We're headed north of the border to Hamilton, Ontario to chat with Nick DeLuco, Senior Vice President & General Manager of TD Coliseum. This is opening week for the venue, which will open after an extensive $300 million renovation by Oak View Group this Friday, November 21, with a kick off concert with Paul McCartney. We chat with Nick about the arena's place in the Golden Horseshoe market, Oak View Group's investment in the cutting-edge venue, and their music-first approach to the design and strategies. We talk about the balance of paying homage to the 40 year history while also blazing a new path with innovations – including unique floor level suites built into the lower bowl. As they approach their opening, we hear about how the team worked together on the project and their focus on being present during the busy opening week. Nick also walks us through his venueland history, from taking Sports Management in school and wanting to be a sports agent to an internship at his hometown venue in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario to his first job post graduation in ticketing in Mississauga. We talk about his path to opening new buildings in Kingston and New Brunswick as well as his time spent in Edmonton overseeing live events. In the riverside border town of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., Jewish community leaders are stepping up to run programming for the 35 member families of Congregation Beth Jacob. The synagogue—gearing up to celebrate its 80th anniversary next year—can no longer afford to hire clergy to conduct High Holiday services. Instead, over the next month, the prayers will be all DIY, led by local congregant Tova Arbus, who's filling the shoes of her father, Jeff Arbus, a former union activist. But while the younger Arbus prepares to take the reins, she recognizes that even her father only led the High Holidays prayers once, last year. For decades, he led everything else, including Shabbat services. This year, Jeff is facing sudden medical issues. Another of the shul's former presidents, 80-year-old U.S. Army veteran Gil Cymbalist, died on Sept. 8, after battling ALS. With the older generation passing the baton, Arbus is determined to help revitalize Jewish life in her hometown. She's helping to prep pre-teens for their bar mitzvahs; she's holding family Jewish education classes; she's even working with the City of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. to mount a new exhibit on Jewish life, in honour of Beth Jacob's upcoming 80th anniversary in 2026. Tova Arbus joins host Ellin Bessner on today's episode of The CJN's North Star podcast to discuss her efforts to sustain the Jewish community's future ahead of a hectic High Holiday season. Locals call it "The Soo." Sault Ste. Marie is the name of two cities that sit across the St. Mary's River from each other. One in Michigan and one in Ontario, Canada. For Michigan, this is its oldest city and was established by the French in 1671. The Upper Peninsula almost seems to be in a different world when it comes to the state of Michigan as it is separated from the mainland of the state by not only water, but also the island of Mackinac. The paranormal is strong here. For 16 years, the Michigan ParaCon was held in the Soo and the hosts of that continue to run paranormal events there. That's because there are several haunted locations here. Join us for the history and hauntings of Sault Ste. Marie! We'd love your feedback! What resonated for you in this episode? What do you want more of?One of the most devastating consequences of coercive control and domestic abuse is the stripping away of the victim's identity and sense of self. The emotional and psychological abuse leads victims to feel incapable of doing even small tasks that may once have felt easy, let alone the belief that one can follow their dreams. What if finding a way to take that first step towards your dreams could catapult your healing? On this episode of The Rising Beyond Podcast, I talk with Lola REid Allin on how following her dreams to become a pilot allowed her to escape her abusive marriage in a time when it was shocking for a woman to leave her husband. In this episode we also discuss the harmful culture in the male dominated profession of aviation and what leads to this harassment and “boys club” culture.Lola shares her reason for writing her memoir, HIGHWAY to the SKY: An Aviator's Journey. It is a way that she can bring light to the many women's issues that prevent women from living out their dreams.About Lola: Lola Reid Allin is a survivor, former Airline Transport Pilot, pilot examiner, and the first female flight instructor at two flight schools (BC & ON), and the first woman to fly the Twin Otter (DHC6/300) for a scheduled air service, commemorated on the Wall of Women in Aviation History at the Bush Plane Museum in Sault Ste Marie. In addition, she is a SCUBA Dive Master, and an award-winning author and photographer whose work has appeared in many notable local, national, and international publications, including National Post, Globe & Mail, Toronto Star, National Geographic, Santa Fe Centre for Photography, Verge Magazine, & Grapevine Magazine. To promote the role of women in aviation and to encourage other females to consider aviation careers, Lola is a speaker with the Northern Lights Aero Foundation & the Eastern Ontario 99s Education & Outreach Committee. In 2022, she and Robin Hadfield, the International 99s President, created the New Track Scholarship, an annual award for female pilots.Connect with Lola: https://www.lolareidallin.com/https://www.facebook.com/Lola.Reid.Allin.Pilot/https://www.instagram.com/lola.reid.allin/https://www.linkedin.Please leave us a review! Not only do you get a banger of a view from the tallest spot in the Soo, but you might also get to meet this guy, who will regale you with historical facts and stories, might throw down in three languages, and will definitely instill a love for all the history in this area, just by his infectious nature.Learn more about the Tower of History at Sault Historic Sites at saulthistoricsites.com.Follow John and Amy:Website: amyandgonzo.comFacebook at https://www.facebook.com/behindthemittenTwitter at @BehindTheMittenInstagram at @BehindTheMittenRadio Affiliates: amyandgonzo.com/general-5
