Nearly 6,000 instances of book banning have been recorded since 2021, and the book censorship movement is growing, accelerated by new laws in some states. PEN America has joined Penguin Random House, authors, and students in a lawsuit against Escambia County school district, challenging unlawful censorship. PEN America program director, Kasey Meehan, joins us to talk about the numbers, what is being banned, who is driving the movement, and what actions, both legal and grassroots, are underway to push back against this fundamental challenge to freedom of expression and our democracy. Kasey explains in layman's terms what topics are being censored, how book ban lists are copied from state to state, and how state laws are creating a chilling effect on teachers and librarians who err on the side of "caution," by removing books or not buying them. We discuss the principles behind freedom of expression and open discourse, as well as specifics of the book ban movement, such as Moms for Liberty and their website, booklooks.org, which provides "slick sheets," excerpts used to support book bans. The Trump slide into fascism has brought with it some dangerous new trends like the banning of books, whitewashing history and a massive backsliding of personal rights like abortion and bodily autonomy. One of the most heinous attacks has been on the rights of people to live their own authentic lives. I've been hyper-focused on what's going on in Florida as I lived there for much of my life. The current governor is the worst in the country when it comes to pushing his own perverted sense of morals on the rest of the nation from his sickening directives like the "Don't Say Gay" bill, prohibitions on African American studies AP high school courses and 6-week abortion ban for a start. Now, as the legislative session began this week, we learn of new legislation that would outlaw transgender adults. Really. I'm not overstating that. I learned of this latest outrage last week though an article at Alternet written by one of today's guests. Erin Reed [http://twitter.com/ErinInTheMorn], aka Erin in the Morning [http://www.erininthemorning.com/], whose substack of the same name reports on trans and queer news and legislation so that we're all aware of what is going on. Erin and I will be joined by our old friend 'Boca' Britany Somers, host of The Brit Somers Show [http://britsomers.substack.com/], a trans woman trying to live her life in Floriduh. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/nicolesandler/message

The Washington Roundtable: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's requests for more aid from the United States got a frosty reception from many Republicans on the Hill this week. It's the most recent expression of the American far right's affinity for Vladimir Putin's project in Russia, and, more recently, for Viktor Orbán's consolidation of power in Hungary. The New Yorker staff writer Andrew Marantz joins the Washington Roundtable to discuss his reporting on CPAC Hungary, where far-right political figures gathered in Budapest last year, and on why American conservatives are gravitating toward figures like Putin and Orbán. “You don't have to be a red-string-on-a-corkboard conspiracy theorist to see the connections,” Marantz says. “In Florida, for example, Ron DeSantis's administration has admitted when they wrote the ‘Don't Say Gay' bill, they were modelling it on a previous Hungarian law, which was itself modelled on a previous Russian law. So, no one's really entirely hiding the ball here.” Marantz joins the staff writers Susan B. Glasser, Jane Mayer, and Evan Osnos on this week's episode.

