LEARN HOW TO JOURNALSPEAK In this beautiful and deeply honest conversation, I'm joined by Luis Mojica, somatic therapist, trauma nutritionist, founder of Holistic Life Navigation, and author of Food Therapy. Luis and I talk about the place where our work so naturally overlaps: the truth that the body is always holding, expressing, protecting, and trying to create safety when life has felt like too much. Luis shares his own story of childhood trauma, chronic illness, body shame, disordered eating, and the long road toward feeling at home in his body. What unfolds is not a typical conversation about nutrition, diets, or “healthy eating,” but a much more compassionate and useful look at food as relationship, food as regulation, and food as a doorway into the parts of us that have been trying to survive. We talk about why so many people with chronic pain and chronic symptoms become terrified of food, how elimination diets can sometimes deepen fear instead of creating freedom, and why shame is often harder to metabolize than anything we eat. Luis explains his framework of stimulants, depressants, and balancers, not as good or bad foods, but as different kinds of nervous system information. We also explore overeating, cravings, glucose, adrenaline, bracing, food-induced stress, and the way our eating patterns can reveal what we are repressing, avoiding, or longing to feel. More than anything, this episode is an invitation to replace fear with curiosity, judgment with compassion, and rigid rules with a more embodied relationship to your own system. Join us! XOOX n. Feeling anxious? Your body might need to down-regulate. Feeling depressed? Your body might need to up-regulate. This modulation of finding balance can be achieved in two ways, through a simple supportive practice Luis offers, and through food. Food affects our biology 24 hours a day. What we eat can activate us into a fight-or-flight response, effectively inducing stress. Or, we can consciously alchemize our food to support our body to be in a place of balance. No shame either way. Eating to balance the nervous system helps the body build capacity to be seen. Luis recommends a snack practice to experiment with and see how your body responds. You're doing everything “right” with food — and still feel anxious, exhausted, and disconnected from your body. Sound familiar? In this episode, Wendy sits down with somatic educator and USA Today bestselling author Luis Mojica to explore the missing link between what we eat and how we feel. Luis shares his own journey through trauma and disordered eating, and the breakthrough that became his book Food Therapy: the idea that food is constantly speaking to your nervous system. He explains “food-induced stress,” why certain foods quietly trigger fight-or-flight, how to sort foods into stimulants, depressants, and balancers — and why your cravings are actually messages about your unmet needs. This is not a diet or a list of rules. It's a compassionate, freeing new way to relate to food, your body, and yourself in midlife. What You'll Learn:• Why even “healthy” foods can push your nervous system into fight-or-flight• The surprising glucose–adrenaline connection behind food-induced stress• How to sort foods into stimulants, depressants, and balancers — and bookend them• How to read your cravings as a compass for unmet emotional needs• A simple embodiment practice to find safety in your own body
Just like Yin and Yang Qi and Blood, it's the kind of thing where you can't really talk about Chinese Medicine and explain what's happening without using this framework and guide of the Five Element Theory. On this episode, I really focus my lens on what this theory is and why anyone would want to use it in their life. The five elements are fire, earth, metal, water, and wood. Within each elements we get into the following categories:- Nature and Environment- Sensory and Ascetic- Body and Organs- Mind and EmotionsIf you've ever felt like your body was speaking a language you couldn't quite translate, the Five Element Theory might be the key you didn't know you were looking for. This framework dissolved the illusion of separation I felt between myself and the natural world, helped me feel more connected to the cycles and seasons I'd always lived inside, and gave me the confidence to finally be the authority of my own health. In today's episode, Elizabeth sits down with Luis Mojica, somatic practitioner and author of Food Therapy. Luis shares his personal journey from childhood dissociation and unprocessed trauma to discovering how deeply food shapes the nervous system. They unpack his framework of stimulants, depressants, and balancers, and explore how our most persistent eating habits are often the body's unconscious attempts to manage stress and avoid pain. Step into a deeply honest, embodied, and paradigm-shifting conversation with Luis Mojica, somatic practitioner, trauma-informed nutritionist, and founder of Holistic Life Navigation, on this episode of Intimate