In our thirtieth episode of Unsolved Canadian Mysteries, Christina Koutsi, Dylan Fairman and Kenton de Jong discuss the disappearance and subsequent murders of several men from Toronto's Gay Village during the early 2010s. The Toronto Police Service were unequipped to handle these murders and were unfamiliar with the LGBTQA+ community they were taking part in. All signs pointed to a man named Bruce McArthur, but McArthur was a senior citizen, who landscaped for a living and volunteered as Santa Claus in the malls. However, as the investigation continued, more of McArthur's life became known to the authorities. From a tough childhood, a messy divorce, bankruptcy, a troubled son, and more than one report of him being violent or aggressive, the police began to wonder if McArthur was involved, and if so, what happened to these missing men. As more and more men went missing, the search continued and the answer seemed further and further from the norm. Come learn about a Canadian serial killer like no other!

Manchester Pride, a large-scale music event with huge headliners and a packed schedule filled with music, dance and drag performances, returned last weekend. The city was filled with colour and thousands of people turned up to celebrate in Gay Village. But this year, Manchester Pride also faced fresh criticism over its relationship with Booking.com, a key sponsor of the festival who have faced criticism for listing rooms in the occupied West Bank, and many, including performers, withdrew from attending the festival. The involvement of big corporate sponsors like Booking.com, and the direction that Pride has taken more broadly, becoming more like a festival than anything resembling its revolutionary roots, has raised a crucial question: should Pride be a party or a protest? Mollie sits down with our new editor, Shannon Keating, to discuss.Recommendations:Alt Pride Festival 2024, Platt Fields Market Garden, 7th and 8th September - tickets hereShould Manchester Pride be a party or a protest? True Crime Tuesday presents Killer Queens; Bruce McArthur: The Toronto Gay Village Murders with Author, Alan R. Warren! In January 2019, Bruce McArthur, a 67-year-old Canadian landscaper, was convicted of eight first-degree murders and sentenced to life imprisonment. During the seven years between 2010 and 2017, McArthur preyed on men from Toronto's gay community and managed to avoid any detection by carefully cutting the bodies of his victims into pieces and burying them in the pot planters and grounds of his landscaping customers. His victims included Selim Esen, Andrew Kinsman, Majeed Kayhan, Dean Lisowick, Soroush Mahmudi, Skandaraj Navaratnam, Abdulbasir Faizi, and Kirushna Kanagaratnam. Additional charges were later placed on McArthur after an expanded investigation of hundreds of missing persons and deaths during those years. Author of the Killing Queens series, Alan R. Warren, joins TCT to talk about the slow changes in Canada's system and their attitudes towards homosexuals in the justice system. He also discusses the gross injustices that were allowed to be committed to the community in the period in question. In part 2 of our Canadian serial killer mini series, we cover the case of Bruce McArthur, a 66-year-old self employed landscaper who was arrested in January 2018 and eventually charged with the murder and dismemberment of eight men in Toronto's gay village from 2010-2017. Bruce left his family and suburban life behind after coming out in his 40's and relocating to Toronto in the late 1990's. Over the next several years, his violent side began to emerge which resulted in a few run-ins with the law that should have caused some red flags for authorities. But ultimately, he was able to fly under the police's radar to kill eight men and discard their dismembered remains without any suspicion. This is the story of an entire community stalked by a serial killer for nearly a decade, the police who let him slip through their fingers multiple times and the men whose disappearances fell through the cracks.FIND US ON SOCIAL MEDIA:Instagram: @crimefamilypodcastTwitter: @crimefamilypod1Facebook: Crime Family PodcastEmail: crimefamilypodcast@gmail.comBecome a patron here:https://www.patreon.com/CrimefamilypodcastGet your Crime Family Merch here: https://www.redbubble.com/shop/ap/123775076EPISODE RESOURCES:"Making a Serial Killer" (Film Rise, YouTube):https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nkwFad3XCh8"A Killer's Mistake- Bruce McArthur" (YouTube):https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P5g8pBqo8H0Bruce McArthur case: Here's what we know about the 8 victims (Global News):https://globalnews.ca/news/4901499/serial-killer-bruce-mcarthur-8-victims/Man who disappeared from Toronto's Gay Village 'led double life,' wife learned (CBC News):https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/abdulbasir-faizi-project-houston-missing-bruce-mcarthur-1.4579635"W5: The First Suspect in the Toronto Serial Killings" (YouTube):https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T2MZR39JRBg"W5: The first known survivor of serial killer Bruce McArthur"(YouTube):https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=en-bXR44HBc"VIDEO | Police interview with Bruce McArthur after 2016 arrest for assault" (The Toronto Star- YouTube):https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2iE-DvYIFgk&t "From Project Houston to Bruce McArthur's life sentence: A timeline of what we know" (CBC News)Support the show

