Michael Soto is a transgender man who grew up a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Mesa, Arizona. He credits his family and the Church for setting an example of being a man of value, character, integrity, and being a leader in a challenging world. Michael grew up in the 1980s and 90s and at that time he and his family did not even know transgender people existed, nor that gender affirmative medical care and support were an option. From his earliest ages, Michael knew he was a boy. After years of struggle, learning, and prayer, Michael received personal and overwhelming revelation from God that his life has purpose, that there is much work for him to do, that he is a child of God no matter his sexual orientation or gender identity, and that this is a part of his purpose. He believes his queer transgender identity is one of life's greatest blessings and he is dedicated to loving and supporting his fellow human beings along their journey toward authentic and purposeful lives. Today, Michael is a leader in the U.S. LGBTQ+ rights movement and for the past 25 years he has committed his life to this work. Recently, he has worked closely with leaders of the Church in Arizona and Salt Lake City on anti-discrimination legislation, where he has built long-lasting relationships of goodwill and trust. Michael is Co-Founder of the Equality and Fairness Coalition and the Chief Advocacy Officer for One Community. He holds two degrees from Arizona State University—a B.A. in Women and Gender Studies and a M.S. in Justice Studies. He is currently a PhD student in Justice Studies. He is also a proud dog dad and caregiver for his mom—his living example of unconditional love. Today is Transgender Day of Remembrance and we talk to a member from the community on why this day is so important.
This is the continuation of last week's episode with Celia from LA to talk about their career and passion to educate, empower, and advocate for gender-expansive individuals in the community and corporate world. This is the last part of a three-part piece. Trigger Warning: This is just a reminder that this episode comes with a content warning. This is simple to empower you, our audience, with the knowledge you need to make healthy decisions about how and if you should consume this podcast content. Celia discusses a frightening incident where her life was in danger. As a transwoman, she felt scared of the potential violence, and mostly terrified of the powerlessness. As a vulnerable marginalized group, transgender people need to go the extra mile to find safety, both physically and psychologically. Tiffany also shares a disturbing episode from a man who expressed violent rage where she claims if she hadn't acted quickly could have been her last. Such stories are told to inspire even after terrifying episodes in one's life, you can find hope and strength. In 2017, Celia finally came out and her equity dropped in her career as people began to doubt her ability as a woman. She began to face heavy discrimination in various ways as she transitioned. However, this motivated her to create her organization to educate and support the transgender community. And when it comes to activism fatigue, she prays, spends time in nature, watches comedy, and finds a therapist to overcome this. She also mentioned the importance of managing one's micro-aggressions from past traumas. Celia leaves us a message that you are never worthless no matter what tragedies you face, and to reach out for support. You are not alone as there is always someone out there who will lend you a hand. ~~~Celia Sandhya Daniels is an entrepreneur, motivational speaker, D&I champion, blogger, composer, musician, photographer, hiker, and filmmaker. She is an Asian Indian who identifies as gender non-binary, trans fem. Celia is a management consultant with over 20+ years of success in media, health care, and life science engagements for over 100 companies. You've probably heard of Ts Madison through her iconic videos on social media, her TV show The TS Madison Experience, or even through her latest feature on Cozy, a track off the new Beyonce album. But before she became known for her content and out-of-this-world confidence as a trans woman, she was a sex worker that was battling stigmas within the same community that was meant to protect her. In this episode, listen as Maddie shares her struggles in becoming unapologetically herself. Because although she's always been very sure of who she is and what she stands for, it was the outside world - filled with transphobia and homophobia – that always made her feel like was inadequately representing womanhood and the trans community. Find out how Maddie overcame these comparisons and societal pressures to make herself happy - becoming the truest version of herself through radical self-love. Transgender Day of Remembrance on Nov. 20 honors the memory of those killed in acts of anti-transgender violence worldwide. That violence is an increasing problem in the U.S., where 57 transgender people died by homicide in 2021, a record. Many were women of color. “This is a hard week for many trans folks because that violence brings an increased visibility. They are often very afraid for young people, and that fear is not unfounded,” Alex Iantaffi, a Minneapolis family therapist who works with transgender people, told MPR News host Cathy Wurzer Thursday. “It is a tender conversation about holding space and support for people to process the impact of systemic violence, as well as to be reminded that as a community, we also have beauty, resiliency and mutual support.” Related reporting Listen Allina Health addresses breast health gap for transgender patients March On Transgender Day of Visibility, White House announces moves to expand trans rights 2018 'You cannot erase us out of existence': Transgender Minnesotans rally in Twin Cities According to the LGBTQ advocacy group GLAAD, the day of remembrance began in 1999 as a vigil to honor the memory of Rita Hester, a transgender woman who was killed in Boston in 1998. Transgender Day of Remembrance is held on November 20th each year to honor the lives we lost to anti-transgender violence and discrimination. The first TDOR was observed in 1999 when a group of transgender people gathered to highlight the need for awareness around anti-transgender violence after the murder of Rita Hester, a 34-year-old African American transgender woman who was murdered in her home in 1998. Since then, many have come together on this day to say the names and remember the lives of those who have died in the past year. The annual observance is a time to reflect on lives we lost to violence because of their sexual identity. The day hopes to raise visibility for our LGBTQ+ community and address the issues we may face. The journey of acceptance in our community is constantly evolving. This year, trans-inclusion is finally on the rise. However, while some change has been made, around the globe we have seen an increase of violence against our community. According to the Human Rights Campaign, 2020 was the deadliest year for the trans community and it keeps on rising. Year 2021, a staggering 375 transgender and gender-nonconforming people were murdered worldwide. Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) is an annual observance on November 20 that honors the memory of the transgender people whose lives were lost in acts of anti-transgender violence. What is Transgender Day of Remembrance? Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) was started in 1999 by transgender advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith as a vigil to honor the memory of Rita Hester, a transgender woman who was killed in 1998. The vigil commemorated all the transgender people lost to violence since Rita Hester's death, and began an important tradition that has become the annual Transgender Day of Remembrance. "Transgender Day of Remembrance seeks to highlight the losses we face due to anti-transgender bigotry and violence. I am no stranger to the need to fight for our rights, and the right to simply exist is first and foremost. With so many seeking to erase transgender people -- sometimes in the most brutal ways possible -- it is vitally important that those we lose are remembered, and that we continue to fight for justice." - Transgender Day of Remembrance founder Gwendolyn Ann Smith TDOR is a memorial. November 20 is the annual Transgender Day of Remembrance, a time to remember and honour the lives of trans and gender-diverse people murdered due to hate, prejudice, and discrimination. It was first held in 1999 to honour the memory of Rita Hester, whose 1998 murder in Boston, Massachusetts remains unsolved. In Canada, violence against diverse Two Spirit, trans, non-binary, and gender non-conforming people is high and their experiences of gender-based violence is unique. But when we talk about gender-based violence, we rarely focus on their unique experiences, nor have we historically centred their solutions and ideas for change.