Conversations: Dark Night to Divine Light. Luis brings a rare integration of nervous system work, food health, and trauma healing, inviting us to understand the body not as a problem to fix, but as a language to listen to. Luis shares his personal journey of growing up in an intersex body, navigating confusion, bullying, shame, and deep isolation. Without an empathic witness, he internalized his pain, leading to anxiety, panic, insomnia, and PTSD symptoms that he coped with through food. We explore how his path into healing began with picking up a guitar, learning to be 'held' through the guitar against his torso, allowing sounds, then singing to begin healing his trauma. Then through nutrition, witnessing firsthand how food could radically shift mental health, over time, his work evolved beyond "what to eat" into a much deeper question: Why does the body reach for certain foods in the first place? How are those patterns rooted in nervous system regulation, not lack of discipline? Luis introduces a powerful reframe of trauma and stress through the lens of resonance with the body. Stress can resolve, but trauma keeps the system braced, locked in chronic fight-or-flight. He explains how certain foods can either stimulate, depress, or balance the nervous system, sometimes triggering the same physiological responses as emotional shock or danger. We also talk about: -Trauma as the absence of an empathic witness -The connection between food habits and nervous system states -Chronic adrenaline and living in a braced body -Why coping mechanisms are intelligent, not wrong -Food as a regulator of anxiety, panic, and overwhelm -Moving beyond "healthy vs unhealthy" into body awareness -Somatic experiencing and self-inquiry as healing tools -Shame, secrecy, and the body's protective adaptations -Relearning safety and compassion from the inside out -Creating a relationship with the body rooted in curiosity and kindness In real time, Luis' capacity as a trauma facilitator was revealed as I had an insight into my desire for a glass of wine at the end of the day. He was elegant in holding space for my tears, guiding my somatic awareness, being with my emotions that transmuted into insights, awareness and integration right before our eyes… How amazing to meet a facilitator who can provide for me what I provide for my clients- no one can see our own blindspots. How nourishing to experience a brother whose soul lives for supporting others in integrating trauma in real time. This episode is an invitation to soften your judgment and deepen your listening. It reminds us that the body is not working against us, it is working for us, always seeking safety, regulation, and connection. Healing begins when we stop forcing change and start understanding the intelligence beneath our patterns. Since my time in graduate school for somatic psychotherapy, I have shared with anyone who would listen about the connection between somatics and nutrition. It has felt absurd to me that food was never talked about in my somatic studies. In my PhD interview, I passionately shared that I believe there is a need to bring the field of nutrition into somatics. This has been a 20-year journey where I'm seeing that others have also been trying to combine these fields. One of those people I'm thrilled to bring back onto the podcast. In this week's episode, I chat with Luis Mojica, Somatic Educator, certified in Holistic Nutrition, and author of Food Therapy, about: How Luis also came to combine the fields of somatics, nutrition, and traumaFood as a witness to your darkest momentsWhat different foods will do in your nervous systemThe importance of titrating balancing foods into your mealsOwning the choice to lean on food Somatic practices to move through cravings Discovering what your most craved foods are trying to do for you You can also read the transcript to this week's episode here: https://www.stephaniemara.com/blog/how-to-use-food-cravings-as-feedback-of-your-nervous-system-statesWith Compassion and Empathy, Stephanie Mara FoxKeep in touch with Luis: Website: www.holisticlifenavigation.com Link to book page: https://www.holisticlifenavigation.com/the-book Podcast: www.holisticlifenavigation.com/podcast Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/holistic.life.navigationSupport the showKeep in touch with Stephanie Mara:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/_stephaniemara/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/stephaniemarafoxWebsite: https://www.stephaniemara.com/https://www.somaticeating.com/Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/stephmara/TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@stephaniemarafoxContact: support@stephaniemara.comSupport the show:Become a supporter: https://www.buzzsprout.com/809987/supportAll affiliate links: https://www.stephaniemara.com/resourcesReceive 15% off my fave protein powder with code STEPHANIEMARA at checkout here: https://www.equipfoods.com/STEPHANIEMARAUse my Amazon Affiliate link when shopping on Amazon: https://amzn.to/448IyPlSpecial thanks to Bendsound for the music in this episode. www.bensou...
