Fintechs have pushed the industry to focus on client experiences, and our show today digs into how traditional banks can collaborate with global banks like Citi to improve experiences like cross border payments for their clients. In our conversation today, Aashish Mishra, Citi's Global Head for Banks sales and North Asia head for Financial Institutions and Fintech Sales, Treasury & Trade Solutions (TTS), dives into how the bank's 24/7 US dollar clearing business, as well as solutions like Worldlink ® Payment Services, are helping the firm's bank clients deliver modern and intuitive experiences to its customers. Aashish Mishra is part of Citi's Services' business based in Hong Kong, and he performs two roles: he's responsible for TTS sales and strategy for all FI client segments in North America, which spans banks, fintechs, insurance, asset managers, and broker dealers. And for the bank segment globally, his focus is on delivering the entire TTS solution set to his clients, including cash clearing, global payments and receivables, Banking as a Service, liquidity solutions and trade solutions. Prior to this role, he spent extensive time in Citi's Security Services business, including as the Head of Custody Product and Head of Direct Custody and Clearing business for Asia.  Aashish has extensive experience in the financial institution space, and has worked closely with senior clients, regulators, and financial market infrastructure during his career. Today, he brings that insight from multiple arms of the vast Citi footprint to the show to explore how banks can push their products further without burdening their teams with technical lift, as well as where he expects client expectations to go in the future.

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Summary of “Animal Rights Activism Trends to Look Out for in 2023” by Animal Agriculture Alliance, published by Aashish Khimasia on February 23, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. A blog-post by a member of the Animal Agriculture Alliance (AAA) has identified several trends in animal rights activism that they project for 2023. These trends are likely to be causes for concern for the animal agriculture industry, and the piece was written to make AAA supporters aware of them. Recognising these trends and identifying the views held on these animal advocacy tactics by proponents of animal agriculture may provide advocates with valuable insights. In this post, I list the key trends identified by the article and bullet point tactics highlighted by the article which are of particular interest. I'm thankful to “The Cranky Vegan” for bringing this article to my attention through their linked video. Linking CAFOs to negative human and environmental health Drawing attention to the detrimental effects of CAFOs (concentrated animal feeding operations) to human and environmental health Using historical precedents of CAFOs being charged in court such as in North Carolina and Seattle in messaging Exploring cases where ethnic minorities have experienced disproportionate negative health impacts of CAFOs This strategy may create opposition to CAFOs from individuals and organisations that may not be compelled by animal-focused driven arguments, and could be further integrated into outreach and media messaging. Referring to historical precedents of CAFOs being charged with breaching environmental regulations may help to legitimise messaging against them. The use of undercover footage in court and media Using undercover footage from factory farms to motivate arguments in court that such operations engage in unfair competition, false advertising, market distortion and fraud Using undercover footage from factory farms pressure retailers to cut ties with such farms Using undercover footage from animal rescue missions from factory farms as evidence against charges of trespassing and theft The continued and increased use of undercover footage from factory farms is clearly concerning for animal agriculture, given the extensive efforts to block this such as through so called Ag-gag laws. However, the suppression of undercover footage from factory farms may lead to increased media attention on these items and public scrutiny on the conditions of factory farms. Indeed, in a recent case, Direct Action Everywhere activists who were being prosecuted after liberating piglets from a Smithfield Foods farm and releasing footage from their mission, were acquitted by the jury, despite the judge blocking the jury from viewing the footage taken. The aforementioned ways in which undercover footage may be used to aid the acquittal of activists, challenge farms in court and pressure retailers to cut ties with farms highlight the potency of combining undercover footage with legal action. Prioritising Youth Engagement Engaging young people in programmes that rival agricultural programmes like FFA and 4-H Fostering social disapproval of animal product consumption and normalising plant-based foods in classrooms, presenting the suffering caused by factory farming in an emotive way Educating young people and creating a shift in culture towards empathy, through recognising the suffering caused by animal agriculture and normalising plant-based foods, may challenge the image that animal agriculture is trying to maintain. This may be an important factor in changing consumption habits of future generations. Deconstructing legal personhood The use of the writ of habeas corpus, a right that protects against unlawful and indefinite imprisonment, as a way to challenge the legal personhood of animals by the Nonhuman Rights ...

