Val and Faith are joined in the studio today by Tommy Quick who has just finished cycling the four most extreme points of Australia. We all share our bike moments, and as you might expect, Tommy's was a bit more epic than the rest! We take a look at some news, including a report in The Guardian over the weekend detailing how Australia's road toll has risen over the past twelve months, particulalry for those on bikes. Followed by the City of Yarra's consultation on Wellington Street, make sure you have your say!We also catch up on the Critical Mass North held on last Friday which saw over 200 people riding to raise awareness for safer infrstcructure for cyclists in Darebin and Yarra. Check out some of the highlights at this thread. Tommy tells us the inspiration behind his challenge to ride to the four most extreme points of Australia, after he suffered a stroke at twelve years old. Discovering that staying active helped him manage the challenges he faced physically and mentally, he set himself the goal of walking the Kokoda Trail before investing in a tricycle and looking for his next challenge. Cycling over 9000kms on his recumbent tricycle Tommy's challenge was made even more difficult after he was hit by a car in 2021 and needed extensive rehabilitation to carry on his journey. So far he has raised over $100,000.00 to raise awareness of young stroke for the Stroke Foundation but you still have time to make a donation yourself! As usual we run out of time far too soon! You can follow Tommy's journey at the4points.org and find all of his social media links there too. Heads up: Tommy is hosting a fundraiser in Moonee Ponds on MOvember 11th. All the details here.

All sides are waiting for God to demonstrate his power and deliver as they meet yet another challenge entering the promised land. Will Joshua be the leader who Israel is glad to be following? Will God show up and move them forward or not? For a pre-service tip, Darrell recommends reading chapters 3 and 4 from Joshua to get more out of this week's message. Wellington City Council has admitted 17,000 street lamps across the city have the faulty adaptors prone to snapping and it's known about it since February. A report to council shows 17 of the 11kg lamps have crashed to the ground in the last four years. Something the mayor says is "a clear and unacceptable safety risk". Our reporter Ruth Hill and cameraman Angus Dreaver have the story.
A new piece of advice for Wellingtonians - keep an eye out for drooping street lights, and if you see one, report it. Wellington's Mayor Tory Whanau is promising it'll be fixed within two hours, weather permitting. The city has 17,000 faulty street lamps, with 17 coming down over the past four years. Facing such a safety risk, the council - at a $6 million cost - will replace every one of the lights. Council chief infrastructure officer Siobhan Procter spoke to Corin Dann.
17,000 Wellington streetlights are not fit for purpose, with some smashing to the ground. Since the LED lamps were installed in 2018, 17 have fallen because their adaptors can't cope with Capital's blustery winds. They will now all be replaced within a year. Council Chief Infrastructure Officer Siobhan Procter says problems immediately surfaced in 2018, but leadership teams weren't told. "These operational risks were being dealt with as an individual case by case basis and there just wasn't a joining up of the dots." LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

David Menzies is joined by Sheila Gunn Reid for a look back at the Trucker Commission, where it was revealed a pair of Justin Trudeau's ministers were "bantering" about sending tanks to quell the Freedom Convoy protest. Plus, Tamara Ugolini was recently in Berlin, Germany at the World Health Summit. While she was there, one frontline doctor confessed that even though he disagreed with COVID-19 policies, he felt he had to keep his mouth shut.
The Freedom Convoy had to be dismantled not as a safety risk but a public symbol of the “spiritual source of the protest movement,” said Michael Keenan, deputy transport minister. His remarks in a Feb. 6th teleconference with police contradicted cabinet claims the Wellington Street blockade was a danger to the public. Keenan agreed while the sit-in was not a public safety risk it made a poor image. Tom Korski, Managing Editor of Blacklock's Reporter, joined us and said using the Emergencies Act was never about there actually being an emergency, but all politics.