In this episode, I interview somatic therapist, nutritionist, and author Luis Mojica about the link between trauma recovery and nutrition, a focus of his book Food Therapy (releasing April 28). Mojica explains “food-induced stress,” arguing that nervous system regulation is affected by what we eat daily, not just breathwork or therapy, and categorizes foods as stimulants (caffeine, sugar, skipping meals), depressants (fried/processed flour and fat like fries, pizza, pasta), and balancers (beans, greens, proteins). He describes “seesaw regulation,” shame-free “unconscious alchemy” behind cravings, and how balancing meals can shift mood, sleep, glucose, and stress responses. They discuss examples including insomnia tied to nocturnal hypoglycemia, improved blood sugar, boundaries revealed when removing coping foods, and how culture and processed diets shape regulation. Mojica shares a tracking practice and invites pre-order readers to a free book club.Connect with Kallie on Instagram: https://stan.store/kalisomatics?utm_source=ig&utm_medium=social&utm_content=link_in_bio&fbclid=PAdGRleARQsKhleHRuA2FlbQIxMQBzcnRjBmFwcF9pZA8xMjQwMjQ1NzQyODc0MTQAAaekIYy6yHKiLmOfqLB6P1B-SfHnOs4TfxYjIbTGbdPPNBhh4_0CTn1CThQmHw_aem_wge7M1c9I3gInfyi0T7sGAConnect with Luis on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/holistic.life.navigation?igsh=NTc4MTIwNjQ2YQ==Buy Luis's book here:https://amzn.to/4ci3byy

PRE-ORDER the upcoming book now: https://www.holisticlifenavigation.com/the-bookAt the age of nine Luis was diagnosed with ADHD. He never medicated with pharmaceuticals: instead his drugs of choice were coffee, cigarettes, and a stimulating diet. Over the years Luis has learned how to reduce the stimulants needed to keep him engaged. ADD/ADHD is when there is not enough dopamine getting to the brain, usually because of low levels of brain and gut, or vagus nerve inflammation. People in this situation are sometimes referred to as “bored”, “lazy”, or "depressed", as a body collapses in to functional freeze. Camille and Luis discuss the upcoming 6-month ADHD Slow Group starting April 7th. It begins with learning to relate to the ADHD nervous system, overcouplings and judgments about ADHD behaviors, animism of the body, overwhelm, dopamine, relationships and finally cultivating a fascinating life. They will also teach how to leverage balancing foods, and how to consciously use stimulants. The gift of ADHD is a low capacity for bullsh*t, or as Luis calls it RITC, a Radical Inability To Conform. Instead of seeing it as a disorder, we see it as the dopamine deficiency that it is, so that we can learn to relate to in a healthier way. Curious about how Luis teaches? Here is your window into a nutritional teaching about stored trauma, visceral fat, and inflammation. Stored trauma in the body sets off a chain reaction resulting in elevated insulin, putting the body into fat storage mode. Visceral fat becomes an endocrine organ producing protein molecules called cytokines that create an inflammatory response. This process primes the body for carb consumption. Often food is either avoided, or binging is chosen, stressing the body out further. Stored trauma also creates excess adrenaline that gets filtered through the liver. The metabolites go into the bile resulting in acidic bile that inflames the gut lining. In times of stress many of us turn towards processed foods, and those also contribute to an inflamed gut lining. Chronic inflammation in the gut usually leads to auto immune diseases, chronic illness and weight issues. Interested in learning more? Today's episode is a replay of the recent free Food Therapy session.Recovery is different from abstinence, though both are important as you heal from addiction. Abstinence is the avoiding of an addictive substance, while recovery is the balancing of your body from years of addiction. For example, some people go from cocaine to coffee so the same activating patterns of addiction are playing out with a new substance. This free session focuses on the somatic psychology behind addiction (a desperation for safety) as well as the biochemistry that causes us to become addicted. Whether it's food, legal or illegal drugs, television, media, work, porn, sex, or money we welcome anyone here who is in recovery, wants to be, or supports people in recovery to learn the important role that food plays in helping the body become balanced and less dependent on addictive substances and behaviors.Get free lifetime access on our Thinkific portal:https://hln.thinkific.com/courses/food-therapy-addictionYou can register for the FREE Food Therapy session here: https://www.holisticlifenavigation.com/events/weight-and-trauma You can read more about, and register for, the retreat at Blue Spirit Costa Rica here: https://www.holisticlifenavigation.com/blue-spirit----You can learn more on the website: https://www.holisticlifenavigation.com/ Learn more about