of these people who had been feared dead has been described as, I personally believe is an inspiring miracle of the Consecration of Ukraine to the Immaculate Heart of Our Lady, the Blessed Virgin Mary, Queen of Ukraine, Our Lady of Ransom, Our Lady of Good Remedy, Queen of the Holy Rosary. HERE IS THE TESTIMONY OF THE RESCUED PERSONS."As we were underground, it was dark and suffocating. Somehow, I accidentally touched my pockets and remembered my Rosary was in it. The moment I pulled it out and recited the first Hail Mary, a woman as shining like a diamond appeared. The moment She appeared, the entire under-earth was filled with light and oxygen. The moment she left, we all felt nourished, well-fed, and our thirst for water quenched. Each time we said our Angelus and Rosary, The Diamond woman would appear to bless us, supply us, leave us with Magnificent Light and Oxygen that accompanies Her Majestic presence."It was so glorious for the victims that when the Ukrainian aid workers, with the use of the latest technology - unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), discovered that human beings were trapped there, and action was taken to rescue them. At the point of the rescue, most of the victims were reluctant to come out. In fact, one of them said, *"I can never come out from here, so I don't miss the company of the Diamond Lady. She is so kind."*It took the Miraculous appearance of our Lady to get her out of the rubbles, who now assured the young girl that She, the Queen of the Holy Rosary, would always be with all of them. *Our Lady then advised them to tell the world that She is the Queen of Peace and can bring Peace to our troubled world if enough of us can pick up our Rosaries and pray to God. For the Rosary is the only weapon through which God has promised to bring peace and save the world.”VICTORIOUS WE OF HEAVEN, SHOW US THY POWER.As you can see, Mary has a special place in her heart for the people of Ukraine. It is incredible how she not only appeared to provide comfort in the latest miracle but also provided light, oxygen, and nourishment. In all or at least most of her apparitions, she is appealing to us to say the rosary. It must be important or she wouldn't keep saying it. It only takes 20-30 minutes a day and you can say it anywhere. I like to say it when I am driving in the car. There are apps you can download as well so you don't have to feel as though you are saying it alone. Also, they are helpful if you aren't sure how to say it or you don't know all the words to all the prayers. If you truly don't have 20-30 minutes a day, or if that commitment seems too overwhelming for you, try just one decade a day. That only takes five minutes or so and by the end of 5 days you will have completed a whole rosary. Think about it, pray, and see where the rosary fits into your life.
In the 10th century, Kievan Rus was first a military-trade company. Later, it turned into a Slavic state. Prince Oleg settled in Kiev and named it the mother of the cities of Rus.

We examine the geography and history of Russia, from the origins of the Kievan Rus in the Early Middle Ages, to the tumultuous time of industrialization, emancipation, and radical subversion at the start of the Twentieth Century. We try reconstruct the circumstances and mindsets that led the Russian state to back up their allies in Serbia, in order to maintain their tenuous foothold in the Balkans and their pretenses of leading and protecting the Slavic world. image: Luzhetsky Monastery, Mozhaysk, Russia Suggested further reading: Braithwaite, "Russia: Myths and Realities"; Kort, "A Brief History of Russia"; Riasanovsky, "A History of Russia" Please sign up as a patron to hear the previous installment on Bosnia! -- https://www.patreon.com/user?u=5530632
The Story of Russia is a peek into the thousand years of Russia's history, concerned as much with the ideas that have shaped how Russians think about their past as it is with the events and personalities comprising it. No other country has reimagined its own story so often, in a perpetual effort to stay in step with the shifts of ruling ideologies. From the founding of Kievan Rus in the first millennium to Putin's war against Ukraine, Orlando Figes explores the ideas that have guided Russia's actions throughout its long and troubled existence. Whether he's describing the crowning of Ivan the Terrible in a candlelit cathedral or the dramatic upheaval of the peasant revolution, he reveals the impulses, often unappreciated or misunderstood by foreigners, that have driven Russian history: the medieval myth of Mother Russia's holy mission to the world; the imperial tendency toward autocratic rule; the popular belief in a paternal tsar dispensing truth and justice; the cult of sacrifice rooted in the idea of the “Russian soul”; and always, the nationalist myth of Russia's unjust treatment by the West. Olga (Old East Slavic: Вольга, romanized: Volĭga;[a] Old Norse: Helga; Lith: Alge; Christian name: Elena; c. 890–925 – 969) was a regent of Kievan Rus' for her son Sviatoslav from 945 until 960. Following her baptism, Olga took the name Elenа (Old East Slavic: Ѡлена, romanized: Olena).