Luke Lal yanked the victim's penis and 'punched' him in two separate attacks, but was spared jail both times. The victim was left with a painful laceration to his genitals following the first assault at his former home in Alcester Road, Moseley in January 2020. Between 2010 and 2017 Bruce McArthur killed eight men in the city of Toronto. Despite the imploring of families and friends, despite two separate task forces looking into the missing men, it would take investigators nearly a decade to track a serial killer who had been arrested and detained for assaults and banned from Toronto's Gay Village. Using court records and investigative research this episode will take a look at the murders, the missing men, and the missed opportunities that allowed Bruce McArthur to kill without detection. Between 201 0 and 2017 at least eight men would go missing in and around Toronto's Gay Village that would end up being a part of this case. Those eight disappearances, and their connection, for whatever reason, would fly under the radar of police who seemed to view most of these as just missing men who probably had reasons to go missing. Even though the community at large was certain that there was a serial killer in their midst, taking victims and making them disappear, police would whole-heartedly disagree. Even though the majority of the men that would eventually be tied to Bruce McArthur had many things in common, including age, ethnicity, background, and marginalized status, police either failed to accept that this was the work of one suspect, or multiple suspects working together, until it was far too late. This week we look at how everything FINALLY came together to investigate, capture and put that serial killer behind bars. A total of eight men went missing from the Church and Wellesley area of Toronto. This area is known because it really does fall in the heart of the LGBT-oriented enclave within Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The investigation into the disappearances has come under intense scrutiny over the years and would eventually lead to the arrest, charge and guilty plea of a 66 year old, self employed man from Toronto. The man is the most prolific KNOWN serial killer within Toronto and he is also the oldest known serial killer in Canada. In this episode, part 2 on Bruce McCarthur, we cover the victims that have been attributed to him and talk about their stories a little bit and their lives. One of Canada's most notorious serial killers is Bruce McArthur. Currently in prison and serving a life sentence for murdering eight men, McArthur terrorized Toronto's gay community by targeting and killing gay men who frequented the Gay Village neighborhood of the city. Most of his victims were of Middle Eastern and South Asian descent, and they had not yet come out; their sexuality was not known by their relatives. But from 2010-2017, McArthur apparently knew, and hunted them down for it. The 69-year-old landscaper had also dated and been in sexual relationships with some of his victims. This is the story of how he was finally captured. Most violence in Toronto's Church and Wellesley district, The Gay Village, was directed at gay men by homophobes. This time it was one of their own.
This week we're celebrating PRIDE MONNTTHHH with a serial killer who target brown gay men. How uplifting! Bruce McCarthur was well known and liked within the gay village of Toronto. Owner of landscaping company and local Santa, no one could imagine the horror he was inflicting on the gay community. As man after man went missing in the Toronto gay village, the LGBTQIA community started putting pressure on the Toronto police force to take notice. NO ONE was looking into these disappearances or taking them seriously. Not until -- a WHITE gay men goes missing. HMM... Listen in as Jeff goes over the entire wild story of how they finally catch this serial killer AND how they find the bodies...it's INSANE!

People have been going missing from Toronto's Gay Village since the 70s. The gay community claims that the police are not taking the disappearances seriously enough. The pieces start to fall into place when one man goes missing and leaves a diary entry for that day saying “Bruce”. Police survey a Bruce McArther, a gardener and mall Santa. When they see him enter his flat with another man, they break the door down only to find a man handcuffed to his bed. On this episode of Bad People, presenters Julia Shaw and Sofie Hagen uncover why there are very few serial killers over the age of 40, and why people from vulnerable populations are less likely to be reported missing.Warning: This episode contains strong language and references to sexual violence, and murder.Archive credits: This episode includes audio from CBC, Global News and W5.Presenters: Dr. Julia Shaw and Sofie Hagen Producer: Caroline Steel Assistant Producer: Simona Rata Music: Matt Chandler Series Editor: Rami TzabarCommissioning Producer: Hannah Rose Commissioning Executive: Dylan Haskins Commissioning Editor: Jason PhippsBad People is a BBC Audio Science Production for BBC Sounds #BadPeople_BBC

It's the first episode of December and we unintentionally did an episode on a recent serial killer who played a mall Santa. Bruce McArthur terrorized the Gay Village of Toronto from at least 2010 to 2017. He was arrested in early 2018, and sentenced early 2019. Sunshine and Alix cover the investigation and the victims, then spend a little time talking about the politics of his particular crimes. It turns out - crime is political. For the finale of our first season, we decided to finish the same way we started - with a story that really hits home. Cherlyne recounts the haunting tale of Bruce McArthur, the serial killer of Toronto’s Gay Village. McArthur was a landscaper who spent decades in the closet, harboring bitterness and resentment. He targeted gay immigrant men - with wives and children - who would secretly meet men on dating apps. Cherlyne details her own experiences growing up as a gay woman in a religious, immigrant family and gives her own perspective of leading a double life.
For over 30 years, John Hamilton has been Mr Poptastic in Manchester’s Gay Village. Currently bar owner of Bar Pop on Canal Street, he’s perhaps best known as the founder of Poptastic, a gay club synonymous with 90s/early 2000s gay Manchester. As Viva La Diva, you can still catch John entertaining the masses at one of Canal Street’s most popular bars every single week. We spoke to John the week before Manchester Pride 2019 about the ups and downs of his first 30 years in Manchester.

