Ever wonder what happened to the kids in the 90’s that could never get out of the closet...maybe trapped in there with old field hockey sticks and uniforms? Stories of flannels and baby white tank tops? Maybe a few “oops, I swear I was just tipsy stories.

Kim and Alex have the pleasure of speaking with Melissa Giberson, author of Late Bloomer: Finding My Authentic Self at Midlife (Releasing on August 8, available for pre-order through Amazon!) ORDER NOW!!!! Melissa Giberson is a middle-aged suburban wife and mother of two kids, solidly planted in the life she's always wanted. Yet she longs for something more—something she can't quite put her finger on until, one day at the Y, she finds herself mesmerized by the sight of a naked woman and asks herself for the first time: Am I gay? This revelation sends Melissa on a head-spinning journey of self-discovery, one that challenges everything she thinks she knows about herself, forces her to decide exactly how much she's willing to risk for authenticity, and shakes the foundations of the family she's fiercely determined to shield from the kinds of wounds she sustained during her own childhood. Torn between her desire to be true to herself and her desire to protect her children, she is consumed by fear and conflicting emotions—and when her husband unexpectedly serves her divorce papers, her confusion only deepens. Adrift in uncharted waters, Melissa finds fragments of understanding and peace in unexpected places—in a conference room in Israel, a small fishing village in Cape Cod, and at a yoga retreat center—that help her deconstruct her preconceptions about faith and identity and begin to construct a new framework for her life. Over the course of her ten-year journey, she finds hope, love, and more courage than she ever knew she was capable of, and she gradually assembles the puzzle that is her—the real her. Kim and Alex detail how being able to hold both love and anger creates balance. Following up since the trial they detailed in the 3 parts series, "It Was Never About Queerness: Abuse", they share how life has been, what is happening and where things are going now navigating these systems in place that were put in place to protect only a certain type of person who has certain access to resources and holds a certain amount of privilege. We titled that series, "It was never about queerness" because though this is a podcast about being queer in a heteronormative world, we wanted to bring the focus back the heart of this story: a little girl whose life as a transgender child, obtaining access to health care and being provided with the option to medically transition was constantly being threatened, doubted, gate-keeped and ignored by her own abusive father while he cloaked his actions and behavior in "safety" and "care" calling out the legal system that makes domestic abuse recovery and safety only accessible for victims with money who can pay to fight and who have the privilege of knowing how to navigate the broken system a Colorado court system that allows a known domestic abuser be appointed as the Child Family Investigator. Dr Mark Kilmer, the "expert", a CFI/PRE/Psychologist whose grandiosity and arrogance is on full display places vulnerable children back into the care of abusive caretakers. And who when questioned, responds with complete disregard to the nuances of being a victim of domestic abuse therefore siding with the abuser How deeply archaic our system is that dismisses queerness and cannot keep up with real life time, staying ignorant to the signs of more covert types of abuse, forcing victims and abusers to co-parent "in the best interest of the children" The infuriating reality that everyone involved in the system, designed to "protect"was not actually equipped to call out the abuse happening and acknowledge that LGBTQ+ people and children whose identities are being targeted Dr. Mark Kilmer: the CFI that was appointed to our case... Jeremy and Jo Ivester: Authors of "Once a Girl, Always a Boy"

Kim and Alex get the privilege to have a conversation with Jeremy and Jo Ivester. Book description: "Jeremy Ivester is a transgender man. Thirty years ago, his parents welcomed him into the world as what they thought was their daughter. As a child, he preferred the toys and games our society views as masculine. He kept his hair short and wore boys' clothing. They called him a tomboy. That's what he called himself. By high school, when he showed no interest in flirting, his parents thought he might be lesbian. At twenty, he wondered if he was asexual. At twenty-three, he surgically removed his breasts. A year later, he began taking the hormones that would lower his voice and give him a beard―and he announced his new name and pronouns. Once a Girl, Always a Boy is Jeremy's journey from childhood through coming out as transgender and eventually emerging as an advocate for the transgender community. This is not only Jeremy's story but also that of his family, told from multiple perspectives―those of the siblings who struggled to understand the brother they once saw as a sister, and of the parents who ultimately joined him in the battle against discrimination. This is a story of acceptance in a world not quite ready to accept." --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/howtobequeer/message
