The process of building a company, getting funded and bringing a product to market isn't just data-driven. It's gut-driven too. The numbers matter, but when you're building a product without market acceptance, you have to trust your intuition and persevere when you're told it won't work.   In many ways, taking an entrepreneurial risk is a lot like taking a creative risk. You have a vision not many understand until you convince them. The journey can be lonely, and you'll question yourself all the time. Considering that our guest took Ugg public and wrote a novel for the first time, she would know how similar the journeys are.   How do you keep going when you're doing something so disruptive that no one sees the vision? What pitfalls do entrepreneurs fall into in that early funding stage? How do you learn to trust your gut?    In this episode, I'm joined by entrepreneur, leader and coach, Diana Wilson. She shares lessons from her own career journey, what it was like taking Deckers (Ugg) public and what every entrepreneur should be doing to succeed.   Guest Bio   Diana Wilson is a self-described industry agnostic, in addition to her most recent roles as CEO, Diana has held a variety of C-suite positions across a wide range of industries—from footwear to music—in roles covering all points along the strategic, financial and operational spectrum. Early career highlights include the high-intensity thrill of taking Deckers (Ugg, Hoka) public in 1993, spearheading a number of successful M & A transactions. Most recently she has completed a passion project of writing a fictional novel and launching a Substack Newsletter, Wit & Wisdom where she writes about everything from business and creativity—to health & wellness—to living a purpose-filled life. Connect with Diana on LinkedIn and subscribe to her newsletter Wit and Wisdom.    Host Bio   Jayla Siciliano, Shark Tank Entrepreneur, Real Estate Investor, MBA and experienced investor/founder in markets from consumer products to short-term rentals. If you like Alex Hormozi, Tim Ferriss, Entrepreneurs on Fire with John Lee Dumas, or you follow sharks like Barbara Corcoran, Lori Greiner or Mark Cuban (who invested in my Shark Tank pitch) you'll love this show!

Twenty years after meeting as high school athletes, long time friends Stephen Pryor and Justin Knust are coaching in studio, online, and on the water, as the data-driven founders of Live2Row Studios. While hauling regatta trailers and drinking beers in bars, Stephen and Justin realized that the coaching and training system they'd been developing for youth rowers could be valuable for the larger rowing community. In 2015, they opened the doors to Live2Row Studios in Ocoee, FL, and pivoted during COVID to offer live on-line training. Today, their growing coaching staff uses ErgZone's powerful metrics to provide personalized benchmarks and they are devoted to making a difference for the rowing community. Yes, it's World Whisky Day on 20th May but this episode isn't completely whisk(e)y flavoured. We're sampling a new non-alc botanical spirit! A brand new gin! A fabulous new bar in Hackney! And a few more bits besides. We kick things off by mixing up a Black Manhattan. No, we hadn't heard of it either but now that we've tried the delicious rye and amaro based cocktail, we're definitely keeping it in our repertoire. It sets us up nicely for our two tastings – the first of which is Botivo, a bitter and herbaceous non-alcoholic aperitif, the second is Renais, a gin distilled in England but inspired by Burgundy. Our bar review sees us heading East to the recently opened, oh-so fabulous Equal Parts in Hackney and as for our library pick, well, that takes us to the US for 'Bourbon: The Story of Kentucky Whiskey' , Clay Risen's beautiful box set. Then it's time to talk whisky without the 'e', with our very spacial guest, Colin Dunn, Whisky Ambassador at Diageo. Listen in for some fun facts, down-to-earth tips and the most engaging anecdotes from one of our favourite self-confessed whisky geeks of all time. What we're mixing:Black Manhattan50ml rye whiskey25ml amaro1 dash Angostura aromatic biiters1 dash orange bittersMaraschino cherry to garnishMethod:Stir all ingredients over ice and strain into a chilled Coupe glass. Kim and Alex detail how being able to hold both love and anger creates balance. Following up since the trial they detailed in the 3 parts series, "It Was Never About Queerness: Abuse", they share how life has been, what is happening and where things are going now navigating these systems in place that were put in place to protect only a certain type of person who has certain access to resources and holds a certain amount of privilege. We titled that series, "It was never about queerness" because though this is a podcast about being queer in a heteronormative world, we wanted to bring the focus back the heart of this story: a little girl whose life as a transgender child, obtaining access to health care and being provided with the option to medically transition was constantly being threatened, doubted, gate-keeped and ignored by her own abusive father while he cloaked his actions and behavior in "safety" and "care" calling out the legal system that makes domestic abuse recovery and safety only accessible for victims with money who can pay to fight and who have the privilege of knowing how to navigate the broken