In this episode we continue our consideration of what Bill Massey in our first episode this season called "the battle of the statistics" between monopoly and competition advocates. We talk with Michael Giberson, an economist and senior fellow for energy with the R Street Institute, who notes the importance of taking statistics into proper context when attempting to contrast between monopoly utility regulation and competitive markets – particularly the need to account for the impact of inflation when looking at changes in electricity prices over time.Support the show

However, she is married with children and realizes that in order to live her authentic self, she needs to come clean to her husband and kids. On this episode of ITBR, Melissa battles the preconceived notion that she was “born this way” by speaking of a fluidity that enables us to come out “in our own way at our own time”. Melissa warns us that we ought to be aware of those who are threatening the queer community and says we should “live our truest lives but also be aware of the world that we do live in." Finally, Andrew and Melissa share their thoughts on having patience with closeted people and agree that “it's not on us to force someone to come out" but it's important to be a safe space for them. Melissa Giberson is a native New Yorker who identifies as a late bloomer, a highly sensitive introvert, and proud mama bear to two children. An occupational therapist and writer, she has published articles in Kveller, Dorothy Parker's Ashes, and Highly Sensitive Refuge. She received an Honorable Mention in the Memoirs/Personal Essays category of the 91st Annual Writer's Digest Writing Competition and her essay, “Art is the Antidote,” appears in the anthology, Art in The Time of Unbearable Crisis (June, 2022). Melissa's debut book, Late Bloomer: Finding My Authentic Self at Midlife (She Writes Press) came out August, 2023, and has received much advance praise. It was named one of LQBTQ-Read's top books for Jewish American Heritage Month. Melissa is living her authentic life with her partner and their two cats. Together, they split their time between New Jersey and Provincetown, Massachusetts. According to Melissa: "My motivation for writing Late Bloomer was born of the many times someone told me that my story was helpful to them. Early in my journey, women who were on the other side of their own journey showed up to help me and I want to do that for others as well. Writing a book enables me to reach more people. I hope readers come away from reading my book with the knowledge that they're not alone – whether they're just starting their journey or on the other side and hearing a story that resonates and validates their experience. I want people to know that there is an 'other' side." Sometimes it takes a while to find out who we truly are, particularly if we didn't give ourselves the time to explore life prior to settling down and starting a family. Those of us who did that young may find that, after our kids have grown, we really don't know who we are. Today's guest, Melissa Giberson, discusses her experiences coming out as a lesbian well into her 40s after being married and raising her children. I found myself captivated and moved by her story, especially how she describes her ex husband's reaction to her big news. But that is her story to share. Meet Melissa Giberson Melissa is an author and occupational therapist. As a storyteller, she captures moments by taking pictures and writing. Her essays have appeared online and in print in numerous publications, and she received an Honorable Mention in the Memoirs/Personal Essays category of the 91st Annual Writer's Digest Writing Competition. Her journey serves as an inspiration for listeners who may be facing similar challenges. 3. The healing power of storytelling: Through her writing, Melissa found solace and healing during difficult times. Listeners will learn how storytelling can be a therapeutic outlet for complex emotions and a means of connecting with others. 