Frank and Squeaks dive headfirst into James Gunn's Superman, the movie that's recharging DC with new energy and old-school heart. They break down everything—from the pacing that mimics a stack of comics, to character performances, visual highs and lows, and why this might be one of the most human versions of Superman we've ever seen. They also debate Guy Gardner's scene-stealing turn, Lex Luthor's layered villainy, the potential setup for Bizarro, and what it all means for the future of the DC Universe. This one's packed, passionate, and full of geeky joy. Timestamps and Topics: 00:00 Welcome and Opening Thoughts 00:27 Initial Reactions and Hype Level 01:13 Fast Pacing and Comic Book Feel 02:10 James Gunn's Signature Style 03:30 Thoughts on the Plot and Accessibility for New Fans 04:20 Lex Luthor's Role and Future Setup 05:36 All-Star Superman Comparisons 06:00 Kryptonian Parents Twist and Its Impact 08:30 Cancel Culture and Superman's PR Weakness 09:58 Mr. Terrific and the Unexpected Standout 11:00 Guy Gardner's Surprising Depth and Humor 13:15 Hawkgirl and the Performance Letdown 15:00 The New Superman: Human, Hopeful, and Heroic 18:16 Lois Lane's Portrayal and Rachel Brosnahan's Performance 20:00 Daily Planet Crew: A Bit Too Involved? 22:30 Nicholas Hoult's Lex Luthor and the Two-Layered Villain 25:00 Engineer and Ultraman Discussion + Bizarro Theory 29:00 Visual Storytelling and Cinematography Highlights 32:00 CGI Thoughts and Krypto's Role 36:00 Green Lantern Constructs: Unique and Personality-Driven 38:30 Superman's Power Progression and Final Battle 40:30 Tone and Themes: Can This Superman Fit with Batman? 43:00 Final Thoughts on Justice League Potential 44:00 Favorite Scenes and End-Credit Surprises 47:00 Final Scores and Rewatchability 50:00 IMAX Worthy? Our Theatrical Recommendation 51:00 Closing Remarks Key Takeaways: James Gunn's Superman blends nostalgic charm with a modern, fast-paced narrative. David Corenswet's Superman is emotionally grounded and feels deeply human. Lex Luthor, played by Nicholas Hoult, delivers a fresh take that balances public genius with private obsession. Guy Gardner and Mr. Terrific both exceed expectations, with standout scenes that highlight their personalities. The film's pacing mirrors a comic book run—nonstop but rewarding. The twist about Superman's Kryptonian parents adds emotional weight without breaking canon. Visual storytelling uses lighting—especially sunlight—as a powerful symbolic tool. Bizarro may be hinted at for future films, adding another exciting layer. While some characters like Hawkgirl were underwhelming, others like Krypto left a lasting impact. Quotes: “This is the Superman I pretended to be when I was running around the house as a kid.” – Frank “Lex Luthor isn't trying to rule the world—he's just obsessed with stopping Superman.” – Squeaks “It feels like you picked up a stack of DC comics and read them in one sitting.” – Squeaks “David Corenswet might be the most human Superman we've seen on screen.” – Frank Call to Action: Love what you heard? On the Independence Day Special from CBS News Radio, host Gil Gross and author Stephen Brumwell look at the birth of guerilla warfare, or as military scholars call it “asymmetric warfare.” Invented by Robert Rogers, an American colonist who led Rogers' Rangers against the French Army in North America, his tactics are still being taught in military academies to this day. Rogers, whom his indigenous opponents called “the White Devil,” became the most famous soldier in North America–eclipsing even George Washington–but fell from grace during the Revolutionary War. And what is the 4th of July without fireworks? John Withington shares the fascinating story of the origins of fireworks and how they continue to amaze us to this day. Then, we will learn about Washington's Final Battle with author Robert Watson about our first President's effort to establish the new nation's capital and how that almost tore the country apart. Today we'll be rebroadcasting our conversation with David Horowitz, the influential author, speaker, and conservative activist who passed away 4/29/25 at the age of 86 after a long battle with cancer. Best known for his memoir Radical Son and for boldly confronting radical ideologies on college campuses, Horowitz spent a lifetime navigating—and ultimately rejecting—the political extremes of the American Left. From his early days among Marxists and Black Panthers to his fierce advocacy for free speech and Western values through the David Horowitz Freedom Center, his voice remained unapologetically clear. His journey from revolutionary to Reagan Republican left a permanent mark on America's culture wars. [Original airdate: 2/16/23] TODAY'S GUEST: David Horowitz is founder of the David Horowitz Freedom Center and the bestselling author of several books, including Radical Son, The Black Book Of The American Left, Dark Agenda: The War To Destroy Christian America, and his brand new book, FINAL BATTLE: THE NEXT ELECTION COULD BE THE LAST. Final Battle, by David Horowitz, exposes the real threat that Democrats pose to freedom. The rise of socialism and critical race theory, coupled with threats to the Electoral College and Senate, an independent judiciary, and the integrity of the electoral system, now threaten to destroy the traditions that bring Americans together — the heart of our democracy. ...Americans now speak in different and antagonistic political languages, and the two parties are so polarized that the American way of life itself is at risk.