the self-led course here: https://www.holisticlifenavigation.com/self-led-new Join the waitlist to pre-order Luis' book here: https://www.holisticlifenavigation.com/the-book You can follow Luis on Instagram @holistic.life.navigationQuestions? Host Risa Morimoto interviews TCM (Tradtional Chinese Medicine) food therapist and registered dietician Zoey Xinyi Gong, who combines ancient Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) principles with modern nutrition science to dive deep into the world of food therapyZoey, a dietician and author based in Shanghai, shares her personal healing journey and explains that TCM is a holistic approach focused on solving the root imbalance rather than just treating symptoms, leading to improvements in physical health and mood. Unlike Western nutrition, which relies on quantitative goals like counting calories and vitamins, TCM focuses on qualitative goals such as balancing hot, cold, warm, and cooling energetics in a highly individualized manner. The audience will learn how to identify their body's constitution, distinguishing between imbalances like coldness (manifesting as fatigue or cold joints) and heat (which may manifest as hot flashes or anxiety) by recognizing associated symptom patterns. Additionally, listeners will discover how to use specific common foods and powerful medicinal herbs, such as cooling cucumbers to treat heat, or bone broth and spices like cinnamon to treat coldness, and how rose tea can help relieve liver Chi stagnation. Most treatments for ADHD rely on stimulants that create dopamine spikes, helping us push through tasks that otherwise feel painfully boring. While these can help in the short term, they don't address the deeper needs of the body. As someone who was diagnosed with ADHD at age 9 and has been working for over 15 years as a nutritionist and somatic therapist, Luis will teach how to use nutrition to restore your nervous system and even create more sustainable dopamine for focus and to get things done. He will also speak to his own journey of bringing Tourette's and nervous tics into remission through balancing diet and somatic techniques, and how those lessons can be applied to ADHD.Get free lifetime access on our Thinkific portal:https://hln.thinkific.com/courses/food-therapy-adhdYou can read more about, and register for, the live 7-week foundational course here: https://www.holisticlifenavigation.com/course Sign up for our 6-month Embodied Relationships group, beginning in October: https://www.holisticlifenavigation.com/relationship-group----You can learn more on the website: https://www.holisticlifenavigation.com/ Learn more about the self-led course here: https://www.holisticlifenavigation.com/self-led-new Join the waitlist to pre-order Luis' book here: https://www.holisticlifenavigation.com/the-book You can follow Luis on Instagram @holistic.life.navigationQuestions? In this episode, Luis explores how trauma and chronic stress deplete the body, driving us toward processed foods for quick hits of serotonin and temporary relief. He explains the three categories of foods—stimulants, depressants, and balancers—how each affects our emotional state, and why balancing foods are essential for true regulation.Luis also shares his top three nutrition tips for nervous system balance and reads an excerpt from his upcoming book Food Therapy. You can read more about, and register for, the live 7-week foundational course here: https://www.holisticlifenavigation.com/course Sign up for our 6-month Embodied Relationships group, beginning in October: https://www.holisticlifenavigation.com/relationship-group----You can learn more on the website: https://www.holisticlifenavigation.com/ Learn more about the self-led course here: https://www.holisticlifenavigation.com/self-led-new Join the waitlist to pre-order Luis' book here: https://www.holisticlifenavigation.com/the-book You can follow Luis on Instagram @holistic.life.navigationQuestions? Is it your mind, your body, or both that are keeping you awake? These are the questions we're going to dive into on this week's episode, which unpacks sleep from a Chinese Medicine perspective. Chinese Medicine (CM) is an ancient, indigenous system of healing that developed through the study of the body's energy systems. I've personally found this lens of seeing the body to be both enlightening and clarifying—it just makes sense. It's safe to say that all forms of medicine—whether Eastern, Western, holistic, or allopathic—agree that sleep is one of the most important functions of the human body. If you're not sleeping, your body will struggle and eventually fail to function fully. CM is particularly effective for treating sleep disorders because its system of pattern diagnosis and treatment is entirely unique to each individual. On this episode, we dive into the roots, branches, and varied patterns of sleep disorders.Highlights from this episode:I unpack the role of the main organ-energy pathways (meridians) involved in sleep: the Heart, Liver, and