Governor Ron DeSantis has faced growing backlash and economic boycotts in response to controversial policies in Florida, including the "Don't Say Gay" bill that restricts classroom lessons on sexual orientation and gender identity. Major corporations like Disney have condemned these laws, pausing film productions and operations in the state. Advocacy groups have called for tourism boycotts, with estimates of potential losses up to $7 billion. Entertainment figures and artists have canceled Florida shows and events. Companies like Citigroup are halting relocations to the state. The collective economic pressure aims to protest DeSantis' measures seen as discriminatory against LGBTQ individuals and harmful to Florida's business interests. Legal challenges argue the policies are unconstitutional. The NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) has issued statements criticizing Florida's "Don't Say Gay" bill and other policies under Governor Ron DeSantis. Here are some key points the NAACP has made: The NAACP President Derrick Johnson condemned the bill, saying it "follows a dangerous and divisive campaign led by Governor DeSantis attacking Black History Month, critical race theory, and now the fundamental human rights of the LGBTQ+ community." They argue the bill perpetuates dangerous discrimination against LGBTQ youth in Florida schools. The NAACP sees these policies as part of a broader agenda to stoke racial divisions and erase marginalized groups from schools. They contend DeSantis is spreading a dangerous political narrative. They have called for corporations, lawmakers and civil rights defenders to take direct action against policies like the "Don't Say Gay" bill that they believe harm young people. The NAACP pledged to advocate for the dignity, wellbeing and protection of all students in Florida, especially those within the LGBTQ community. They urged parents, educators, corporations and lawmakers to listen to marginalized youth and oppose legislation that denies human rights. Overall, the NAACP maintains that bills targeting protected classes like LGBTQ youth promote intolerance and run contrary to the goal of providing students with a high quality public education. They see a direct link between these measures and the broader struggle for civil rights. The Wednesday KITM can't come soon enough today. Coast to Coast, people are demanding to know, “Who is Tom Emmer?” and “Does Tom have what it takes to pull this nation out of...” Wait… Wait. The KITM control room is contacting me to say… David Waldman and Greg Dworkin will now address the turmoil that Democrats have caused through their insensitive attitudes for their brother's and sister's plight... For now, the Republican House Speaker nominee will be held by a generic MAGA placeholder who they will refer to as “Mike Johnson”. The “Mike Johnson” that the Gop hopes to drag across the finish line is actually based on a real-life pro-insurrection, anti-democratic, White Christian nationalist jerk. Johnson was part of the legal muscle fighting the separation of church and state. Republicans don't want to hear about that, they don't want to hear about anything at the moment… Anyhow... Congratulations! Meanwhile, everyone around TFFG is flipping while the flipping's good. Michael Cohen was a little late but is now making up for lost time. Jenna Ellis and Mark Meadows would be wise to flip now, but only time will tell if they are that wise. We say so long to the author of the first “Don't Say Gay” law, Joe Harding. There will be a lot Harding shouldn't say where he's going.

In the midst of the playoffs there's no Mets news, so Grace pivots to general baseball coverage and talks about the playoffs to this point. Two LCS's with stories on the road to them, and how the teams stack up. Grace also has a (somewhat) shameful admission about the 2023 Phillies, so try not to get too worked up about it. Then, Grace looks at some big stories from the week. Alyssa Nakken became the first woman considered for a managerial position in MLB! Of course there's sexist backlash but who cares? Kim Ng resigned, and good for her for knowing her worth. Then, Grace discusses the NHL ban on Pride Tape and how stupid the NHL is to create a backlash that was wholly unnecessary. But homophobia isn't based in logic, is it? Final, a third act all about Grace's movie minute, which starts as a celebration of a film and then turns to a slight dissection of late-00s media culture and the depiction of women therein, a celebration fo three women who deserve their flowers, and Grace listing every movie she's ever seen (just about). Billy hates the Braves with a passion, but that didn't stop him and Stugotz from talking about one of the best endings to a baseball game they've ever seen. And after Tony impresses us with his watch knowledge, Mike and Greg criticize Shedeur Sanders for taunting the Arizona State student section. Then, Hockey is back, but it returns with a huge stain on the league as the NHL has created what is essentially their own version of a Don't Say Gay policy. Is the NHL against equality? Today we just go back to March of this year…. As you may have heard me mention, I'm moving out of Florida- in large part to the fascist ways of the governor and his authoritarian rule over the state. One of his most heinous actions is his treatment of and lack of regard for the LGBTQ community. His vendetta against drag shows would be really funny if it weren't so mean, discriminatory and harmful to people just trying to live their own lives….So today, we'll enjoy the awesomeness of The Kinsey Six, an acapella drag group who'll show why desantis and his ilk are so scared of them…But on this day, March `13 of this year, 2023, we once again watched the government bail out billionaires (while us poor schmucks wallow in poverty…) as banks in Silicon Valley started failing… Mu old friend Dave Johnson lived there at the time and joined me at the top of the show to attempt to explain what's happening there…