Case and Jmike are joined by Doug Lief (from the Nostalgium Arcanum podcast) to talk about a family that's pretty super, The Incredibles! Overview In Podcast episode 142 of Men of Steel, hosts Case Aiken and Jmike Folson, alongside guest Doug Lief, delve into a comprehensive analysis of Disney's The Incredibles through the lens of Superman fandom. They explore the film's connections to other superhero media, notably its references to 60s Batman and Fleischer Superman, while debating the film's overall tone, which Case describes as having an 'angry' directorial voice. The discussion emphasizes Mr. Incredible as a Superman analog, revealing how his secret identity as Bob Parr reflects an average man grappling with superhero responsibilities amid family dynamics. The team draws parallels between the family members' powers and their roles, likening the villain Syndrome to a failed fan archetype obsessed with eliminating exceptionalism. Additionally, they analyze the film's aging animation, contextualize its place in the superhero genre before the rise of the MCU, and celebrate its blend of action and relatable family themes. The episode culminates in discussing the film's unresolved questions about the necessity of superheroes in society, concluding that it adeptly balances the extraordinary with the everyday. Notes ️ Introduction and Context (01:12 - 15:47) Case Aiken and Jmike Folson host the Men of Steel podcast with guest Doug Lief The discussion focuses on Disney's The Incredibles (2004) from a Superman fan perspective Doug mentions the movie's connections to Watchmen and other superhero media The hosts establish that the film is a love letter to superheroes with influences from 60s Batman, James Bond, and Fleischer Superman Case acknowledges he likes but doesn't love the movie, finding it has an 'angry' directorial voice ️ Mr. Incredible as Superman Analog (15:47 - 24:52) The group analyzes Mr. Incredible (Bob Parr) as a Superman analog Bob Parr's name means 'average' - perfect for a secret identity His job at an insurance company creates dramatic irony (helping after harm vs. preventing it) The hosts discuss Mr. Incredible's durability, strength, and physical capabilities The film explores the tension between superhero responsibility and family obligations The 'Bob Parr' identity has real value to him beyond just being a disguise Family Dynamics and Powers (24:52 - 39:20) The Incredibles compared to Fantastic Four but with a nuclear family structure Each family member's powers serve as metaphors for their roles: Elastigirl must 'bend over backwards' for her family Violet wants to be invisible/blend in as a teenager Dash wants to show off and stand out with his speed Holly Hunter praised for her performance as Elastigirl The married couple dynamic shows mature flirtation and partnership Sarah Vowell's performance as Violet highlighted despite not being a professional actress Syndrome as Villain (39:20 - 54:00) Syndrome analyzed as Jimmy Olsen gone evil or fan-turned-Lex Luthor His character represents fandom and mediocrity wanting to eliminate specialness Syndrome observes and counters heroes' weaknesses but fails to examine his own His fatal flaw is wearing a cape, which Edna Mode had warned against The group discusses connections to Alan Moore's works (Watchmen and Captain Britain) Syndrome's robot compared to the squid from Watchmen's ending Brad Bird reportedly denies Watchmen influence despite many parallels Jack-Jack and Supporting Characters (54:00 - 01:03:00) Jack-Jack has godlike powers (17 documented in the sequel) Compared to Franklin Richards from Fantastic Four Jack-Jack helps defeat Syndrome at the end of the film Edna Mode (voiced by Brad Bird) praised as an excellent character Her role as the Q-like gadget designer who incorporates fashion The group discusses superhero costume design elements Frozone and his 'Where's my super suit?' scene mentioned Animation and Film Context (01:03:00 - 01:16:40) The film's animation shows its age (from 2004) but holds up well due to stylization Technical limitations discussed (water effects, foliage, crowds) The hosts note the film predates the MCU (2008) and Nolan's Batman (2005) The Incredibles came at a transition point for superhero cinema The movie successfully balances superhero action with relatable family dynamics Character designs discussed (Mr. Incredible's face based on a Roman helmet) Final Battle and Themes (01:16:40 - 01:26:47) The Omnidroid battle showcases the family working together effectively Team power moves highlight each character's abilities and their coordination The question of 'do we need superheroes?' explored through the final battle Dash's athletic participation at the end (coming in second) compared to Superman hiding his abilities The film doesn't fully resolve questions about exceptional people's place in society The ending shows balance between superhero and ordinary life is beneficial Conclusions and Wrap-Up (01:26:47 - 01:38:04) The Underminer appearance sets up the sequel and references Mole Man from Fantastic Four The hosts appreciate the film's commentary on superhero tropes ('you caught me monologuing') The movie works well as both a superhero film and a family story Discussion about how the film has aged and its historical context in superhero cinema Podcast information and social media contacts shared Recommendation for Books that Burn podcast from the Certain POV network
As Lent enters its most solemn phase, Mother Miriam calls us to refocus our hearts on the mystery that changes everything: Christ's Passion, death, and resurrection. In this special Passiontide episode, Mother Miriam reflects on the beauty of the Church's ancient traditions and urges listeners to embrace this sacred time with deeper intensity. She also raises a concern that many Catholics quietly share—the confusion and division caused by the Church's two liturgical calendars. One of the best episodes of ECW Hardcore TV took place on June 6th, 1997! ECW Wrestlepalooza 1997 just happened and we are looking at 3 matches from that show. First, Tommy Dreamer and Raven have their final battle as Raven is about to head to WCW! This match was significant as Tommy had never beat Raven in a match. After the match was over Jerry Lawler invaded, alongside RVD and Sabu, and they beat up everyone from the locker room until Taz came out. Taz then challenged Sabu to a match and it's going to happen right now. Following that match, Shane Douglas got on the microphone and a 3 minute challenge match was going to happen. Taz had 3 minutes to defeat Shane Douglas and if he did so, he would become the new ECW TV Champion. This show flowed seamlessly and it's probably one of the greatest episodes of ECW Hardcore TV ever produced!
