Are you an early- or mid-career individual contributor, curious about how to showcase your contributions and gain the recognition your work deserves? This week's guest, Sally Ivester, brings us a fresh perspective on architecting your own career successfulness -- without trying to be someone you're not.  Sally is a chief of staff in big tech who had a career-transforming experience when she downshifted her approach to career before the birth of her daughter. She joins us this week to share her perspectives on making the shift to playing your career on "easy mode" for those of us more used to playing our careers on "hard mode."  We talk about the subject I personally love to hate: managing up. We also discuss the importance of proactively setting and communicating boundaries, and Sally's approaches to navigating feedback and what she calls "working loudly," (including a very introvert-friendly way to do so in writing). This short episode packs a punch of career development, for listeners who are looking to upskill at playing the corporate game (without masking or playing politics in ways that don't suit you).  Sally was also very generous in sharing resources with us -- check out the links below! Do you have a question or topic you'd like to see me tackle either as a solo episode or with a guest? I'm all ears. Visit the Thinkydoers home page and contact me there, or, point your guest suggestions my way! Episode Highlights Introduction to Sally Ivester: Sally's background and her focus on supporting early-career professionals. Managing Up: Redefining the concept of managing up without masking or changing who you are. Communicating Boundaries: The importance of setting and communicating personal boundaries at work. Working Loudly: How to effectively showcase your work and contributions. Feedback and Growth: Embracing feedback and the concept of “B+ is the new A+.” Personal Operating Model: How to create and share your personal operating model to set clear expectations. Common Questions What is managing up?: Managing up involves thinking ahead and aligning with your manager's expectations without compromising your authenticity. How can I communicate my boundaries at work?: Proactively share your personal operating model, including your preferred communication methods and working hours. What does working loudly mean?: Working loudly means actively communicating your contributions and achievements to ensure they are recognized. How should I handle feedback?: Embrace feedback as an opportunity for growth and aim for continuous improvement rather than perfection. Notable Quotes from Guest Sally Ivester “Managing up isn't about being pleasing; it's about thinking ahead and aligning with your leader.” “B+ is the new A+. Embrace feedback and aim for continuous improvement.” “Working loudly means ensuring your contributions are recognized and valued.” Sally's Links and Resources A free copy of Sally's usually paid-only product, her Project Tracker  The Career Starter Pack Checklist The Ambitious Employee's Playbook to Corporate Success, Sally's Maven Course Sally Ivester's Website for Your First Corporate Job YourFirstCorporateJob on TikTok Sally Ivester on LinkedIn Sara's Links and Resources Strategic Achievement Score Quiz: findrc.co/stratscore Email Sara at hello@redcurrantco.com Join the Launch Squad for Sara's Upcoming Books: You Are A Strategist and the No-BS OKRs Workbook Download: No-BS OKRs In A Box one sheet Virtual Consult: Start your personalized virtual consult Other Free Resources: Access all free resources OKR Self-Assessment: Get your No-BS OKR Self-Assessment Strengths (and Growth Opportunities) WTF are OKRs guide Thinkydoers (not-just-an OKR podcast) Home Page