[2] She is known for her subjugation of the Drevlians, a tribe that had killed her husband Igor of Kiev. Even though it was her grandson Vladimir who converted the entire nation to Christianity, because of her efforts to spread Christianity through Rus', Olga is venerated as a saint in the Eastern Orthodox Church with the epithet "Equal to the Apostles". VYS0023 | Mercurial, Mutable, Mysterious Something - Vayse to Face with Paul Weston - Show Notes It's episode 23 and joining Hine and Buckley to pull that cosmic trigger is none other than author, researcher, lecturer and master of synchro-mysticism, Paul Weston. In the way that only Paul knows how, he spins a wonderful, breath-taking web of strange events, synchronicities and bizarre connections which all emerged in a single extremely powerful month in his home town of Glastonbury - How did he end up scattering Courtney Love's father's ashes in the centre of the Glastonbury Zodiac? How does that relate to a series of macabre and grisly murders? And how did the discovery of a swastika on the threshold of Dion Fortune's former residence trigger a waking-dream-proximity-alert? Paul also talks about how Cosmic Trigger is a psycho-active book (a trip he's taken 29 times!), how you can encourage synchronicities in your own life and how to deal with Chapel Perilous when your time comes... recorded 26 March 2023 Thanks to Keith for compiling the show notes!!! Olga was the wive of Igor, the Grand Prince of the Kievan Rus', a federation of people whose capital was the city of Kyiv, now the capital of modern day Ukraine. When her husband was brutally murdered by a subsidiary tribe, Olga went on a legendary campaign of cunning and ruthless revenge. Once in control of her husband's kingdom, she was an efficient and effective leader. She converted to Christianity in order to get out of an unwanted marriage proposal. She is credited with introducing Christianity to the Rus people. After her death, Olga was canonized as a saint and is regarded as “Equal to the Apostles” within the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church. Jadwiga, Female King of Poland was crowned at the age of 10. She grew wise beyond her years and was forced to make a difficult decision about who to marry – a young man she liked or an old man who would Christianize his country for her. Though she reigned for only 15 years she did a great deal of good and is considered one of the greatest monarchs in Polish history. Join me every Tuesday when I'm Spilling the Tea on History! Mikhail Shishkin is one of the most celebrated living Russian novelists and the only author to have won all three major Russian literary prizes. All his books have been adapted for the stage in Russia and they have been translated into 30 languages. In conversation with historian Victor Sebastyen Shishkin traces the roots of Russia's problems, from Kievan Rus via the Grand Duchy of Moscow, empire, revolution and the Cold War to the now thirty-year-old Russian Federation. He explores the uneasy relationship between the Russian state and its citizens, and set out his view that there are really two Russian peoples: the disillusioned and disaffected, who suffer from what he calls a slave mentality, and those who embrace so-called European values and try to stand up to oppression. And he addresses the most vital question of all: Will Russia continue its vicious circle of upheaval and autocracy, or will its people find a way out of history? Learn more about your ad choices. Last time on HPH we began the story of Harald Sigurdsson, who had been born into a royal Norwegian family and who had fled to Kievan Rus and then became a mercenary warrior in Constantinople. This week we're picking up where we left off and taking you through his rise to the Norwegian throne, his constant battles with the Danes, and the douchebaggery that would earn him the nickname Hardrada, or hard ruler. It's a crazy story and you're gonna want to hear how it ends, so grab a drink, settle in, and enjoy this episode of Hundred Proof History titled The Last Viking King Part II...Kind of a Dick! If you enjoyed the show please consider joining the patreon! For only $3 a month you get access to classic episodes, bonus mini-episodes, and early release of new episodes! Every heard of Olga of Kiev? Your gonna love this one. Olga of Kiev, also known as Saint Olga, was a ruler of Kievan Rus' who lived in the 10th century. She was born in Pskov, Russia, around 890, and was married to the Prince of Kiev, Igor I. When her husband was killed by a neighboring tribe (Buckle up for that part), Olga took over as regent for their son, Svyatoslav. She became known for her intelligence, courage, and determination, and she successfully defended her kingdom against several invasions.Olga is perhaps best known for her conversion to Christianity. She was baptized in Constantinople in 957, becoming the first ruler of Kievan Rus' to embrace the new faith. She subsequently attempted to convert her subjects, although she faced significant resistance. Olga died in 969, and was later canonized by the Orthodox Church. She is considered a patron saint of widows and converts
This is a follow-up to our previous episode about the Byzantines, Goths, Huns, Persians, and Turks. In this episode, we look at what was going on in the northern parts of the European continent in the early medieval period. We will shed some light on why European history went the way it did. Questions such as: Why did feudalism develop? Why does eastern Europe use the Cyrillic alphabet? Why did the French and British build so many castles? Why did Ireland produce so many medieval monks and scholars? The focus of our study today will be the Vikings, Rus, Celts, Britons, and Franks. Once again, in this breezy intro we will be looking at the key figures, cultural institutions, events, and military tactics of each of these civilizations. And yes, we will be using a bit of Age of Empires II nostalgia as an icebreaker to learn about each civ. The "femme fatale" trope gets cranked up a notch in this week's episode. Our subject, Olga of Kiev, was a Kievan Rus' leader during the 10th century who made her enemies pay the ultimate price. Born of Viking (Varangian) blood, she would not only strike fear into her opponents...but would eventually become a saint? Listen now to hear her stranger than