Kidneys. The perspective CM has toward the soul/spirit, how it divides it into five aspects, and how they contribute to sleep quality and dreams. The unique system of the CM body clock and how it can help you get better sleep.Common herbal formulas used to treat sleep disorders.Related Episodes: Whispers of Clarity p. 2: Qi Gong #56Whispers of Qi and Blood #67Whispers of Digestion and Food Therapy from a TCM Perspective #72Whispers of Women's Cycles from a TCM Perspective #74p.1 :10 Ways You're Hurting Your Health According to a Student of Chinese Medicine #30p.2 : 10 Ways You're Hurting Your Health According to a Student of Chinese Medicine #35Whispers of Esoteric Acupuncture (and Qi Gong) p. 2 with Dr. AdamsonIf you'd like to connect with Stephanie, you can find her here:Instagram-@schoolofwhispers @__steef___ email-schoolofwhispers@gmail.com If you would like to schedule an acupuncture appointment with Stephanie at her current clinic, Balance Point Acupuncture, you can either visit www.balancepointacu.com or call 561-615-4535 to schedule your appointment todayDISCLAIMER: This podcast is presented for educational and exploratory purposes only. On today's podcast, Luis discusses his personal journey with trauma and nutrition, and how the two together have an impeccable ability to help people recover from stress and trauma.Luis shares his full personal story of childhood abuse, and how food was the only thing that could suppress and repress his pain. His personal experiences drew him towards a psychology degree, which he abandoned because of his dislike of the DSM and it's diagnostic rigidity. Simultaneously, he was working at a health food store, and began to see how much could be changed, both in himself and others, through dietary changes. When he began studying somatic psychology, Luis discovered the missing piece he had been searching for: how trauma is what prevents people from sticking to specific diets that could help people recover from certain health conditions.Certain foods and eating habits can allow us to tolerate the intolerable, and can become a dependence in order for us to relax, sleep, work, and more. In the Embodied Nutrition group, Luis teaches how foods can stimulate, depress, or balance the nervous system, and how to relate to the emotions and sensations arise when we practice "food sobriety."You can read more about, and register for, the Living Seasonally & Cyclically webinar here: https://www.holisticlifenavigation.com/events/living-seasonally-cyclically-how-i-recovered-from-burnout You can read more about, and register for, the 6-month Embodied Nutrition group here: https://www.holisticlifenavigation.com/slow-practice-nutrition-group----You can learn more on the website: https://www.holisticlifenavigation.com/ Learn more about the self-led course here: https://www.holisticlifenavigation.com/self-led-new Join the waitlist to pre-order Luis' book here: https://www.holisticlifenavigation.com/the-book You can follow Luis on Instagram @holistic.life.navigationQuestions? Remember when toll booths were replaced by EzPass? Did you wonder how you would find your way to the closest restaurant or gas station without the interpersonal connection of the toll booth worker? Likewise are you skeptical about A.I.? Join Luis and Holly as they chat about how A.I. can support your creativity, allowing you to do more of what you love. With the help of A.I. Holly Howard does private consulting and business growth training, as she writes her first book. We may be great at the service we offer, but if we are a solo/small business and not good at, or bogged down by, admin work, how do we tend that part of the business? Luis used A.I. to research for his upcoming book, Food Therapy, freeing up hours he could have spent researching on his own. Holly shares how she bounces work ideas off of A.I. She also has A.I. write transcripts and job descriptions for her, building her capacity for the part of her business that she loves doing. All this reduces her mental workload. The key to using A.I. is clearly communicating your needs to the program. If you use A.I. with unsatisfactory results, consider how you communicate. Luis and Holly also discuss dopamine and the difference between algorithms and the social engagement hits of Instagram versus the control you have over A.I. If we go in to the conversation around A.I. grounded, we can help integrate A.I. safely and ethically. --Interested in joining Holly's workshop about A.I.? Luis reads us a chapter of his upcoming book "Food Therapy" (2026). In it he discusses how eating is relational. Our body receives the being of a plant or animal and digests it, breaking it down into chemicals that relate to our bodies' chemicals. In this unconscious alchemy food becomes our bodies. We often use this shift to change our chemistry and avoid feeling. Luis worked with three wives, all who said if they gave up chocolate they would get divorced. They helped him realize that food can be broken down into three categories: