As Willow is recovering from Covid, please enjoy this episode from last year, previously available only on our Patreon. Please note, the audio is not as great as our newer episodes! This goes well with this month's theme however and we think you'll enjoy it! Willow does a great job reading between the lines on this case! The murders of entire families on farms that were close to railroad tracks gripped the nation in fear in 1912. The police eventually settled on seventeen year old Clementine Barnabet and her father as suspects, accusing them of being in a Voodoo cult. Clementine (likely under duress) confessed to 35 murders. Are you interested in other episodes of Speak Your Piece? Click Here. This episode was co-produced by Brad Westwood and Chelsey Zamir, with help (sound engineering and post-production editing) from Jason Powers from the Utah State Library Recording Studio. This episode is with Brent F. Ashworth, someone who knew Mark W. Hofmann, well, or at least among those collectors and dealers that frequently bought and sold with him. Ashworth met, traded and wrangled with Hofmann, every week or every other week in person, meeting either at Hofmann's home or at a bench outside Walden Books in the Crossroads Plaza Mall in Salt Lake City (replaced in 2012 by the City Creek Center) for over four years.“Swinging for the fences,” as the old sports analogy goes, Hofmann was not content to forge and fool collectors of just Mormon, Western Americana and literary materials, he sought to deceive the nation's most distinguished and respected historical institutions, subject specialists, and rare book and antiquity dealers. He may very well have completed his diabolical transactions except for what unfolded in Salt Lake City in fall 1985, including the murders of Steven Christensen and Kathy Sheets. For a basic historical context and timeline see: David J. Whittaker, “The Hofmann Maze, the Book Review Essay With Chronology of the Hofmann Case,” BYU Studies, Vol. 29, Issue 1 (Jan 1, 1989). Ashworth opens the discussion by explaining his first interaction with Hofmann in May 1981. Ashworth had been in the SLC bookstore and head shop, the Cosmic Aeroplane, the day before he met Hofmann. A friend who worked at the store mentioned that Mark Hofmann had come in the day before and sold what he described as samples of Joseph and Hyrum Smith's hair, which piqued Ashworth's interest. At the time, Ashworth had been a well-known collector for nearly 20 years, and so he called Hofmann the next day and introduced himself as a collector and had been hoping to track down a letter signed by Joseph Smith. As it turned out Hofmann said he just so happened to have a holographic letter, signed by Joseph Smith to his wife, Emma Smith. Ashworth made a deal to obtain the letter, and the following day he received it in the mail. Ashworth now unintentionally sees that he had “ordered up” this, and many other forgeries he acquired from Hofmann. What was Hofmann's motive for his forgeries? According to a statement given by Dorie Hofmann, Mark Hofmann's wife, "he wanted publicity and money." According to Ashworth, he believes Hofmann was trying to negatively affect Mormon history, and by extension the church he had been born and raised in. Bio: Brent Ashworth is the owner of B. Ashworth's Inc., a Provo, Utah rare book, document, and artifact company, which opened in 2006. Ashworth has been a collector of rare historical materials since childhood. Concurrent to a lifetime of collecting, Ashworth has served as general counsel for a series of personal health and supplement corporations. Do you have a question? Write askahistorian@utah.gov.
David Michael Kreuger is best known by his birth name, Peter Woodcock and he is known as Canada's youngest serial killer. By the time that his life ended in 2010 he was known as a serial killer, a child rapist and was also diagnosed as a psychopath. Peter is known for crimes that actually took place many, many years apart as he would initially be incarcerated for three murders of young children in Toronto in the late 1950s. However, one of the most jarring things about Peter was that he also would commit murder in 1991 on his very first day of unsupervised release from the institution that he had been held in. Chip and Cern review Making a Murderer Season 2. If you have yet to see season 1, you will want to watch that first. Some of Chip and Cern’s best YouTube hater comments came from season 1 of Making a Murder. Season 2 got a Certified Fresh ranking on Rotten Tomatoes. Season 2 review, does Chip and Cern think Avery did the killing? That and more on this episode of the Chip and Cern Show. Both Chip and Cern felt Season 2 of Making a Murderer was a little drawn out. Episodes would have been a lot shorter if they just would have cut every excessive scene where Momma Avery was taking her pills. Chip and Cern both agree that Dassey is innocent and his confession was 100% coursed. Why wasn’t he lawyered up and how did his mom just let him be interviewed. Chip and Cern try to do some real time Googling to solve something that Chip cannot think of and is on the tip of his tongue. Chip and Cern have no choice to believe that the police were involved in Avery’s case and trying to frame him. Most of the blood in the car was more than likely planted in Chip’s mind. Chip and Cern make a few really solid CLUE references. Cern still would still say Avery is guilty. Chip says both are innocent. What did you think about Making a Murderer Season 2? Chip and Cern have some fresh new merch! Tee shirts, hoodies, iPhone and Samsung phone cases and more! Check out the Chip and Cern Merch Store at https://teespring.com/chip-and-cern-heads-unisex-tee Be sure to spread the word around and tell your friends about the Chip and Cern Show. The radio is dying, and podcasts are coming, so be ready. You can plug your phone into your car and listen when driving around. If you want a free sticker, shoot an email to chipandcernshow@gmail.com, and we will give you one. As always we appreciate you spreading the word with your friends, coworkers, family and churchgoing community members. The Hits are great into to the Chip and Cern Show, so share those!
We conclude our coverage of Making a Murderer Season 2 by exploring some of the new testing being done on the evidence & discussing where the cases stand as of 2018.

WAHOOO Holiday Episode of the White Bitch Buffet! This month we are joined by *our very first musical guest* local musician Jordan (@pancakewaitress)!!! The Bitches kick off the episode with a lil interview with Jordan to get to know her better then they just right into the swing of things. They talk Netflix Addictions highlighting The Great British Baking show and Making a Murderer Season 2 and the bad bitch that is Kathleen Zellner. Maxini mentions all the cheesey holiday things she hasn't had time to watch yet and for month 2 Laura continues to gush about the Adam Sandler stand up special 100% Fresh and expresses her extreme disappointment at the new Netflix doc Dogs, and getting the poop scared out of herself watching terrorism documentaries to cheer herself up. Jordan also reviews new movie Bohemian Rhapsody. Then the girls jump into a half-holiday themed game of "Don't Forget the Lyrics" with Max bringing it to the north pole with Christmas Carols. The episode wraps up with a new segment titled "BUT HOW/WHYYYY" where they discuss things about our crazy world that we just can't understand like $30 Kylie Lipkits. Catch all things White Bitch Buffet at whitebitchbuffet.com and subscribe in iTunes!
Eric Ray and Glenn Langenburg wrap up the final episode in their series on Making a Murderer Season 2 with all of the craziness that didn't fit in all the previous episodes. Doesn't the bloodstain shape mean that he's innocent? Or mean that he's guilty? What about the lack of fingerprints? The burn barrel? The carpet cleaner? The bullet wax? Is Teresa even dead? Is the Double Loop Podcast just another part of the grand conspiracy by the government against Steven Avery? The answer to almost all of those questions is "no", but listen anyway as we close out this case. (This episode is sponsored by IDEMIA.)
