Elizabeth Wettlaufer was a nurse working the night shifts at Caressant Care, a long-term care home in Woodstock, Ontario beginning in 2007. Shortly after her arrival at the home, residents began passing away in their sleep. However, because they were elderly and nothing about their deaths seemed suspicious, no autopsies were conducted. If only the care home dug a little deeper into the circumstances surrounding the residents' deaths, they would have learned the sinister details about what was really going on: a deadly truth that turned out to be something no one could have imagined. This is the story of how the personal demons of Elizabeth Wettlaufer became too much for her to handle, ultimately causing her to take a powerful role on the night shift much too far.FIND US ON SOCIAL MEDIA:Instagram: @crimefamilypodcastTwitter: @crimefamilypod1Facebook: Crime Family PodcastEmail: crimefamilypodcast@gmail.comBecome a patron here:https://www.patreon.com/CrimefamilypodcastGet your Crime Family Merch here: https://www.redbubble.com/shop/ap/123775076EPISODE RESOURCES:"The Unravelling of Nurse Elizabeth Wettlaufer" (The Fifth Estate):https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RtpcDkvHneE"What To Know About A ‘Shadow Of Death' Nurse Before ‘Living With A Serial Killer' Returns" (Oxygen True Crime):https://www.oxygen.com/living-with-a-serial-killer/crime-news/who-is-elizabeth-wettlaufer-nurse"BEHIND BARS Who is Elizabeth Wettlaufer and where is she now?" Elizabeth Wettlaufer is a convicted Canadian serial killer and former registered nurse, whose case prompted widespread public outrage and made headlines internationally. On September 16, 2016, Wettlaufer admitted herself into a psychiatric hospital because she was tired of killing. While there she would confess to a staff psychiatrist, she murdered 8 people and made several attempts to murder more by overdosing her patients on lethal doses of insulin. It would be several years after the initial murders before this angel of death would ever be convicted. But, after a thorough investigation along with a verbal and handwritten confession. On June 26, 2017, Wettlaufer was sentenced to serve 8 consecutive life sentences with no possibility of parole for 25 years.

If you asked someone what they know about serial killers they will most likely mention Jack The Ripper or Jeffrey Dahmer or Ted Bundy and then perhaps branch out from there. In Canada, when you talk to people about serial killers, we have Clifford Olson, Robert Pickton and Paul Bernardo that immediately spring to mind for most. However, one thing that stands out when most people talk about serial killers is that a lot of the most prolific ones are males. You don't often hear too much about female serial killers. Some will say that that is because the stories are not usually all that “interesting” so to speak. One of Canada's most prolific serial killers is a name that most people know, but their memories only really trigger when the name is mentioned. Elizabeth Wettlaufer was found guilty of murdering eight people and attempting to murder six others. What motivates a health care professional to commit the ultimate betrayal and do harm to their patient?  Sometimes it's to spare the victim pain and suffering, but often there are other, nefarious reasons, like sex and greed. This week on The Wardcaster Files, we discuss two cases of medical serial killers, Dr. Harold Shipman and Elizabeth Wettlaufer. Lara Kinkartz is a lawyer with Weir Foulds LLP and from 2017-2019, she was seconded from her firm to act as Associate Commission Counsel to the Public Inquiry into the Safety and Security of Residents in the Long-Term Care Homes System. Often casually referred to by some as the "Wettlaufer Inquiry", the Inquiry's mandate was to inquire into the events which led to the offences committed by Elizabeth Wettlaufer, the Ontario nurse who murdered numerous residents in long term care homes. Wettlaufer admitted to murdering 8 seniors and attempting to murder 6 others during the years of 2007 and 2016. She injected lethal doses of insulin into her victims.  What did the inquiry learn?  and what were the key recommendations that came out of the inquiry? Lara discusses this and more from her unique role and view of the inquiry.

Ota yhteyttä: jaljillapodcast@gmail.comInstagram: @jaljillapodcastMusiikki: Doug Maxwell - Heartbeat of the HoodRikosuhripäivystys: https://www.riku.fi/palvelut/rikosuhripaivystys-116-006/ puh. 116 006Raiskauskriisikeskus: https://tukinainen.fi/ puh. 0800–97899Apua lähisuhdeväkivaltaan: https://www.nollalinja.fi/ puh. 080005005Suomen Mielenterveysseura: https://mieli.fi/fi Kriisipuhelin: 09 2525 0111LÄHTEET:https://www.thecanadianencyclopedia.ca/en/article/elizabeth-wettlaufer-casehttps://globalnews.ca/news/5707936/elizabeth-wettlaufer-inquiry-confession/https://www.chatelaine.com/living/elizabeth-wettlaufer/https://www.cbc.ca/news2/interactives/sh/TBk79oWhpi/elizabeth-wettlaufer-nurse-senior-deaths/https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/eilzabeth-wettlaufer-confession-1.4142647https://www.thestar.com/news/canada/2016/10/29/from-caring-nurse-to-accused-serial-killer-who-is-elizabeth-wettlaufer.htmlhttps://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/london/wettlaufer-court-nurse-killings-plead-guilty-1.4140973https://www.thestar.com/news/canada/2017/06/02/if-you-ever-do-this-again-well-turn-you-in-pastor-told-killer-nurse.htmlhttps://globalnews.ca/news/3495384/elizabeth-wettlaufer-timeline/https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/london/woodstock-ontario-elizabeth-wettlaufer-public-inquiry-report-1.5230181https://zeph456.medium.com/elizabeth-wettlaufer-the-serial-killer-nurse-bcf1726f73ahttps://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-44377735https://toronto.citynews.ca/2019/07/31/chronology-of-events-in-the-case-of-serial-killer-nurse-elizabeth-wettlaufer/https://www.nationalobserver.com/2019/08/06/news/key-recommendations-public-inquiry-elizabeth-wettlauferhttps://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/national/ex-woodstock-nurse-pleads-guilty-to-eight-first-degree-murder-charges/article35173985/https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2017/07/the-killer-nurse.htmlhttps://www.toronto.com/news-story/8653211--i-got-the-urge-to-overdose-james-serial-killer-elizabeth-wettlaufer-s-handwritten-confession-released/https://www.ibtimes.com/serial-killer-elizabeth-wettlaufer-gets-nursing-license-revoked-2570516 See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
