A string of recent incidents involving the use of force has raised questions about the way in which Australian police wield power, and how these incidents are investigated. The officer who allegedly Tasered a 95-year old woman, Clare Nowland, is in court next month and is expected to fight the charges. Meanwhile, a Queensland police officer was caught on video punching and Tasering a man who'd been in a car crash, and will be investigated by an internal police standards body. Today, contributor to The Monthly and criminal defence lawyer Russell Marks, on the use of force and the relationship between the police and the public. The police officer who allegedly Tasered 95-year-old great-grandmother Clare Nowland reportedly said three words before firing: “No, bugger it”. He will now face court, where we will learn more about what led up to the incident and what contributed to Nowland's death. But the biggest question is how the police ended up confronting an elderly person in aged care, who was distressed and in need of help. Today, senior reporter for The Saturday Paper Rick Morton, on the systemic failures that surround the death of Clare Nowland. Socials: Stay in touch with us on Twitter and Instagram Guest: Senior reporter for The Saturday Paper, Rick Morton.
New South Wales police say the charges against an officer who tasered a 95-year-old woman with dementia could be upgraded after the great-grandmother died from her injuries. Clare Nowland is being remembered as a loving person and her death has sparked calls for change within the police force.
The great-grandmother tasered by New South Wales police at her nursing home last week has died. 95-year-old Clare Nowland, who had dementia, was hospitalised in a critical condition after falling and fracturing her skull during the confrontation with officers. She died "peacefully" in hospital last night. Police previously said they had been called to the facility and found Mrs Nowland holding a serrated steak knife and using a walking frame before the taser was deployed. A 33-year-old constable has been charged in relation to the incident ABC's Murray Olds spoke to Morning Report.

Yesterday, like tens of millions of Americans, I saw the brutal police murder of 31-year-old Keenan Anderson, by the LAPD in broad daylight. Keenan, like so many Black men before him, was unarmed and non-violent. At most he needed medical attention. Instead, he was Tasered to death. And we continue to see this, with new names and faces, but the same story of police violence, because this country just barely tinkers with policing when the entire system would actually need to be completely overhauled in order for us to see something totally different. It can be done. But so far not even one single large American city is willing to drastically overhaul how policing is done there. And so we continue to be the only developed nation in the world that does this, day after day, year after year, to its citizens. Let me unpack and explain it all.