fiction life story. - BarkBox Affiliate Link NordVPN Affiliate Link Thank you for listening Weirdos! A saint for a Halloween episode?! I know it might seem backwards, but, let me tell you: this is NOT a saint you want to mess with. Her story is violent with scenes that would be appropriate for a horror movie. St. Olga is the patron saint for the city of Kyiv but I personally like to think of her as the patron saint of "f*ck around and find out." In our tale...people do and they did... St. Olga is the patron saint for the city of Kyiv but I personally like to think of her as the patron saint of "f*ck around and find out." In our tale...people do and they did... KT is out again and is officially down with Covid. We wish her a speedy recovery! *~*~*~*~* Mentioned in the Story: St. Olga's Portrait Korosten's City Coat of Arms Deep Into History--Arjun is a story master and will be immersing his listeners into this same story for Halloween if you want to catch his version! *~*~*~*~ The Socials! GLOSSARYWhat is the Kievan Rus ?(00:8:11 or p.2 in the transcript) Kievan Rus (862-1242) was a medieval political federation located in modern-day Belarus, Ukraine, and part of Russia (the latter named for the Rus, a Scandinavian people). The name Kievan Rus is a modern-day (19th century) designation but has the same meaning as 'land of the Rus,' which is how the region was known in the Middle Ages. The Rus ruled from the city of Kiev (also given as Kyiv) and so 'Kievan Rus' simply meant "the lands of the Rus of Kiev". The Rus are first mentioned in the Annals of Saint-Bertin which records their presence in a diplomatic mission from Constantinople to the court of Louis the Pious (r. 814-840) in 839. The annals claim they were Swedes, and this is possible, but their ethnicity has never been firmly established. Source: What was the crisis and annexation of Crimea ? (00:08:38 or p.2 in the transcript) As pro-Russian protesters became increasingly assertive in Crimea, groups of armed men whose uniforms lacked any clear identifying marks surrounded the airports in Simferopol and Sevastopol.. Masked gunmen occupied the Crimean parliament building and raised a Russian flag, as pro-Russian lawmakers dismissed the sitting government and installed Sergey Aksyonov, the leader of the Russian Unity Party, as Crimea's prime minister. On March 6 the Crimean parliament voted to secede from Ukraine and join the Russian Federation, with a public referendum on the matter scheduled for March 16, 2014. On the day of the referendum, observers noted numerous irregularities in the voting process, including the presence of armed men at polling stations, and the result was an overwhelming 97 percent in favour of joining Russia On March 18 Putin met with Aksyonov and other regional representatives and signed a treaty incorporating Crimea into the Russian Federation. Western governments protested the move. Within hours of the treaty's signing, a Ukrainian soldier was killed when masked gunmen stormed a Ukrainian military base outside Simferopol. Russian troops moved to occupy bases throughout the peninsula, including Ukrainian naval headquarters in Sevastopol, as Ukraine initiated the evacuation of some 25,000 military personnel and their families from Crimea. On March 21 after the ratification of the annexation treaty by the Russian parliament, Putin signed a law formally integrating Crimea into Russia. In the war for Ukraine, it's Zelensky versus Putin. Two men with essentially the same first name fighting for their place in history — not just for their respective countries but for the ancestral roots that Russia and Ukraine share, and that both rulers claim to be the true defender of.And a prince, who ruled more than 1,000 years ago — known in Russia as Vladimir the Great and in Ukraine as Volodymyr the Great — lies at the heart of that intertwined history. We get into that today.More reading:Putin's rationale for Ukraine invasion gets the history wrongUkrainian TalesIn battle between Russia and Ukraine, even God is in dispute

Welcome to episode 52 where Ron and Buckley discuss the current situation in Ukraine and the propaganda coming from the main stream media. We are questioning the narrative based on what we see and what we hear, which isn't much at this point. We cover the Bio Lab misinformation, Putin's possible agenda, and the actions he has taken to subvert sanctions against Russia, fuel prices and the push for EV's. The discussion also covers the massive amounts of Virtue Signaling (Placing Ukrainian Flags on their Profiles, dumping out perfectly good vodka, willing to pay more for gas to fight against Russia) and how people are easily manipulated to pick a side, you do not have to pick a side. We touch a little on the question "What is the real beef between Ukraine and Russia?" and how it could go back to the hidden history of the Khazarian Empire (The Cabal) and their Defeat at the Hands of the Kievan Rus, which is now Russia. Its a thought provoking episode that we hope you enjoy! Take a listen and as always Thank You for Your Support! Be sure to follow and subscribe. In connection with the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the story of the 13th century invasion of the Slavic lands by Batu Khan, grandson of Genghis Khan, and his Golden Horde. The Mongols destroyed (the then minor town) Moscow as well as the metropolis of Kyiv, subjecting the principalities of Kievan Rus as vassals. The Mongols went on invade Central-Eastern Europe, finally laying siege to Vienna. They would rule the land of the Rus for over two centuries. And among their vassals was one most interesting personality who would become canonized as a saint, whose story even now tells us a great deal about Russia: Alexander Nevsky...