In this week's LGBTQ headlines: • The Hungarian edition of ELLE Magazine features two gay dads on the cover celebrating rainbow families in an increasingly anti-LGBTQ country • A Florida county has banned a children's book about a "hugging lion" as part of the state's Don't Say Gay law • The latest from out recording artist Milahroy "Sounds On The Stereo" • And my review of the new coming-of-age film “Aristotle and Dante Discover The Secrets Of The Universe” All that and more in this episode of The Randy Report

3 - Rich kicks off yet another exciting live show from the Grand Hotel of Cape May with jokes about who's getting indicted (hint: it's not Jimmy Hoffa). Are wind turbines along the coast going to cause national security issues? If it does, the Democrats simply do not care. It's all about the greenbacks. 330 - Scott Coffina is our first guest off the board today as he joins us to discuss the Hunter Biden plea agreement falling apart. Scott explains how the judge saw the writing on the wall with the immunity tucked into Hunter's gun charge and decided to let Congress continue to investigate his case. 350 - Putting a bow on the Hunter Biden situation and Rich gives his astute prediction on what's to come for the Bidens. 4 - Victoria Coates joins us once again and debuts her new title! How are we feeling about the Phillies after their big series win over the Orioles? Why did top scientists in the US downplay the lab leak theory? They then move to discuss the UFO hearings and the compromised state of the Biden's coinciding to create a national security issue. Is Son of Sam a bigger whack job than Hannibal Lecter? What about the Bidens or the Clintons? Same difference. Heritage hosted a screening of Sound of Freedom, but has Dr. Coates seen Oppenheimer? How does nuclear weapon capabilities affect US foreign policy? Victoria details how Iran may join the nuclear states and that just may be the tip of the iceberg. 420 - Let's see the mullet! How is Matt DeSanctitratorous doing in Italy? 430 - What would be a good job for Hunter now that a judge has ordered him to get a job? Gen-Z women are now using make-up to make themselves unapproachable to men, but is it really working? 440 - Today, young women came out during a Congressional hearing to detest trans women competing in women's sports, as well as detransitioners speaking out against the medical community and their gender-affirming care. Her message before the committee is profound and very powerful. 4:55 - The Matt DeSantis Oppenheimer Watch Party Kit is here with all his issues watching the blockbuster. At least I feel a sense of control. 5 - Drive @ 5 - Representative Greg Casar is a hero for going an almost 9 hour thirst strike, nobody's ever gone that long without food or water. 510 - Dr. Wilfred Reilly joins us for his weekly segment. We start off with the continued bashing of Greg Casar for his lame dramatic gesture, and he ties it into how other mundane stories are overblown with the same logic like Don't Say Gay. The demand for racism in America far exceeds the supply. There is mass hysteria over racial tensions that are simply just fabricated to drum up a voting base. Nobody is trying to ban book titles, they are trying to keep explicitly sexual content out of school libraries. Why is there debate around the way slavery is taught, even though Florida and AP teach the same exact verbiage? Barbie or Oppenheimer? Why do we build heroes up just to tear them down at earliest convenience? 530 - Jimmy Failla is here, girlfriend! Why are those White House dogs biting people? Jimmy and Rich know the reason why and want to write the movie script. Jimmy breaks down what has transpired on the Bidens and how it'll affect the presidential race next year. Jimmy thinks Hunter's job should be something in front of the camera, and his father cured cancer! He goes in on Hunter and his idiocy and unwillingness to embrace the bad boy role. 550 - Rich is making his first public appearance since he had his surgery so he goes into detail about his state. He also fights his neighbor's landscapers. 6 - The fourth and final hour. Censorship is a very big deal and Facebook suppressing COVID information at the request of the Biden White House. Does The White House have a sense of humor? Opposing studies from researchers in other countries were suppressed at the drop of a hat for the Big Guy. 630 - John Yoo, Emanuel S. Heller Professor of Law, joins our program yet again to bring his brilliant insight on the Hunter Biden legal situation. John sounds the alarm on this case as it too many weird occurrences have taken place thus far. John also discusses how Trump will be indicted for January 6th. BREAKING: Trump charged with more indictments over the classified documents case. 650 - Summer Breeze makes me feel fine. We finish where we start with the wind turbine issue here at the Jersey Shore. Rich teaches a history lesson.

