111 Hz'in bu bölümünde insan davranışları üzerine düşünüyoruz. We're revisiting this poignant episode that highlights how important it is for parents to regularly check-in with their kids about their online activity and behaviors. Dr. Delaney Ruston interviews journalist Dashka Slater about her book, Accountable, where she writes about the true story of a social media account run by a small group of teens who posted racist memes. The account spread quickly and got edgier as it went. The book follows the account's profound effect on the teens, friends, and high school. Slater dives into issues like what compels teens to do things they know are out of bounds, such as acts of racism, the difference between guilt and shame, and transformative justice. Slater discusses methods of communicating with children about preventing doing such acts, and Dr. Ruston provides strategies for them to use when they encounter friends who do, and shares advice for parents and teens on dealing with the repercussions of online racism and the complexities of forgiveness and empathy. You've probably already walked by a stranger spreadeagled on the ground. Chances are that if you saw several people already offering assistance, you carried on walking by. That's due to what is known as the bystander effect. The bystander effect is a psychosocial phenomenon which typically crops up in emergency situations. It shows that the more other people are already intervening to help, the less likely we are to do so ourselves. On the other hand, the likelihood of stepping in increases when you're the only person present. How does psychology explain this phenomenon? What are some well-known examples? The consensus seems to be that drinking coffee has several excellent health benefits – and now there is another one you probably haven't heard before. This episode begins with the explanation. https://rightasrain.uwmedicine.org/body/food/can-your-coffee-habit-help-protect-you-skin-cancer You have most likely seen a bully in action and were maybe reluctant to intervene. After all, it's not your problem. There is actually a name for this – it's “The Bystander Effect.” It is when people don't step in and call out a bully. Why does that happen? Why do we sometimes leave it to someone else or no one at all when clearly someone has stepped over the line? Have you ever thought what would happen if you did step in? And if you do decide to intervene, what's the best way to do it so you don't escalate the situation? Here with some answers and insight is psychologist Catherine Sanderson, a professor in Life Sciences at Amherst College and the author of Why We Act: Turning Bystanders into Moral Rebels (https://amzn.to/3vfUgrs) You know what an idiom is – right? Idioms are little phrases that work their way into our conversations that help us make a point. For example, play with fire, move the goal posts or drink the Kool-Aid. Ever wonder where these phrases come from and why they take on this new meaning? Do other languages have idioms? Joining me to explore this fascinating quirk in our language is Gareth Carrol a senior lecturer and researcher in linguistics at the University of Birmingham and author of the book, Jumping Sharks and Dropping Mics: Modern Idioms and Where They Come From (https://amzn.to/3J5XnaX). Have you ever hesitated to act in an emergency, thinking someone else will surely step in? This episode peels back the layers of our psychology to reveal why our instincts might not always lead to heroism. Drawing from a segment in Daniel Kahneman's "Thinking Fast and Slow," I delve into the revealing study by Richard Nisbett and Eugene Borgida. They throw us into a scenario where an individual in distress might not receive the help they need due to the silent assumption that another bystander will intervene. It's a chilling realization that inaction can be just as impactful as the actions we take.As I recount this experiment, I also share a slice of my life from the world of retail. Recalling the all-too-common silence that follows the ring of a help bell, I connect the dots back to Nisbett and Borgida's findings. This discussion isn't just academic—it's a mirror to our daily lives, challenging us to confront our own responses in moments of need. Join me on this introspective journey, and let's explore what it truly takes to break the bystander effect and become the helper that someone, someday, might desperately need.Support the Show.► Subscribe to The Scott Townsend Show YouTube channel --- https://bit.ly/3iV8sOTThe Scott Townsend Show Merchandise https://teespring.com/stores/tsts-2Resources and Links--------------------------------------------My contact info:LinkedIn https://bit.ly/2ZZ4qweTwitter https://bit.ly/3enLDQaFacebook https://bit.ly/2Od4ItOInstagram https://bit.ly/2ClncWlSend me a text: 918-397-0327Executive Producer: Ben TownsendCreative Consultant: Matthew Blue TownsendShot with a 1080P Webcam with Microphone, https://amzn.to/32gfgAuSamson Technologies Q2U USB/XLR Dynamic Microphone Recording and Podcasting Pack https://amzn.to/3TIbACeVoice Actor: Britney McCulloughLogo by Angie Jordan https://blog.angiejordan.com/contact/Theme Song by Androzguitar https://www.fiverr.com/inbox/androzguitar