This weekend takes us ABOVE the mitten, as we travel across the Mighty Mac and head to one of our favorite places in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, Sault Ste Marie."Where Michigan history was born" is an apt tagline for this city that resides along the St. Mary's River, as it was founded way back in 1668 by one of Michigan's favorite explorers, Fr. Jacques Marquette. Today, the "Soo" is best known for their famous locks, which transport some of the biggest freighters in all the land between Lake Superior and Lake Huron. Our good friend Linda Hoath from the Sault Ste Marie Visitor's Bureau kicks off the show, and as one of our regular guests, you know we'll have a great time. Linda shares a little about what makes this community so special, she is a life-long resident, and a true advocate for all that this area has to offer. Linda also gives us an update on the incredibly large construction project that is underway, as they transform two of the older, smaller locks into one gigantic one that can handle larger boats. It's quite an engineering marvel. To get a great view of this project, we recommend a trip to the top, 210 feet up in the air, at the Tower of History. We stopped by for the very first time and while we were very impressed by that panoramic view, we were even more impressed with the curator, Paul Sabourin. Sometimes you get very lucky and walk into an interview and strike absolute gold, which is exactly what happened when we met Paul. A passionate storyteller, this man regaled us with stories in three languages: English, French and Ojibway. Now that I'm thinking about it, he might have also told a joke in German at one point. Head to the Tower to learn more about the Native Americans in this area and the settlers that came later, meet Mr. Paul himself and check out that absolutely incredible view.In order to see the locks in action, you just have to do a boat tour, and our friends at the Original Soo Locks Boat Tours are some of the best. Celebrating 90 years of being on the water, the Original Tours are open every day of the summer. Shiela Marchand joins us, she is currently the business manager for the company, but she started off at the ticket counter when she was in college. Best part of her job is giving tours, she loves that they do live narration on each and every tour, so you can ask all the important questions you have about the locks. The Original Soo tour is a must do when in da Soo.Finally, we catch up with our good friends Ken and Wilda Hopper, who own the uber-popular Bird's Eye Outfitters. If an adventure is what you are looking for in the Soo, Bird's Eye is where you want to go. They can help you plan a mountain bike trip, a fantastic hike, a paddling adventure, or even a trip in a kayak right through the locks. These guys, and girls, are absolute experts, so they'll make sure you have not just the right gear and equipment, but also that you'll have a great time. This is also THE spot for coffee and a bit of nosh in the morning, or for a beer and a sandwich at lunch. Always bustling, Bird's Eye is one of our favorite spots to stop in the Soo.Affiliates:*8 a.m. Saturdays on WBRN - 1460 AM and 107.7 FM in Big Rapids*8 a.m. Saturdays on Kalamazoo Talk Radio 1360 WKMI*8 a.m. Saturdays on WILS-1320 AM in Lansing* 9 a.m. Saturdays on 92.1 Grand Haven's Favorite, WGHN-FM*10 a.m. Saturdays 95.3 WBCK-FM in Battle Creek*10 a.m. Saturdays on News/Talk/Sports 94.9 WSJM in Benton Harbor*4 p.m. Saturdays on WIOS "The Bay's Best!" - 1480 AM & 106.9 FM in Tawas / East Tawas*7 a.m. Sundays on the following Black Diamond Broadcasting stations:-WCFX - CFX Today's Hits (95.3) in Mt. On October 23rd, 2023 Bob Hallaert, a man with a history of intimate partner violence, shot and killed Angie Sweeney days after she broke up with him. They'd been together for about three years. What happened that day didn't just shatter the Sweeney family, it shattered Sault Ste Marie. And many believe what happened to Angie could have been stopped. Intimate Partner Violence is at a record high in Canada. On average, a woman is killed by an intimate partner every six days in this country. After a man killed three women in Renfrew County, Ontario in 2015, a month-long inquest made 86 recommendations to end intimate partner violence. The recommendations spanned everything from ways to improve the justice system, the criminal code, early interventions for victims and perpetrators, more and better resources for those in danger, and better police and public education. The first recommendation was to declare IPV an epidemic, which so far the Ontario and Federal governments have refused to do. On this week's Storylines, journalist Katie Nicholson heads to Sault Ste Marie where Angie's friends, family, and community have come together to grieve, but also to act. Reported by Katie Nicholson. Produced by Acey Rowe. Story editing by Julia Pagel and Liz Hoath. Storylines is part of the CBC Audio Doc Unit
Last October, five people across two homes in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., were found dead, including Angie Sweeney and her ex — the man who pulled the trigger. Sweeney's friends and family believe her death could have been prevented if recommendations from an inquest into a similar killing had been implemented. In her documentary Angie's Angels, CBC's Katie Nicholson visits Sault Ste. Marie to hear calls for changes to how cases of intimate partner violence are treated.

Now, the city has returned to the French-English controversy but with a very different outcome.
