In der Reihe rororo-Entdeckungen erscheinen Bücher bereits vergessener internationaler Autorinnen au dem 20. Jahrhundert. In "Eine Tochter Harlems" von Louise Meriwether erzählt die 12-jährige Francie von ihrer Welt in Harlem der 1930er Jahren. Ihr Vater ist ein sogenannter “Number runner” - jemand, der bei illegalen Lotterien die Wetteinsätze einsammelt. Somit hält sich die Familie finanziell über Wasser. Die Situation ist allerdings nicht leicht. Dem Vater droht Verhaftung, wenn er dabei erwischt wird. Auch auf den Straßen herrscht viel Gewalt und Kriminalität. Francie geht zur Schule, trifft sich mit Freundinnen und muss sich allen möglichen Herausforderungen stellen. Magda Birkmann hat sich im Studium mit Sprachwissenschaft auseinandergesetzt, hat dann über ein Volontariat bei Suhrkamp in die Bücherbranche gefunden. Seit 2018 ist sie Buchhändlerin in der Buchhandlung Ocelot in Berlin und arbeitet als Literaturvermittlerin, unter anderem auf Social Media. In ihrem Newsletter „Magda liest“ empfiehlt sie Bücher und bringt aktuell mit der Autorin und Bloggerin Nicole Seifert die Reihe rororo-Entdeckungen heraus.

I dag er Jan i det bitre hjørnet, til Einars store fornøyelse. Jan har fortsatt treningsnekt etter operasjonen og nå begynner han å gå på veggene. Han har også latt seg påvirke av en lokalsak i media og Harlems avskjed i Skal vi danse. Today I spoke with the Resilient Ballerina, Jazz Bynum. Jazz is a company corps artist at Ballet West. She began training at the age of 5 with Hudson Repertory Dance Theatres' after-school program. She continued her training at Maryland Youth Ballet and Dance Theatre of Harlems' Residency Program at the Kennedy Center. Jazz has also received her B.F.A in Contemporary Performance with an emphasis in ballet from The Boston Conservatory. Her goals as a ballet dancer are to become a principal dancer, be a part of the change to normalize black faces in ballet companies, dismantle microaggressions in our workspace, and be an example for young brown and black ballerinas that they do belong. In addition to becoming a principal ballerina, Jazz wants to publish a few books and open her own Wedding and Event Planning business. Jazz lives to always spread love and positivity. In our interview, we talk about Jazz's experience with Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, injury recovery, and her own personal toolbox of mental health resources that keep her resilient. Her story is really inspiring and a great listen for any dancer going through injury recovery. DraperBy Nick Garbervia the msn.com news web site HARLEM, NY — The Harlem Hellfighters, a majority-Black World War I regiment whose soldiers won plaudits for their bravery, have come a step closer to getting long-delayed recognition from the federal government.The U.S. Senate on Monday passed the Harlem Hellfighters Congressional Gold Medal Act, a bill introduced by New York lawmakers that would award the medal to the Hellfighters. Having already passed the House in June, it now only needs President Joe Biden's signature to become official.Descendants of the soldiers had gathered this spring at Harlems 369th Regiment Armory — constructed in the Hellfighters' honor — as U.S. Rep. Tom Suozzi announced he was introducing a bill to honor the group."It is never too late to do the right thing," said Suozzi, a Long Island congressman who became interested in the Hellfighters after he was approached by neighbors whose ancestor, Sgt. Leander Willett, had been injured in France while serving with the regiment.The Hellfighters, a segregated regiment composed mostly of Black and Puerto Rican troops, were deployed to France in 1917. They earned their nickname from their German foes, who were impressed by their enemies' bravery on the battlefield.In 1918, the Hellfighters were assigned to serve with the French Army, rather than with their white countrymen who refused to serve with Black soldiers — a "decades-old injustice" that the Gold Medal would help correct, Suozzi said in April. 

Dipset is Hip Hop royalty, it would be difficult to explain the story of hip hop along with the influence and impact it possesses without at least mentioning The Diplomats, Harlems very own. Comprised of its core group members Camron, Jim Jones, Juelz Santana, and Freaky Zeaky These guys have given us timeless and classic records as a group and each as a solo artist and are unique for so many reasons that we will talk about today. It's crazy how Dipset truly is peak nostalgia for any hip hop fan yet the diplomats are still touring today and giving us iconic moments. With being hip hop icons also comes the trials and tribulations of being at the top, from the inner turmoil within the group to arrests, charges and jail stints, the story of Dipset is a crazy one, I mean they really lived that rappers life, from Versuz to transcending hip hop fashion on more than one occasion to beef with 50 Cent and Jay Z, from getting kids to tuck their ears into their fitted and wear baggy valor sweatsuits, to Cam taking over the roc and showing yall how to get $2million out your deal. Dipset is the definition of iconic and still has a generation in a chokehold so I thought why not take a look at the recent history of Dipset on this brand new edition of Where Are They Now.

Berättelsen om livet på Harlems gator, stjärnglansen på modegalor och kvällen i Stockholm som gjorde rapparen till ämne för den politiska toppen. Inne på en snabbmatsrestaurang på Kungsgatan i Stockholm sitter folk och äter hamburgare och dricker milkshakes. Klockan är strax före tio en ljus och varm sommarkväll söndagen den 30 juni 2019. På gatan utanför står ett gäng på fem amerikaner klädda i streetwearkläder. Två unga killar i jeans och vita t-shirts kommer fram till gänget. De försöker prata, men verkar ha svårt att förstå varandra. Amerikanerna är tydligt irriterade och ber de unga killarna lämna dem ifred. Det är oklart exakt vad de vill. Men klart är att stämningen hårdnar. En av amerikanerna tar tag i den ena unga killen och lyfter bort honom. Han svarar med att bli irriterad och kastar sina hörlurar på amerikanen. Hörlurarna har gått sönder. Inifrån restaurangen ser det ut som vilket fyllebråk som helst. Men kanske har folk där inne redan fattat vem det är som är inblandad. För ute på gatan finns en av världens mest kända rappare. Det är A$AP Rocky. Om tre dagar ska han vara huvudakt på Smashfestivalen på Stadion i Stockholm.  Ute på gatan försöker A$AP Rocky skaka av sig killarna. Men den unga killen är upprörd över att hans hörlurar har gått sönder och fortsätter följa efter. Tillslut exploderar det för A$AP Rocky och några i gänget som misshandlar en av de unga killarna. När polisen kommer till platsen är den ena unga killen förvirrad och chockad. Han sätts i en ambulans med skärsår, skrapsår och blåmärken. Det som hände ikväll, på gatan i centrala Stockholm, kommer sätta A$AP Rocky på kartan och det svenska rättssystemet i världens blickfång.