Buffy starts the episode with discussing the Bystander Effect, which says that the greater number of bystanders that are witness to an emergency situation or bully, the less likely it is for any one of them to provide help for the person in distress. She uses this as a jumping off point as a call for us to take radical responsibility for our lives, even when it is inconvenient; even when it is difficult; even when it is easier to shirk it.  Wanting it is not always enough - so what can we do to bridge the gap between wanting it and having it? In Episode 213, I teach you exactly what you should be doing in your after class announcements. This will apply to you, whether you're teaching group Asana classes, a Meditation Teacher or a Studio Owner. Here's why I'm so passionate about this: In my first year teaching yoga full-time, I drove 40,000 miles in one city, teaching class after class — and that year, I only made $15k. Why? Because I didn't have the business skills I needed to make sure the time I spent teaching turned into more revenue.I didn't have anyone telling me "You need marketing and selling skills, and you need to create an irresistible offer." I was just hoping my after class announcement would make people want to do a Private Session with me, or join a Retreat with me. But just saying the logistics of your next offer out loud will not generate revenue. When you do these announcements right, your students will rave about their experience at your studio or in your class, they'll refer more people to you, and your sales will increase!IN THIS EPISODE, YOU'LL LEARN:How to differentiate delivering from sellingWhat most Yoga businesses do wrong hereWhy the Bystander Effect keeps people from jumping on your after class announcementExactly what you need to make a clear, well-crafted offerHow many logistics to include in your announcement (hint: zero)Get more!Follow @thebusinessofyoga on Instagram  The Business of Yoga Course and Membership is open now. In this episode, I interview journalist Dashka Slater about her new book, Accountable, where she writes about the true story of a social media account run by a small group of teens who posted racist memes. The account spread quickly and got edgier as it went. The book follows the account's profound effect on the teens, friends, and high school. In my interview with Slater, I dive into issues like what compels teens to do things they know are out of bounds, such as acts of racism, the difference between guilt and shame, and transformative justice. I talk to Slater about methods of communicating with our children about preventing doing such acts, and I provide strategies for them to use when they encounter friends who do. I also share advice for parents and teens on dealing with the repercussions of online racism and the complexities of forgiveness and empathy. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Loudly Give Up, Don't Quietly Fade, published by Screwtape on November 14, 2023 on LessWrong. I. There's a supercharged, dire wolf form of the bystander effect that I'd like to shine a spotlight on. First, a quick recap. The Bystander Effect is a phenomenon where people are less likely to help when there's a group around. When I took basic medical training, I was told to always ask one specific person to take actions instead of asking a crowd at large. "You, in the green shirt! Call 911!" (911 is the emergency services number in the United States.) One habit I worked hard to instill in my own head was that if I'm in a crowd that's asked to do something, I silently count off three seconds. If nobody else responds, I either decide to do it or decide not to do it and I say that. I like this habit, because the Bystander Effect is dumb and I want to fight it. Several times now it's pushed me to step forward in circumstances where I otherwise wouldn't have, thinking maybe someone else would. If everyone else had this habit, the Bystander Effect wouldn't be a thing. II. There's a more pernicious, insidious version that I haven't managed to build a habit against. Imagine a medical emergency. Someone is hurt, and someone steps forward to start applying first aid. They call out "Someone call 911!" There's a moment's pause as the crowd looks at each other, wondering if someone will. Then someone in a green shirt steps forward and says "I'll do it!" and pulls out their phone. Huzzah! The Bystander Effect is defeated! Then twenty minutes later the first aid person asks "Hey, did 911 say how long they were going to take?" and the guy in the green shirt says "What? Oh, right, yeah, I didn't have any cell service so I've been reading an ebook on my phone." This Dire Bystander Effect would defeat my habit. If someone else said that they were calling 911, I wouldn't also step forward to call 911. I'd go and do something else, maybe making the victim more comfortable or holding things for the person applying first aid or possibly even go along with my day if it looked like the circumstances were well in hand. This story is an exaggeration for dramatic effect. I don't think anyone would quietly wait around after saying they would call emergency services, not having done so. It might be worse though! If the person in the green shirt failed to get cell service, they might walk away from the scene looking for more signal without telling anyone. That last part isn't an exaggeration by the way. It is a thing people sometimes think. If you are ever in an emergency and are unsure if someone has already called emergency services, call them twice, it's fine, it's better to be sure. III. Less dramatic versions of this are sneakier. If you've undertaken to do something that isn't an emergency, that's going to take a month or two anyway, and it isn't super important, it's just something someone wanted done. . . Well. It's easy for that task to constantly wind up on the bottom of your to-do list, to not quite get finished, to get less and less attention over time. It must not be that important anyway, it's not that big of a problem. Or maybe it is important and you're going to get to it tomorrow. . . next week. . . soon. People have probably forgotten about it anyway. That isn't even always wrong! Maybe the new things on your plate are more important or circumstances have changed! But uh, it's also possible that the metaphorical victim is still there, wondering when the ambulance is going to get there, and someone else would step up if they knew you weren't actively working on it. The habit I have been trying to instill in myself is this; when I have publicly stepped forward to take up a task, I set dates for myself when new things will get done, and if task has slipped low enough in my priorities t...