It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! She talks to Bradford Vivian, Professor of Communication Arts and Sciences at Penn State University, to discuss his recent book Campus Misinformation: The Real Threat to Free Speech in American Higher Education. Then, she is joined by Marco Fonseca, instructor in Latin American and International Studies at the York University Glendon campus, to developments surrounding Guatemala's elections. First, Emma runs through updates on Biden's visit to Ukraine, a potential return to the ERA, labor action with SAG, the EPA, and Ray Epps' lawsuit against Fox News (and how it might have played into Tucker's departure). Bradford Vivian then joins as he parses through the evolution of conservative attacks on higher education over the last few decades, with entire organizations, like TPUSA and YAF, and individuals, like Brett Weinstein and Barry Weiss, who have built up an entire industry of reactionaries who go to colleges to talk about how they can't say anything at colleges. Professor Vivian parses through this blueprint as, largely, a pretext for state-control of higher education, and a way to undermine social justice movements, and the communities that form around and within academia. Stepping back, Bradford walks Emma through some parallels between this era of anti-intellectual attacks, and the similar conservative battle we saw in the mid-20th century, particularly in how it can serve to undermine social justice movements, before parsing through how the recent attacks have pervaded through all levels of education, K-12, as we see with attacks on CRT and the Don't Say Gay bill. Marco Fonseca tackles the most recent round of Guatemalan elections and the surprise success of the Semilla party, a left, anti-corruption party that won enough to advance to a runoff, before stepping back to discuss the roots of the “Seed” party in the Guatemalan spring, with son of first President Arévalo helping to found the party. After walking through the CIA-backed Coup that violently halted the Guatemalan spring, and the decades of growing corruption that followed, Fonseca dives into the recent backlash to said corruption and parses through why the Elite interference in the 2023 election seemingly ignored the threat of Semilla, before they wrap up the show by assessing the future of Guatemalan election integrity as a Semilla ban becomes more and more likely. Long before Governor Ron DeSantis declared a new war on wokeness, Florida lawmakers in the 1950s and 60s tried going after the NAACP, suspected communists and gay people in Florida schools and universities. The lawmakers upended life for countless numbers of their fellow Floridians before being upended themselves by their own zeal for the cause. Now that DeSantis is bringing this playbook to a presidential campaign, Rachel Maddow and Isaac-Davy Aronson ask what we can learn from the last time Florida went down this path. Featuring guests:Stacy Braukman, author of Communists and Perverts Under the Palms: The Johns Committee in Florida, 1956-1965Shevrin Jones, Florida State SenatorRobert Buccellatto, historian and co-host of the Florida History Podcast

Ron DeSantis, the governor of the US State of Florida has now declared his republican nomination for the 2024 Presidential Election. He's the latest in a line of republican contenders keen to take on President Joe Biden for the White House. Since his appointment as Florida's governor in 2018, Ron DeSantis has been busy stamping his own brand of cultural conservatism on the ‘Sunshine State', including limits on abortions and restricting sex and gender identity education in schools. The latter, known officially as the Parental Rights In Education Act', denounced by critics as ‘Don't Say Gay', has led to an ongoing legal battle with Disney over their criticism of the Act. Ron DeSantis claims that his ‘Florida Blueprint' can act as a guide for Federal Policies. But before that, he's got an uphill battle to unseat his former political mentor Donald Trump. The former President is currently leading the Republican field in the polls and he's not wasted any time in attacking Ron DeSantis on a number of fronts, from insults and nicknames, to criticising some of his policies. This week on the Inquiry we're asking ‘Can Ron DeSantis win the White House?' Contributors: Aubrey Jewett, Professor of Political Science at the University of Central Florida, Orlando. Matt Terrill, Public Affairs, Firehouse Strategies, former Chief of Staff to the Marco Rubio for President Campaign. Ron Christie, Former Special Assistant to President George W. Bush and North American Political Analyst for the BBC. Dr. Julie Norman, Co-Director of the Centre on US Politics at University College London. Today's Headlines: Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed four bills into law that restrict LGBTQ rights. The bills include expanding the Don't Say Gay law, banning transition-related care for minors, prohibiting trans people from using public facilities aligned with their gender identities, and restricting "adult" performances in front of minors. However, Democrats are calling for an investigation into DeSantis's use of Florida's law enforcement agency. In North Carolina, the state legislature overrode Governor Roy Cooper's veto of a 12-week abortion ban. Donald Trump claimed responsibility for "killing Roe v. Wade." The resolution to expel George Santos from Congress was referred to the House Ethics Committee. In the mayoral race of Jacksonville, Florida, Donna Deegan became the first woman to hold the position, despite DeSantis endorsing her opponent. It's Top Hat Time! This week in the news... Biden gets a quesadilla and a churro to celebrate Cinco De Mayo, we praise Colorado for giving farmers their "Right To Repair", McDonald's in Kentucky will let your 10 year old work for free, Neo-Nazis target an event in Ohio, expansion on Don't Say Gay in Florida while DeSantis makes further moves to take Disney's powers, and even more Supreme Court justices spouse's and family receiving payments from rightwing activist have been discovered.