4. Kim and Alex have the pleasure of speaking with Melissa Giberson, author of Late Bloomer: Finding My Authentic Self at Midlife (Releasing on August 8, available for pre-order through Amazon!) ORDER NOW!!!! Melissa Giberson is a middle-aged suburban wife and mother of two kids, solidly planted in the life she's always wanted. Yet she longs for something more—something she can't quite put her finger on until, one day at the Y, she finds herself mesmerized by the sight of a naked woman and asks herself for the first time: Am I gay? This revelation sends Melissa on a head-spinning journey of self-discovery, one that challenges everything she thinks she knows about herself, forces her to decide exactly how much she's willing to risk for authenticity, and shakes the foundations of the family she's fiercely determined to shield from the kinds of wounds she sustained during her own childhood. Torn between her desire to be true to herself and her desire to protect her children, she is consumed by fear and conflicting emotions—and when her husband unexpectedly serves her divorce papers, her confusion only deepens. Adrift in uncharted waters, Melissa finds fragments of understanding and peace in unexpected places—in a conference room in Israel, a small fishing village in Cape Cod, and at a yoga retreat center—that help her deconstruct her preconceptions about faith and identity and begin to construct a new framework for her life. Over the course of her ten-year journey, she finds hope, love, and more courage than she ever knew she was capable of, and she gradually assembles the puzzle that is her—the real her. Riding Shotgun With Charlie #098  Dan Grdovic President, CNJFO    Like many people in the 2A community, Dan Grdovic and I were “Facebook friends” before we met in person. We finally met face to face at Coalition of New Jersey Firearm Owners’ (CNJFO) fundraising event called “Hunting Pheasants With Charlie” at Giberson’s Farm and Wildlife Preserve in Pemberton, NJ I’ve never hunted with dogs and it was an amazing experiment watching them work the field.. One of the hunters was a young man out with his father for the first time. And yes, the son bagged a few birds!   We had a wonderful hunt that morning. There was another hunt that afternoon after lunch, raffles, and a few speeches. The money that was raised helps CNJFO fight their main mission to end “justifiable need” for carry permits in New Jersey. New Jersey has unbelievably ridiculous gun laws. They way CNJFO does this is with a solid foundation of education, activism, safety, and awareness.   Dan went shooting with a cousin and really enjoyed it. But after getting an application, he put  it away. And getting another application and putting it away a second time. Like many people, Dan thought about what the government and town police would think if he applied for a firearm license. Finally enough was enough, and he filled out the application and went through the required paperwork.    After doing some shooting, Dan tried his hand at hunting and really got into it. What he didn’t enjoy all the restrictions on law abiding, background check passing citizens in New Jersey.    CNJFO has only been around about 6 years. We need all types of people and their varying strengths in the firearm community, author & activists, instructors, and wordsmiths. There’s what Dan was able to help out being a self described ‘grammar nazi’. After a couple years on the board, Dan stepped up to take the role as an intern president.    Being from Massachusetts, I really feel a kindred spirit with the folks from New Jersey. Dan and I spent a lot of time commiserating about the gun law similarities between our states. MA has had a 10 round magazine capacity since 1994 and permanently since 1998. NJ has had a magazine restriction since 2019. In both states, we have closet gun owners  who don’t come out and admit they own firearms. And of course, no matter all the gun control laws we have, criminals disregard them anyway.    Dan is a really great guy and it was a pleasure to get to know him. It’s wonderful to know that someone like him is fighting for our Rights in “occupied territory”.    Just for the record, we both bagged some birds that day.     Favorite quotes: “They call them schemes, that’s exactly what they are. It discourages people from applying and getting their license.” “The reason I put them in the drawer is because I was concerned about “what would the government think, right? What would the police think? What would the town think? Is this going to put me on someone’s radar?” “The issue with any more  gun control, for that matter the gun control we already have, is that none of this, not one stitch of it, stops crime.” “At some point, you don’t care what they think of you anymore. You just want your Rights.” Coalition of New Jersey Firearm Owners https://www.cnjfo.com/   CNJFO Facebook page  https://www.facebook.com/cnjfo   Giberson’s Farm & Wildlife Preserve  https://www.facebook.com/Giberson-Farms-Wildlife-Preserve-181668498531649/ Address: 101 S Pemberton Rd, Pemberton, NJ 08068Phone: (609) 726-0600   RSWC Hunting Pheasants Hat Cam Video https://youtu.be/koRLuJkMOZ4 Please support the Riding Shotgun With Charlie sponsors and supporters.    Leadslingers Whiskey https://leadslingerswhiskey.com/ info@leadslingerswhiskey.com   Keyhole Holsters  Veteran Owned, American Made http://www.keyholeholsters.com/   Dennis McCurdy Author, Speaker, Firewalker http://www.find-away.com/   Or listen on:iTunes/Apple podcasts https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/riding-shotgun-with-charlie/id1275691565   Spotify https://open.spotify.com/show/4EEPud0XzYz4wo0MYmA9uB   iHeartRadio https://www.iheart.com/podcast/269-riding-shotgun-with-charli-30654270/   Self Defense Radio Network http://sdrn.us/   OpsLens App on iPhone & iPad https://apps.apple.com/us/app/opslens-network/id1498033459