He said, “You are the salt of the Earth.” This weekend, discover how “salty” believers have changed and are changing the world.SERIES: The Jesus PeopleIn the late 60s and early 70s, a counter-cultural Christian movement began in California among young people called the Jesus People. It happened at the height of the sexual revolution and drug culture of the time, young people sincerely hungered for the supernatural and were finding it in Jesus even when they couldn't find it in the institutional church. In this series, we want to ask the question, "What does it mean to be the Jesus People today in a world where people seem to have lost their way and find the institutional church irrelevant?"DISCUSSION QUESTIONS 1. Everyone at some point in their life wants to make a difference. In what ways do you hope your life has made a difference? Why do some people give up on this dream? What would you say to someone who is discouraged or feels like they have nothing to contribute? 2. Pastor Keith talked about three qualities of salt; it preserves, it purifies and it seasons. Likely, Jesus had all three ideas in mind when comparing His followers to salt. How do believers best influence the brokenness of our world today? What really works? What repels people? What Christians have you known who are great examples of “salty” believers – who embody and live out a compelling, life-giving alternative to the systems of this world? 3. Pastor Keith gave several examples of “salty” difference makers who were all Christ followers. What stood out most to you in these stories? How is your life like them or unlike them? In what ways might God use your own story, struggles, and life learnings to be a blessing to others? 4. The Bystander Effect is a very real social phenomenon that occurs when people are in a group and something happens that requires action. Most people assume others will respond to the call for help, action, or decision. This happens in church all the time. Because there are so many who hear the same message, we assume others will step up and volunteer, others will sacrifice and help with a financial need, or others will do something about a challenging message – but we never think of someone as ourselves. Unless and until we understand the bystander effect, we will effectively tune out challenges intended for us personally by deflecting responsibility onto others. Has this ever happened to you? What can you do to safeguard against it? How will you apply this message today?

This is a continuation of my conversation with Dr. Stephanie Preston, and she covers what she means by an altruistic urge (we are hardwired to help when someone is clearly vulnerable, there isn't high risk, we have the skill, and we know we can make a difference). The bystander effect and burnout can be combatted by understanding this altruistic urge and recognizing that it is not empathy that leads to burnout but rather a lack of controllability. Dr. Stephanie Preston is a researcher of emotions and decision making, and she talks about how not displaying emotion is also a type of emotional contagion and is likely a consequence of the fact that we don't want to transmit out-of-control or negative emotions in a professional setting. It's a fascinating peek into altruism, empathy, and feelings. Dr. Stephanie D. Preston, PhD is Professor of Psychology and University of Michigan Faculty Ombuds. She received her PhD from the University of California, Berkeley. Her research is on the interface between emotion and decision making, focusing on how people process others' emotions and how this affects offerings of help and on how people allocate resources. She has written a book titled, The Altruistic Urge: Why We're Driven to Help Others.

In 1995, this happened to me when my one-year-old child reacted violently to a taste of peanut butter. We sought treatments such as were available at the time and urgently adapted to a state of hypervigilance. I studied nutrition and energy-based modalities looking for ways to recover. At the same time, I scoured the medical literature. Welcome to our podcast, where we discuss important social issues and current events. In this episode, we will be exploring the bystander effect and how increased social media and camera phone usage is making this phenomenon more prevalent. The bystander effect is a social phenomenon in which individuals are less likely to intervene in an emergency situation when there are others present. This phenomenon has been studied extensively, and its implications are far-reaching, including in situations of violence, crime, and accidents. In this episode, coach Ashlie Walton and Detective Walton will be speaking with experts on the bystander effect to explore how increased social media and camera phone usage is making this phenomenon more problematic. We will discuss how social media platforms and camera phones have made it easier for individuals to be bystanders in situations that require intervention. Furthermore, we will explore how social media and camera phones can also be used as tools for positive intervention and advocacy. Ken Brown: The Bystander Effect