Matthew Ivester, a 37-year-old resident of Centennial, Colorado, has been charged with the second-degree murder of his girlfriend, Stephanie Long, 36. Deputies from Arapahoe County revealed disturbing details of the alleged fatal beating that took place in September while the couple was watching a Broncos game. Deputies arrived at the couple's residence in Centennial soon after midnight on September 18, responding to a distress call. Ivester initially provided conflicting accounts of the events leading to Long's critical condition, claiming she had become unresponsive due to heavy drinking. However, surveillance footage from inside their home told a different story. Ivester told investigators that the video cameras weren't working. However, they were working and captured the brutal assault on Stephanie Long. Deputies reported that Ivester shook her, slapped her, and put his hand on her throat, preventing her from calling for help. While Long initially survived the September 17 incident, she suffered a cardiac arrest, falling into a coma with no brain activity. The medical team awaited permission from her family to withdraw life support. On September 21, Matthew Ivester was officially charged with second-degree murder, two counts of assault in the first degree, two counts of assault in the second degree, one count of assault in the third degree, and one count of harassment. Ivester's narrative of the events surrounding the assault has raised significant doubts. According to an affidavit, he initially suggested that Long's behavior may have been influenced by heavy drinking and possibly crack cocaine use on the day of the incident. He claimed they had been watching a Broncos game and had an argument, during which Long allegedly headbutted him. The affidavit detailed Ivester's changing accounts, indicating inconsistencies about the location and circumstances of the argument. He described pushing Long down on the couch and finding her on the bedroom floor later that evening. Disturbingly, he allegedly left her unchanged despite her having urinated on herself. As Long's condition worsened, Ivester offered another explanation for the headbutting incident, attributing it to Long's supposed multiple personalities. Investigators revealed that Ivester had a history of physical altercations with Long, including restraining her by grabbing her arm and throat. Footage inside the home, however, painted a grim picture of the couple's relationship. On September 17, the video allegedly captured them yelling at each other and engaging in a physical altercation, with Ivester striking Long over the head multiple times. He reportedly grabbed her throat, shook her violently, and slapped her repeatedly, all while disregarding her pleas to stop. Long, visibly injured during the altercation, complained of head pain and attempted to call 911 through Google. Ivester prevented her from making the call and took the phone from her hand. She tried to escape through the front door, but Ivester stopped her from leaving. A subsequent medical examination revealed the extent of Long's injuries, including a large right subdural hematoma, diffuse cerebral edema, and herniation. The injuries indicated a severe brain bleed and a lack of oxygen to the brain. Ivester is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on Nov. 6. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Lent is a time for self-reflection and prayer. One way to do this is by exploring the life, actions, and teachings of Jesus. First Baptist Church of Athens Georgia offers these devotions for your Lenten journey. Using the book, Seeing with Jesus: Developing A Worldview Shaped by the Gospels, by Jack Glasgow, members from our church have prepared daily devotions offering insights, discoveries, and yes, sometimes questions.  This week, our devotions correspond with Chapter 3, Seeing in His Encounters. Today's devotion is from Connie Ivester. Kim and Alex get the privilege to have a conversation with Jeremy and Jo Ivester. Book description: "Jeremy Ivester is a transgender man. Thirty years ago, his parents welcomed him into the world as what they thought was their daughter. As a child, he preferred the toys and games our society views as masculine. He kept his hair short and wore boys' clothing. They called him a tomboy. That's what he called himself. By high school, when he showed no interest in flirting, his parents thought he might be lesbian. At twenty, he wondered if he was asexual. At twenty-three, he surgically removed his breasts. A year later, he began taking the hormones that would lower his voice and give him a beard―and he announced his new name and pronouns. Once a Girl, Always a Boy is Jeremy's journey from childhood through coming out as transgender and eventually emerging as an advocate for the transgender community. This is not only Jeremy's story but also that of his family, told from multiple perspectives―those of the siblings who struggled to understand the brother they once saw as a sister, and of the parents who ultimately joined him in the battle against discrimination. This is a story of acceptance in a world not quite ready to accept." --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/howtobequeer/message

Tom talks with innovation leader and brand builder Gavin Ivester. Gavin is the former Vice President of Design for Bang & Olufsen, the beloved maker of artful audio equipment and televisions. Gavin talks about creating a principle driven design strategy that delivered double-digit growth in a painfully competitive market, how he started at Apple where he was employee number 2,454, and how he made the change from forklift driver to designer of the original PowerBook. Gavin also speaks about the breakthrough design decision of the PowerBook that's impacted every laptop since, the implications of design principles, how "honesty in materials" promotes sustainability and superior customer experience, how great design and great craftsmanship together create longevity and explain why it can be worth paying $20k for a TV. Gavin also discusses what he learned at Puma where his career shifted from design to product as head of the footwear division, and why licensing can be a sinkhole for your brand equity. Tom ends with a discussion of "the shadow" and how it's reflected in industrial design and managing your life as a product, and Gavin takes us home by talking about the implications of having a successful career on raising children, and what products he loves.

The agenda starts with the styles first, then ways to become or continuing being a leader, and a global insight into worldwide leadership. Jack Stahl, the President of Coca-Cola between 1978 and 2000 and CEO of Revlon between 2002 and 2006 provides a good example of a leader who harnesses situations to his advantage. In his book Lessons on Leadership: The 7 Fundamental Management Skills for Leaders at All Levels he elucidates many instances where the leadership he exerted during specific situations made all the difference. Early in Stahl's career, his mentor Doug Ivester tasked him with preparing a prospectus for the public offer of Coca-Cola's bottling division. Stahl delegated the project without adequate oversights, and Ivester asked for an early draft, Stahl found the draft more incomplete than he had expected. Ivester worked with Stahl late into the night as the project had a definite and irreversible deadline. From this experience, Stahl discovered the secret of Ivester's effectiveness: the skill to combine high-level oversight with the ability to delve into details and adopt a hands on approach when required. Stahl since then makes it a priority to train others to focus on details as an effective alternative to micro management, and to put the experience to good use to manage Coca-Cola's operations in 180 countries, a Herculean task 30 years ago when the internet was nonexistent and the world was not as connected as today. Stahl focused on deriving key metrics from his information systems, yet remaining alert to details. Leadership doesn't always have to be this idea of a person who has shaped and revolutionized history with significant influence because e there are leaders all around us including but not limited to family members, teachers, educators, law enforcement, pastors, etc. It is important we understand that we can't do everything alone and at some point to expand to a higher level of leadership we need an effective team. Briefly, ill discuss this but will not go into full details. Whether a management team for business, community, or anything its critical we know HOW TO FIND, RECRUIT AND RETAIN A HIGH-IMPACT LEADERSHIP TEAM.