Montana Republicans voted to censure Democratic Rep. Zooey Zephyr, the first openly transgender person to be elected to the state's legislature. The vote comes after Rep. Zephyr last week said supporters of a proposed ban on gender-affirming care for young people would have “blood on their hands.” And in Florida, Disney sued Governor Ron DeSantis for revoking the company's long-standing control over its Disney World Resort. The suit claims DeSantis engaged in "a targeted campaign of government retaliation" after Disney publicly denounced Florida's so-called “Don't Say Gay” bill last year. And in headlines: House Republicans narrowly passed a bill to raise the debt ceiling and cut government spending, Sudanese civilians are scrambling to escape the ongoing violence in that country, and hundreds of Freddie Mercury's personal items are going up for auction this summer.Show Notes:Montana Human Rights Network: Donate – https://tinyurl.com/bdf22fskTransVisible Montana – https://transvisiblemontana.wordpress.com/Montana Federation of Public Employees: Our MFPE Family Stands With Rep. Even though Covid-19, Monkeypox and HIV/AIDS are three very different kinds of viral infections, they all impact some people more than others. When fighting a pandemic, we like to think that we are all in this together, but the folks who face racism, homophobia/transphobia, poverty and homelessness are more at risk than anyone else.Today professor Dr. Steven Thrasher joins us to look at why it's critical to address systemic inequality, racism and bigotry when fighting off any pandemic. In his new book “The Viral Underclass: The Human Toll When Inequality and Disease Collide,” Dr. Steven examines why certain populations are more at risk from viruses like HIV, Monkeypox and COVID-19.Plus--➤ How do we talk about marginalized people and disease without stigmatizing folks?➤ How the Don't Say Gay laws are killing us all. ➤ Counteracting the cynical viewpoint that both political parties are the same when trying to bring about change.FEATURED BOOK: Dr. Steven W. We are joined for the full hour by geopolitical financial expert and financial historian, Nomi Prins, to discuss her new book, “Permanent Distortion: How Financial Markets Abandoned the Real Economy Forever,” which highlights the huge gap between the high-flying stock market, versus back down here on earth, where average people struggle to make ends meet.Nomi Prins is an economist, author, geopolitical financial expert and financial historian. She is the author of several books, including Collusion: How Central Bankers Rigged the World, All the Presidents' Bankers, Other People's Money: The Corporate Mugging of America, and It Takes a Pillage: Behind the Bonuses, Bailouts, and Backroom Deals from Washington to Wall Street. Her latest book is Permanent Distortion: How Financial Markets Abandoned the Real Economy Forever. The idea of “Permanent Distortion” is that when the financial system needs it, it gets the money. And lot of it. And in an uncapped way. And in an unregulated way. And in a non-transparent way. When the real economy needs it, it's years of debate.Nomi PrinsThere's no such thing as, “This bailout didn't cost taxpayers money.” Because…money that goes into the banking system does not go into the real economy. Which means there is a shortfall in the real economy. Which means that money cannot be reallocated into the real economy. Whether that is to build bridges, or hospitals, or to enhance our education system, or help workers. Because it's going somewhere else.Nomi PrinsThere are people that will say, “Well, SVB (the failure of Silicon Valley Bank) has nothing to do with Glass-Steagall,” and that's just simply wrong. Any over-leverage in the banking system that can take down the rest of the banking system— or that can create that sort of lack of confidence, instability, creation of money to save it that doesn't go into the real economy— is a part of that problem.Nomi PrinsThere's a huge propaganda machine. And it's interesting that the destabilization of the real economy comes so frequently from the speculation of the paper economy.Ralph NaderIn Case You Haven't Heard1. In Israel, the planned judicial reform law has sparked nothing less than a popular uprising, with Haaretz reporting that as many as half a million protesters have taken to the streets. Prime Minister Netanyahu is wheeling and dealing