system a Colorado court system that allows a known domestic abuser be appointed as the Child Family Investigator. Dr Mark Kilmer, the "expert", a CFI/PRE/Psychologist whose grandiosity and arrogance is on full display places vulnerable children back into the care of abusive caretakers. And who when questioned, responds with complete disregard to the nuances of being a victim of domestic abuse therefore siding with the abuser How deeply archaic our system is that dismisses queerness and cannot keep up with real life time, staying ignorant to the signs of more covert types of abuse, forcing victims and abusers to co-parent "in the best interest of the children" The infuriating reality that everyone involved in the system, designed to "protect"was not actually equipped to call out the abuse happening and acknowledge that LGBTQ+ people and children whose identities are being targeted Dr. Mark Kilmer: the CFI that was appointed to our case... That doesn't happen anymore (the wandering). And this situation in which I found myself recently had me pondering why. What was I doing that was so effective? How was I managing the situation so that I could back on track; back to my productive ways? I still didn't feel great, but I didn't feel like I was pushing. Forcing. This week's episode features Equal Parts Brewing. They are located in Houston's 2nd ward, east of downtown. We were so excited to chat with Matt Peterson (Owner, CEO, Janitor, etc.) and Josh Samples (Sales Manager Extraordinaire). We started off by talking about what we were drinking: Entropic, on draft at The Cove on Hamblen. A delicious, tropical, balanced IPA. We learned that they went through 5 - 6 experimental batches until they got it just right. Next, we talked about the name change they went through, from Sigma to Equal Parts Brewing. They also have some unique names for their beers, and we delved into a few of those. The Big Lebowski is a big influence. Then, we discussed their Exotic Series. These are Tiki-inspired sour beers that are available in the taproom only. They mimic the taste of cocktails. Two of them are Pain Killer and Navy Grog. Equal Parts just opened their new, beautiful taproom. It is open every day. You can also find their beers at H-E-B and other stores around Houston. And on August 12th, they will be in San Antonio at Elephant Cellar for their Brewer's Dinner. Thank you for sharing your time and expertise with us, Matt and Josh. Thank you, also, to Daniel and the amazing staff at The Cove on Hamblen, for always making us feel welcome and for $4 drafts on Tuesday! You can pick up dinner at The Cove as well, a delicious home cooked meal from Cathy's Kitchen. Pick up is Monday through Friday. I had the Mississippi Pot Roast with Buttermilk Mashed Potatoes. It is one of our defining features in the animal kingdom and it is the thing that enables us to live and work together in groups, from families to communities to companies to nations. Storytelling is indeed an art, but an art with a structure. This structure has been passed down through the ages and can be found throughout the world in various cultures, which means it can be taught and learned. IntroductionNetworking has picked up a bad rap over the years, but what exactly is networking, how is your network different from your social circle, and how do you go about building a strong network full of great people and amazing opportunities? What to Listen ForWhat is the difference between your social circle and your network, and how can the misunderstanding of the difference lead to a loss of opportunities, both personally and professionally? What are the biggest myths surrounding networking? What is social capital and why is your familiarity with it crucial to your ability to network effectively? Why do many of us view networking as transactional, and why is that mindset detrimental to building a strong network? How important is your first impression when building a network versus building a social circle? What is the easiest area to focus on if you want to strengthen your network, and why can ignoring it have detrimental effects? Why are your casual acquaintances more likely to lead to job offers than your close friends? Is it more important to surround yourself with people just starting out, at your level, or further along than you, and why? What common viewpoint can stunt the growth of your network and lead to your network being full of toxic relationships?A strong network can lead to a healthier personal and professional life for one primary reason: a variety of backgrounds. Your network is different from your social circle (though they can overlap) because the individuals in your social circle are people you spend the most time with, and so they tend to share a similar background as you, which means they are likely to share the same perspectives and values you do. People in your network, however, likely come from a variety of backgrounds and are likely then to have different perspectives, values, and career choices. This variety helps keep you open to new ideas and perspectives but also drastically expands the number of connections you have because of the sheer number of people that those in your network have access to.A Word From Our SponsorsShare your vulnerabilities, victories, and questions in our 17,000-member private Facebook group at theartofcharm.com/challenge.