How much can Apache Kafka® scale horizontally, and how can you automatically balance, or rebalance data to ensure optimal performance? You may require the flexibility to scale or shrink your Kafka clusters based on demand. With experience engineering cluster elasticity and capacity management features for cloud-native Kafka, Ajit Yagaty (Confluent Cloud Control Plane Engineering) and Aashish Kohli (Confluent Cloud Product Management) join Kris Jenkins in this episode to explain how the architecture of Confluent Cloud supports elasticity. Kris suggests that optimal elasticity is like water from a faucet—you should be able to quickly obtain as many resources as you need, but at the same time you don't want the slightest amount to go wasted. But how do you specify the amount of capacity by which to adjust, and how do you know when it's necessary?Aashish begins by explaining how elasticity on Confluent Cloud has come a long way since the early days of scaling via support tickets. It's now self-serve and can be accomplished by dialing up or down a desired number of CKUs, or Confluent Units of Kafka. A CKU corresponds to a specific amount of Kafka resources and has been made to be consistent across all three major clouds. You can specify the number of CKUs you need via API, CLI or Confluent Cloud UI. Ajit explains in detail how, once your request has been made, cluster resizing is a two-step process. First, capacity is added, and then your data is rebalanced. Rebalancing data on the cluster is critical to ensuring that optimal performance is derived from the available capacity. The amount of time it takes to resize a Kafka cluster depends on the number of CKUs being added or removed, as well as the amount of data to be rebalanced. Of course, to request more or fewer CKUs in the first place, you have to know when it's necessary for your Kafka cluster(s). This can be challenging as clusters emit a large variety of metrics. Fortunately, there is a single composite metric that you can monitor to help you decide, as Ajit imparts on the episode.  Other topics covered by the trio include an in-depth explanation of how Confluent Cloud achieves elasticity under the hood (separate control and data planes, along with some Kafka dogfooding), future plans for autoscaling elasticity, scenarios where elasticity is critical, and much more.EPISODE LINKSShrink a Dedicated Kafka Cluster in Confluent CloudElastic Apache Kafka Clusters in Confluent CloudWatch the video version of this podcastKris Jenkins' TwitterStreaming Audio Playlist Join the Confluent CommunityLearn more with Kafka tutorials, resources, and guides at Confluent DeveloperLive demo: Intro to Event-Driven Microservices with ConfluentUse PODCAST100 to get an additional $100 of free Confluent Cloud usage (details)

Is it time to consider an advisory board? And if so, why? What skills do you need? And how do you find the right people who are willing to help? Aashish Agarwaal, founder and chairman of the Enerji Group, and Alexey Volynets of the International Finance Corporation share entrepreneurial perspectives and corporate governance advice to help you figure out what's right for your company.Rare is the entrepreneur who is an expert at everything. Turning to others outside your company for advice can be essential for success. Formalizing that process with an advisory board is helping Aashish Agarwaal strategically transform Enerji Group, the digital publishing enterprise he founded in India. But it took awhile to figure out exactly what he needed, who could help, and how to run the board effectively.Alexey Volynets understands what Agarwaal had to go through to create the ideal advisory board. As an expert in corporate governance at the International Finance Corporation, he has been teaching companies about corporate governance for years. The most common manifestation of corporate governance is a board — fiduciary or advisory. Whereas fiduciary boards have financial liabilities, advisory boards are simply there to provide expertise that you may be lacking. “As you are growing, and when you are on the top of the world, it's important to have a check,” Volynets explains. “External advisors, especially very independent voices will ask you the right questions and will challenge your assumptions.”Agarwaal figured out who he needed by first identifying the skill gaps in his company and what strategic initiatives he needed help with and how often. He suggests “I would say first what are the gaps, and second, do you need that help on a consistent basis or intermittent basis? Because again, you have to decide how much investment you're going to make in it.” Finding the right people isn't easy, either. Volynets suggests the best place to look is your own networks to find the business people you trust with the criteria you need. But Volynets cautions entrepreneurs to avoid adding friends, suppliers, contractors, etc. to an advisory board, even if they have the requisite skills. He says “The most important characteristic is emotional independence.” Listen to Aashish's first hand experience on creating an advisory board and Alexey's insights on how to do it strategically and successfully when it's time to tap into the experience and expertise of other business leaders.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Dr. Didwania completed his medical school at the University of Michigan, and his residency at Northwestern University. His clinical interests include general internal medicine, community health, and hospital medicine. His research focuses on improving medical education, specifically in curriculum design that focuses on improving health equity and advocacy. Dr. Didwania's passion for teaching has been recognized through a number of Outstanding Teacher Awards from the Feinberg School of Medicine, and the Program Director of the Year Award at the McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University. Dr. Aashish Didwania is the first to admit that he struggled with finding his personal “why”. When he realized that his motivation was seeing other people succeed, and making a positive impact in medicine, his career became much more fulfilling. Dr. Didwania shares that when the vision or purpose is not clear, the journey is much more difficult—especially in medicine.  Because it is our personal “why” that empowers us to persevere in the face of challenges. Pearls of Wisdom: 1. Your mentors have gone through many of the same challenges you are facing.  Embrace your challenges as normal, take the initiative to approach your mentors, and you'll likely find a deep connection. 2. Finding and remembering your ‘why' will help you stay resilient through the challenges/downturns in your career.  While it is awkward, read your old personal statements every 6 months to remember your journey and purpose in medicine. 3. Hospitals are tough environments and sometimes that environment distracts one from being kind.  Being nice in the hardest of times is what stands out and makes one a leader and role model.