Start small. That's what Jenny Taylor did when God gave her a vision to spread His love in her city. And from that small seed, God has done remarkable things! As they celebrate 20 years of ministry, Jenny and her husband, Brian, share how God has done exceedingly more than they could ask or think! As part of their celebration, they dedicated their newest facilities, along with their guests which included many local and regional government officials, community leaders and nearly 90 partner agencies and organizations. Join host, Doug Stringer, Jenny Taylor, founder of Somebody Cares Scotland, and Brian Taylor the CEO of Somebody Cares Scotland, as they share the incredible story of what the Lord has done. What began in the heart of Jenny Taylor, inspired by a relationship with Doug Stringer and Somebody Cares America, has now become a well-recognized charity and nonprofit in the UK and beyond. Their passion for God and heart for people has now become a ministry with over 20 warehouses and buildings, and nearly 500,000 square feet of facilities…meeting the needs of people on multiple levels. In August 2002, Somebody Cares Founder, Jenny Taylor and her husband Brian, attended a presentation by Doug Stringer, founder of Somebody Cares America/International. Recognizing her own desire to offer help to those in need in Aberdeen, Jenny was touched by the care, work, ethos, and values of Somebody Cares America / Int'l. Keen to replicate their model within Aberdeen, Somebody Cares Scotland was born. Stating small, they rented a store in Wellington Street, rented a van and along with a single volunteer Jenny began to collect donated furniture and food to redistribute it to those in need with the city. From these simple beginnings, care, empathy and hope for the future was demonstrated within Aberdeen. It wasn't long until word of Jenny's work within the city was highlighted to Aberdeen City Council and demand for the charity's services increased exponentially. What is God asking you to do? There was fierce debate on the airwaves and in the production studio over the pronunciation of famous historic Perth department store Boans. A famous retail chain which operated in Perth from the late 19th century to the late 20th century, Boans' landmark store was located in Perth, between Wellington Street and Murray Street, with other outlets including Kwinana and Morley, which famously burnt down in 1986. But it was the pronunciation of the store that had everyone fired up on Thursday, debating whether it's called BO-ANS or BOANS.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Episode 230: Over a period of 22 months, between January 1969 and January 1971, 3 women in Southwestern Ontario were brutally murdered in 3 different towns. These women's names were Isobella “Belva” Russell, Edith Authier, and Jane Wooley. Police solved the case of the third victim, Belva Russell, a matter of weeks after the crime. The perpetrator, Gerald Thomas Archer was convicted and imprisoned. There were obvious similarities between all three crimes. For several reasons the initial investigators on the cases missed them. Gerald Thomas Archer got his freedom in 1985, when he was 65. He was a drifter and passed away in 1995. Five years after Archer's death, his family made police aware of new information. Through DNA, were police able to connect him to the murders of Edith Authier, and Jane Wooley. Gerald Thomas Archer, had been a serial killer and had walked free for the last ten years of his life. On February 2nd, 1999 at the address of 11553 Wellington Street, a rural street about 7km north of St.Thomas, Ontario emergency services were called as there was a fire in the farmhouse. When they arrived at the address they found a fire that was local to the living room of the house and they tragically found a man and a woman inside the building and they were both deceased. This however was not quite as it seemed and the police would unravel a set of circumstances that still today, over 23 years later, have not been explained, solved or closed. For a month, a group of truckers, anti-vaxxers, anti-maskers and various elements of Canada's far right occupied the streets around Canada's capital in Ottawa. They've also occupied border crossings between Canada and the U.S. The so-called "Freedom Convoy" has demanded everything from an end to vaccine mandates and mask mandates to the jailing of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. They've targeted Canada's liberal ruling class, but have disrupted and harassed the lives of Ottawa residents. Police and the Conservative Party either have stood by or been in active support This past week, Trudeau declared a state of emergency not seen since unrest in Quebec in the 1970s. The police first cleared the trucker blockade on the Ambassador Bridge. And then police moved in to clear the truckers occupation of Wellington Street resulting in 100 arrests. In this episode, flying solo, Scott first talks with Prof Roberta Lexier (@rlexier) of Mount Royal University about the situation, what is driving these protests, Canada's politics and how the left in Canada can respond. And then he talks with organizer James Hutt (@jamesrhutt), a labor organizer, about what's happening on the ground in Ottawa and how the truckers occupation has led to disruption and harassment of vulnerable communities throughout Ottawa. James also talks about the "Battle of Billings Bridge," where communities have organized to stop truckers' resupply into downtown Ottawa. So was this a case of the city's ageing water infrastructure bursting apart again? Wellington Water's chief advisor drinking water, Laurence Edwards, speaks to Susie Ferguson.
