Which is scarier? Going offtrack or staying in a rut? What if you could disrupt the ego driven "norm" (the rut) by working with essential oils, the molecules of connectedness? In this episode, Dr. Florian Birkmayer shares the potential of working with essential oils to help us become whole by disrupting the Default Mode Network (DMN) and emerging from "wetiko" ("cut-offness"). This is where '"Aromagnosis comes in. Aromagnosis is direct perception connecting us to the larger world through the messages carried by genuine, authentic essential oils. We explore how these oils help open access points to initiate innate healing and rediscover our personal myth. We discuss how powerful essential oils, not “nice smells”, can break through our intellectual barriers and open the door to emotional power. We also contemplate “wetiko” or “cut-offness”, the self-imposed isolation from our unconscious and nature overall. This isolation is often something we are not aware of (forgetting what we forgot to remember: connection and feeling) and is apparent in our welcoming of synthetic molecules into our bodies, homes and environment. We reflect on the Enlightenment-era philosophy of “I think, therefore I am”, and how it has led us to ignore our interconnectedness with the universe. Deeper into the episode, Florian expounds upon the power of essential oils and their role in mental health. He deconstructs the Default Mode Network (DMN), our personal “auto-pilot” mode, and how aromatics (and psychedelic assisted therapy) may help deactivate its ruts and create new neural connections. As an ex-psychiatrist, Florian critiques the traditional model of psychiatry, which often turns people into professional patients, and proposes an alternative approach that focuses on broader cultural and ancestral factors alongside working with essential oils (aka: aromas) to bypass the DMN. We delve into the importance of emotions as messages from our subconscious, and the concept of “heart awareness” as a means to tend to our emotional needs. We also discuss the teachings brought by essential oils molecules, expressions of an aromatic plant's soul. One can never pay too much attention to the vagus nerve. In fact, it's one of the hottest topics in wellness right now! This is because this tenth cranial nerve is critical in regulating many essential body functions, including of the heart, gut, brain, and lungs. We've touched upon the vagus nerve a few times with several amazing experts on the Essential Oils Revolution podcast! In 2011, her daughter Emily was dealing with some health issues, and they began to search for alternative treatments. Not being an earthy-crunchy, she was not sure exactly what she was trying to find. But instinctively, she felt that the cycle of drugs to treat a condition, more drugs to treat the side effects, and even more drugs because these all didn't work, was a treadmill that would never end. She felt there just had to be another way. And this is where her journey into natural healing and a toxin-free lifestyle began. She started with a bottle of Bergamot essential oil. Now, she makes oil blends, cleaning products, and skincare recipes for herself and any family or friend willing to try them. Her passion is sharing her journey with others to show them the benefits of kicking as many toxins out of their life as possible. IN THIS PODCAST:Guidelines for using essential oils safely and ethically Safety with essential oils Essential oils and informed consent GUIDELINES FOR USING ESSENTIAL OILS SAFELY AND ETHICALLYGet certified and take a course. There are many aromatherapy schools that teach short courses and introductions. Our scope of practice in most states says [that] if you are going to introduce any new thing, you must demonstrate that you have training. It is worded differently in every state, but that's the gist. (DeeAnna Nagel)You can use essential oils as a kind of prompt, or journal prompt. Wave the bottle under someone's nose and ask them to write down or discuss what it brings up for them. It can be that simple. Know your client's experience: ask your client if they have had any experience with essential oils before bringing it into practice. What it is that they do or do not know will inform you and give you clues as to where you need to teach them more, or what else you can introduce them to. Ask your clients if they have any experience with essential oils. If they do, and they have used the essential oils “straight” (without carrier oil) then you will give them different advice or guidance as opposed to another client who has never worked with essential oils before. Avoid discussing medical practices of essential oils with your clients. I teach people that they can either rely on the systems of the body like the digestive and respiratory system, or they can rely on the chakra system. Whichever systems you use, you speak to the oils as in “this particular oil really supports the respiratory system” … [use the word] supports. (DeeAnna Nagel)SAFETY WITH ESSENTIAL OILSAvoid going in the sun for extended periods of time right after having applied essential oils, especially citrus kinds such as lemon or bergamot. Do not purchase essential oils from huge companies where they can be mass-produced, such as Amazon. If you want to purchase essential oils, look for local outlets that make them in smaller batches because then you will be more likely to purchase essential oil that is natural and free of additives and scents. Avoid placing oils in membrane areas of your body such as your eyes. If you do get the essential oil in your eye, do not flush it out with water: flush it out with a carrier oil. Test an essential oil on the inside of your wrist to test your skin's reaction to it. As a psychotherapist or coach or a helper or healer of any kind, again, the best thing we can do is empower our client to learn their bodies, whether you're talking about mindful eating or essential oils or suggesting yoga. The client needs to know their body. (DeeAnna Nagel)ESSENTIAL OILS AND INFORMED CONSENTIf you are supplied with essential oils from a company and you are distributing those oils to your clients through sales, you are not allowed to sell them to your clients because that is considered a dual relationship. If you sell oils to your clients and they sell oils to other people, you become their employer, and that breaches ethical considerations. Recommend to your clients that if they would like to purchase an essential oil that