like mad to cling to power. Barak Ravid reports that Netanyahu sacked the Minister of Defense after he called for suspending the judicial reform push. Itamar Ben-Gvir, leader of perhaps the most extreme party in the right-wing coalition government, has threatened to quit the coalition if the judicial overhaul is delayed – but may have been appeased by a promise from Netanyahu to make the National Guard answerable directly to Ben-Gvir, per the Jerusalem Post. Axios reports that Jewish Democrats in Congress met with the Israeli Ambassador and warned him that if the bill is pushed through, it will be harder for them “to talk about Israel the same way they used to.”2. A new paper published in the Harvard Environmental Law Review – by David Arkush of Public Citizen and Donald Braman of the George Washington University Law School – posits whether fossil fuel companies should be charged with homicide. The authors argue these corporations “have not simply been lying to the public, they have been killing members of the public at an accelerating rate, and prosecutors should bring that crime to the public's attention.”3. In the wake of the Silicon Valley Bank collapse, Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee Chairman Bernie Sanders has introduced legislation that would bar big bank executives from serving on Federal Reserve Boards. Chairman Sanders said “The Fed has got to become a more democratic institution that is responsive to the needs of working people and the middle class.”4. The Huffington Post reports that Rep. Ilhan Omar has introduced a bill to “Condemn Anti-Muslim Hate.” The bill was crafted to honor the 51 Muslims killed in Christchurch, New Zealand in 2019, and it was introduced on the first day of Ramadan. Omar is quoted saying “We...know that this increase in hate is not isolated to only Muslims. Church bombings, synagogue attacks, and racial hate crimes are also on the rise. In order to confront the evils of religious bigotry and hatred, we must come to understand that all our destinies are linked.”5. An investigation by Morgan Baskin of DCist found that “local developers are buying rent-controlled apartments, clearing out existing tenants, and marketing to housing choice voucher holders” because the DC Housing Authority engages in routine over-payments. In so doing, these developers are “eroding affordable housing.”6. In Brazil, Democracy Now! reports that the Lula government has successfully removed “almost all illegal gold mining operations…from Yanomami Indigenous territory.” Lula campaigned on the promise to remove these mining operations, which have “displaced people, devastated the land and food resources, and contaminated rivers with mercury.”7. Ever have a hard time canceling a subscription or recurring fee online? In a video by More Perfect Union, FTC Chair Lina Khan explained how the agency is taking aim at a pervasive corporate manipulation tactic nicknamed “click to subscribe, call to cancel” in which companies make it easy to sign up for a service, but make it very difficult to cancel it. The new rule – called “click to cancel” – would mandate that (1) it must be as easy to cancel a service as it is to sign up for it and (2) consumers must be able to cancel using the same method they used to sign up.8. From PBS: In Florida, Governor DeSantis is expanding the “Don't Say Gay” censorship law to high-schools. Supporters of this bill had previously insisted that it was only intended to curtail discussions of sensitive topics for young children. This expansion clearly undermines that argument.9. In Chicago, the International Committee of the Democratic Socialists of America hosted Cuban Ambassador Lianys Torres Rivera at the 35th Ward - 8th District Office for a meeting with local elected officials and faith leaders. They discussed the harmful U.S. embargo and strengthening goodwill between the people of Cuba and the United States. This meeting was attended by Cook County Commissioner Anthony J. Quezada and Aldermen Carlos Ramirez-Rosa, Byron Sigcho Lopez, and Rossana Rodriguez.10. From the New York Times: At a chocolate factory in Reading, Pennsylvania, a massive explosion has left at least seven dead and more missing. Activists are calling for a thorough and swift investigation into the factory's owners, the R.M. Palmer Company. Get full access to Ralph Nader Radio Hour at www.ralphnaderradiohour.com/subscribe