Recorded on Sunday February 27 In the aftermath of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, we begin a multi part series on the subject by discussing some of the potential dangerous threats that might be in play in this moment, and some of the shortcomings of American institutions to speak honestly about the nature of false flag terror, both in an American context and a Russian context. Vikings[a] is the modern name given to seafaring people primarily[3] from Scandinavia (present-day Denmark, Norway and Sweden),[4][5][6] who from the late 8th to the late 11th centuries raided, pirated, traded and settled throughout parts of Europe.[7][8][9] They also voyaged as far as the Mediterranean, North Africa, the Middle East, and North America. In some of the countries they raided and settled in, this period is popularly known as the Viking Age, and the term "Viking" also commonly includes the inhabitants of the Scandinavian homelands as a collective whole. The Vikings had a profound impact on the early medieval history of Scandinavia, the British Isles, France, Estonia, and Kievan Rus'.[10] Expert sailors and navigators aboard their characteristic longships, Vikings established Norse settlements and governments in the British Isles, Ireland, the Faroe Islands, Iceland, Greenland, Normandy, the Baltic coast, and along the Dnieper and Volga trade routes in what is now European Russia, Belarus[11] and Ukraine,[12] where they were also known as Varangians. The Normans, Norse-Gaels, Rus' people, Faroese and Icelanders emerged from these Norse colonies. The Vikings also voyaged to Constantinople, Iran,[13] and Arabia.[14] They were the first Europeans to reach North America, briefly settling in Newfoundland (Vinland). While spreading Norse culture to foreign lands, they simultaneously brought home slaves, concubines and foreign cultural influences to Scandinavia, profoundly influencing the genetic[15] and historical development of both. During the Viking Age the Norse homelands were gradually consolidated from smaller kingdoms into three larger kingdoms: Denmark, Norway and Sweden. If ever there was a woman you did NOT want to mess with during the Medieval Ages, it was Olga of Kiev. Venerated as a saint within the Russian Orthodox Church and recalled as a vengeful and deadly Viking Princess by ancient Russian and Slavic chroniclers, the story of Olga has perplexed historians for over 1000 years. Was she a sinner or a saint? A clever strategist amidst the chessboard of Kievan Rus politics or a blood thirsty heathen without scruples, hellbent on avenging her brutally murdered husband? Hint: she was both. Olga of Kiev was not the sort of woman to be underestimated. And for the love of whatever gods you hold dear, do NOT ask for her hand in marriage. Or you're going to have a bad time. **No sparrows or pigeons were harmed in the recording of this podcast.** --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
Today's heroine has a bit of a temper and is most likely a Scorpio for her revenge gene. St. Olga of Kiev is one of medieval history's craziest revenge stories, and to make things all the more ironic, she somehow makes her way to saint-dom in not one but two church traditions!Maddie's in charge on today's episode, and she's taking us back to medieval Russia.Sources:https://www.britannica.com/topic/Rushttps://www.history.com/news/vikings-in-russia-kiev-rus-varangians-prince-oleghttps://warfarehistorynetwork.com/2015/02/06/the-worst-leaders-in-history-igor-i-of-kiev/https://www.worldhistory.org/Kievan_Rus/https://www.historyanswers.co.uk/history-of-war/why-were-samurai-swords-so-strong/https://www.warhistoryonline.com/war-articles/igor-of-kiev.htmlhttps://www.ozy.com/true-and-stories/meet-the-murderous-viking-princess-who-brought-the-faith-to-eastern-europe/83251/Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/hyperfocus/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
