Are you robbing your children of the chance to make decisions? Dr. Roger Smith emphasizes that decisiveness is a critical character trait that must be developed through practice. Using the simple example of choosing between two paths, he explains why parents must intentionally provide opportunities for decision-making—even small ones, like choosing the color of a cup. Learn how to let your children face the low-impact consequences of their choices (like in board games) and how to talk them through potential outcomes without rescuing them from mild discomfort. This training builds the capacity to navigate life's complex options. Visit me at: https://rogersmithmd.com/ This has been a production of ThePodcastUpload.com
Do you wish your child considered others more often? Dr. Roger Smith defines thoughtfulness as putting other people's needs on the priority list—a desirable trait we can actively help children develop. This episode gives parents two simple, routine exercises: Looking Backward (Bedtime): Ask your child to reflect on their day and identify someone they wish they could have helped or made things better for. This encourages empathy and perspective. Looking Forward (Start of Day/Activity): Challenge your child as they enter a public space (like a store or church) to "look for people you can make smile or make a difference for." This promotes intentional, positive interaction. Learn how to weave these practices into your daily life to cultivate thoughtfulness and inspire an outward-focused mindset in your kids. We are back where we started, in more ways than one, with songwriter, artist, producer, and musician's musician – Charlie Peacock. In this comprehensive conversation, recorded in person at Charlie's home studio in Nashville, JJT and CP revisit his earliest days as a young musician in California. The release of his recent memoir, Roots and Rhythm, and an EP worth of previously unheard recordings from 1981 called The Kahne Sessions, frames this story of formation and transformation. We then follow the man as he becomes one of the most successful producers in the history of pop music. A special 30-minute Jukebox feature traces the evidence – from his earliest production work with The Choir and The 77s, to a Top 40 pop breakthrough, his discovery and launch of one of the great 90s alternative rock bands, and multiple Grammy Awards in the 2000s in the Americana and Folk space. This may be our longest show yet (and it features over 60 musical cuts), but when considering the work of someone like Chuck, it seems more than fitting. His voice, both literally and as experienced through his piano, pen, and studio control board, has done as much to shape our concepts and imagination about the redemptive potential of art in a broken yet beautiful world as just about any other artist. So, sit back, relax, and let the words and the music wash over you as we give thanks for the gift that is Charlie Peacock. PART IITune in for 'The Media Democracy Blues' hosted by Roger Smith during Crazy Words, Crazy Tune on WRFI Community Radio. This special two-hour interview with the eloquent media scholar and historian Victor Pickard originally aired on Friday, October 3, from 12-2pm in the regular time slot of “Crazy Words, Crazy Tune.”Victor Pickard teaches mass communication and political economy at the Annenberg School at U Penn. His first major book, America's Battle for Media Democracy (2015), concentrates on the key decisions made in the 1940s that set in stone the foundations of the commercial, corporate-dominated media system that continues to bedevil us today. Pickard is also the current board chair of the media policy reform group Free Press, which was co-founded by his mentor, Robert W. McChesney. America's Battle for Media Democracy makes a great bookend to McChesney's first book, which covers the spirited radio reform movement of the 1920s and ‘30s that tried and failed to secure a non-commercial space for labor and civic groups on the airwaves.Because the Crazy Words, Crazy Tune weekly show is devoted to the popular culture of that period of history—and because the politics of media has been a lifelong obsession of show host Roger Smith, he was especially excited and proud to interview Victor and delve into this narrative as well as its present-day ramifications.
