Leah and Deveter are back for season 3 of Let's Chat! What better way to get the conversation started than with a discussion on Stress and Anxiety!According to American Psychological Association -There's a fine line between stress and anxiety. Both are emotional responses, but stress is typically caused by an external trigger. The trigger can be short-term, such as a work deadline or a fight with a loved one or long-term, such as being unable to work, discrimination, or chronic illness. People under stress experience mental and physical symptoms, such as irritability, anger, fatigue, muscle pain, digestive troubles, and difficulty sleeping.Anxiety, on the other hand, is defined by persistent, excessive worries that don't go away even in the absence of a stressor. Anxiety leads to a nearly identical set of symptoms as stress: insomnia, difficulty concentrating, fatigue, muscle tension, and irritability. Take a listen to see how they handle both.

Leah introduced her mom to The Harlem Hellfighters! Take a listen you may learn something too!Leah's book suggestion for this week is Blended by Sharon M. DraperBy Nick Garbervia the msn.com news web site HARLEM, NY — The Harlem Hellfighters, a majority-Black World War I regiment whose soldiers won plaudits for their bravery, have come a step closer to getting long-delayed recognition from the federal government. The U.S. Senate on Monday passed the Harlem Hellfighters Congressional Gold Medal Act, a bill introduced by New York lawmakers that would award the medal to the Hellfighters. Having already passed the House in June, it now only needs President Joe Biden's signature to become official.Descendants of the soldiers had gathered this spring at Harlems 369th Regiment Armory — constructed in the Hellfighters' honor — as U.S. Rep. Tom Suozzi announced he was introducing a bill to honor the group."It is never too late to do the right thing," said Suozzi, a Long Island congressman who became interested in the Hellfighters after he was approached by neighbors whose ancestor, Sgt. Leander Willett, had been injured in France while serving with the regiment. The Hellfighters, a segregated regiment composed mostly of Black and Puerto Rican troops, were deployed to France in 1917. They earned their nickname from their German foes, who were impressed by their enemies' bravery on the battlefield. In 1918, the Hellfighters were assigned to serve with the French Army, rather than with their white countrymen who refused to serve with Black soldiers — a "decades-old injustice" that the Gold Medal would help correct, Suozzi said in April.

Over the next couple of episodes, we are going to talk about identity and diversity. Don't forget to check out our episode on Black Representation in Media. Leah and I have very detailed conversations about image, specifically our hair. Leah shared a poem with me a couple of weeks ago and I want her to share it here. I hate my hair. I wish I had honey-colored coils that shake and bounce. Instead, I have thick, dark, stand out kinks that can not be contained. I never understood why my hair had to be this way. My hair breaks combs instead of gliding through them. My hair escapes the hair ties and rubber-bands that try to keep it captive. My hair needs multiple expensive gels to slick it down instead of just one. The hair that sits on top of my head is supposed to feel like a gold, jeweled crown but right now, it feels like a crown made of thorns just trying to pinch and pierce my scalp. I hate my THICK, DARK, STAND OUT KINKS that make me different. Will I ever be able to fit in?I HATE my hair. After she read this to me I was crushed! Am I a bad example of a black woman? What haven't I done to encourage my daughter to love the beautiful hair that grows out of her scalp? I totally understood how she was feeling. I understand hair issues. I understand how it feels not looking like others. After I delt with my issues I asked her to flip the narrative and write about the positives of her beautiful thick hair. This is what she wroteI Love My Hair -Leah Brown   I love my hair. I have thick, dark, stand out kinks that are wild and free. My hair my favorite thing about me. My hair is too powerful to fit the mold. My hair sets trends instead of following them. My hair bounces with me when I jump up and down. My hair is expensive and deserves the best products around.  My hair can be braided, twisted, and locked. On top of my head is a golden crown that makes me feel special. I love my thick, dark, standout kinks that make me different. I'm glad I don't fit in.

Even prior to the pandemic I was watching at minimum 10-15 series and forget about movies on Netflix, add Disney+, Apple TV, Hulu, and regular cable on demand I'm sure I watch more content than anybody in our house! Most of the shows I personally watch include a strong black lead however there are some that don't have any multicultural representation. According to researchTwo in three Black Americans don't feel they see their stories represented on-screen, according to a new study from the National Research Group (NRG).The study, entitled “#RepresentationMatters,” also found that 67% of Americans across political ideologies and ethnicities feel there is a greater need for on-screen representation of all of the following: mixed-race individuals, Black men, Black women, Black children, Black teenagers, Black gay men, Black gay women, Black transgender men, Black transgender women, Black non-binary or genderqueer, Black men with disabilities and Black women with disabilities.