Shaping Opinion

Professor Ken Brown joins Tim to talk about a psychological phenomenon you see any time you log on to social media and no one is helping a victim of harassment or violence. It's called the bystander effect. Ken teaches organizational psychology at the University of Iowa, and is perhaps best known for a TED talk he gave on the bystander effect. Why don't people step forward and help when someone is in need? That answer may not be what you think. https://traffic.libsyn.com/secure/shapingopinion/Bystander_Effect_II_auphonic.mp3 On March 13th, 1964, a 28-year-old woman named Kitty Genovese was coming home from her late-night shift as a manager at Ev's Eleventh Hour Bar in Queens, New York. She lived in a second-floor apartment in a building next to the Long Island Railroad in Queens. That was when she was brutally stabbed to death. The story of Kitty's murder made headlines for the shear brutality of it, but that wasn't all. When Kitty arrived at her apartment and parked her car around 3:15 a.m., a man named Winston Moseley attacked Kitty with a hunting knife. Police would later learn that he was wandering the city looking for a random victim. When he spotted Kitty in her own car, he decided to follow her home. When Moseley parked his car and approached Kitty, she ran towards her apartment building. That's when the man stabbed her twice in the back. At that hour of the morning, most people nearby were asleep. But some people were awake, and others were awakened by Kitty's cries for help. But that wasn't the end of it. Kitty had made it back to her feet and collapsed in the lobby of her apartment building at the base of the stairs. Mosely had fled the scene right after Kitty's initial cries for help, but 10 minutes later, he came back. He found Kitty almost unconscious in a hallway near the rear of the building. This is where he raped her, stole $49 and inflicted her fatal stab wounds. The entire crime persisted for 30 minutes. At the time, the New York Times reported that no one had done anything to save Kitty. This was the headline from that front-page story: “37 Who Saw Murder Didn't Call the Police; Apathy at Stabbing of Queens Woman Shocks Inspector.” Later it would be learned that the story wasn't completely right. The number of witnesses was less than 37, and a few people did phone police. But that wasn't enough to save her life. That case – the case of the murder of Kitty Genovese – remains relevant today because it was the first to shed light on a psychological phenomenon now known as the “bystander effect.” Links Ken Brown, University of Ioway (website) Kitty Genovese, The History Channel If You're in Danger, Will Bystanders Help?, Greater Good Magazine The 'bystander effect' is real - but research shows that when more people witness violence, it's more likely someone will step up and intervene, The Conversation The Vulture and the Little Girl, Rare Historical Photos About this Episode's Guest Ken Brown Ken Brown, Ph.D., is the Tippie Children Professor of Management and Entrepreneurship at the Tippie College of Management at the University of Iowa. And he's a professor of Educational Policy and Leadership Studies.

Strange and thought provoking episode today! In the 1940s, 50s, and early 60s, animal behavior researcher John B Calhoun ran a number of experiments on rodents regarding how their behavior would be affected by increased urbanization if all their basic needs were made. The results were terrifying. Crowded rats and mice became increasingly violent and lost their reproductive instincts to the point that eventually, the utopia went extinct after enduring a final phase full of random violent attacks, apathy, cannibalism and more. Could the increased urbanization of humanity also lead to our species' extinction as Calhoun warned?  Or are we humans too different from rodents to presume that what happens to mice and rat would also happen to humans? I found today's episode one of the most thought provoking we've done in quite  some time. Seems like there is always new research coming out about the benefits of coffee. This episode begins with another one – and maybe one you haven't heard before. You just need to drink 3 cups a day – or more. https://rightasrain.uwmedicine.org/body/food/can-your-coffee-habit-help-protect-you-skin-cancer Probably everyone has been witness to a bully or some other inappropriate behavior and didn't intervene. And later regretted it. It's called “The Bystander Effect.” Why don't people step in and callout bullies? Why do we leave it to someone else or no one at all? What would happen if we did step in when we see bad behavior in others? What's the best way to intervene and not escalate a situation? Here to discuss and answer these questions is psychologist Catherine Sanderson, a professor in Life Sciences at Amherst College and the author of Why We Act. Listen as I discuss how summer weather can impact your mood and state of mind. https://www.livescience.com/21431-hot-temperatures-mood.html Idioms are interesting. They are those little phrases that work their way into our language to help us make a point. For example, play with fire, drink the Kool-Aid, move the goal posts or drop the mic. Where do these phrases come from? Why do some idioms last and others don't? Do other languages also have idioms or is English unique in that way.
