Arlene Bynon answers a collect call. On the other end of the line is Clifford Olson: a man convicted of killing eleven children and teenagers in the 1980s. The oldest of them, eighteen. The youngest of them, nine. During years of secret phone calls from his prison cell, he tells this young journalist things he hasn't told anyone else. Decades later, Nathaniel Frum dusts off a box of old tapes inherited from his late grandfather. When he hears Arlene's voice, he knows he needs to find her. And they both know that this forgotten story needs to be told.Binge all 7 episodes of this season right now, early and ad-free, by subscribing here.

Since the beginning of the RGS our go-to guest on issues concerning the Canadian justice system, Correctional Service Canada and the Parole Board of Canada has been a former Alberta crown attorney, executive director of the Canadian Police Association, senior policy advisor to a federal Minister of Public Safety, Scott Newark. In the 90's this included so-called "Club Fed" prisons like Ferndale in B.C. which included a 9 hole golf course inmates were allowed to use. In recent years the Canadian justice system has come under significant criticism for the easy (instant) parole granted dangerous individuals, for the moving of convicted serial rapist, kidnapper and murderer Paul Bernardo from a maximum to medium-security prison. We took our program inside two federal prisons, Joyceville and Warkarth, for live shows with the inmates committees. At Joyceville, we asked the inmates committee what would happen to Clifford Olson, British Columbia serial child/youth murderer if he were transferred into the general population of the prison, as Olson had been requesting. The chairman of the committee said bluntly "he would be murdered."   Guest: Scott Newark, former Alberta crown attorney, executive director of the Canadian Police Association, senior policy advisor to a federal Minister of Public Safety Learn more about your ad choices. Etwas böses, kam in ihm hoch…   Musik Lizenziert durch Epidemicsound   Interessiert auch einmal Live dabei zu sein? Appointed Chief Economic Advisor in 2008.  Munk Senior Fellow (Economics) at MacDonald Laurier Institute. Last Sunday Vice-Admiral Mark Norman provided me his speaking notes from Friday night at the Conference of Defence Associations in which he warns Canadians our way of life is under threat because successive federal governments have not treated Canadian national security and our ability to defend ourselves as seriously as we should. We discuss with Admiral Norman as Russia prepares to host a visit by China's president Xi beginning Monday. Guest: Vice-Admiral Mark Norman. Former Commanding Officer, Royal Canadian Navy. Former Vice-Chief of the Defence Staff. When police officers are killed in the line of duty, and in recent months this has happened far too frequently in Canada, the families of the officers grieve their loss often in the public spotlight. As well, if criminal charges are laid against an accused in the death of a police officer, families must wait sometimes for years for a court judgment against an accused. Guest: Jason Harnett. Brother to Calgary Police Service Sergeant Andrew Harnett, killed New Year's Eve 2020 when dragged by a vehicle during a roadside sobriety test. The individual driving the vehicle was convicted of manslaughter last November and will face a sentencing hearing late next month. May 2, 1981. Hope, British Columbia. After spending the night at a friend's house, 16-year old Verna Bjerky leaves on a trip to visit her boyfriend, but even though she plans on hitchhiking to her destination, she never arrives. Five months later, some of Verna's personal belongings are discovered in a remote area, but there is no trace of her body. During this time period, a serial killer named Clifford Olson is charged and convicted of the murders of eleven children which took place in the Lower Mainland region of British Columbia. After he is sent to prison, Olson hints at possible involvement in Verna's disappearance, but he is never conclusively linked to her case and Verna's remains are never found. If you asked someone what they know about serial killers they will most likely mention Jack The Ripper or Jeffrey Dahmer or Ted Bundy and then perhaps branch out from there. In Canada, when you talk to people about serial killers, we have Clifford Olson, Robert Pickton and Paul Bernardo that immediately spring to mind for most. However, one thing that stands out when most people talk about serial killers is that a lot of the most prolific ones are males. You don't often hear too much about female serial killers. Some will say that that is because the stories are not usually all that “interesting” so to speak. One of Canada's most prolific serial killers is a name that most people know, but their memories only really trigger when the name is mentioned. Elizabeth Wettlaufer was found guilty of murdering eight people and attempting to murder six others. The province of British Columbia in Canada was gripped by a string of disappearances and deaths of its young people in the early 1980s. At first, the police thought maybe the missing children were runaways, and didn't spend too much of their time on the cases. However, when a 9-year-old boy disappeared and then his body was later found, the police realized that 9-year-olds don't usually run away from home. Eventually, the police would arrest Clifford Olson, who would be dubbed “The Beast of British Columbia”. Listen to this week's episode to hear about the 11 murders of children from the ages of 9-18 that Clifford confessed to, as well as other possible murders for which he may have been responsible.Join us on Facebook and IG: @HARDCORETRUECRIMEWeb: www.crimesandconsequences.com-------->Get ad-free early releases of each episode, plus over 170 exclusive Members Only episodes by going to Patreon.com/tntcrimes or joining our Apple Channel on the Apple Podcast App. ------>Sources:1) Clifford Olson's Murderpedia Page2) The Globe and Mail: "The life and death of Clifford Olson"3) CBC News: "Serial killer Clifford Olson dies"4) Global News: "Timeline: The life and crimes of Clifford Olson"5) The New York Times: Clifford Olson, Canadian serial killer, dead at 716) The Other Press: "The notorious "beast of BC": Clifford Olson

Clifford Olson can only be described as true evil.  For years, maybe even decades, he preyed on children, raping and murdering all he could find.  One police detective estimated that he committed over 1,200 sexual assaults during his criminal career.  As dark as this man's soul was, he was one of the most charismatic people in the world.  He literally talked his way out of criminal charges.  He made a career out of being a con man by day, but an gruesome predator at night.  This is his story.  SHOW NOTESThe Beast, Ryan GreenPredator, Peter Worthington