In the late 2000s a spate of South Asian and Middle Eastern Men in Toronto's Gay Village vanished. The local community noticed almost immediately by the police seemed unable or unwilling to investigate the disappearances. By the time they realised that they had a serial killer on their hands the situation had escalated into horror movie proportions. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

In this season of Uncover: The Village, reporter Justin Ling reveals the history of unsolved murder and missing persons cases in Toronto's gay village.
For years, Toronto's Gay Village worried a serial killer was in their midst. Men were disappearing from the neighbourhood but police insisted there was no evidence of foul play. Then, in January 2018, police arrested Bruce McArthur for the murders of eight men and police reopened dozens of unsolved murders from the Village, dating back to 1975. Journalist Justin Ling covered this story for over five years and now he's going back to shed light on these long-forgotten murders.

Alex is joined by David Perry, CEO Investigative Solutions Network Inc to discuss the disappearance of Andrew Kinsman on top of three other missing gay men and the arrest of Bruce McArthur.
Believe it or not, Canada might be the most important country determining what porn you’re watching today! I say that because the most popular porn sites in the world were created, and continue to operate, in Canada. PornHub, YouPorn, RedTube, and Brazzers just to name a few. While Canada has an extensive porn history and shapes the ways in which we consume and distribute porn today, oftentimes it’s overlooked in favor of its flashier cousin in the south known as the San Fernando Valley. This episode looks to change all of that with a panel that was recorded at the 2018 Society for Cinema & Media Studies in Toronto. This panel features a friend of the show, Professor Peter Alilunas talking about the pornographic history of Toronto’s most famous street, Yonge st. He specifically details the history of a theater on that street known as Cinema 2000. It was a screening room showing pornography on VHS starting in 1969! The second presenter is Cait McKinney. She’s a professor in the department of communication studies at California State University at Northridge. And in her talk, she details the history of a long-lost 1984 film titled Slumber Party. The film was made by a group of radical feminist lesbians. Cait also considers the role that lesbian porn played in the feminist porn wars in the 1980s. A topic that is rarely considered. The third paper is presented by Nikola Stepić. He’s a PhD student in Concordia University’s Humanities Department. And his paper covers how gay pornography shot in Montreal’s Gay Village acted as a type of visual tourism for the neighborhood, attracting people from all over the world, helping make Montreal the gay destination is it today. The final paper is by Patrick Keilty. He’s a Professor at the University of Toronto and his presentation covers the short history of Montreal’s emergence as a global porn capital, followed by a theoretical consideration of the digital interface we as viewers are presented with as we’re surfing these various sites emanating from this city. Here is a link for the pictures from each PowerPoint. Be sure to follow along! Sasha Reid is a PHD student of Applied Psychology and Human Development at the University of Toronto. Her focus is on sexually motivated, psychopathic murderers, and her work in the field of phenomenology “aims to better understand the inner worlds and motivations of serial killers.” Sasha also created her own comprehensive database for missing persons in Canada. As she plugged in over 8,000 names and profiles, she noticed the patterns of what appeared to be a serial killer operating in Toronto’s “Gay Village,” in a neighborhood called Church and Wellesy, a community already suspicious that a killer was among them. She created a suspect profile and contacted authorities with her ideas. and a year later Bruce McArthur, a landscaper who allegedly met his victims on mobile dating apps, was arrested and charged with eight counts of first degree murder. He closely matched the profile Sasha had created from her research.
Live mix for Gay Village Roma with our signature sound - Sexy, Uplifting, Pumping Balearic Infused House Music. Enjoy! xx
Hey there everyone. Sorry about the delay, work and life had gotten in the way for a bit, but back at it. This mix was inspired from working at the Second Cup at Church and Wellesly in the heart of the Gay Village in Toronto. Sadly, the world famous "Steps" from the Kids in the Hall fame are no longer and now sits a Thai restaurant named Gingers (In honour of Ginger Monroe? Here's looking at ya Bert!!) I haven't listened to this one in a while Check out my multiply page for more of my mash ups coming soon!! email me at djgraciepresents-podcast@yahoo.com www.djgracie.podomatic.com www.djgracie.multiply.com