depressants, stimulants, and balancers. Understanding these categories became Luis' compass, what he calls the Quiet Diet, used to navigate his own recovery from binge eating. When we embody how foods affect us we become a conscious alchemist, sober to how we actually feel. Food is a potent medicine that can shift our inner ecology and build our capacity to heal from stress and trauma. Have you noticed, how does your body relate to food? I use them most for GI vitamins and allergy screening. Much more affordable than a standard lab. DNA heartworm testing- I've sent to Canada in past- very tricky with customs. Apparently Auburn offers this test. Any vet can set up an account with Auburn's lab to be able to run the test. Ideal when pet parents choose not to use a preventative. Detects living heartworm DNA - positive much sooner than standard testing. Heartworm - Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine. Animalbiome.com is an excellent company. tons of high quality research on microbiome health in dogs and cats and specific research on gut health with raw fed animals. Pet parents can test their pet's biome. I tend to recommend this with all of my GI cases, chronic skin, immune health cases. Results vary a lot. Some pets have severe e-coli overloads and practically zero beneficial bacteria so they need fecal transplants and specific pre/probiotic and fiber sources. Inulin might be a better fiber source than psyllium in some cases. Some pets don't have pathogenic bacteria but they have no good flora so they will also need fecal transplants. Best to work with a vet when this is needed as most of my patients need more support when they are undergoing fecal transplant. I reach for S boullardi /FOS a lot. This is not found in standard small animal formulas. Their product line is amazing! Vax/Titers: puppy /kitten vaccine protocol with titer testing recommendations from Dr. Jean Dodd's foremost authority on endocrine disease and immunology in small animals. One of her projects is the rabies challenge fund. vaccine protocol | HemopetPuppies and kittens need their vaccine series per the protocol to protect them from deadly diseases. We think of these as core vaccinations. We start them earlier in Texas because of the much higher risk here. These vaccines are extremely effective. I usually run titers when the pet has already had one 3 year vaccine because they tend to be better protected and if they are protected, we can run the titers every 3 years when the vaccine would be due. Rabies is a legal requirement to prevent human exposure to this deadly disease. We have a lot of rabies in Texas! Every year, there is at least one pet dog and multiple kittens or adult cats who test positive for Rabies in Austin. They are tested because of human exposure and they are euthanized so their brain tissue can be tested :( All healthy pets should be vaccinated at least twice before titers are run. Titers can still be run but many clinics won't accept the titers. I am rabies vaccinated because I used to work with wildlife. We tested our titers regularly and when they were low, we got a booster. This is standard practice in the human field and may someday be the standard with small animals. Interceptor dose example: Sharing this with y'all so you can see the calculation for Interceptor (milbemycin oxime) **Please note- the chewable pill cannot be broken because the medication is not evenly distributed** Jax weighs 80 # We convert his weight to kg= 36.4kg 36.4 x 0.1mg/kg = 3.64 mg- this is the bare minimum dose to prevent heartworms. I don't like to have such a narrow margin in case the dog gains weight or there is resistance to the drug and because we can't break the tablet, so I tend to dose at 0.2mg/kg - 0.3 mg/kg (instead of 0.5mg/kg) So, his more appropriate dose is 7.3 mg- we round up to 8mg. The 50- 100# dose is 23mg. The 26-50 # dose is 11.5mg. It's the next size down. 11.5mg divided by 36.4 = 0.3 mg/kg dose so we're good!Note: The lower dose does not protect against hookworms according to the study, so you would need to be aware of this. Any dog with a history of hookworms needs the higher dose until 100% clear on antigen testing. In this episode, we explore the complex role guilt plays in our lives, particularly around topics like eating, self-care, and productivity. We start things off with some chit-chat about recording while standing up -- Stef has a moment of body image angst, revisted at the end of the episode. We discuss how guilt can stem from societal expectations and personal values, and whether it truly helps drive positive change or just makes us feel worse. We also talk about how guilt compares to integrity and self-care, arguing that aligning with one's values might be a healthier motivator than guilt. Several personal stories highlight these ideas: Sarah shares a dinner story involving guilt around food and a confrontation with her dad's judgmental comments. Stef talks about the difference between productive frustration and unproductive