Sun is in Cancer and Moon is Capricorn, Full moon early this Thursday morning, June 28.  And so we talk about this Full Moon in Capricorn Energy, and in addition we explore the polar energy of Cancer-Capricorn. How Cancer allowing themselves to leave their shell for the qualities of Capricorn brings this crab from a hard shell to a beautiful cherished pearl.   Then, we explore the incredible legend, feminist, humanitarian, and singer songwriter Cyndi Lauper’s birth chart. Cyndi is serving us all kinds of cancer feels with four planets in this emotionally crabby, yet nurturing sign. So we look at her birth chart, honor her life, and talk about her triple tier Cancer Sun-Scorpio Moon- and Aquarius Rising, and how that has manifested through her life and work.   And then, to round this deep-felt, but also fierce episode off, we have the opportunity to sit down with Tess Giberson, City Witch, a nonbinary anarchist tarot slinging witch from Canada serving us some double Cancer, sun and moon, Aries Rising high vibes.   So it’s a packed out episode as always, SUCH an honor to be here.

I had the honor of connecting with Tess both as fellow readers on IG, but also because they are one of my Tarot students! They bring such profound wisdom, clarity, grace and power to this interview — I am so excited for everyone to be nourished by it! In this conversation, Tess and I dive into: • How Tess found Tarot on their path + how Caliban and the Witch, a book written by Sylvia Federici, has deeply impacted their journey as a Witch and Tarot reader (8:00) • How important it has been to break out of the paradigm that you have to study for 20 years to begin to read for people (not true!) (11:52) • Understanding and connecting to the Tarot as a tool through mental health struggle (15:42) • Boundaries, consent, folk wisdom, showing up for readings in contraction, and how important it is not to attach to whether the client “liked” the reading or not (so important!) (31:53) • The challenges of transiting through The Empress and reframing them outside the gender binary (43:48) • Tarot as a revolutionary tool (52:21) • The challenges with The Sun in the Tarot (1:05:08) • Transiting through the Queen of Wands Reversed (1:10:04) Find full show notes for this episode: https://wildsoulpodcast.com/blog/tarot-folk-practice-tessa-giberson-city-witch Follow Tessa at: https://thecitywitch.ca/ and on Instagram at @cityxwitch ABOUT THE PODCAST Hosted by intuitive tarot reader, holistic counselor and teacher, Lindsay Mack, Tarot for the Wild Soul is a weaving of deep conversations with folks who use Tarot in their lives, channeled energetic offerings, intuitive readings on the months ahead, and mini Tarot lessons. THIS WEEK - Happy Darwin Day! Evo and SI open this week's podcast with birthday greetings for Charles Darwin. The herd celebrates this event with a discussion of "Seeing and Believing," Jerry Coyne's review of books by Kenneth Miller and Karl Giberson. The question that Coyne and the herd address is whether science and religion are compatible. Evo thinks the answer to this question may differ for scientists and non-scientists, and Chappy thinks that science should be considered as a method of inquiry, or a way of thinking and learning, rather than a body of knowledge about particular phenomena. SI opens this segment by noting another anniversary that occurred recently, then leads the herd in a discussion of Giberson's "argument from convenience" (many thanks to Jerry Coyne for coining that term) for retaining religious beliefs. After chewing on this idea for awhile, the herd discusses Michael Brooks' proposition that people are born with a predisposition to believe in the supernatural. Evo offers some good reasons for agreeing with the proposition, but OG, ever the skeptic, wants more evidence before she'll accept it. After OG reveals the latest poll results, the herd discusses the Freedom from Religion Foundation's latest billboard campaign. Are the billboards part of an atheist meme? SI wraps up the evening with an interesting observation about President Barack Obama's second swearing-in ceremony.