shame using an example of...underwear Both hosts reflect on their own experiences with guilt related to work and productivity, emphasizing the difference between productive self-care and collapsing out of despair or self-abandonment. The conversation also touches on parental expectations, societal pressures about how to look, eat, and "succeed", and the importance of self-compassion (explained in context, not the abstract boring way). I am a big believer that food is medicine. Growing up in a Chinese household, my mother often told me (and still tells me) to eat certain foods based on Eastern philosophies of health. Once I went to college, I was more exposed to Western ways of thinking about healthy eating, which sometimes conflicted with what I was taught growing up. Through the years, I've experimented with vegetarian and vegan diets and now practice a pescetarian/Mediterranean way of eating - which I have found is the most accommodating for Western ideals of health while still being able to share meals with my Chinese family. In this episode, I chat with Zoey, a NY and Shanghai-based registered dietician, nutrition consultant, chef, and Chinese Medicine food therapist, who shares her own experience with American versus Chinese ways of eating and how she's seen it impact her physical and mental health. If you want to learn how to improve your nutrition for healthier living and crave a perspective that incorporates both Eastern and Western ways of thinking, listen in as we chat about fad diets, good food habits, and what she's learned from the older women in her life about maintaining good health and longevity. On today's episode of The Health Detective Podcast, we are talking once again with a woman on a mission to help pets around the world, Dr. Ruth Roberts! Dr. Roberts was a huge hit the last time she recorded with us! She gave us all the latest insights into keeping our furry friends healthy (you can listen to that episode by clicking here), as well as how we can actually pursue a legitimate career working with people's pets through her Pet Wellness Program. Now that we have had multiple FDNs successfully go through Dr. Roberts' program with nothing but amazing things to say, we felt it was only right to have her back on to talk about he program itself. (WARNING: You'll also get Detective Ev asking a bunch of random pet related questions!) Would you like to see more of Dr. Roberts in the future? Let us know by shooting us a direct message on Instagram: @fdntraining. About Dr. Roberts: During her 30-year career as a DVM, Dr. Ruth Roberts has become one of the nation's foremost experts in holistic and integrative veterinary medicine. After graduating from North Carolina State University in 1990, Dr. Roberts began her career practicing traditional, Western medicine. The onset of simultaneous health challenges for both her and her dog Arnold, however, prompted Dr. Roberts to seek solutions outside of the traditional realm of veterinary care she had learned in her textbooks. Dr. Roberts furthered her education by absorbing the principles of Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine at the Chi Institute in Florida. Her studies there would eventually form the foundation for her philosophy that “good health begins in the bowl.” She is certified in Acupuncture, Chinese Herbology and Food Therapy. In 2006, Dr. Roberts founded The Original Crockpot Diet and continues to see the dramatic results it makes in the health of her patients. She is a leading consultant in integrative veterinary medicine and advises clients in the United States and internationally through her website DrRuthRoberts.com. Dr. Ruth is on a mission to empower pet parents and foster a vibrant community, to ignite a global movement for natural pet health, led by Dr. Ruth and Holistic Pet Health Coaches. Our aim is to equip you with the tools and knowledge to champion your pet's wellbeing, making every tail wag and content purr a testament to our commitment. Can you just take a quick second and look outside… maybe it's blue and beautiful, maybe it's stormy.. whatever the weather is… isn't it amazing that we can connect right here? We can come together from opposing sides of the world and have a conversation. I am so glad about this because today we are talking about mental health. And the most important thing in mental health is for us all to know that we are not alone. We are all here together under the same sky. Here in America, it is Mental Health Awareness Month and as a dietitian with roots in eating disorder treatment, I deeply value the need for this awareness. If you are someone who struggles with anxiety and depression, I am really glad you are here. If you don't, I guarantee someone you love does. So either way, this episode is going to be full of information you need to know. And while we are only scratching the surface of mental health on the show today, I hope this is a conversation that you continue. If you ever need additional support reach out to resources.
